Our big group of 9 came in right before closing time and it was a one man show for the staff on March 27, 2025. I can’t remember his name but he was so patient and kind to us from the beginning to end. We even asked him to take a photo with us. We loved everything we ordered and we didn’t have to wait too long for our food. A few things on the menu were not available such as fried oysters. Free street parking. Family owned business so stop by to support them whenever you come to the area or near by.

On Saturday, June 7, 2025, my sister and I decided to embark on a venture and try a new restaurant in the Central District area. We were in the mood for soul food and opted to try Soulful Dishes. There was zero parking, and we parked a few blocks away. Upon entry, the ambiance was cold & left much to be desired. Also, there was no greeting or welcome whatsoever. Matter of fact, no one was ever present at the service counter. We waited a long time before a guy came out, he was the only one there. He did not apologize for the wait, introduce himself, or even offer any dinner suggestions. He just stood there with a blank expression. There was no scent of food or any way to tell if anything was actually being cooked. I did hear the microwave beeping in the background after we ordered. We made our selections and sat down. I ordered fried catfish, Mac-n-Cheese, and the potato salad. My sister ordered the chicken tenders, Mac-n-Cheese, and the collard greens. I liked the potato salad. The Mac-n-Cheese was okay. The chicken tenders were okay. The collard greens were flavorful and tasty. My catfish however, was undercooked, and wet in the center. I was displeased and did not finish my meal. The portions were very small to be so costly as it was. As someone who is honest, direct and to the point, I told the guy that my food was not right and he just stood there with that glazed eyes/blank expression. It was not a great experience so I would not recommend Soulful Dishes. Worse, my stomach was very upset after eating there (my only meal of the day), and that lasted through the night. We will not be returning. This was our experience at Soulful Dishes. Bad choice.

I’m gonna say my first visit was a good visit. The food was tasty and the service was very good. I can appreciate the young man Christian and his chef for accommodating my requests, and I look forward to going back to try some more of their menu. Today I had the hot link burger, and the seafood platter plate-I chose the catfish and it comes with jumbo shrimp, I substituted my fries for collard greens and I would have had candied yams, but they were out so I tried the red beans and rice. Go check them out.

Google
This was recommended by several staff members from a local hospital where I was in town for consulting work. Not a lot to the atmosphere but Christian, the cook, server, and, cashier was very good at every level. He kindly mentioned what they were out of before I ordered and gave recommendations of what would be good with my choices. My food, Fried Catfish, Mac n Cheese and Collard greens. Everything was cooked to perfection and maintained its flavor as leftovers for the next day. I highly recommend Soulful Dishes as they do traditional soul food dishes very well and if Christian is cooking, serving and cashiering he will get you right!

Google
Best burger ever! Big juicy delicious patty, perfect cooked bacon, grilled onions, and perfect shoestring fries, not too crunchy, not too soft. Just another awesome dinner burger here. I've had the PO boys, the shrimp and many sides here before. Thinking of those sides make me hungry again.

Fiona Giselle

Google
The food here is a religious experience. Made with love and feels nourishing beyond words! Had the chicken tenders with potato salad & mac n cheese, and their burgers are made fresh and are also fabulous. Must be patient as home cooked food takes time, but is so worth the wait. Kind humans in front of house and behind the kitchen!

Google
I ordered a "Bull Dawg Burger" today and when I tell you it was huge and had great flavor. I ALWAYS enjoy my food here and have tried multiple meals. The catfish is great as well as the blackened salmon salad. I have never been disappointed. The artwork in the restaurant is also amazing.😊

Yelp
Food was good, I got the catfish and some sides. Everyone was friendly, just that there were not many people working at the time so it was slow to get. But it makes for a nice thing to take out. I took mine to the park and it was really enjoyable. When I am in Seattle next, I will probably come back again.

Yelp
I don't know what has happened to this in the last few years. The quality and taste has gone down drastically. I ordered a burger and it was extremely small compared to when I first ordered it years ago. The mac & cheese consistency has changed and is super creamy with random cheese chunks. Also, the seasoning has changed and the items just don't taste the same.

