The Soup Doula Delivery Nourishing New Parents in NYC | Eater NY
"Operating as a pop-up and delivery service run by postpartum doula Marisa Mendez Marthaller (with her husband Duane Harriott DJing at the pop-ups), Soup Doula serves handmade, seasonally changing soups from several Crock-Pots and offers both in-person pop-ups and weekly Tuesday deliveries. I observed that the soups are made with organic produce and humanely raised animals, are dairy- and gluten-free, and come in 16- and 32-ounce containers; the current menu lists minestrone, kitchari, red borscht, squash and red lentil purée, turmeric-ginger sipping broth, and a chicken soup, while pop-ups have included red pozole with chicken, a Frito pie, mussels escabeche, jerk chicken tacos, and a chicken–chickpea soup. Launched during the pandemic as a way to help new parents, the service emphasizes soup’s postpartum benefits—high hydration and nutrient density—and complements Mendez Marthaller’s doula work, which can include lactation support, household chores, and emotional and physical care; deliveries run each Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. across Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, and orders can be placed online." - Emma Orlow
