Popped into South Pointe Tavern towards the end of happy hour on Friday evening. Ordered the Miami State of Mind cocktail and also tried a few sips of the Lav In The Air cocktail.
Quality
Since we were in the area, decided to check out South Pointe Tavern. Both my girlfriend and I decided to order a speciality cocktail. I went with the Miami State Of Mind, which I absolutely loved. Made with silver tequila, fresh pressed watermelon, cilantro, jalapeno, fresh lime, agave, and cracked black pepper, it was excellent. With so many bold flavors and tastes, they somehow managed to craft a fabulous cocktail without it falling in the wrong direction. The fruit flavors shined, and the drink perfectly combined sweetness and heat. My girlfriend ordered Lav In The Air, which I immediately knew I would not like. With gin, lavender, basil, pimms blackberry and elderflower, and lemon soda, to me it tasted like a fruity air freshener. I just don't understand lavender in drinks, but my girlfriend seemed to enjoy it. Regardless of that, the Miami State Of Mind is something I could easily sip on all day.
Quantity
The bar is unique as I would not exactly classify it as a cocktail bar, but they clearly put a lot of effort into each drink. Both of our selections were a good size and had solid pours of liquor, but to a degree where it was present yet not overwhelming in the drink.
Value
All of the signature cocktails they had on the drinks menu were $13. During happy hour, which runs from 5-7pm on weekdays, those drinks are half off. It is a solid deal.
Ambiance
South Pointe Tavern is located in the SOFI area, near the very bottom of Miami Beach. Found on the corner of a massive apartment and business complex, South Pointe Tavern has a small outdoor patio area and then a small inside bar. The patio area has several chairs and tables spread along a covered walkway. When we arrived it was almost exclusively taken up by smokers, so it was not very appealing. Inside the first thing you see is the absolutely gorgeous wrap around bar. Styled with wood and enhanced with hanging racks of glasses, it is very cool, especially as the lights dim and it almost seems to glow. There are about twelve stools around the bar, then a few high tops along the window. The inside area has a few televisions set up, but for whatever reason they were all playing Miami Beach tourist videos during our visit. In the background they had a mix of alternative rock and hard rock music playing.
Crowd
The bar was very busy when we arrived and we took the last two seats at the bar. The place was full of what seemed to be locals and regulars. The bartender seemed to know every single person who walked in and the patrons seemed to know each other too. It was mostly a middle-aged crowd and many people looked like they had been hanging out at the bar for a while already.
Service
I thought the bartender was wonderful. She was very talkative, friendly with everyone who walked in the door, and mixed up drinks expertly.
Parking
Some limited street parking can be found in the area, but expect to fight with tourists visiting the beach or South Pointe Park. A little north is a public lot, which is probably the best option.
Extra
I did not spend a lot of time at South Pointe Tavern, but I enjoyed my limited visit. The bar is beautiful, the bartender was great, and my drink was awesome. Throw in solid happy hour deals and it is a place worth visiting. I am definitely interested to come back and try out some of the food and possibly brunch.