Yelp
Great amazing tasteful dishes! Come see for yourself! Friendly Staff! Very welcoming:)

Yelp
Small Quaint spot with limited inside seating. Street parking and orders take time from order to delivery. I would recommend calling order for takeout. There is foot traffic but only two works. The cook and the order taker. The order taker was kind and friendly and was great at letting guest know about the wait between ordering. We dined in the food was delivered to our table. Plates ordered seafood plate, pork chops plate, Salmon plate. Plates come either two sides of choice. One Seafood plate was fried cod and shrimp the other was blackened salmon with grilled shrimp. My shrimp was seasoned and flavorful. The Salmon was prepared perfectly. Sides choices collard greens, MacNCheese, and candied yams. The ladies had concern with the yams, but he remade them. I thought the send try was an improvement. However my ladies wasn't impressed period. Overall my husband loved his salmon plate I enjoyed my plate so we were satisfied. Great portions!

Yelp
Very seldom do I give a bad review BUT...I would not recommend eating here right now. The owner was so nice and he refunded all of our money. He was the only one there- no cook no cashier. He obviously needs some staff to help him out. For me on our visit, my family could not eat the food. The greens tasted like they were from a can. The yams were runny. The pork chop looked and smelled funny. The cornbread was dry. The food did not look appealing. But, the owner did refund our money and was very apologetic. I sincerely hope he gets it together. He seemed like a hard worker, running a restaurant solo. In a couple of months give this place a try. At some point he had really good reviews.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, was a last minute pick since where we actually went was closed. Arrived as soon as they opened and about 3-4 other folks came in behind us. Their phone was also jumping with takeout orders and I saw a few delivery drivers coming in too. Anywho! I ordered the catfish platter with two sides: candied yams & cabbage with onions. My friend ordered the oyster po'boy with fries and after about twenty mins we got our food. My friend really enjoyed the po'boy, it looked like it slapped but my catfish did not. Boy I've never been so disappointed, of the five pieces of fish, I ate two and the cabbage which was delicious! The fish was just bland, lacked seasoning so I ate what I could with ketchup & lemon. The yams looked candies but tasted like they just poured them out the can and on my plate, didn't taste a bit of sugar. The lady at the register was sweet, and took our orders no problem. I verified they had everything on the menu so I wouldn't be disappointed in my choice. Well that was a bust... The music was dope, a bit of an ol skool vibe and the art was nice. Relatively quiet restaurant. I was visiting Seattle so I can't say that I'd recommend it but probably won't go back. For reference, I am from Southeast Texas, right on the gulf so I know what I know. ‍

Yelp
I thought I was going to get the catfish or chicken, but I ended up splurging on the oxtail special came with two sides. I ended up getting greens and potato salad. I ate the oxtail for lunch with a little bit of rice I had leftover from another meal. The oxtail was fall off the bone tender and the a flavor bomb I had a hard tome not licking the bowl. I hadn't even heard about this place till today when a friend suggested going here since we were next door picking up bbq at The Barbecue Pit.My order of oxtail was $25 and came with two side I selected the greens and potato salad. The potato salad is packed with different veggies and is well seasoned. The greens are good I'm used to some with a little more kick, but still secent I wish I knew this oxtail would be on the menu all the time I'd definitely come back just for it. My friend got the catfish that came with fries. I'm not a catfish expert but one of the better I've had some places are dry from over frying. I gave may friend a piece of oxtail for a piece of the catfish. It was moist and flavorful the coating was nice and well seasoned.

Yelp
It's one of those days go home and call it a day but I didn't. My wife needed a ride to work ok let's go. I can get some bbq at one of the soul restaurants so I drive to simply soulful their closed on Monday, drive to the Fire Pit on Yessler they are gone all together. But on the corner is Soulful Dishes but I'm early half hour they open @ 12. 12 o'clock comes were told the cook is running late. We are offered entrees we didn't want and later told the is a no show.

