South Garden Chinese Restaurant

Went with three other people it was very busy. We got seated within less than ten minutes. I ordered chicken almond, hot and sour soup, egg roll, steamed rice, and ice tea. All was served very fast and hot. My plate has lots of chicken, celery, carrots, and a delicious sauce. I've eaten here many times and have always been very satisfied with food and service. I've also had the orange chicken which is also very good but this time I wanted a dish with vegetables. I'm a big eater and I took almost half of my food home. It will make a good dinner for the next day. Don't pass this place by. Good job South garden. I'll be back.

No matter if you eat there or get it to go, it's always going to be hot and delicious!! I have been eating hear since I was a teen and now my teens only eat here !! Great service, wonderful staff and just a all around get dining experience!

I’ve been here several times since about two months ago!! The combination plates of beef 🥩 and broccoli 🥦 with lemon 🍋 chicken 🍗 fried rice, 🍚 egg roll and 🥚 egg drop soup is amazing!🤩 The staff is friendly and welcoming! My overall experience HAS been and IS a 10 out of 10!! If I could rate this higher I would!! You must give it a try so you too will be a VERY SATISFIED 💯🤤 CUSTOMER!! Thank you to the cooks, staff up front, & the phone operator taking orders!! Keep up the amazing 🤩 job.

So 4.5 🌟. Our waiter was fantastic. Very attentive with good timing. Our food came out BLAZING fast. One dish could feed 3 adults. I'm serious! And it was yummy. I didn't like how dark the restaurant was. And the acoustics made it difficult to hear each other. The egg drop soup tastes very literal. 😂

The food has always been great here it has not disappointed my family or me. The customer service is very awesome especially this one particular waiter by the name of Armando. He has great manners, from start to end he will treat you with very great respect. I'm reluctantly giving this restaurant 5 stars - because the food was tasty. I wanted to not give them this good review but the food made up for them passing their cost of doing business to customers: charging a credit card service fee. A big pet peeve of mine. My girlfriend enjoyed her General Tso chicken and egg rolls. I really enjoyed the Hot n Sour soup with my Sesame Chicken entrée. Will definitely go back.

I'd have to say this is a solid Chinese spot!! We have been looking everywhere for crab Rangoon (apparently Texas is big on cheese wontons instead) so we were so happy to find them. The sesame chicken was delicious. It had great flavor and was juicy. The fried rice however was...sad. Very dry. For some reason, we must be rice fanatics because everywhere we go, this is a major factor in if we will return lol. My white rice was good, kinda hard to mess up a steamed rice though. I enjoyed my sweet and sour chicken, but some pieces were a little chewy and I had to leave about 5-6 pieces in the container to throw out because of the chewy texture. This happens often with this dish though because of the different sizes so maybe I'll get something else next time. The egg drop soup was super yummy! Perfect amount of saltiness and piping hot. The owners are super nice. They threw in extra crab rangoon which is ALWAYS appreciated :) we picked up so cannot comment on the dining experience but everyone was super friendly when we walked in. I'd say the only thing is that the price was a little more than I'm used to. We paid about $45 + tip for 2 entrees, 1 soup, and a side of 4 crab Rangoon.

The food was delicious some more than others but overall so good. The service was good this one nice lady was amazing wish I got her name. I highly recommend it's affordable to for me and the family.

Restaurant is tucked in a mini strip mall, if you blink you may miss. Restaurant has beautiful Asian decor, large windows facing the parking lot. We had our family dinner here! Party of 6! Never seen such a cleaner restaurant! The customer service was impeccable! Glasses never empty! Questions answered! Oh & let me tell you, huge portions! Prices were inexpensive! Family of 6 plus appetizers incl tip, $114! Did I tell you, the food was absolutely amazing for American Chinese food! I absolutely loved it here, guarantee you we will be back! Please do not miss the fried rice combo, this could easily serve 4-6 people! No protein skimping, here!

Very cool find. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Food was delicious, hot and flavorful. Dining room was clean and spacious. Used Yelp to find this spot, based off location and once again I left satisfied. Lunch specials through the weekend and after church is no problem to find a seat. Look forward to going back.

We were in the area doing some shopping and we came upon this restaurant. I was a little nervous because I don't like to eat at new places, but we decided to try it out anyway. The service was amazing our waiter was very attentive and food came out fast and delicious. The place was clean there is a strong smell when you enter that made me nervous but overall food was delicious, it came out super hot and portions were big we even took some leftovers home.

