Soup Up

This is a place to be experienced, not just read about on Google or Yelp, hoping that you go there one day. Pictures don’t do it justice. Donna knocks it out of the park with her homemade soups, spring rolls (I couldn’t pick a favorite, they were all THAT good), and desserts. To top it off, she is kind and you can tell she puts a lot of love into her craft and enjoys sharing her gift with others, which makes it even better. I was there for my birthday and she treated me like a queen. I felt like by the time I left I had made a new friend and can’t wait to go back the next time I visit D.C. I would be here every week if I lived in the area. Prepare to go with a big appetite, because you will want to try EVERYTHING.

Since an order of soup starts at $10, it’s easy to spend $25-50 per visit, and I have done so many times since they opened. Today, however, I was so disappointed in the service that I just left. I waited for the server to finish with the gentleman ahead of me and asked her for the chicken noodle soup because I had seen it on the web site (online orders page) before I left home. She advised me that they didn’t have it today and showed me the menu du jour. As I began to order the chicken corn chowder, she turned and served the lady who had walked in behind me. The server said nothing to me and never made eye contact again, even as I walked out. Very sad service, very disrespectful. I will not return. Once was too many. I went to Peaches Kitchen where I spent $50 on chicken and veggie patties, juice, pie, and more. Was in and out in about five minutes WITHOUT THE HASSLE. I don’t understand why some restaurants and stores mistreat their customers, especially at Soup Up’s prices and with so much competition. Goodbye, Soup Up. Do better.

Soup Up 🍲 never disappoints. I have yet to meet a soup there I didn't enjoy. Each one is rich and flavorful and full of love. The honey grilled cheese is also a favorite. Go taste the magic and you will be a convert too!!

I’m pretty excited about my visit today. They had a great deal going: 50% off your soup if you forego the bowl and received the ladle of soup in your hand or in your shoe. I went with my shoe.

We came here for lunch and were very impressed with the homemade soups and sandwiches. They were amazing and super filling. She gave her a sample of all her soups and it was hard to decide which one we wanted more. We'll def be back. P.S. the chicken spring rolls and beef broth are awesome!

China was so pleasant and helpful. The food is delicious and my husband and I will definitely be regular customers here. Great options all across the board; not just soup...which is dang good but wraps, spring rolls, fresh pressed juice and all homemade.

Turkey soup and co co bread. The bread was delicious. The soup was mediocre, no white meat only chopped dark meat with minimal vegetables. Not much better than can soup. For the price I expected better

Some.of rhe best soup and sides in DC. Love the rotating menu. Healthy and tasty. Deserts, cakes and cookies also yummy. Confirmed the blueberry cornbread is amaaaazing. And can't forget the sweet potato cake. Get there before they sell out.

I enjoyed some of the best soup of my life from here- the D.A.M. Good Chicken Soup. It's not your regular chicken soup, but it's everything you didn't know you needed. I ordered a medium and instantly regretted not getting a large, so much so I went back the same week to get it again. Any time I have a craving for a delicious, hearty soup it's for this one. The jerk shrimp rolls also cannot be missed, I love their in-house sweet and sour sauce! The service is also wonderful.

I came here for lunch and was very impressed with the homemade soups and sandwiches options available. The cashier/server gave me a sample of all her soups and it was hard to decide which one to go for. They were all good, but I decided on the Curry Chicken Vegetable Soup. It was the perfect fix on this cold afternoon. The soup was rich and full of flavor throughout. The curry was mild, not spicy and fragrant to taste. The vegetables in the soup were cut rustic and in large chunks which made this dish very hearty. There were loads of chicken cuts within the soup that were so tender and seasoned well. I also order a Jerk Chicken Spring Roll which was not bad. I will say it was a bit on the dry side but still edible and tasted good. In all, a great neighborhood find with healthy food choices. The soups rotate often; weekly and by the season. The customer service was outstanding and the female that assisted me (sorry...I forgot her name) was outstanding. She was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back to try some of their other soup options and menu items. P.S. I heard the jerk shrimp spring rolls and beef bone broth are awesome! Apparently this must be true, because it was sold out the day I came here.