Yelp
Okay I waited for my 2nd trip here to confirm just how good it is. Shrimp - ordered the fried shrimp and I can confirm without a doubt that it is the best fried shrimp I ever had. The shrimp are big, juicy, and most importantly crunch. I believe have a flour breading instead of a cornmeal batter. They are seasoned and the 6 count will be more than enough. Fries - OMG, if the owner sees this message please please please continue to serve the battered French fries. The first time I had the fries they were just basic and okay, but the second time they had the same breading as the shrimp. It was sooo delicious. Sides- This is why 1 star was deducted. I had the Mac n cheese, and potato salad. None of the sides are worth having again, with the exception of the battered fries. The Mac n cheese was runny, the potato salad tasted store bought.

Yelp
Whoa, maybe I was exceptionally hungry or in an exceptionally good mood but my poboy was outbid this world delicious. I'm beating myself up for not being hungry enough for seconds. In fact, counting down seconds until I can down another one. Seriously though, I really appreciate the service in front and back of house and will be returning ASAP.

Yelp
My food was dreadful!!!!! I ordered the Lemon Pepper Wings, Catfish, Mac & Cheese, & Chicken Tenders with Fries.. My Wings were undercooked, my Chicken Tenders were tasteless and the Mac & Cheese was sour, complete let down after waiting a hour for my food! $60 went straight to the trash this is my last time going to Soulful Dishes.

Yelp
Yabba Dabba Doo! We noticed this restaurant on the Seattle restaurant week list, so decided to order takeout on a Friday night. The orders were a bit backed up, took an hour or so for the food to get ready. But the wait was so worth it! We got the shrimp and grits, full of flavor with the shrimps and mushrooms dancing on a bed of grits. The catfish poboy can seriously be shared between 2 small people, with plenty of crinkle cut fries. The bread was also crunchy and fresh. I wish they marinated the catfish with some herbs, that would certainly have me coming back just for the catfish!

Mia A.

Yelp
rarely do I review places... this one deserves one. I would not recommend eating here food took forever and when delivered it was undercooked. pitty, Visiting Seattle for the first time.

Yelp
I'm always on edge about trying new restaurants due to restrictions we face because of chemicals and herbicides used in the US food and agriculture industries. I have report I was overjoyed that we had no reactions to the food. It is also very good. So good I made it back for seconds and will continue to go back. They also offer delivery and pickup Supporting local businesses within the community and helping keep the American dream alive !Sammy Burger Fried Fish

Yelp
Soulful Dishes was closed for about a month since Dec, 2021. But they recently reopened in Mid Jan. So I finally stopped in Jan 21st. This was the first time I've ordered there. I wanted to try the Shrimp Creole but it's no longer on the menu. So I decided to get the Dawg Burger well done with Mushroom, grilled onions, lettuce and tomato. You get to choose how you want it cooked. It was very good hand made thick burger. It came with plenty of Fries.

Yelp
I'm from the South so I have been looking for a good soul food spot in Seattle. This place does not disappoint. This is not your typical, bougie, wannabe soul food. This is the real deal. I've tried the catfish and the pork ribs. The catfish is battered, fried to crispy perfection, and served with fresh lemon and hot sauce. The pork ribs are cooked wet and were so tender they were falling off the bone. Make sure you grab enough napkins because you will definitely get sauce on your hands/face. Finally, you really can't beat the price for the amount of food you get. Huge portions! I will definitely order again!
google avatar

Aneesa O.

Yelp
Tried this place out the other day & MAAAAANNN. This review is mainly about the "seafood platter" plate. The catfish was DIVINEEE. It was the perfect seasoning and consistency with the batter where it felt coated but light and fluffy. The shrimps were huge and tasty! The collard greens are a 10/10 for me & those candied yams are no joke! The lemon pepper wings were fire, especially if you live for that lemon tang like I do. I was hoping that they were fried, so I was a bit disappointed but I threw them in the oven real quick to make them crispier and it was perfect! The grilled pork chop was pretty good.

Emily B.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is always delicious and the staff is very nice and helpful. Soulful dishes definitely has my continued business. I highly recommend the catfish and salmon plates and the red beans and rice but there's no wrong choice ;)
google avatar

Glaister W.

