Soul Fish Cafe

Disappointing Experience I ordered to go from Soul Fish on Cooper and specifically asked for my meal to be dropped fresh. I was told it always is, but that clearly wasn’t the case. The whole catfish tasted old, and the peas and okra were not properly cooked or fresh. I spent $42 and still had to cook dinner for my family. See pictures. Would not recommend based on this experience.

Cute cafe about 3 miles from downtown Memphis, with indoor and outdoor seating. A lot of locals eat here. I ordered the catfish and shrimp platter, fried pickles, fried okra, blackened salmon, and coleslaw. Pros: Food was really good. Shrimp was very flavorful, nice coating. Okra good, blackened salmon, coleslaw and cornbread were my favorite. Cons: the dipping sauce didn’t quite measure up to some of the other restaurants in terms of flavor. They offer vegetable based sides but most were cooked in pork or turkey broth which isn’t accommodating if you are vegetarian. Other than that, this restaurant was a really good experience.

First time eating here. Friendly service, fair prices, good portions, and great taste. Definitely will make another stop here in the future.

I rarely eat fried fish anymore, but when I'm back in the hometown, this is one of the places I have to always visit. The service is always a reminder of the peaks of Southern Hospitality. The food comes at fresh and surprisingly fast. While also being expertly seasoned. And there's other options besides fried fish....even vegetarian options. But it's the regular catfish plate with a sweet tea/lemonade mix every time for me. Maybe I'll try something different next time.

Stopped by to grab a quick bite to eat before a volleyball tournament. Buffalo shrimp mild were really good! We should have ordered 2! Fried perfectly. Blackened chicken Caesar salad had some great flavor. They didn’t skimp on that seasoning for the chicken! Blackened mahi sandwich (daily special) great flavor just needed some kind of spicy remoulade sauce to tie it all together. Bun was not able to hold up to the juicy piece of fish. Maybe french bread toasted would be better suited. Shrimp po boy disappeared before I could get a bite! So assuming it was good! Sweet tea was amazing! One of the best I have had.

Visiting Memphis, I always stop here! Catfish filet entree cant go wrong. Plenty of side dish selections that are equally good. Service is spot on also.

The restaurant is somewhat spacious and brightly lit with outdoor lighting. The staff is very attentive and the food is very good. I'm used to getting much larger portions but this is my first time at a restaurant in this area, so I don't know how much is given by others. The price is very reasonable. My only issue is portion size. The Fish and Shrimp order was two small pieces of fish and six shrimp. Amariah was an excellent server. Also, I assumed it was AA owned, but it is not. I enjoyed the food.

Went in on a Sunday night for dinner. Was able to be seated quickly at a table. They are a bit small on the table size so when the food arrives it’s a little crammed with 4 people at one table. We ordered hush puppies and fried pickle chips to start. Hush puppies were a bit dry and the fried pickles were a bit soggy and the batter was a bit too light on. The soup of the day was gumbo and it was good. We ordered catfish tacos and then a catfish and shrimp plate. All were really great, e tortillas for the tacos a freshly cooked and soft. The fried okra was the best thing in the menu! For 4 people with sodas for drinks it was $105. Was worth it, I enjoyed the food and the service was excellent.

We ended up at Soul Fish Cafe the day before Thanksgiving after trying three other spots that couldn't seat us, and I'm so glad they were open! The hush puppies were a hit with the whole table, and the cornbread and sides were equally loved by everyone. I had the fish sandwich, which was huge, crispy, and delicious, paired with some fantastic fries. My stepfather-in-law ordered the catfish, which looked amazing, and my mother-in-law really enjoyed her blackened Caesar salad. Everything we tried was fresh and flavorful, though I've heard the fried pickles might not be their best offering. The service was friendly, and the relaxed atmosphere made for a great dining experience. I'd definitely recommend it, especially for their Southern staples!

This place is pretty darn good. And the food and service was fast! - Catfish: Good coating and clean tasting catfish. - Cajun cabbage: this dish was fantastic. A red wine vinegar, sausage and peppers...cooked down with the cabbage...darn good and wanted more. - White beans: not full flavored beans...but good and a nice side.