Great food and atmosphere. I had the Good Farmer Omelet and my Lady had the Salmon and Grits

We had a dreary day on a visit to DC and felt like soup would hit the spot. It sure did! We tried the grilled cheese w hot honey and three soups: Sage Chicken, Chicken Chowder, and Cashew Chicken Chickpea. My favorite was the Cashew Chicken w Chickpea but the overall favorite of our group was the Sage Chicken. Delish! We love parked on the street and it was easy parking. There is space to eat inside but probably it more than 5-8 people would fit. Great spot, and can't go wrong with one of these!

This is my go to place for soup. My bf and I travel here at least twice a week. The soup here is amazing and it changes from day to day. Akita also makes the visit very warm and welcoming with her sweet spirit and kindness. This spot is amazing and I recommend if you're looking for some good homemade soup!

This wonderful hidden gem satisfied every craving I was having on a nice day. I almost went to Panera for my soup fix and I'm so glad that I didn't. Upon entering your greeted by a warm welcome and smile from I believe the owner who made the soups herself Akita (sorry if I misspelt ) the soup I opted to get was the lentil, it had such warm, fragrant and nice flavors. The jerk chicken wrap was just perfect it had beautiful jerk seasonings, fresh spinach and peppers just overall a perfect pairing for my soup. After inhaling it all I felt a sense of satisfaction instead of sluggish I felt like I was leaving from a family members house. And wish I could've took leftovers lol this is definitely my new spot, menu changes weekly so you can never expect the same thing until you try the whole menu. Will be back very soon !!

Deliciousness - 5/5 Happiness - 3/5 I debated whether to go 3 or 4 stars (someday Yelp will allow half stars) but ultimately the food was so good I went 4. I ordered a tuna wrap and it was a good size. It had a lot of tuna (I could've gone for a bit more sauce) but it was paired with spicy peppers that really made the entire sandwich have a mouthwatering fiery kick. But I've buried the lead. When your whole thing is soup, then that better deliver. And boy did it deliver. I went with sage tea(!) broth chicken and vegetable soup. The broth was flavorful AND unique. They must have put a bit more than a quarter of a chicken into my soup (medium size) since every bite had tender meat in it. And the veggies were clearly fresh AND unique (mushrooms, peppers, corn on the cob!?). I loved every mouthful... this will absolutely be a new go-to on cold days (which there are too many of in DC). My only disappointment was the relatively small number of options on the menu and that they were already out of jerk chicken wings by the time I ordered (only midway through the lunch period). They then sent an email with no explanation with a refund meaning I had to call them to find out what had happened. I feel like they should call or text to ask if I want to continue the order or sub something out in this scenario. Also, I really wish the soup came with a roll. That would give a little more substance to the meal. But since the deliciousness is 5/5.... it worked perfectly great without it.

Just had the vegan Green Machine soup. One of the best soups I ever had and I'm not even vegan. Excellent food always!

Walked in and the woman behind the counter wasn't wearing a mask and actively serving people. Walked out. Was scary. Very sorry to post this and it only has to do with conduct, not food.

I haven't eaten here, here's why. I called to ask what kind of soup they have, the lady on the phone said cauliflower soup and chicken curry soup. I asked what she recommended and she said the chicken curry soup. Sounded great until she said she was recommending it because it was almost all gone. I've worked in the restaurant business for about thirty years. There are ways to entice a customer and a way to turn them off. I don't want the old soup you are trying to get rid of!

Just love this place! It's been years since I've been here and I'm sooo happy they made it threw the pandemic years. True authentic food is so hard to find in DC nowadays so many restaurants are open for social media and they forget people came there to eat primarily, lol. We ordered the jerk wings, jerk grilled cheese, jerk shrimp egg rolls, and soup (I forgot the kind but it was delicious ). The jerk wings sauce was extremely HOT just fyi, it's the real thing Caribbean food as well. The meat just fall right off the bone as well. A staple in the community and I hope the city does what it can to keep this place in the city - like they've done with Ben's Chili Bowl on U street.