Yelp
The smothered Southern pork chops beautifully done two pork chops in a smooth creamy sauce peppers onions mushrooms with a rice and red beans The taste was fabulous we also had the Oxtails they tell me I'm still smiling Jamaican style . We also ordered some collard greens and creamy macaroni and cheese all the sides interesting none had any meat added that would take away the true taste vegetarian style
google avatar

Christopher A.

Yelp
Delicious food and I need to return back for round two! It takes a lot before I give a 5 star rating for a restaurant, but this place is up there
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Ordered the oxtail, red beans and collard greens - best I've ever had and I grew up in the south. Couldn't recommend this spot more

Roderick S.

Yelp
Man, I ordered chicken, wings and fries and I also ordered chicken strips and fries. Me and my wife got busy. It was like my Madea made this food. It was screaming. 2/24/24
google avatar

Yelp
I don't consider myself the biggest wing connoisseur, but these might be the best wings I've ever eaten. I came in with a buddy for a lunch meeting and ordered a six piece regular barbecue wings and MAN were they amazing! I strongly recommend coming here service was fast and nice and the food was really good and a great value.

S S.

Yelp
Our experience was wonderful. Chase and Christian really came through. The food, music, conversation (when they didn't have a customer) were all great and informative. We learned about the area and the local community. We were visiting Seattle and I'm so happy we found Soulful Dishes. Annnnd books!!!! I love books!!! We will definitely stop by again, if in Seattle.
google avatar

Erika C.

Yelp
Best catfish I've found in Seattle! I had Mac & cheese and collard greens for sides, good portion sizes and full of flavor!!! Staff was friendly and welcoming, so glad I found this place!
google avatar

Cherie K.

Yelp
Upon recommendation i gave this place a try.. Not disappointed. Crinkle fries. Yayy.. Bomb tasting grilled chicken sammy with all the fixins.. Not greasy just hot , fresh and delicious. Ate like a complete trash panda but worth it. Mr. Miller thank you for some awesome lunch. Will def be back

M J.

Yelp
Came in from out of town to visit this spot. Should have gone with my gut instinct. I am confused by any review higher than two stars. The macaroni was bland, the beans and rice were unseasoned, and the greens came from a can. Not sure what part of the soul was in this food. But this definitely did not hit the spot.
google avatar

Rica M.

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff. I came on two separate occasions and got the same service as the first time, Although their specials online are different from inside the store so you should ask about that. I would recommend if you are looking for something filling and worth your money.
google avatar

Eldridge M.

Yelp
Absolutely love our food from here. My wife and I were looking for delivery options and it Soulful dishes came up on our list. I was eager to try it because I wanted some soul food and being from the south, I am a bit picky. Well let me tell you I was NOT disappointed. The food reminded me of being back in my early childhood home in the south where I would roam the kitchens of my mom's house in Houston, TX or my grandma's house in Corpus Christie, TX and Jackson, Mississippi. I ordered the Big Fish Sandwich (catfish) and let me tell you, "Big" is the key word here. Large pieces of catfish, perfectly seasoned on a large bun was so filling. I definitely will order this bad boy again. I also had the Soulful Wings and these bad boys were perfectly fried. What I appreciate about these wings are that they were prepared they way my mom would cook them. Very fried and very seasoned. My wife also had a chicken sandwich that she loved and overall we loved our experience. Definitely on our list of "go-to" soul food places.
google avatar

Katy H.

Yelp
Best shrimp grits ever! Also the beans and rice had so much flavor. Big hits all around!

Cal T.

Yelp
They need TONY back or something... I spent 88 dollars on a plethora of dishes NONE OF WHICH lived up to expectations... I use to visit all the time 2020-2022... what I ordered in 2024... I wouldn't feed my dog or give to my worst enemy. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME MONEY OR ENERGY until you get confirmation they're back to the old ways!

