A Tale of Two Portland Food Carts and a Stifling Heat Wave | Eater Portland

"I was told that Hatch spent time working at the Psychic Bar pop-up Sunshine Noodles and that it “kind of felt like a food cart” because there was no insulation, meaning the space was unprotected from extreme temperatures much like a cart." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The food was perfectly fine-not a standout, but certainly not bad. For my taste, the pho was quite salty, which was the one slight drawback. However, the atmosphere is a huge win! I really enjoyed the fun vibe and absolutely loved all the Dragon Ball decor around

I came to Jacksonville for work and Soupa Noodle Bar was one of the places that kept coming up on TikTok, so I decided to try it, and honestly it was so worth it. The whole experience was incredible. The place itself is amazing and I love that everything is done through machines, so you don’t even have to talk to anyone if you don’t want to. The decoration was one of my favorite parts because it has this fun anime vibe, everything is super colorful and visually really pleasing. They even have little arcade machines where kids can play, and honestly adults can too. It gives the place such a cheerful and lively atmosphere without feeling overwhelming. It was completely packed and still, my food came out before I even sat down at my table, which blew my mind. They have so many options and I love the fact that you can build your own bowl exactly how you want it. They offer two sizes, a kid size and a large size. I eat a lot and even the kid size was perfect for me because it left space for appetizers. I ordered takoyaki and they were insanely good, super fresh, hot and flavorful. I also got a jasmine and honey boba tea that was refreshing and really delicious. Another thing I loved is that they have Happy Hour every weekday from Monday to Friday from three to six, and on Saturdays and Sundays from three to five. It’s honestly worth it because you can order several appetizers and even ramen bowls at a lower price, which makes the whole experience even better. There are tons of dessert options, ramen variations and appetizers to choose from, so you’re definitely not going to run out of things to try. Between the three things I ordered, I spent about twenty five dollars, and I would one hundred percent come back. If you want ramen that comes out fast and tastes amazing, this is the place to go. The broth was full of flavor, the ramen was piping hot and the noodles were cooked perfectly. I honestly wish I could go back ten more times. If you’re in Jacksonville or live nearby, this is definitely a spot you need to check out.

This is a hidden gem in Jacksonville, inspired by Japanese anime comics! The decor is fantastic, and their noodle soups and appetizers are incredibly delicious. During my first visit, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that they serve udon and pho alongside ramen! I tried the Curry Laksa (a spicy coconut milk broth) – Singaporean noodles, and the Kaio Mami (a savory and sweet broth) – Filipino noodles. Both dishes exceeded my expectations! We also enjoyed the "Build Your Own Bowl" option, where you can add your favorite toppings to your chosen noodles. My gluten-free and vegan friends will definitely love this place! The prices are very reasonable, with small sides starting at $10, which was more than enough to fill me up. You can also opt for "Kaedama," which is extra noodles. If you haven't been here, its time for you to try it.

SOUPA BLAND! I’m highly confused as to how this place has so many positive reviews. The soup was incredibly bland. Like nothing could save it. It’s incredibly overpriced. The women’s bathroom was covered in black mold. The karaage was fine and the boba was very mid. I wouldn’t recommend this place at all and I will not be coming back. Waste of money.

The good: This place is vibrantly anime themed. The food is relatively tasty and reasonably priced. The bubble tea was great with lots of choices of add-ins. The merch seemed fun. The place is clean and the food came out promptly. The meh: The large anime statues are cool, but both are broken. The plastic silverware is low quality (my bad for not using chopsticks). The napkin dispenser rips every napkin. The veggie potstickers were sold out. The bad: 1) The “steamed veggies” in the “build your own bowl” were completely raw. 2) They closed at least 15 minutes prior the posted closing time. Not only did they turn on ALL the lights while we were finishing up as a clear indication that they wanted us to get the hell out, they turned away a group of 4 and a group of 2 who arrived at least 15 minutes before close (with the open sign still on). 3) The ambiance could be an anime lovers dream, but the music completely killed the vibe. Rather than playing anything remotely related to the restaurant theme, loud, sad, American-made R&B blared from the speakers. We wanted to LOVE this place. Instead, I think we will just do carry-out, well before the posted closing time.

The atmosphere? Wonderful. Cute little nerdy place. The food, though? Even chili oil couldn’t save it from the blandness, and neither of us even finished our food. The meatballs are also not meatballs in a normal sense - technically they are balls of meat, but the texture and flavor are nothing like any meat I’ve ever eaten. Really, save yourself the money and time, and eat something that actually has any flavor at all.

Soupa Noodle has delicious food and an awesome vibe in the restaurant! They seriously have some of the best noodles I have ever had. The SOUPA MKRT I applied to be a vendor at was postponed multiple times, which was disappointing, as I really would’ve liked to be a part of it. (It was a bit difficult to get a refund on the market, but it was eventually resolved.)