Soup was excellent. Options change frequently, which is good and bad if there a particular soup you really like. Wish they delivered to Southwest.

I'm glad we have a soup place in my neighborhood and I'm glad that the soup is pretty tasty. I'm not glad that a small is eight dollars, a medium $10, and a large $17 - and they don't even come with a roll. I understand times are tough but Kennedy Street is not 14th St. I fear this shop will go the way of other promising establishments that opened in the area, only to close very quickly because they charged far too much for the part of town they're in. If they could get their prices down by just a couple dollars, I'm sure they would attract more customers. As it is, $10 for a bowl of soup is pretty exorbitant, so as tasty as my fresh herb roasted turkey soup was -- and as much as I would like to make the shop a regular staple -- it will only be an occasional treat.

Good food or not, I don't do attitude. Especially that whole nice-nasty thing. I came in and ordered some soup as well as one of the spring rolls. The gentleman behind the register was obviously new, and was trying his best to multitask. He took my order, and put my spring roll in the toaster oven. While we were waiting for it to warm, he took another person's order. He was trying to find a particular item on the register and couldn't find it. In the process, my spring roll got overcooked. When he took it out of the toaster oven, it was black on the ends. I very politely told him that this one was overcooked and that I would like another one, adding that he didn't have to toast it for me. It wasn't a big deal, and he was super apologetic about it, but at just that time this woman comes from out of the kitchen and interjects herself into the conversation. I guess she's the owner. I don't know. I don't care. Anyway, she interjects herself in the conversation and, with that nice-nasty tone, tells me that she'll "give" me another one... but that the one I rejected is not burned. Sweetheart, I may wear contact lenses but I'm far from blind. If something is black on the ends, that indicates that it's been over cooked. She added that she would 'let me have' the burnt one so that I could 'taste the difference'. Who the hell wants some burned ass food? And the way she said it, she made it sound like she was doing me a favor. I have plenty of coins in my wallet honey, so those overcooked handouts are definitely not necessary. I very politely declined her offer and asked the gentleman again to get me a new spring roll. She starts becoming aggressive and adamant, both about how the item is not burned, and how she *really* wants me to have the overcooked item so I can taste it. What she didn't know is that I'd had the spring rolls (properly warmed) before, and they looked nothing like this "gift" she was purportedly trying to give me. It quickly became evident that she was not going to let this go and was looking for a confrontation. Apparently her pride and self-worth were wrapped too tightly around this food item. So, rather than let it spoil my day, I took the damn thing home to snap a few pictures of it for Yelp before tossing it out. This is the kind of foolishness that will kill a small business. The gentleman behind the counter and I were working out the situation without incident, and her intervention was not required. She should have stayed in the kitchen, where she was, and let that man do his job. But apparently her pride wouldn't allow her to say a simple, "Oh, sorry about that. Let's get you a new one." Well, that pride over a $2.50 egg roll just cost you a customer. Sooner or later, folks will learn that you can't treat people any kind of way. Especially when you want their business. Look around at all the other businesses in this corridor that have had to shut their doors and let that be a lesson. Keep treating people like that and that's just how you'll end up.

Donna is the soul of the soups. Her enthusiasm for making and bringing folks quality foods is what makes this place so special. We taste tested several soups and got two different bowls, the jerk chicken, egg roll, and also cornbread (with chocolate balsamic vinegar!). Just try and order everything available, you will be glad you did. Wish I had ordered more soup to go.

Delicious and satisfying soup! The owner is so caring. She wanted to know if there were any issues, such as a sore throat, so she could recommend the right soup! She gave me samples of the various soups and all were very tasty.

