Best Restaurant Dishes Eater NY Editors Ate This Week, June 30, 2025 | Eater NY

"A Yunnan restaurant in Jersey City known for its classic Crossing the Bridge noodles; on a recent visit 'all of the four dishes we ordered were standouts: those noodles, a mapo squid ($16.99), beef on sticks (tiny, fun-to-eat spicy bites, $13.99), cucumber salad ($10.99), and my favorite, Yunnan chicken salad ($11.99).' The Yunnan chicken salad 'was a perfect spicy dish on a warm day, stocked with pulled chicken, scallions, pickled peppers, red onions, and a vinegary seasoning.' The only real drawback was the QR-code menu, which 'prompts you to set up an account and put in a credit card,' making group ordering awkward; otherwise the dining room is sleek, modern, and the experience efficient." - Nat Belkov

Very good restaurant! The food is delicious and fresh, especially Steamed Pot Chicken Soup, Yunnan Fried Stuffed Tofu, Shredded Potato with Egg Yolk, and Ham Potato Stewed Rice. The environment is nice and the service is good. The restaurant is next to the subway station. I strongly recommend this restaurant.

Absolutely loved the bold and authentic Yunnan flavors at South of the Clouds in Jersey City! We tried a variety of dishes like the Sichuan-Style Spicy Chicken, Lotus Fries, Black Truffle Fried Rice, and Crispy Fried Milk—each one was unique and full of flavor. Great spot for anyone looking to explore regional Chinese cuisine in a cozy, welcoming setting right near Grove Street.

Highlights for me: ✨Tofu Pudding Dry Mixed Rice Noodles $17.99 super flavorful, amazing slippery, gooey texture, I'm so inspired by this to use tofu pudding in meat sauces ✨Yunnan Fried Stuffed Tofu $13.99 maybe I just have a thing with tofu, but the texture contrast of fried tofu skin and soft tofu pudding was so good, the moment you bite in, the soft interior just bursts out with lovely soy flavor Others mentioned: ✨Yunnan crossing bridge noodle $22.99 ✨Dehong Dai roasted chicken $10.99 ✨Truffle fried rice $16.99 ✨Smoked pork jowl $17.99 @sotc_nyc ✨Fried milk $9.99 IG: joannekyc

The food here is very delicious, and for me this is very close to the one I had in China. The staff was very friendly with good service. The atmosphere is clean, modern and welcoming.

This place makes all of my noodle soup dreams come true. The mengzi beef rice noodles were delicious and the marinated cucumbers were the perfect refreshing accompaniment. The beef in the noodle soup was incredibly flavorful and tender, can't wait to try other soups here

Amazing experience at South of the Clouds! The food was incredibly flavorful, especially the rice noodles, which had the perfect balance of spice and richness. The ambiance was modern yet cozy, and the staff was friendly and attentive. Definitely a must-visit spot for authentic Yunnan cuisine in Jersey City!

Absolutely loved our dinner here! The Yunnan-style roast chicken was perfectly seasoned-crispy edges, juicy center, and paired beautifully with the tangy dipping sauce. The stir-fried greens were fresh and garlicky, cooked just right. Service was prompt and friendly, and the bamboo platter presentation added a charming touch. Cozy yet vibrant atmosphere—highly recommend for anyone craving bold, flavorful Chinese cuisine.

I got the chance to give this restaurant a try for dinner! When I arrived I parked on the street. I walked into a busy restaurant. I was sat and served by a nice young man! I ordered: Beef on sticks Braised chicken rice Steamed pot chicken soup Mengzi style special beef noodle soup premium Beef Yunban crossing bridge The food was pretty tasty. The braised chicken rice was my favorite. They soup wasn't bad, I just needed a little more salt. All in all I had a good experience!

Yelp
Got takeout from South of the clouds for lunch and it was like I dined in! I ordered soup and the soup came piping hot and double wrapped. Delivery was fast and easy. Even my husband who was skeptical about this being takeout said it was delicious. Well definitely need to dine in next time to give it a proper review.

