12 Killer Breakfast Sandwiches To Swap for Brunch | Eater Denver

"A favorite among the Boulder community, Walnut Cafe stacks this breakfast sandwich to the brim with protein — two eggs, sausage or bacon, and cheese served on toasted rosemary olive oil bread with a side dish. The restaurant also offers gluten-free bread as an alternative." - Nisa Sedaghat

I’ve lived in Boulder for almost the last 10 years and absolutely love this place. Really tasty nonalcoholic drinks. Their lattes and coffee drinks are incredible. They do also have a list of alcoholic drinks. The food is super good absolutely love the breakfast potatoes. i’ve had the duzer-rito, french toast, pancakes, tempeh breakfast scramble dish, classic eggs bfast dish and all are amazing! the vibe is always great and the staff are always super fun and attentive

Google
A lovely community breakfast joint with great food, a cozy atmosphere, and super friendly staff. There's tons of vegetarian options that are easy to make vegan. Packed on the weekends but you can easily get a table on weekdays. They also have tons of shady outdoor seating. New favorite breakfast spot in Boulder!

Google
Great local breakfast restaurant with a huge choice of dishes for you to enjoy. Vibe was very friendly and it was good to spend some time in the welcoming and positive atmosphere. Food was a bit too overdone for my taste hence the loss of 1 star.

Google
Great atmosphere, near non-existent service, and poorly prepared food. It’s been the same for years. It is astounding how bad the most basic items taste. So yourself a favor. Get a club or fast w/water. There are only a handful of dishes that will not make you regret your purchase. My kid chooses not eating when this is an option. Regrettable it’s the only breakfast option in South Boulder. It would have to close if anything else opened there. The customers have nothing else from which to choose. A great place to be ignored by the friendly staff. A miraculous event if you see them more than once. NO ONE will turn and face you if seated at the bar. Just go pay at the door if you’d like to leave in a timely manner.

Google
Great breakfast spot 😊 it was pretty chilly the day we ate here, but we sat outside because of our dog and the heaters kept us comfortable. The staff was wonderful and the food was very tasty!

Google
We're big fans of the original Walnut Café, so today we finally checked out South Side Walnut Café—and loved it! Same great menu, but the space feels a bit cleaner and brighter while still keeping the fun, quirky charm. It was packed on a Sunday at 10am, but our party of 4 was seated in about 20 mins. Food and espresso drinks took a little while (they were totally slammed), but everything came out hot, fresh, and totally worth the wait. The staff was clearly hustling and working like a well-oiled machine. We'll definitely be coming back!

Brunch isn't my favorite (blasphemy, I know), so I'm always excited when I find a place I really like. My husband and I shared: - Bhakati Chai - Spikey's Golden Milk - Pesto Quesadilla - Big Dipper with Strawberry Banana and Icing - Housemade Sweet Roll - Banana Jubilee Starting with the drinks, the Bhakati Chai was amazing. I hate when chai is all sugar and no spice and this one has a lot of spice. Between the entrees, I think the Big Dipper was my favorite which is surprising because I don't usually go for a sweet breakfast. The combination of pancake and French toast was unique and delicious. I love that they encourage customization because I wanted to combine the options on the menu. The pesto quesadilla was also fantastic though, so just get both. The sweet roll was good, but I prefer my cinnamon rolls to be gooier. The Banana Jubilee was delicious, but it was sadly a special that day, so I'm not sure when it will be on the menu again. It was so busy when we got there that I was surprised we only had a 15 minute wait (around 9:30 on a Saturday). I'd definitely go back again!

Google
My friend and I had a great experience here! The service was great and everyone was so patient with us which was awesome because I had a lot of trouble deciding what I wanted to eat. The food was all pretty good but nothing stellar so that’s why only 4 stars. I was pretty disappointed with the biscuit because it wasn’t standard or as buttery as I expected. It by no means was bad, it just wasn’t what I expected or would be used to. We both got the BHAKTI CHAI which was absolutely delicious and I’d definitely recommend. Might even go there just for it! I would definitely recommend South Side Walnut to others looking for a chill good brunch spot. Also decent pricing.