Found this place on our way from the airport and not disappointed. The host was not the most welcoming, but I think it's just her personality.lol once seated the server was very prompt and helpful. She gave us time, offered suggestions and patient. We had 2 entrees and an appetizer. The buffalo shrimp had just the right kick and kind of a lemon peppery taste. They were served with fries as well. We left a happy plate for sure. Both entrees were good catfish had a good taste and fried perfectly. The Po Boy didn't stand a chance either. Unfortunately, the sides weren't all that, but wasn't bad either. I added a little more seasoning to the Mac n cheese and the texture wasn't too fresh. Okra was decent as well. We'd definitely go back and try other menu items. Overall nice spot and great fell. They have an outside area too, what was a plus. Stop by if you're looking for a little seafood comfort.

This was my favorite meal in Memphis! I'm drooling just thinking about how tender and flavorful that blackened catfish was. Husband got the catfish po'boy and said it was excellent. His meal also came with some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had. Waitress was super nice and complimented my dress, which made my day haha.

I love this neighborhood and part of Memphis, the decor that lines the overhead walkways has so much charm. There's good parking available in the attached lot. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating, with high chairs and booster seats also readily available. Service is friendly and also readily available, love when everyone had a great attitude. The food sticks close to the southern comfort food genre, there's some tacos and salads on the menu that give some variety. Mostly fried and grilled fish and shrimp plates and sandwiches. My wife loved the French fries and thought the sweet potato fries with the cinnamon dusting were also yummy. I couldn't get enough of the blackened catfish, honestly some of the best seasoned and delicate catfish I've ever had. I would be back for those filets alone. Only complaint was that the hushpuppies came out quite oily and that the tartar sauce was a bit too mayo forward, I though is could use some more seasoning to wake it up a bit. Wishing as I'm writing this that I had saved some room for the Mississippi Mud Pie that looked amazing.

Always stop in when we visit the family in Memphis. Delicious fresh hot, home cooked tasting! I was so hungry I got into it before I remembered to snap a picture!

I always liked the food at Soul Fish but the portions have gotten much smaller and the price higher. I ordered a 2 piece catfish dinner. The two pieces wasn't as much as a whole catfish. It was more like two medium fillets and it certainly wasn't worth the price. You don't have to wait long for your order, and the servers and nice. It always looks clean. I may not return but I would still recommend it to others.

Came here with a coworker after reading reviews and it didn't disappoint. Very packed especially on a Monday but we were sat right away. Our waitress had a lot of tables but it took a while to get our drink orders in , she also didn't introduce herself so don't know her name . The food was pretty good . Cabbage could be cooked a bit longer for my taste. Mac and cheese and sweet potato were so good . Porkchops we're flavorful but would have been better with a gravy or sauce . Also the food wasn't piping hot as it should have been . My sides were luke warm at best .

Soul Fish Cafe is the standard that every other seafood restaurant is judged by. None of them have ever surpassed Soul Fish Cafe!

Ok the first time I ate here everything was nice well put together boom bam But this time is my last time whoever was cooking didn't know how to properly season anything the fish was over salted I will say this everything on my plate and my mother-in-law's plate was very salty even the deep fried pickles was so extremely salty why??????? Even the fries were bad and even worse we ordered a kids meal but the kid didn't even get a drink and the coleslaw they have no season and it tastes like nothing I think if you would have added salt to the the coleslaw probably would have been good but the slaw wasn't even good but the Mississippi mud dessert was off the chain a brownie with vanilla ice cream that was the best part of the meal right there so it wasn't all bad It's bad when the dessert or the salad was better than the main course that's bad

Food was good, the host wasn't t friendly but maybe she wasn't t having a good day. Our actual waitress was nice and friendly. The place was nice and clean as well. Fried okra was a little too hard, but everything else was good.