Driving by, hungry for Chinese food and decided to stop. Most of the reviews say the food is decent and I would agree. Nothing special here, but they have been in business for 26 yrs, so maybe we ordered the wrong items. Here's what we ordered: Sweet and Sour shrimp Lemon chicken Egg rolls Egg drop soup with wonton chips Pork fried rice Crab Rangoon Total for 2- $46.51 Upon walking in it was very clean and bright. A gentleman greeted us right away and sat us at a table. I was surprised there was not too many ppl, because the parking lot was PACKED when we got there. A very energetic, nice guy came and took our drink order right away & drinks were severed quickly. Soups came soon after we ordered. I will say the servers disposition and efficiency were EXCELLENT. Soup was runny and Di not have much flavor, same for crispy wontons, no flavor and very cold. Food was ok, the batter on chicken and shrimp did not have much flavor. Lemon chicken over cooked and dry, shrimp was not cleaned, but I would say that's most places. Pork fried rice was GREAT, lots of flavor. If the food would have been better, we would go back. Ordered via GrubHub, just a pork fried rice and eggrolls. The pork fried rice was good, so were the eggrolls, less common taste, with a prominent ginger taste. I had not been here in many years, at least since 2005. But now it is on GrubHub so now it is on my to-go-for-delivery rotation.

I've been coming here for years. The service and food are always great!! The staff has always been so nice and accommodating. Prices can't be beat for the specials! Be sure to order a tea - it's super refreshing! To go orders only right now during the pandemic. You can order online and food is almost always ready within 15 minutes. You must wear a mask to pick up and once you walk in there's a table with plexiglass barriers. Ordering online means totally contactless. I would go that route but you can also call in your order as well and pay when you arrive. I felt very safe ordering my food and love how they've adjusted! Check their Instagram for updates! I placed a to-go order for mixed vegetables with black bean sauce, it's spicy, saucy, and flavorful. I will definitely be going back!

You might miss it due to the building construction, but it's open. Friendly staff. Health department score of 97. Egg drop soup and fried wontons are pretty good. I've tried the Imperial shrimp. They were good, but there is a lot of breading, a little too much for my taste. The sauce is good but a bit sweet. It comes on the side. The sesame chicken is good, better than most. It's not too sweet and is not gelatinous like some. The side of fried rice is plain but nothing a little soy sauce won't fix. The Rangoon's are also good. I would come again, especially since it is so cheap and quick.

The best place to get your Chinese food fixed!!!! I always get hunan beef, hot sour soup with fried rice. I live about 35 mins from the restaurant but always manage to drive for the BEST Chinese food. Everyone is super nice and service is fast!!!! Please give them a try, it's worth it!

Excellent service. Excellent food. It's quick too! The egg drop soup and crab rangoon is some of the best I've had. Lo mien and kung po chicken were also delicious. I will definitely be back.

I absolutely love this place I usually go for take out and it's always fresh and they are always so friendly they don't complain if you ask for extra soy sauce or sauce of any kind if ur looking for good fresh reasonably priced with large portions this is the place to go

He gave me excellent recommendations and I really enjoyed finding a new spot. Large portions, so you can definitely get at least another meal out of it. Fresh quality ingredients and great PRICES are phenomenal especially for the delicious qualities of the food. Try it you'll be back, I know I will.

Chicken Hunan was great, fried rice was good and the egg drop soup was decent. My only complaint would be the egg roll that came with the meal which to me it tasted like H‑E‑B frozen egg roll.

Pretty decent Chinese food. Great value for lunch, I like that they give you two big scoops of fried rice. I got the pork and green beans and asked for it to be spicy but there was no spice added, but the friendly and quick waitress was right there with both sriracha and their own chili-oil. Still needed not just spice but soy and also a little salt and black pepper, I do wish their food was seasoned a bit more, but for regular Chinese food for lunch this was a good portion that I almost couldn't finish for under ten bucks and while not the most flavorful it was made well. Service is extremely fast and pleasant and I saw the owner talking with a few customers and he seemed really cool and caring.

Really good American Chinese food. Delivery was fast and the food arrived still hot. The wonton soup, hot and sour soup, crag rangoons, and spring rolls were all delicious. The General Tsos has a weird sauce so order something else but the chicken in the dish had chunks of real chicken. Overall delicious!

Overall food was below average... wouldn't even consider it alright. The food all tasted canned and heated, no seasoning to even try to mask the foul flavors. More specifically the Lo Mein was one of, if not the worst Lo Mein I've ever had. Took two bites of the noodles, tried the chicken, shrimp and pork in it and instantly had to give it back. I've never done that before nor do I ever write a bad review. I paid $63 for 4 people, that's not including the Lo Mein that they removed from the ticket. Server was great 5/5 stars. The menu was overwhelming, the more and more I read and tried to decide on eating the more I lost my appetite. Panda Express is a much better experience, price, and flavor. Don't waste your time or money here.