So glad to have Soup Up in the neighborhood! Everything is delicious & homemade with generous portions of meat and veg. This has turned into one of my favorite lunch spots. Thanks Donna & team!

Walking around the Union Market, we came across Soup Up. Employees here are super sweet, helpful, and have a great sense of humor. They offer soup, spring rolls, salad, chicken wings, etc. The menu is simple and lovely. They focus on quality ingredients and are forking out delicious eats. Soup was a perfect choice on this cool day. It was seasoned well, not overly salty and filled with veggies and meats. Comfort food all the way! Pair that with one of their spring rolls, it's a win win. Some seating is available. They also sell containers of their soups for you to take home.

I want to support my local small businesses as much as possible but the flavor is just not on-point... I think there was too much pepper or something in the food I got, some kind of jerk egg rolls? Price is kind of ridiculous for what you get. The woman running this establishment is extremely friendly and goes above and beyond with customer service. I think if there was just more people working here and some change in the recipe this place would be top-notch.

The soup is great, but the prices are way too high. The portions don't justify the price. I couldn't bring myself to go back and spend that much on such a small container of soup.

Very disappointed. I drove specifically to try this place and it said it opens at 11. I waited and even drank a coffee next door and 1140 still closed and no one inside! On top of that this place was featured on yelp! Good job Yelp!

this was not the type of place i usually go to, but i came away impressed. soups taste darn good and their jerk chicken spring rolls were bangin! i forgot the names of the soups i tried but i think they were "damn good chicken soup" and "lasagna" the chicken soup was like chicken noodle soup without the noodles. the broth was good. i really liked the lasagna soup. as others have mentioned previously, their prices ARE a lil high but what can you expect with small businesses during COVID times? pretty much everything has gone up. i would repeat if i happen to be in the area again. i recommend!

The chicken soup is by far the most delicious soup I've ever tried. As someone who doesn't typically like chicken soup , I actually crave this one. The yam and apple spring rolls are also delicious. All the soups I've had from here have been great and filling.

This is the Best Soup in town!!! We drove almost an hour just to get this soup. Donna is amazing!! She told us about her whole menu and took her time with us even though it was closing time. The corn bread and spring rolls are amazing!! Don't forget to try the lavender lemonade!! I highly recommend Soup Up for all your Jamaican flavors.

I declare, 2018 is the year of restaurant reboots so help me God! First seeing Taste of Jamaica make a comeback and then a stand-alone, Soup Up. Union Market has never been a place that I've frequented. I just haven't gotten into a Union Market rhythm. I like and have liked many of the spots there, I just never make it there for return visits. Such is the case for the first iteration of Soup Up. I made it there once or twice, liked it and them saw that it was dearly departed. But not so fast, Soup Up is not only back, it has upgraded. They were calling for snow and I wanted to be healthy so I thought I would get soup for lunch. I had tried to hit up the new location but it was a Monday, and they are closed on Mondays so I had to wait. For my visit, I really wanted one of the Spring Rolls and some soup and something to drink. I saw the Spicy Jamaican Pumpkin soup and was sold on that easy. Then the woman who was taking my order asked was I Vegan. Watch this: give me one of them Curry Chicken Spring Rolls. I just don't like labels but label chicken curry and I am down with it. To wash it all down I got the Carrot Orange Juice. The soup was good and it was spicy. I enjoyed it so much I spilled some on my coat. I got the Medium soup and I could have actually made out fine with a Small. My favorite element of my meal, I must say was that Spring Roll. I could see myself eating quite a few more of those before my day is done. Indeed.

The soup is so good. It's filling, healthy, and super flavorful - can't really ask for anything more. They have a rotating selection and you really can't go wrong with whatever you choose. It's a tad on the expensive side for sure, but I don't mind paying for good ingredients. The only thing they can improve upon is that service / the way the place is run is a bit hit or miss. For example, I've come by at least once during open hours only to find that the place is actually closed with no explanation. Since I don't live particularly close, this is a bit of an inconvenience. Other than that, the food is definitely worth a try.

