Soul Mama Music Venue | Restaurant

It's okay. Won't be going back again unless someone I'm desperate to see isn't playing anywhere else. It's just a very odd, chaotic place; one person manually checking names off a list for a sold out show despite us having a QR code for entry, everyone was there before the doors opened but the music started while people were still waiting to get to their seats, therefore blocking people's views as chairs were moved and seats were found in the dim lighting. Confusion as to how to order drinks; our server told us to turn the table lamp on to order, two separate people came by to turn it off, with one being a little curt when telling me to keep it off and simply walking off when I explained why it was on. Ordered shots at one point, didn't arrive, ordered two mains, didn't arrive. Didn't chase either because the couple next to us were disappointed in their food and how the time it took to arrive, plus I didn't feel like spending anymore money on drinks beyond the 6 bottles of Asahi we had. Really enjoyed Omar; second time we saw him in the year (with him persuading Eric Benét to come on stage for a bit). Was hoping to add an alternative to Boisdale into rotation which gets a lot of similar acts but isn't Black owned, and doesn't have YolanDa Brown (someone I've loved since stumbling across her at Canary Wharf's Jazz Festival over a decade ago) but I think I'm okay with travelling a little further for good music with food and drink that turns up. And to top it off, the owner (not YolanDa) politely asked the room to respect the performance and other attendees by not talking, only to stand at the booth and constantly talk and laugh with patrons throughout the performance. Could I have asked him to be considerate? Maybe. But would I? Absolutely not after the pass agg interaction I had with a member of staff over the lamp. Hopefully it'll get to a decent level of service that matches up to the quality of the venue and acts they can attract. Really wish I remember the name of our server; he was a delight (and wasn't at fault for either the lack of food nor shots as he didn't take the orders)...his name may have been Oz as that was on the receipt but I'm not too sure.

I should have written this review a long time ago! I visited this beautiful place a few weeks ago to celebrate my friend’s birthday, and it was amazing. The atmosphere was great, the music was fantastic, and the environment was very friendly. I especially want to thank two girls: Nicole and Tanielle. Nicole was incredibly kind when I arrived—I looked completely lost! She welcomed me with a huge smile and, even though she was busy, she handled my request brilliantly, always with a smile. And the AMAZING Tanielle—hope I’m spelling her name correctly—ohhh! Such a lovely, sweet, and approachable young lady! She dealt with a very confused “bunch of flowers” (us!) and managed to sort everything out, ALWAYS with a smile. Very professional! Thank you so much—you were amazing! Highly recommended.

Great Soul when it comes to Music; lacking soul when it comes to food and service. We entered the venue and were greeted by a lovely lady who welcomed us and arranged for our seating at the dining table. Note that the tables are either in two’s, or generally long tables where you can be sat with others depending on your group size. The music and artists are superb. The crowd is a very cool vibe and for this, I would return. Omar did a stellar job performing and in the crowd that night, there happened to be Eric Benet who got up and also sang which was awesome!! The food and food service…… hmmm. I had read the reviews about service staff being confused etc. Our group of 5 had a friend celebrating birthday. We ordered some food and drinks. One of the dishes arrived to one friend after 20 mins, the next dish arrived 10 mins later, even though the waiting staff weren’t sure if they were our meals. Drinks took 45 mins to arrive after us asking a number of times. The birthday friend was then presented with a chicken wings platter after 1 hour 10 mins and she never ordered that dish. In fact, she ordered something else and after 1 hour and 40 mins just asked for it to be cancelled. They kept bringing over meals to our table that didn’t belong to us. I did speak with one of the waiting staff who simply apologized and said the kitchen was overwhelmed. I think the process should be clearer for the staff waiting tables and kitchen staff. Seems to lack alignment. The cauliflower main dish was £22! Quite steep in terms of pricing versus what you get. We did pay a separate ticket price for the artist also. Value wasn’t there in terms of food. The bill then arrived incorrect, although the funniest part is the Service Charge statement: 12.5% service charge is added for parties of 1 or more. In other words, if you don’t attend, you don’t get changers. As I said, I would return for the artists.

Loved every dish we had, particularly the gumbo starter (shout out to the chef, Ben!) and would love to see the gumbo become a main in future. The cocktails were delicious and service was quick. Our waiter Anjan was really attentive and brilliant. I only gave Soul Mama 4* rather than 5* because we came for food and music but the act had cancelled as it was a quiet night, I wish we would’ve known in advance as we would’ve rescheduled.

I was really looking forward to my evening at Soul Mama, but unfortunately the food fell well below an acceptable standard. Our waiter, Anjan, was excellent — attentive, professional, and genuinely tried to salvage the experience. However, good service cannot compensate for poor food quality. We were informed that the Christmas rum cake was unavailable, despite it being advertised on the Christmas menu. This was particularly disappointing as this was my sister’s second visit, and on her previous visit a dessert was also unavailable, again blamed on supplier issues. This points to a recurring problem rather than a one-off. The wings were lukewarm, bland, and poorly executed. The main course — West African lamb cutlets — was served cold, as were the accompanying vegetables. Portion sizes were small, and one cutlet was largely fat, making it inedible. The Stevie & Luther Tribute Show with Nat Augustin was excellent and the highlight of the evening. However, even after the service charge and a cocktail were removed, we were still collectively out of pocket by £110, which felt unjustified given the experience. This is a real shame, as the music and front-of-house service were on point. However, the food quality and repeated menu availability issues require urgent attention if standards — and customer trust — are to be maintained.

We had a fantastic experience at Soul Mama today at the Rev Bazil Meade concert. We were served by a lovely waitress called Tasia. She was very courteous, efficient and had wonderful customer service skills and manners. I can recommend the rum bbq wings and salmon with rice n peas washed down with the Coconut Mama rum punch! Thank you Soul Mama and Tasia for a lovely Sunday afternoon experience.

We definitely had a ‘value for money & time’ night. The motown/soul singers started off the night before an African powerhouse group came on, who were the main act. It was an entertaining evening and the food was great. The venue location and its convenient station & parking needs to be added/clearer alongside the address so it’s easier to find & more people can enjoy the variety of events, performances and vibe that this fantastic place offers.