I was a Catfish Cabin girly! Iykyk! However, this place has been good the few times I have came. I love the sit in or take out options! This fish is fireeee! I'll be back

Went for dinner with family while in town seeing the sights. Great open space with lots of seating, great service, and somehow even greater food. We got an order of the hush puppies to share that were pretty good. Its sauce was alright, like a tartar, nothing too crazy. Ordered blackened catfish -- the seasoning and flavor was out of this world good, cornbread was pretty good, collard greens were perfect, everyone was really satisfied with what they ordered. My mother-in-law even had her can coozie she accidentally left on the table ran out to her by the waitress!

Soul Fish has Good customer service, food, and atmosphere. 10 out of 10 recommend I dine in and out with family and friends often

I had the blackened chicken Caesar salad. It was drenched in dressing. But overall the flavor was ok. My friend had the catfish plate.. she shared it with me sense I didn't like my food and it was good. Service was fine and I thought the pricing was reasonable. I would go back.

Theeeeeee best blackened catfish I've had in my life! Full dining room means great food and it was full, every table! Coming in from out of town our server shared the best dishes and was right about every one of them! Must go spot!!

I love love love Soul Fish. I usually get the shrimp and catfish with a couple of sides. All of their sides are excellent. Just pick one and you'll be happy. I usually get fries and slaw lately. Here I have tried their sweet potato fries and absolutely love those my favorite thing in the store, is the banana cake any other banana cake you'll ever try worth every penny would even pay double love the cake so moist and the icing is perfect. Definitely my monthly.

Shrimp, catfish, hush puppies, okra platter with my own cocktail sauce with Fireside ale to wash it all down while watching women play tennis with no sound to bother me !2nd flat tire on Salsa rear tire ! Luckily Roberto and tree crew help me with crescent's wrench and channel lock pliers for glass removal! Good Monday!

The red snapper was amazing and the customer service outstanding. I recommend this restaurant. Parking is on busy street but definitely a spot to try.

Good table service. The young lady was personable and friendly. I had the catfish which was a nice portion, seasoned well, fries were over done, the hush puppies tasty. I got a piece of chocolate cake and it didn't taste like chocolate at all. I would swear it was caramel cake! I hate caramel cake. The frosting was no color near chocolate. I told server I did not like it and she advised me to her manager and no offer to remove it from bill was made. It's still on my counter from several days ago.

Yes, the service is awesome and staff knock it off the roof. I especially love the grilled catfish along with the sweet potato fries.

Always great food and super service at Soul Fish. The hot from the fryer catfish is superior, as is the blackened. Try the pickled green tomatoes!

We were there a few days ago and the food was amazing,we had the catfish fillet's ,collards,slaw and etc.it was tasty,service was great except the waitress kept refilling my daughter glass with tea and I had tea and she never refilled mine not one time my granddaughter didn't get her water refills either,I will come back because otherwise I guess you would have to ask for a refill Lol

Have gone to Soul Fish many times in the past & always enjoyed it. Haven't been in awhile & we returned. It was as good as always. I had grilled catfish tacos which were great. Spouse had blackened catfish plate which was also very good. Our sides collared greens, pickled green tomatoes were excellent. Something on menu to please everybody. Even our tea was notably good. Our service was friendly & efficient. Place was clean.

Great entrees, decent sides, desserts not great. Service was wonderful, fast and friendly. I am not a huge catfish fan but thought I should go with that because it's the specialty here. So glad I did! Now I know that I like catfish, but ill only get it at Should Fish Cafe LOL. Catfish tacos and white beans was awesome. A friend with us loves catfish and was very impressed. The only negative was the desserts seemed prefab.

