What to Know About the ‘South Park’ Creators’ Casa Bonita Reopening - Eater

"On South Park this past season, its 26th, a March episode featured two fourth graders, Cartman and Kenny, buying and remodeling a hot dog stand Cartman and his mother had been living in, based on the actual Coney Island Boardwalk in Bailey, Colorado, which Stone and Parker considered buying last summer." - Rachel P. ‘South Park’ Creators’ Casa Bonita Revamp Has Hit Some Hurdles | Eater

"A nostalgic, throwback roadside attraction centered on a hot-dog-shaped stand, this Bailey landmark gained wider fame after a prominent feature on South Park and was listed for sale in the spring with a roughly $1.5 million asking price. Its cartoonish charm makes it a beloved Colorado oddity and prompted public speculation — and encouragement from musicians and fans — that the South Park creators might buy and relocate it as a novelty. While the idea excited locals and celebrities, those owners later said they couldn’t realistically take on another costly, run-down restaurant project at the moment." - Rachel P. Kreiter

Where To Eat and Drink in the Mountains This Ski Season - Eater Denver

"The Coney Island Hot Dog Stand has been around in some form since the 1960s. Located near Bailey on Highway 285, the hot dog-shaped diner has both indoor and outdoor seating. Three years ago, it was gutted, renovated, and reintroduced to the public with a totally revamped menu that includes locally-sourced gourmet dogs and brats from Continental Sausage, Elevation Ketchup, and Rocky Mountain Soda." - Rebecca Treon

This was a fun stop. We ordered a kids hot dog and a hatch chile & cheese sausage. The food was fine (I liked the sausage) but definitely overpriced for what it was. There's also an ice cream window on the side. We ordered a milkshake which was pretty good. Overall I wouldn't come for the food but it was worth checking out.

Google
It's a hot dog stand. A kitschy one with a little bit of history, but other than that, it doesn't really separate itself from other hot dog places. Our orders were good, but I've had better hot dogs. Sitting at an outdoor table by a rushing stream would be hard to beat, though. Would I go again? Maybe. Do I recommend making it a stop? I already have to friends. It's worth a visit.

Google
Overall a fantastic experience. The employees were so nice and the food was delicious. There are plenty of picnic tables to choose from and after you eat you can treat yourself to some ice cream or shake while you enjoying nature and the river. There is also the opportunity to checkout and buy local art work! So much going on in one little place.

Google
Listen if you’re here looking for the best hot dog for the cheapest price you’re in the wrong place. If you’re looking for a place that has a great hot dog, for reasonable price, and to go to a place that lets be real is a peice of Colorado history you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been coming here for over 20 years and yeah it’s a little of a gimmick but I love it. The food is really good, staff is awesome and it’s a great place to stop and break up the traffic coming home from the mountains.

For many years, I have seen South Park Coney Island from the highway as we went past, always wondering about it. This time, I stopped with my 9 year old, and it was quite delightful. The food and location were good, but it was the customer service provided by the two young men that is worth writing about this morning. Despite being young, probably late teens, they were kind, described what they were offering, and friendly. Any business would be happy with these two as their customer forward face. Nicely done.

Google
I rode my motorcycle out here to try the hot dogs, as I've heard good things. The hype is real! The hot dogs were phenomenal, the kid working was friendly and helpful and the fact you can sit by a river surrounded by big beautiful trees to enjoy your dog was an added bonus. The gift shop was excellent and sold home made fudge which I've been in search of and was happy to find some here. Just about an hour from Denver it's a perfect destination for a motorcycle ride.

A true roadside gem! The Coney Island Hot Dog Stand is as iconic as it gets—shaped like a giant hot dog bun and nestled right alongside the river in Bailey. It's a must-stop spot whether you're passing through or planning a fun detour from Denver. The vibe is lighthearted and nostalgic, with picnic tables by the water and a quirky, old-school charm that’s hard to find these days. The hot dogs? It’s classic comfort food that hits the spot. Perfect for families, day-trippers, or anyone looking for a fun photo op and a bite by the river. Don't miss it!

Google
Cool little roadside attraction with some good food and great views, definitely worth checking out if you are a fan of the show south park.