Yelp
Ok, I was looking for some fried seafood and came across this place. I had read nice reviews, so had to see for myself. I ended up ordering the catfish plate with Mac n cheese and yams. As you can see in my picture, it doesn't look bad and it wasn't! I will say the Yams were disappointing; definitely didn't have the flavor I'm used to, but I talked to the cook and he explained why and I actually agreed to what he said. Beside the yams, the catfish and Mac N Cheese were ...they did swap my yams for Red Beans & Rice and they were good. Overall, a nice experience. Go check them out!!
google avatar

Yelp
I was really excited to try one of our local/family owned businesses because I try not to support mainstream/big corporations. However, I asked for a refund and did not pick up my order because I had noticed the chef not wearing gloves or a mask. The person taking orders stated that the state does not require chefs to wear masks and I believed her. She initially declined the refund and was upset and rude, but then suggested that I call grubHub for the refund. However, after leaving and getting a refund from grubHub- I noticed her statement was not true. I have uploaded a picture on the county's requirement. (During Covid in Flu/Cold season) I will definitely try to order again next time when food prep is prepared under better conditions.

Yelp
The food here was so delicious! The service was incredible. Everything was seasoned to perfection!! I had the salmon, lemon pepper wings, Mac and Cheese, candied yams and collard greens and I was screaming with delight. I would highly recommend it to everyone with a mouth!

Tyler W.

Yelp
Girl at the front counter is Amazing. Super nice and friendly. Good food but the owner is cheap as fuck!! Fucked off the whole vibe!! No sense of what good customer service is. I WILL NEVER COME BACK!!! BASED ON THE PRINCIPLE! The owner was so cheap. He threw a fit over 8 ounces of mac & cheese. He didn't even ask us if we wanted to pay for the bigger size then had the girl working the front counter, walk over to show us to show what a serving size was like we were children.... SMH we could of went to COMMUNION and had a better experience
google avatar

Deneen J.

Yelp
Hey Seattle, please go to Soulful Dishes for some of the best soul food. I had the collard greens, mac & cheese, chicken tenders and catfish...mind blown! I usually like some vinegar on my greens but it wasn't necessary, at all. They give a lot of food for the price. The mac & cheese is a perfect remedy for comfort food. The fish was well seasoned and made me smile with every bite. I'm beyond glad that I stopped by for lunch. You should too!
google avatar

Monica C.

Yelp
This is a review about catfish, but also awesome people where you feel well taken care of. I called in after half heatedly looking at the menu online and ordered the catfish. Because catfish is delicious and I always want to eat it. I got the plate with two sides and I cant write enough good things about the sides. The catfish was crispy and flaky and flavorful but the sides were the real star. Super buttery Mac and cheese but this is mostly about sweet potatoes covered in cinnamon goodness. The wonderful person on the phone said it was her favorite and I felt trusting. And THANK YOU!!!! That recommendation changed my day. I want to know the secrets to making something that is a textural delight (so! Pillowy!) But also coated in the best sauce possible. This is the fastest turn around time I've ever had for a review because it was that good and I need everyone to know so they can get their own. Oh and the lemon pepper chicken wings are CRISP and FLAVOR. Hot damn.

Kitty K.

Yelp
Have they shut down? Went 6:45 on a Saturday, hours said open until 8, but locked up, no one there.

Yelp
Me and my husband is vacationing in Seattle for 6 days and wanted to eat some good ole soul food so we decided to look at the delivery apps and found this GEM on DoorDash. Everything looked so delicious that we couldn't just order 1 meal we had to try out other food items on the menu. The Yesler: Huge and delicious burger. Fries: Different but pretty good: Chicken: Crispy and seasoned. Cabbage & Onions: Strangely good and addicting. Kale & Greens: If you like you some greens and kale you'll like this combination. Mac & Cheese: I'm very picky with Mac & Cheese but I got to say that I actually ate it all. Red Beans & Rice: It was cook well just add salt and pepper if you desire. Other then that it was okay on its own. Catfish: Lightly breaded which is a plus and was firm and flaky. The Big Fish: I chose the cod and its more of a sandwich and not a burger. It's on a roll not a bun. The portion size is very generous. Coleslaw: Needed for the palate after eating all that fried food. Overall, this place is a must if your looking for good eats for delivery or just pay the spot a visit and and dine on in.....