Soul Fish executes its concept nearly perfectly. It's basically a catfish house for the urban, the young, and the professional. Instead of being country and rustic, the restaurant features a lot of bright, shiny, hard, white modern surfaces to remind you that you're in a vibrant neighborhood in the city in the 21st century. Of course, it wouldn't work if the food wasn't solidly good, which it is. The wife and brother-in-law had fried catfish, to which both gave thumbs-up. (I tried a couple of bites and agree.) I had the blackened catfish, which was also very good, although that seasoning was laid on a bit thicker than Paul Prudhomme might have approved of. Soul Fish has a long roster of sides, including some I wasn't even familiar with. I got pickled green tomatoes, which provided a cool and tart contrast to spiciness of that blackened catfish. (There's also stuff like "Cajun cabbage," a cucumber salad, and black beans.) You get a decent corn muffin with your entree, too. Actually, the entire menu is lengthy: There are po-boys, salads, about a half dozen apps (fried pickles were pretty good), plenty of seafood besides catfish (trout, salmon, shrimp), plus a couple of meat entrees. Overall, we thought the prices were fair. There is also beer at reasonable prices. A Crosstown IPA was a notch better than the IPAs we'd had at the gleaming, monolithic Wiseacre location near downtown.

This place was great! It's in a little walkable shopping area & was a great find. I think it's a chain so there's a bunch of locations They have a tiny little parking lot so we parked on the street right out front. We tried the peacemaker po boy & catfish small plate and the peacemaker came with 1 side. They have a ton of choices but I got Cajun cabbage! Liked it, if you like pickled things or collard greens, the cabbage was kinda like collard greens Loved the Po boy! Very fresh tasting, crunchy outside, tender inside. Bread was delicious! They have a housemate remoulade and it was tasty... A little thinner than I'd prefer but good The catfish was awesome with the home cut fries & Cole slaw. If you're in the area, this is a great place to eat without the crowd of downtown They have a ton of desserts and I wish I could've tried them all but we had to get back on the road!

I was in memphis visiting family and was advised to come to this place for a good Sunday dinner. I simply was not disappointed. From the food, to the service, to the decor, etc. this place has IT!! What a great spot for memphis soul food.

Great option for southern seafood that also offers vegetable options. Able to get shrimp and fish grilled or blackened as well as the traditional fried version. Not greasy and always good option.

Tell me it's good without telling me it's GOODT! This is my second visit in a week! Yes I've always heard great things! Yes I live nearby one of the locations! Yes I loooooveeee fish! But have I slept on them, absolutely! And shame on me! I meeeeaaannnn SHAMETH ON MEEEEEEEEEEE'ETTHHHH DID I order the same thing each time, maybe! It was soooooo good!! The first time was an online order which was packaged very nicely and included a slice of strawberry cake! But today is dine in and the experience is still of great quality! I'm lunching with a friend and she's getting fried catfish, fries and Mac and I'm getting fish, shrimp and cabbage! Before I had fresh cut fries, coleslaw, and extra hush puppies!!! Allllll delicious eats!!! I'm skipping on dessert today as I've done nothing to deserve it! Lol I must also say that the kitchen staff UNDERSTANDS the assignment of the African American BLACK urge to fry my ish CRISPY! Small tip: if ordering online, hush puppies are included with most entrees, however it doesn't show online! Don't be like me and have 442 pups to eat lol I kid I kid GO NOW! Ok! Bye!

So I've spent a couple of months in this area with family. We love walking down to Young Cooper and checking out all the yummy restaurants. I know the name of this place is selfish café, but once I had their wings... Let's just say I'm addicted. I am so addicted That on a road trip I started a week ago, I made my first stop in Memphis so I could get these damn wings!!! The service is great, it's a small place, so not that many tables. They have outside seating in a small beer and wine selection. They also have the best brewed tea in the area!!! But the wings are just perfectly prepared in my opinion and they are served on a bed of shoestring french fries. Normally not my fave but the extra sauce that dips below on them makes them to die for. I always partake in a piece of cake as well because it's so delicious too. No picture means I really don't have it right lol. Tell my calorie counter that!!!

Food was good. We had to ask who our waiter was as all 3 ladies, which apparently, included our waitress kept walking right by us and no one said a word. I was really close to walking out. Overall I guess I would go back. The food was good and the waitress was ultimately nice I guess she just didn't want our table.