My favorite place to eat. Great service. The owner is always there making sure the food is delivered with a smile. Egg Rolls and Cheese Rangoon are some of my wife and kids goto options.

03/10/19 I don't understand why we seem to forget about this restaurant. It's not that far from where we live and it's quite tasty. Generous portions for a fair price. Today I ordered P2, BBQ pork with vegetables in a brown sauce. The husband had the combination lo mein. The shrimp in this dish were huge! Service is very good. Attentive, but not obtrusive. They do a killer to go business, so don't be put off by an uncrowded dining room. Go there.

Very poor service , we saw a roach crawling down the wall , we let know the server and she just said okay I'll let the owner know . We complained again to the one in charged and they just stayed quiet.We also requested the detailed receipt but they denied it and said we could check the menu for the prices . DO NOT COME HERE , the food it is not worth it.

My mom and I stopped here for lunch at 130 on a Wednesday it wasn't busy and we were greeted and shown to a table right away. First the good: the service was friendly and my mom said the egg drop soup was good. Now the bad: food was out within 5 minutes, which means it's just sitting in the kitchen waiting under a heat lamp or a warmer. Lemon chicken was dried out, fried rice was dried out and mom said they were not very good flavor-wise. I got the only vegetarian option on the limited lunch menu, vegetables in white sauce with steamed white rice. Veggies and white rice were cooked perfectly, unfortunately there was no flavor to the sauce. Almost 18 dollars before tip, not worth it for the quality/taste.

Been coming here for the past 2 years and the food is consistent. I rarely crave chinese and I know South Garden has my back when I'm in the mood for some good Kung Pao Chicken. Their hot and sour soup is delicious too. Don't forget the crispy egg roll!

Food was good and lunch special was at a good price. Just under $10 for a meal. Had the sweet and sour shrimp, first time seeing it, but it was really good. AND the shrimp were CLEAN, I know most places don't especially when it's breaded.

When I got the plate I put that rice aside and didn't eat it. The chicken was sooo dry and hard I ate what I could and drenched it in lemon sauce just so it's edible. I complained asking for another chicken they gave me another dry and hard as a rock chicken. I asked for a discount and they gave me 4$ off I asked why not the whole plate be comp since I didn't eat the rice the manager aka cashier said no because i atemost of it which again i bought extra rice. THEY DONT CARE ABOUT CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND ARE RUDE. NEVER WILL I GO BACK. IF YOU want hard chicken this is your place to come also, rice I paid $12 was tasteless but I drenched in lemon sauce

Was craving some fried rice so I found myself at this place, I went around 3PM the special of the day was Garlic Chicken which came with your choice of rice or fried rice, an egg roll and a sweet tea but I had a sprite instead. The customer service is really outstanding! Restaurant also very clean. The Garlic Chicken was Bland, and not that much of Chicken pieces in it. The rice was dry and lacked flavor The egg roll had this weird taste I don't even know how to explain it. I was disappointed that this food did not live up to all the hype on their yelp reviews! The egg drop soup was a 5 star! One star for customer service, one for the cleanness, and one for the soup. The chips for the soup were fresh Affordable, & ++++KID FRIENDLY

Summary: Don't go here, flavorless, too fatty, so so bland Ordered general tso's chicken & Mongolian beef. Also had a side of hot and sour soup. Everything has no flavor... sooo disappointed. Paid $20 for nothing.... literally took a couple of bites and am planning to throw it away. I don't like to waste food but this really isn't good.

Amazing customer service my family and I have been going to this restaurant for years and to be exact. They continually offer a great service my family and most of them please we are no each other by name let's have a lot about their service along with that we never leave unsatisfied .

This is one of the best Chinese restaurants I come here almost every weekend and the food deserves the 5 stars, all the staff are nice and the prices are decent. This is a clean restaurant and a restaurant I would recommend.

Best Chinese food I've had in San Antonio!!! Will definitely be back! Highly recommend the lemon chicken and hunan chicken. Service was excellent and restaurant was cozy and comfortable. Great place and even better customer service!!!

Texas people are insane to think this place is any good. The crab Rangoon was puny and barely had anything inside of it, and it was hard to even get a bite it was so tough. On top of that, it was soaked in shrimp sauce. The chicken was disgusting. The rice was bland and I had a mouth full of bullets with all those raw carrots. Me and my family ended up throwing it away what a bitter disappointment moving from Chicago to here.

Sorry but not the best place the food left an after taste after every bite, I only had a few until I trashed the remainder. Food was not freshly prepared the white rice was used for the fried rice with chunks or white still showing after cooking it all (the veggies had a weird film I believe this is what caused the after taste) the fried chicken wings also had sour taste to them, the over appearance did not meet my needs, sorry not sorry the food was horrible! Never again!!!