Yelp
Overall: C // 3 stars This was my first time dining in after ordering a few times takeaway. I tried their Yunnan Crossing The Bridge both as takeaway and eat in and both of them have their pros and cons. For takeaway, the noodles absorb the soup almost immediately and triple in size. For dine in, the noodles are setup in a very hot pot of soup that does not cool down within an hour, but also does not soak up the soup. While the combination of bean curd, beef, and noodles is quite healthful and comforting, both of these options make the dish very difficult to eat. Yelp
Great to see SOTC expand into Jersey City. Compared to their NYU location, the space here is much bigger and a lot brighter and welcoming. Conveniently located just outside of the Grove St PATH station, it gets packed very quickly on a Saturday right at opening hours. It doesn't look like they take reservations, so it's best to come early. We ordered the following dishes: Yunnan Style Deep Fried Pork Ribs w Mint ($15) - A good appetizer dish to order. The pork ribs contains bone as a heads up. Dehong Dai Roast Chicken Thigh ($11) - Highly recommend. Love the flavor of this, which is perfectly roasted and the chicken meat is moist. Sour Cabbage Boiled Fish ($24) - This dish isn't really spicy, even though there's red peppers floating around. It's a solid dish to order if you're craving fish. Premium Beef Yunnan Crossing Bridge ($22) - I actually prefer this over their signature. Although less ingredients, it's a lot more flavorful thanks to the beef. Perfect for sharing on a nice cool/cold day. Bok Choy with Garlic Sauce ($14) - They don't really have a lot of available veggie options. As a matter of fact, this may be the only available veggie option, so we were stuck with this option. Good dish regardless. They also have this drink called Inai Soy Milk ($6), which I became addicted to. It's a uniquely sweet soy milk drink, similar to Yakult. I ended up ordering three of these (probably cheaper to buy a case at an Asian market). The service however, was very inconsistent. You're either having a hard time getting someone's attention to serve you or multiple people are coming to your table to serve you. If they can fix this issue, this spot will be thriving for years to come.

Yelp
Looking for a chic and delicious Yunnan inspired restaurant? * @sotc_nyc is your spot, they have a couple of locations we went to their Jersey City location. Their restaurant it beautiful, and super cozy. * The service is quick, you scan the menu and start to order what you want and the servers bring it to the table. If you have questions they are quick to help. * What we ate: Yunnan Style Lotus Fries - better than regular fries! Beef on the stick - tender with the perfect kick! Fried Shrimp Cakes - you already know we devoured these! Little Pot Rice Noodle - Traditional Yunnan-style copper pot, slow-simmered chicken broth for 4-8 hours with a mildly spicy flavor, served with minced pork, chives, and aged pickled vegetables for a tangy and appetizing taste. Crispy Fried Milk - it's so good just take out word for it and get it!! Dip it into the condensed milk and enjoy!! * Drinks: Tangerine Flavored Soda Passionfruit Tea W Cheese Milkfoam

Yelp
We went for dinner and the service, ambiance, and food were all excellent. We were seated at a large table with plenty of space for our party size. The service was attentive and helpful. The food was all delicious, the highlights for me were the tofu + crab roe, crispy fried eel, and the aorta.

Yelp
@foodie_starry Keeping it simple this Valentine's Day by revisiting the restaurant of our 4th date--a spot that made me fall for him all over again. Thankfully, South of the Clouds has opened right by our door in Jersey City, no need to trek to Manhattan! 313 Grove St, Jersey City, NJ 07302 Pu'er Spicy Beef Tripe ($14.99) - Easily the star of our meal. The tripe was tender, not chewy, and the slight heat from the seasoning was perfect, a unique dish that's apparently a NJ special! Signature Yunnan Crossing Bridge ($22.99) - The silky smooth rice noodles in savory chicken broth were divine, with a generous serving of meats and vegetables. Shredded Potatoes with Garlic Chive Flower Sauce ($15.99) - Crispy potatoes with a rare hint of garlic chive flowers, interesting but I still prefer them with a splash of vinegar. Spicy Boiled Fish ($23.99) - Soft fish with plenty of veggies, super satisfying though slightly oily. Black Truffle Fried Rice ($16.99) - Rich in truffle flavor, gets a bit heavy after a few bites. Yunnan Fresh Milk Rice Cream ($5.99) - Sticky and novel, a good bang for your buck. Egg Milk with Rice Wine and Peanut ($8.99) - A bit too sweet for my taste. Diverse menu, the rice noodles are particularly great for solo dining. The newly opened spot is spacious and bright, with contactless QR code ordering. Be prepared for a wait during weekday lunches--it's packed!