Yelp
We swung by South Park Coney Island on a weekend drive through Bailey and couldn't have asked for a better roadside lunch. First off--how do you not stop at a giant hot dog?! The food hit the spot-- Everything was made fresh! But what really stood out was the staff. Super friendly, fast, and genuinely happy to be there. You can tell they take pride in the place and care about making it a good experience for everyone who walks up. Can't recommend this place enough if you're passing through or just want a fun, low-key lunch with great vibes. Definitely coming back!

Yelp
Just what you'd expect on coney island Decent size, tasty dog in a super soft bun Toppings of your choice I'm traditional red chili (they have choices) My son in law had traditional sauerkraut and spicy mustard Be sure to ask about the history and the relation to the show "South Park " You will not be disappointed

Yelp
My husband has been dying to go here for years - we pass it multiple times a year on trips to Crested Butte and Salida, but made our first stop in today. I got a kids dog with red chili and onions and he got the special - a cheese and green chili brat. He was under the impression he was ordering a hot dog that would have green chili and nacho cheese on top of it, not a bratwurst with these things inside of it. Takeaways was that it was pretty average and just okay and deserves 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Fun spot to stop at just to say that you've been. However, it's pretty overpriced at $7.50 for a small, regular hotdog. The line wasn't bad when we went on a rainy afternoon, but I've heard that there can sometimes be a long wait. Either way, it's worth it just to come here for the experience!
google avatar

Trish L.

Yelp
Staff were quick and friendly, there's plenty of seating outside with umbrellas and shade from the trees. The hatch chile and cheese dog was delicious!! The casing had a nice snap when you hit into it and the flavor was delicious! I was surprised by the quality of the bun. I think $12 is definitely the most I've ever spent on a hot dog, but it was worth the experience.

Yelp
This place was super hyped up to us - people had said that they drive all the way down from Denver just for these hot dogs. I wasn't impressed. There was a long line to get our hot dogs, so part of this may be due to a slight rush. When I went up to order, they were out of 3 types of hot dogs so I got the 1/4 frank. I ended up adding chili and cheese and they gave me a lot of toppings, so well worth the $1.50 to add the toppings. My friend behind me ordered the jackalope dog and was given a brat. She pointed it out to the worker who offered no solution. Overall, would say that these hot dogs were overpriced and overhyped but tasted decent. I don't think that I will be coming back - it was an underwhelming experience.

Yelp
Some places just have too much nostalgia associated with them and thus they get hyped up for no reason even though the food is just plain bad. I believe South Park Coney Island is a classic case of that. Here's my take on the experience: Quality of food: mediocre. There was absolutely nothing special about the hot dog that I had here. Décor: The building is neat since, as you probably know, it's shaped like a hot dog. The paint is peeing off and there are no bathrooms. Inside is boring and very depressing. Cleanliness: mediocre. I never saw anyone clean the outside tables. I think the customers were being nice and helping keep the tables clean. Service: meh. There were two teenagers working the day we went and they both looked bored out of their minds and couldn't wait to get outta there. Price: atrocious. Just my one hot dog was around $14. YES FOURTEEN DOLLARS!! No fries No sides. If $14 for a single hot dog from a place that's middle of nowhere is not a classic case of daytime robbery then I don't know what is. Please do yourself a favor and ignore the "cuteness" factor. Sure, stop outside, take a photo, and then run! Maybe folks come here just for nostalgia and end up giving it a high rating. SKIP THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS.

Yelp
What's better than getting a hot dog to eat inside a gigantic hot dog? I mean, come on peeps, how cool is this. Coney Island is a unique and quirky must visit when driving I285.

Scott P.

Yelp
Wow. Just not very good. Stale buns, gristly dogs, and wow do you ever pay for it. Once was enough
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
It saddens me to see it up for sale again. This is only the second or third time I've been here because it always seems to be closed. The hot dogs were good and everyone was friendly. They even have hot dogs for dogs so even my shadow got one. There was seating even though the line went out the door. There was some kind of artist market and I picked up a stained glass parrot. Four stars because they don't serve fries anymore
google avatar

Yelp
What a fun little place to stop. All the dogs are unique. My husband LOVED the Jackalope (Jack rabbit, antelope, habenero, cherries). Our server loved his job and all the options. It was fun to be there just to see the server so excited and serious about all the options. Pricey, yes. But worth the experience just once to try a Jackalope hotdog.