Recently moved from Shaw, and didnt expect a neighborhood soup/juice place right down the street from where I live. REALLY good soup selection, she recommended one of their shrimp rolls, and It was ON POINT. Looking forward to trying their juices next

Finally had a chance to try this welcome addition to the neighborhood, which I've been meaning to try for ages now. The plusses: 1. Rotating selection of really good, really flavorful soups. Some are vegan and some are not -- so there's a little something for everyone. If you're familiar with another local soup joint (Soupergirl), I'd say that Soup Up soups are far superior to the former. 2. Delicious spring rolls. I mean, my word -- those things are finger licking, lip smacking good. I could have eaten two...or three...or four...you see where this is going! 3. Yummy vegan soft-serve "ice"cream. The waitress gave me an unsolicited small sample of the "ice" cream. It was chocolate (and I don't even do chocolate dairy ice-cream) so I didn't even want to try it. But I ate it obligingly so as not to spurn her kind gesture. WELL LET ME TELL YOU -- it was DELICIOUS! I didn't even have a chance to tell her that I don't like chocolate desserts of any kind...that I hope this wasn't made with soy milk, as I don't eat soy products...or that I was on a whole-food plant based diet and trying not to eat sugar. I just took one for the team and downed the whole thing. And I enjoyed every minute of it, too! 4. Love that a great business has come to Kennedy Street. We need more places like this here! The minuses: 1. When I walked in, the sole employee was sitting at a high-top table eating her own lunch. When she saw me, she stopped and walked behind the counter to wait on me. She did not wash her hands (ugh, cringe!) or even do the even more cringeworthy thing of grabbing some gloves with her dirty, unwashed hands (as untrained people often do at other food establishments). I legit had to satisfy myself that she wouldn't be touching my soup with her bare hands to even follow through with the transaction. But it definitely makes me question food-handling practices here if she doesn't understand that she must wash her hands upon return to the food area. This is so basic!!! 2. I ordered my soup and paid, then waited for her to fix it. While I'm waiting, I take a look at the stack of menus in front of me to see what other soup flavors are generally sold there. The employee said that those new menus had just been printed that day and were brand new. Well, lo and behold, the prices printed on that menu were cheaper than what I had JUST been charged for my soup. HUH!?!?! When I pointed that out, she said that the menu must be a mistake and that she'd let the owner know. Needless to say, I felt like I'd been overcharged. But since I'd already paid the higher price (granted, I didn't know any different at that time) I decided not to make a fuss about it. On second thought, perhaps that's why she gave me the free sample of the vegan soft-serve -- to make up for that snafu... All in all, Soup Up is a delicious option that is worth a visit! I wish it many years of success in the revitalizing Kennedy Street neighborhood.

If it wasn't for the food which is very good, I would give this place 1/5 rating... The food is overpriced. For a small bowl of soup they charge almost 10 dollars. For a 5 pieces of jerk chicken wings (very small plate), they charge you almost 9 dollars. I understand that small business have to charge more, but spending basically $25 on what come's up to appetizers portions or less its pretty bad.... Considering Kennedy Street has affordable places to eat, and low income families, I wonder how they are able to get that many people. Also the customer service really need to improve, i spend almost 20 minutes there waiting for food that was already partially made and only need it to be heat up. Also whoever is at the front always gives you an vibe that they dont want you there.... or are "why are you bothering me attitude"..... kind makes you scared to order lol!! Charming soup and sandwich shop in Brightwood Park. I got the jerk chicken wrap (delicious!) and was tempted by all the soups on rotation when I visited. I'll be back to try to order them all!

Super cute soup shop with delicious soups. I tried the açaí bowl and it was fantastic! I really loved that it came with fresh fruit. I also sampled and bought several soups to take home. I'll definitely be back to try the ice cream and other freshly made soups. The owner is really friendly too.

