A gem in downtown SB! Must see for anyone passing through. Free to visitors, and a really interesting collection. Bonus: they have amazing classes so anyone can learn and practice with different media, including ceramics, paints, and fiber arts.

Take an art class from SBMA the instructors are so sweet and amazing! I have only taken Pottery and Lisa is the best, I'll definitely be taking more. You seriously won't regret!!

Love the South Bend Museum of Art. It has great collection and does fascinating exhibits of living artists. Great first Friday opening receptions. Love their Around the Bend biennial exhibit of regional artists.

Absolutely beautiful place free admission, there’s all kinds of different paintings, sculptures, and even some graphic design pieces, the building itself is gorgeous and has a nice view of the water overlooking the city.

Very nicely maintained museum. I love seeing the different art from the schools in the area as well.

An airy exhibition experience with utility rooms for hire. Our family recently enjoyed the well host(ess)ed Scholastic Arts Awards.

Check out the eclectic exhibit at Around the Bend on display until June 26! An amazing array of styles, techniques, textures and colors! Take extra time to view some of the important pieces of the Museum’s collection by Garber, Dudley, Aldrich, Steele and more!

It was free and the staff were nice. Definitely a place to visit, and if you live in the area, try visiting every other month to see what they switch out.

Yelp
It's tiny but a well-curated small town art museum that is usually free to enter and some good permanent pieces in the year round collection. Some temporary exhibits are better than others... and that's all I'll say about that... The temporary exhibit featuring the work of Melanie Daniel and Max Kauffman that is about to end was phenomenal! I'll likely be moving to SB in the next year or so, so I anticipate coming here a lot more often.

Yelp
When you enter - there are 2 separate galleries - one on your left and one on your right. Each are separate into about three different areas. The focus is on artists from the geographic area. All is worthy of being displayed - maybe not for a major metro area but ideal for South Bend. And it is free! Very easy to see everything. There are actual teachers providing courses for kids to learn as well. Took me just under an hour.

Yelp
Beautiful art in a beautiful building! Donations are appreciated as payment for entry which is more then fair. Lots of interesting pieces on display with simple yet accurate descriptions next to the pieces so I never felt like I had to explain the art to my 14 year old. She was able to admire and then learn about each piece easily. Very open concept area which allowed for a great deal of natural light to filter in. Just the right amount of benches to rest and reflex on very nice gift shop with many original paintings, pottery and jewelry. Everyone was very warm and welcoming as well. Great place!!!

Yelp
I love art history, museums and the like, I really do. With that said, this is easily the most uninteresting art museum I've ever encountered. Largely uninspired collections, unmotivated and untrained staff and a real lack of focus in terms of what the museum is trying to represent. Usually, an art museum has a specific focus in mind when determining collections and exhibitions. With South Bend Museum of Art, it's more of a lack of concrete focus than anything. I've been here a few times and never once did I feel compelled to really "take in" the experience. The museum is lackluster at best, with a real lack of originality when it comes to cultivating collections and special exhibits. As someone who has been to many an art museum, this one takes the cake for being as blah and cookie cutter as they come. I think the curators need to seriously rethink what they believe makes a good art exhibit, because right now, they are heading in the wrong direction. To top it off, much of the staff is largely untrained or just plain doesn't care about the art, itself, or providing assistance of any kind. The docents are definitely not well-versed in either museum policy or many of the exhibitions. In fact, a few are borderline rude. Chasing down patrons and accusing them of photographing artwork with their phones (it didn't happen to me, but I've seen it happen before) and then demanding to see the phones, which prove them wrong, is rather embarrasing, no?

Yelp
My kids have taken several art camps here over the years and have always had a great experience. We recommend them!

Yelp
All the events I have attended at the museum have been wonderful. They have something to appeal to everyone from social gatherings like meet me on the island to museum receptions featuring various contemporary artists and events where you can bid on pieces of art. I myself have 7 pictures and 4 pieces of pottery over the last 3 years. Love it! I have relatives whose children have attended art classes at the museum and have become budding artists themselves. You have to check it out!!