Yelp
We went not sure what to expect but really enjoyed it. We got the stir fried noodles with chicken and beef noodle soup. Both excellent and plenty of food for dinner. We'll gladly return!

Yelp
RIP Salt and Ginger. This place doesn't have unlimited yunan noodle refills, but $2 extra noodles is plenty. It is pretty busy near the opening, and we waited about 45 minutes. There toothpick meat is pretty good, but the portions are a little small. The appetizers are all spicy, like the ribs and even vegetables. Not sure why we ordered a chicken soup, but they have a lot of meat. Kind of bland for me, so I probably wouldn't order it again. I got the premium beef with noodles, but I didn't taste anything premium about it. I'd probably try a different meat next time.

Yelp
Great new addition to the Jersey City food scene - tasty food with lots of dessert options!

Yelp
Food: 3/5 the food portion is too small for the price I paid. The classic rice noodle on the menu is the most expensive choice among rice noodles. You pay for the soup (does taste like good soup with chicken bone as they declare on the menu) and the container which keeps your noddles warm while you are eating. That's the $6 premium you pay for this. Meats all come with small portion and probably only the beef taste ok. The other meats (chicken etc) are very dry, and probably more for decoration and show you what goes into the soup. We also tried the chicken leg as a separate dish which is ok. Service: 2/5 staff never checked how we were doing. We had to call the servers a few times because we don't have enough utensils, bowls and cups for the table... Ambience: 4/5 it's ok. Probably good for small parties or dating.

Yelp
For starters service is non existent. Order in your phone and food is dropped off. Food is NOT FRESH. Order is as follows: Appetizer: Crispy Fried Pork Main: Dai Style Stir Fried Beef Boiled Beef w/ Mint Rice Rice Soup Dessert: Crispy Fried Milk Roll Within 3 minutes of ordering on MY phone. No Server interaction up until this point the following arrived: Crispy Fried Pork (Cold) Crispy Fried Milk Roll (Cold, undercooked) Dai Style Stir Fried Beef Approximately another 3-5 minutes later, the soup arrived. This one was hot. Obviously the first 3 were not fresh. The fried app/dessert are pre-fried, and warmed. The main dish microwaved. The soup is made to order likely because you just add the ingredients to the boiling broth. On to service. Non existent. We kept trying to get the attention of any of the servers to get a to go box and pay. Took at least 5-7 minutes in which they passed us several times. It was not very busy. We witnessed our server bussing a table two tables down (wearing black gloves). Then went to the back and ran another tables food. Same gloves, and back to bussing. What?!?! Totally gross. Lastly throughout our entire meal, there was a guy sitting right next to us talking to his friends table (these are all 2 tops), he was not actually dining with them just happened to join them to chat. FOR THE ENTIRE MEAL. He was vaping the entire time. The staff did not address this. Ugh. We were very excited about this location but this is a first time last time situation. They should've made it a to-go restaurant. Seems they can't really manage a dine in location, and have not trained their staff properly either. But they definitely expect to be tipped as so SMH

Yelp
I like the food here but I should warn people that mildly spicy means very spicy. I have a high tolerance but my partner was burning up. Service was good, with nice and polite severs. I will eat there again to try the rest of the menu

Yelp
The food is authentic and fresh. Big plus that they're kid friendly and great for large groups.

Yelp
Food was pretty authentic there and decent price! We ordered the original Guo Qiang Mi Xian. Definitely comfort food after a weekend of drinking.

Yelp
Great taste and fresh, nice dining experience. Enjoyed every dish. Bit of a wait for a table, but not too bad.