Yelp
Where else can you get a good Coney Island hot dog in the mountains? NOWHERE! What a fun stop! Folks it's nothing fancy unless you fancy a wiener in the woods as much as I do. Some folks may bitch about the price but one is paying for the EXPERIENCE plus a damn good dog. Go to QT if that's not your thing. More for those who appreciate it. I ate mine with ketchup mustard and onions and enjoyed every bit of the snap, char and bun. All was meaty and fresh. Staff were friendly and cool. There's an ice cream counter on the side if you really wanna super indulge. Gift shop was quirky. Great stop while on an adventure! Go!

Yelp
Having passed the Coney Island Boardwalk what seems like a million times, I finally stopped and quenched my post-hike appetite with a coney. ++ The building is shaped like a giant coney. How fun is that?! ++ Lots of creative options to try here! We chose El Squatcho (bacon wrapped dog, pinto beans, pico de gallo, green chili, jalapenos, and shredded cheese) and Yeti Dog (bacon wrapped, shredded cheese, onion, and bbq sauce). Love the different take on the classic coney. ++ There's a ton of outdoor seating available. Just be wary of the rather aggressive bees that seem to be hanging around. We opted to move down to a picnic table by Roark Creek to escape the majority of the bees, which worked well. ++ Staff is friendly, and the wait time is quite minimal. Definitely glad to have finally made the stop to check out Coney Island Boardwalk. While it's rare that I crave a coney, but these will be at the top of my list next time I do.

Yelp
Cool place considering it's a gigantic hotdog stand. Service was 50/50 - cashier was warm and friendly, girl who took our order wasn't. Really over priced for hot dogs.. it's cool to visit at least once, but I wouldn't return. I'm also not a big fan of hotdogs. 3 stars is a decent review, I think they're a bit below that though. Lots of cute squirrels in outside area.

Yelp
Stopped at this place with family back in 2017, because I saw this place on the Food Network, so I wanted to check it out while in the area. Had a good chili dog at a reasonable price. The rest of the family enjoyed their dogs as well. Cool area to eat outside, on picnic tables by a rushing river. We're going to be back in that area again in a month and I thought about stopping back again. So I checked online to see if they are still open. I'm glad I did! Holy balls, are they expensive now! A chili dog is $12.00, $9.75 for a plain hot dog! Like a lot of other reviewers stated, the food is nothing special. It was just cool going there the first time to a giant hotdog that was featured on a TV show. No hotdog is worth that much money. Take a family of 5 there and it would cost almost $100 for hotdogs, pop and potato chips. Apparently there are new owners. Maybe they should try lowering the prices and doing more sales VOLUME?!
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
Definitely not worth stopping! They food was overpriced. The decor needed painting/cleaning/upgrading.They did not have accessible bathrooms
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced. Very boring/basic toppings (jalapeño, onion, cheese, sauerkraut). An elk dog cost $17. A kids hot dog is $10. Total rip off in my opinion
google avatar

Jk N.

Yelp
Waited in line for about 25 minutes for a hot dog. when I got up to order, they were out of cooked hot dogs. That's ok. I just didn't expect the lady to roll her eyes and mutter at me. I'm the paying guest, remember? Too bad.
google avatar

Cecilia H.

Yelp
We stopped on a drive through the mountains and are happy we did. One person got the hatch green chile and two tried the elk cheddar - the brats were really good! My bun was a bit dry like it had been out of the bag for too long though. We sat at a picnic table by river and absolutely loved that! It was really nice and a peaceful way to spend lunch.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Seems like they have lowered prices somewhat compared to what previous reviews were citing. Elk dogs are $15 now and regular hot dogs are $7.50. Hopefully this means they took the hint from previous reviews and dropped the prices to be a little more reasonable. Elk dog was spectacular, but $15 might still be pushing it a little... The building, outdoor seating and other elements of the surroundings were still pretty nice, but the wear and tear of the years is showing. The chipmunks were still running around, but it looks like the old water wheel is no longer working. This place could be a gem with a serious update. But with COVID lockdown democrats running Colorado these days, I'm guessing the "For Sale" sign we saw in the window isn't going to attract many takers. Maybe if some of these people move back to California, then Colorado could have nice things again.