I liked the service at the other location. I stopped here on my way back to NYC and I said let me try the food here. They were a bit slow with service and my food was cold. I requested corn bread and it wasn't on my order. The person serving us had daisy dukes on and her cheeks were out. I couldn't understand the dress code here. Everyone else was well dressed but this one girl and she wasn't professional. It was ok! The manager however was very attentive. He noticed everything.

Aside from the ridiculously chill atmosphere of the restaurant, everything was fantastic! The server was cool (not restaurant cool, but nice). Everything I and my family ordered was very delicious. Highly recommend, even if you have to take it to go and eat it in your car for heat.

Great food, great service, great ambiance. Came to Memphis and staying g at an Air BNB. What a great place for catfish, fried pickles, Mac and cheese and a po boy. Everyone happy with the meal.

I really liked the clean look of the restaurant and the setting of the location. A real neighborhood, old school feel but in a modern restaurant. The fish was excellent as were the hush puppies and macaroni and cheese. The cucumber salad definitely needed more pickling and spices and the slaw was very just cabbage with mayonnaise. Southerners are picky about these sorts of things to be fair. The service was pretty mediocre although the staff was friendly. I would still recommend it based on the food. The catfish was on point.

The service and food, even though they look pack they where able to keep track of customers order, and the food was worth eating for my point of view from the sandwich/ po-boy to the salmon and trout, it was great

It was ok. I had the catfish, shrimps, hush puppies, and fried okra. Everything was kind of one dimensional. A little too salty for my personal taste. Mississippi mud pie was good. Service was great, they're very welcoming and helpful.

Soul fish cafe is a must try if you are in the area. The food is amazing. I had the catfish plate and the filets were perfectly seasoned and had a nice crunch. The collard greens and fried okra were also amazing. Our server Mari was very hospitable and attentive. The place is super cute with lots of parking and a covered patio area.

The grilled salmon, spinach, red beans and rice are Sooooo delicious! I have it EVERY time. It's the only thing I choose because it never disappoints. The key lime pie is also delish! The vibe is laid back downtown with the best people watching window seating. A Good selection of drinks are also available. The service definitely aims to please!

What a nice, clean fish spot! While driving through this area of Memphis, were we a little disturbed at all the boarded up houses. We felt pretty uncomfortable driving around until we hit this spot. This place was an oasis. Not only did we enjoy the atmosphere, the food was great! The gumbo and catfish plate were excellent. The batter wasn't too thick and heavy like with some fish and chip places. The fried dill pickles were awesome as well. We were also very happy with the great, friendly service and especially the clean bathrooms! Side note, we parked on the street on the right side of the restaurant and got a parking ticket. We didn't notice any no parking signs, but given we were tourists in a rental car, we just paid the $21 ticket.

We had soul fish for take out, we ordered over the phone and picked up our food. We placed an order of the soul fish special (fried Catfish, fried crawfish, and fried shrimp), with hush puppies. We also got the catfish poboy with Mac and cheese. The soul fish special was good but the crawfish was on the salty side. The catfish poboy was really good, I needed just a bit more of the sauce that's on the sandwich to give it that "umph" but I was pleased with the meal. The portions were very filling as well! I liked the Mac and cheese as well. Would definitely order it again!

We didn't eat in, but we picked up beef ribs, beans, coleslaw and Mac n cheese with fried chicken. Everything was delicious, the texture was crunchy and crispy, not too salty. The beef ribs had an amazing Smokey flavor, and the bbq sauce was sweet but just right with balance. Definitely recommend, next time I want to eat in because the ambiance looks so cute inside!

Came in for a snack at their location that has all the beautifully placed silver-cast fish sculptures! Cool touch. Settled on the catfish dip that feels like a take on a smoked salmon dip or lobster dip. Surprisingly, very good! Will come back some time and actually try their food-food!

Many of the locals I spoke to recommended Soul Fish café, so I knew couldn't go wrong. For my first visit I had to try their signature dish, the catfish platter. Amazing catfish fried to golden perfection, with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies; a southern delicacy. I also tried their lemon pie and white chocolate cheesecake, great, a little too sweet for my taste though. I shall return!
