We were going out for pizza and beer on Friday, that much was certain. I was told we were going to Me and Ed's, which I was fine with. While some people are getting tired of going there, I still prefer it over most other pizza joints. But a friend had been hyping South of Shaw all week, a friend who isn't even from Fresno. I'm always down to try a new spot, so I was good with the idea. We're just down the street and head on over. There are 8 of us, but somehow we timed it just right as another group had just left and just took their spot over. We might have left otherwise, it was WAY too cold to eat outside. Quick look at the menu and the Hot Honey Chicken has my eye, as does the Pickle Pizza, and I'm crazy enough to do it. Everyone is kind of lingering, so I make the first move to the counter to order. The beers are a disappointment as far as I'm concerned, but the Flying Chankla Miche at least looks interesting. So I order the Flying Chankla. That's where I made a mistake. You see, the Flying Chankla is not the Flying Chankla Michel. I just thought it was understood. So when I see my beer, I'm like, wth?! Not one too complain about a free meal, I take it and go sit. My fellow beer fanatic got the porter, but I could tell he was more disappointed in the offerings than I was. I did end up going to Maroa Shell after I left and buying a 2-pack and a 4-pack for just over $40 cause I was really in the mood for a really good beer.
Back to the pizza, my Hot Honey Chicken was one of the first to come out, and everyone agreed it was very good. For me it was a tie between it and the Fig Jam & Prociutto that were my favorites. 2 guys each ended up ordering one to go for their wives. I'm not normally a fan of figs, there was just something about the texture of the bite that I really enjoyed. My least favorite pizza was easily the Bacon and Jalapeño. It's pretty well established that spicy and I don't get along, but I at least was willing to try it. The other one I tried was the Pineapple, and it was ok. Our friend did say the Lumberjack was good, but nobody at my end of the table ordered it. The guy next to me got the Pepperoni and Olives, but you can literally order that anywhere. Plus after 4 slices, I was full!
All in all, I would love to bring my family back. 3 pizzas between the 5 of us would be plenty, and I'm trying the Pickle Pizza when I return