Yelp
Great fast food place in the mountains. They are just west of Bailey on the left side when driving west on U.S. 287. Coney Island used to be in Aspen Park east of here. They have a limited offering hot dogs, nachos, chips and soft drinks. Staff was very pleasant to talk with. I got a polish dog with green chili with pickle relish and jalapenos. I also got a 1/4 lb frank with red chili with more jalapenos, onions and mustard. The buns were plain, the meat was hot and condiments were cool. I sat inside at one of the two round tables on the side of the hot dog bun. Nice and cozy. There are 4 stools looking out. They also have picnic tables down by the South Platte river. There is another area next door with more picnic tables and a surprise! They have an ice cream station serving Liks Ice Cream from Denver. So I got 2 dips of Graham Cracker in a sugar cone. Restrooms are in next door bldg that has an art gallery & sweets for sale.

Yelp
This place is great ! Had some dogs and it was fun! I'll be back ! I got the nacho cheese dog with jalepenos ! Yum !

Mike B.

Yelp
Stopped for a Brat, small bag of chips chips and drink. $19.50 including tip. Thats right, almost $20.00. The meal should have been $8.50. The place could be a real Gem but its not and its way overpriced. No fries like in the past. The river is nice though. Save your money and go to Shaggy Sheep just down the road.

Caitlin C.

Yelp
Had to bring my wiener dog to get a free day old wiener, which he happily gobbled up. I enjoyed my meal as well! Just wish they had ice cream!

Greg A.

Yelp
New management so the building, grounds and menu are much improved. Prices are reasonable. Service was friendly.

Cassie G.

Yelp
Hot dogs were decent. Beware that they close down the ice cream 1 hour before closing. We arrived at 4:05 and they closed at 5 and wouldn't serve us root beer floats

Ahndrea G.

Yelp
Great place! Super yummy hotdogs! Several options! Super nice staff!! Highly recommend as a quick lunch stop on a road trip.

Yelp
The thrill is gone! My husband and I eagerly stopped in with our kids after having passed this place many times on our trips between BV and Denver. It's been closed for months but was finally open. We checked the online menu beforehand, and had our hearts set on the mac & cheese dog with fries. Our kids were ready for some of the other original-sounding options. Sadly, none of the dogs on the online menu are offered any more. Now the menu is all a la carte, and the selection of toppings is nothing special. What was special however was the price. We paid $20 each for two elk and cheddar dogs with canned green chilis and "nacho cheese" (aka melted queso from a jar). If you're charging $20 for a dog, it had better be INSPIRED. These are not. Nor is the selection of sides. When the manager told us fries weren't on the menu because the fryer "wasn't open yet," we asked about chips instead, and were offered only small bags of regular Lay's. Our kids were smarter than us and didn't even bother ordering. The place was practically empty at 4 pm on a beautiful Saturday when the town of Bailey was holding a festival. We should have taken the hint. The website makes this place seem like a real gem, but my guess is that it's under new management who show no love for their food or the potential charm of the place. Next time, we'll skip it.
google avatar

Dee W.

Yelp
One of my favorite local places to pop in! Really appreciate the love and effort the new owners put into keeping this landmark place alive! It is a bit on the pricier side but I jokingly call this the 'convenience tax'...someone else went down the hill and fought the city to bring me delicious treats way out here in Bailey! Come for the food and leave knowing you're supporting a local family who it putting their heart and soul into something awesome!
google avatar

Robert A.

Yelp
Super filling and worth every penny.i loved the staff and atmosphere by the river.this wasn't on the menu yet to my knowledge,it was right up my alley tho.super bomb highly suggest this place in general.

Rick S.

Yelp
So, I know hot dogs, and no one, and I mean NO ONE puts ketchup on a hot dog where I come from! That being said, they do a good job of getting the order in and the food out! I would like to see a legit Chicago Style hot dog on the menu- 100% Vienna Beef- poppy seed bun with mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, celery salt, Tomato, and a pickle! Make THAT a menu item and you get the 5th star! Service is fast, and eating a hot dog out of a building that looks like a hot dog AND was on South Park? Win win!

Todd C.

Yelp
I really want to like this place. There's a new group managing it this summer and they're better than last, but it still not very good. Often the dogs are over cooked. They're very expensive - when they have poppyseed buns they are good the regular buns fall apart before you can get through them. No french fries or ice cream at a hotdog place catering to tourists is kind of silly. As a local, I so hope they find a buyer who knows how to run a real hotdog joint (it has been for sale for years)