We love it here. Our little ones love their egg drop and sweet and sour soup. They serve you a really good portion that you will get to take some home. Never disappoints. Workers are all so nice and welcoming.

My wife had the Kung pao shrimp and beef which comes with white or fried rice and soup of choice and egg roll. She was satisfied with her food and it was more than enough to fill her tummy. Kids had the lemon chicken from the kids menu and I also ordered them egg drop soup which they LOVE from here. I myself had the house special fried noodles with chicken beef and shrimp. Our server let me know that it would come in a pretty big plate for like two ppl but I still got it and yuuuup, I couldn't finish it. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because my noodles got burnt a little and so the entire dish had a chard taste to it but even at that this plate was amazing fellas. We always come back to SG so on this evening we were left happy.

Favorite Chinese place. Large portions the lemon chicken comes with 2 chicken filets. This is the only place that does fried rice right. Great service every time

Honestly - let me start this review with being transparent - I am not the biggest fan of Americanized asian food but this is one of my boyfriends favorite places to eat so we come here from time to time. They have a decent lunch menu and we usually get the lemon chicken. Lunch specials come with white rice or fried rice, egg roll or Rangoon, and egg drop or hot/ sour soup. My boyfriend got the lemon chicken on our most recent visit with fried rice, Rangoon, & egg drop soup. I got the combination lo mien (includes shrimp, pork, & chicken) and I subbed the pork for beef - this only comes with a soup for the lunch special so I got an egg drop soup. If you come here and don't try anything at all - AT LEAST try their egg drop soup. It's some of the best egg drop I've ever had and they provide an abundance of crispy wonton skins to accompany the soup. Honestly the egg drop soup is also one of the reasons why I keep coming back. Now onto my lo mien - it was okay. I would give it a 2/5. I felt like the flavor was just not 100% there. The portion was a good size but again - I wasn't too much of a fan. The lemon chicken - I've had this dish before. It's probably one of the best dishes I've tasted from here. The lemon chicken portion is huge and I would recommend trying this dish if you come here. Overall food wise - I would give them 3 stars. The extra star earned on this review is due to service. The staff is extremely friendly and courteous. They come around frequently to make sure everything is okay & if you need anything else with your meal. It's very welcoming here. My last note would be - I don't know if this is recent or not, but there is like a 3.25% service charge on top of your bill at the end. It's announced at the front where you go to pay - but just FYI for anyone planning to check them out. Overall decent place to get some Asian American lunch specials. Check them out!

Great food!! The food portions are really big and filling! The staff is always super nice and helpful! When we don't want to go in and sit we order take out, which does not take long! The chicken lo main and the fried rice is amazing!

Consistently good quality food. Great lunch specials and great dinner specials too. Honestly, fur a quick, cheap, easy and good meal this place can't be beat. The service is always friendly and attentive and they've been around for many years. I foresee them being around for many many more years too. The Hunan Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork are listed on the small dinner specials for 6.99 (currently) and they're pretty much a lunch portion served at dinner time for only $1 more. Dude, you cant beat that. There's nothing GREAT or AMAZING about this place but it's good. Consistently good. Oh and the egg rolls, I can eat like three of them they're so good.

Ordered this as takeout during COVID so there was no dine in. Had the sesame beef, lemon chicken, and dumplings from here. Overall, everything was decent. The dumplings were more like potstickers, but were nonetheless good. The sauce that goes with them was also great. The sesame beef had a good flavor, but wasn't exactly crispy. The lemon chicken was good, cooked well, and had a good flavor. The rice includes large chunks of pork but was otherwise more in the bland side.

An average Chinese food spot. I can't complain. The service was the best part. The gentleman that served us was really friendly. I hope they keep him around and happy. He didn't miss a step. He came to check on us at the correct times. I am big on service and this young man was spot on. I wish I would have gotten his name. The food was good and served in large portions. The food came out in a timely manner. I had the general Tso chicken and it had some decent flavor and texture. I also had the crab rangoon and that was delicious. The environment is casual, quiet, and spacious. They have to space to house a very large party.​ I am still on the hunt for some amazing Chinese food in San Antonio.

Having grown up with several close friends from southern China, I got spoiled with really good Chinese food. I have hit a lot of spots here in SA over the past 6 months, and none of them have satisfied, until now. Great balanced flavors/ingredients, generous portions, and appropriate prices. This is now my go to establishment for Chinese Cuisine; think of this place next time you want something warm and delicious. Very friendly and attentive service.