Yelp
Got off work, ravished, hangry, my belly screaming for substance. Had a $10 Groupon for Soulful Dishes. Called SD and was beyond excited they still had some collard greens. Just discovered them the 1st of the year. How have I never had collard greens before?? I'm Chinese, we eat everything! Ordered the Sammy burger, Mac N Cheese, Red beans & rice, 1/2 lb of chicken tenders and the infamous collard greens. My palate was dancing with joy. The flavors! The moistness of the chicken! The fresh veggies on my burger, the juiciness of said burger! The best part was the collard greens! Steaming hot just the way I like it! I inhaled the greens and slurped the juices. Belly was completed satisfied. Once again, another satisfied customer. Kudos to the young lady at the front managing orders. Came in for the pickup but my burger wasn't ready. She apologized while the cook started cooking in the back. Customer service was friendly. Definitely will be back! Check out their Groupon!

Kelley P.

Yelp
My shrimp plate was DELICIOUS!!! I consider myself a mac n cheese expert and Soulful Dishes did not disappoint. And I got a chance to taste my sister's ribs and my husband's wings and everything was AMAZING! If you need some soul food in Seattle, you will get your fix here!!

Yelp
Did their restaurant week special of a catfish Po' boy with coleslaw, fries and a drink. The sandwiches were delicious and perfectly crisp. Very friendly staff and mindful of covid safety precautions. Worth a visit! They also have daily specials and I'll be back for their chicken sandwich.

Yelp
Being a southerner I expected some hospitality when I called. The Google ad said they weren't open for almost 45 more min but from street view the door was open. I didn't want to just walk in, there's a table by the door and a lot of places are takeout only right now and don't want you inside. Out of respect for the establishment and what might have been covid precautions, I called and a woman answered. ME: "Oh hi are you already open, and if so do you do dine in or take out only"?. Rude Woman: "Well yes I'm open I answered the phone didn't I?! ME : Well, your Google says you don't open until 4 so I was just checking. Rude Woman: Where does it say that? ME: Google mam. Rude Woman: Well I'll tell MY OWNER to check HIS Google. HUNG up on me. She emphasized "HIS GOOGLE" rudely. She was so rude and sassy, I can only assume I was a bother for even calling. After this we decided we'd eat elsewhere. No idea what set her off but I was actually in shock when I hung up how rude I was just spoke to. Still am. Mostly disappointed I didn't get to eat what folks rave about as such good food.:( First Impressions mean a lot in business.

Yelp
Horrible service and would not recommend to Uber Eat. Please don't waste your time and money, restaurant called saying they ran out of two food items. I told them to refund the missing items and still send the food. Order took one hour to prepare, poor Uber driver waited the whole time to get the food. Finally received the food and it was bland. And to make it even better they never refunded the missing items. $142 down the drain. There are other places to eat, go there instead.

Yelp
The time I went in with my family I don't know if it was under staffed but the food was not good. Catfish was undercooked shrimp was barely fried. I spent a lot of money on the food that I bought to get lackluster quality. The cook had no idea what she was doing when I went.
google avatar

Chelsea G.

Yelp
Had a great lunch here today. Ordered the fried chicken sandwich on recommendation and wasn't disappointed. The chicken was perfectly breaded. Light and crisp while maintaining moist meat. I loved it. The toppings were solid. I think next time I'll ask for extra sauce. I got the sandwich to go and was pleasantly surprised when I opened it at home and saw fries! Really well-priced item and good value. I prefer my fries crispy (these are soft) but they were still tasty. The menu is in the middle of an update so not all items are available currently. He said to check back in a few weeks to see the new offerings! The space is coming along nicely (the owner has big plans for updates - exciting) and we are so happy to have this spot in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Really good - got the shrimp po' boy, the mac and cheese, and the blackened salmon salad. The salad came with quite a bit of salmon, and the salmon had a great mix of spices. The shrimp po' boy was really tasty. There were five shrimp pieces - which was plenty for the sandwich - but the overall price seemed a bit high for $15. The mac and cheese was good, but not anything I would brag about. Not as great as bbq places I've been to. Overall - good food, but pretty overpriced outside of the salmon salad.