Simply amazing! I had a large in both the seafood & chicken.. the seafood was honestly the BEST seafood broth style type of soup that I ever had hands down anyone reading this, I definitely recommend checking them out! (Also, it's a vegan cashew soup that I tried, very flavorful) #Ownedbyladies

Spring Rolls 5/5 Customer Service 2/5 Prices 3/5 So I came here thinking I was going to get some soup. I had a few samples, which were good, but then realized the small soup costs about $10... Personally, I'm not going to pay $10 for soup. The woman behind the counter was also less than pleasant and had her baby on the floor on the other side of the restaurant. I understand and sympathize that sometimes working mothers have to bring their babies with them. But they shouldn't leave that baby out of sight, in a carrier on the floor, where anyone has access to them. All of the spring rolls I tried ( curry chicken, jerk chicken, jerk shrimp) were fantastic.

First time here and I REALLY enjoyed it!!! I thought I would be able to finish this full medium but I'm tapping out. Will definitely be back again! Apparently, the menu changes every day which I think is really cool as well.

This place is phenomenal and one of a kind. Everything is made in house and everyday has different soup specials. That's how you know this is a home grown business; which also happens be owned and ran by the sweetest, most personable woman. I honestly suggest ordering in and getting to know the amazing people that own this place. I went on the first chilly, rainy day of the season and was beyond pleased to find she had tomato soup AND was ecstatic to find she had grilled cheese. It was like my childhood all over again but the soup was miles better than anything canned (sorry Campbell's). Soup is not just a winter thing! I was craving their summer seasonal soups during the dog days of summer. They also have handmade smoothies and a variety of vegan treats. Possibly my favorite part is the egg rolls. I could fill up alone on their Curry and Jerk rolls. They're so well cooked and not like anything you'd get through takeout. Guys, do not miss out on this place! It's a family business in the growing Kennedy street heights neighborhood that NEEDS your support. Hopefully I'll see you there!

I come here all the time. They have delicious soups and teas & juices. I don't know what is in their signature chicken soup, but my sick twin sons were up bouncing around the walls again after eating it. It's just good food!

The spiciness of their dishes was on point! First time here and I loved everything I ordered. The young lady who catered to us was very kind and helpful. Refreshing ambiance and the avocado plant on the tables were a bonus to look at.

I am so happy this place opened its own spot! The food here is amazing! My husband and I went for brunch after church and got an omelette, shrimp and grits, soup, and jerk wings! The soup is so delicious here and the jerk wings were surprisingly good/spicy! We plan to come back often. The customer service was great as well :) Next time I plan to try the spring rolls and jerk chicken sandwich in coco bread!

We went there for the first time today, and came away quite impressed. My wife and I both got variations of chicken soup--she the Jamaican style, and mine a style called simply "dam good chicken soup." And it was. Both were hearty and flavorful, perfect for a cool early spring day. I also tried a jerk chicken roll, which was similarly flavorful and had just a bit of kick. The owner is very friendly, and mentioned plans soon for weekend brunch and an expanded breakfast menu. There were a number of containers of soup available for taking home, along with some salads. I hope more people seek this spot out, because the quality is very good, and it's nice to have a unique and healthy option in the neighborhood.

Great addition to the Kennedy street businesses. I have been there twice in a month and I will definitely keep coming. So far have tried the Dam good Chicken soup and the spring rolls jerk chicken and shrimp. The staff there are overwhelmingly nice and helpful. I have been dying to try the jerk wing but they never have it. I also got a sample of the Matcha ice cream and it is deliciously refreshing. Can't wait to try other food items on the menu.

I recommend the jerk / curried / and scallion chicken spring rolls. Jerk chicken wings are tasty too. Plus their carrot juice is so good. Their website is done well. I will return to Soup Up for their seasonal offerings. Located in Union Market Soup Up's samples hit the spot.

Best SOUP in DC!!! First soups I've had in DC where I thought, "This soup doesn't need anything!". Ms. Donna is a culinary genius, bringing that Jamaican flavor to KDY. Great people, great product, great customer service!
