The Best Philly Grocery Stores For Shopping Local | Eater Philly

"A pillar of the South Philly community, the South Philly Food Co-op is dedicated to selling local brands and products in its store, so much so that it has an entire e-zine on its website that shows off the shop’s local lineup." - Dayna Evans

Google
Wonderful shop and more and more my go-to for everyday items. They manage to pack a ton of things into that little place and I can get almost everything that I need. Prices are fair and they have sales often. Everyone working there is friendly and helpful. Totally worth joining as a member - its a lifetime membership!

This is my new place for organic and hard to find foods. The community Food Coop provides owner discounts and owners become part of the community board and choose who gets to get elected to certain positions. Events and Workshops held throughout the year & Im a Face Painter that volunteers my services here.

This is the best Food Co Op in Philly!! I strongly suggest supporting them. It’s clean and well stocked and has stuff you can’t find anywhere else.

This is a hidden gem. Everything is organic and locally made. Spotless, clean, and food options you can't find easily in this area.

My first time at the Philly Food Co-op and they have just about everything a grocery store has with the focus on sustainable items. I picked up some goat cheese and some chicken and a delicious white chocolate walnut butter. Mario, the cashier who checked us out was really nice. Looking forward to a return trip.

This market is the only grocery store that brings me joy shopping in it. The deals they have often make it affordable, and I love keeping my money in my community instead of chain stores. The staff here is so kind and my whole family loves Rose!

Great selection of organic produce and local products. Prices are a bit higher, but the quality is unbeatable.

Small but impressive selection—lots of local goods, and vegan/organic selections. EXPENSIVE! Just saying. More of a “treat yourself” market, rather than every day. Regardless, it’s really nice and they have really cool, unique stuff.

Yelp
Every time I visit there are new items available. Locally sourced items available. Organic Plant Based Kombucha Herbs Grains and nuts Such a variety, well stocked and nice presentation. Don't sleep on this establishment. I will be coming more frequently.

Yelp
If you've been feeling cooped up and need an excuse to take a walk, Philly's hottest new grocery store is the South Philly Food Coop! It has everything- artisanal peanut butter, plants, an ethnic food aisle that includes Italian food, frozen oreo ice cream sandwiches (and lots of other delicious looking frozen things), a swag shelf with cute totes, shirts and tea towels, local bread, local meat, craft beef jerky, vegan cheese, and all the nut milks! Ok so it doesn't actually have everything, it is pretty small, but it is surprisingly well stocked and there are a lot of interesting brands and foods, especially in the international aisle. Everything seems to be $1-2 more than you would expect, but you're paying to support a community venture and take money away from Amazon and put it into your neighborhood! Membership is $300 and can be paid in installments over a year. Membership doesn't require volunteering but it does get you discounts at a bunch of local places, access to special member sales and discounts, and you'll have a say in the governance of the coop. You don't have to be a member to shop here though! Right now for COVID there is hand sanitizer upon entry, plexi glass in front of the cash register, signs for walking in a certain direction, and everyone is masked. There are definitely less people coming in here than Acme so I feel safer coming here. Support your community and shop local!

Yelp
Right as you walk into South Philly Food Co-op, you'll feel right at home. The floor plan is really nice for a grocery store. As you walk in, you'll fresh produce to your left and the wonderful workers to your right. There are only 2 cashiers. You walk further down and encounter the snacks, dairy, cheese, and meats. Then bread and frozen food, and all essentials are right there. It's a small place but has everything you need. They even have pre-made meals made by local cooks! The importance of locally made and sourced food is really great. Moreso, the aisles are always clean and the store is never too busy. I'm always in and out in 10 minutes, compared to bigger grocery stores where I have to walk a half mile just to get from one aisle to the next. Whether you are coming to plan a meal, grab some fresh produce, or getting a pre-made meal, SPFC is an excellent addition to the neighborhood.

Yelp
The Co-op has great produce, but the rest of the products aren't very appealing. They aren't well known brands, which is part of their shtick, but everything I have tried has been disappointing. Be careful. The vegan cheese is kept close to the real cheese, which is annoying, because it's way to mix them up, and most people don't think they are interchangeable. The produce is priced well, but everything else is way more expensive than Giant or Acme. And it's not priced as well as the Italian market, which also has a lot of organic food, so there is really no advantage to the co-op Overall, this place is near my house, but other than that, I wouldn't bother.

Yelp
I love this place! So convenient and has everything I need without being overwhelmed by too many options. I would give it 5 stars except that I've often felt rushed through checkout and the staff sometimes has an attitude.

Yelp
Great selection and fair prices. Helpful staff will answer any questions you have. Truly a welcome gem in the neighborhood!