Yelp
Well I never thought I'd love anything more than the mid town Walnut but the Walnut South has become our favorite breakfast spot - Our dog is welcomed right along with us, spacious outdoor seating, walking around the side to see the Flatirons! The servers are delightful, helping with orders, never laughing when you decide you want pancakes AND the cornbread for sides. Food comes out quickly, just as ordered, hot and the coffee keeps coming. We love that patio!

Yelp
A friend recommended this as her favorite place I would not go that far but it was good. Nothing was really exceptional except service. Potatoes were overseasoned and not crisp. Eggs good- blueberry cornbread huge - coffee fine. There was outdoor seating which was helpful - Inside diner style.

Yelp
This is really 4 and 1/2 Stars. Service was excellent. FYI - I noticed some reviewers on here saying the servers weren't smiley or friendly - really??? That's like a big deal for you? - I guess you don't consider what kind of job this is and how much they are paid - get over yourselves and your touchy feelings - the Food came out fast and hot. That's the main thing. You get a lot. Biscuit is outrageously large. Had to take it home - couldn't finish it. Belgian waffle was very lite which was good. Coffees were hot and done well - strong which is excellent. The 1/2 star. It's a bit loud mostly because of the them/they/their couple next to us shout-talking (I just made that term up!) - and the acoustics. Otherwise a very nice place for breakfast.

Yelp
Food is great. Service is too. Ambience okay for a breakfast/lunch place. ......,.,,,.,,........

Yelp
South Side Walnut Cafe is great spot if looking for breakfast/lunch or brunch spot in Boulder, CO. It was also close to out BnB for race weekend. Really good that had come back for seconds and try more of the menu. The first visit got green burrito. I loved it! It nice size burrito, hearty, filling, and green salsa on top was da bomb. Refried beans delicious. Ashley ordered coffee cake. It looked really good so had try taste. It hit the spot. My first impressions walked in the place got personality. The rolling garage doors (they had it down), huge chalkboard hanging on top of one wall with all daily specials, walk-in one of the barista artist she some on display and buy them if want, or vibrant color interior colors. Cool laidback vibe. Second visit got the Santa Fe Chicken Wrap. Again nice hearty dish. The wrap was huge and loaded with good stuff. Awesome. Service five stars both times. Our servers were attentive, friendly, and all smiles.

Yelp
This place is very popular for breakfast/brunch but we were able to get seating at 9am on a Tuesday without a wait. The food is good--I had the Mexican omelette, which had good flavor but little heat It would have been better in my opinion with rice and beans, but I got potatoes (pretty decent) and fruit salad (better than average for this time of year) as my sides. Our server was efficient enough but not exactly on the friendly side. Overall a good stop if you're in this part of Boulder but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Yelp
We tried the original Walnit cafe a few times but were unimpressed with the high prices and loud environment. So we stopped going there. We wanted to try the South side location because we are looking for a good breakfast restaurant in that area and see if it was any better. Sad to say, we were underwhelmed again at this location. High priced coffee, and soggy bacon when we specifically asked for crispy. Still loud in there and we wont be back.

Yelp
I've been coming here for close to twenty years, and the place has declined with the plaza. We waited in a nearly empty restaurant and nearly twenty minutes for two bowls of oatmeal. The oatmeal then sat in the window for five minutes cooling before any of the staff decided to bring it to the table. They even got the order wrong

Yelp
So many vegan options, great coffee menu and tons of options for espresso drinks, big patio where cocktails are available. SKO BUFFS

Yelp
Great modern location. Good food and very comfortable setting. They have pie day every Tuesday, which would be delicious. Homemade Price 314 slice unbelievable. Only suggestion I have is to have Wi-Fi.

Mia P.

Yelp
Really tasty food, this location has a nice outdoor patio too with lots of shade which was nice for the sunny day we went. Servers were really friendly, this is my new favorite brunch spot in Boulder.

Yelp
If you are a single person, word of advice... Don't sit at the bar. The barista isn't interested in any one there for food and she will blatantly ignore you if you are female. After asking to order she sharply told me she was the barista. The server was standing around, after about 10 minutes with out a drink or even being noticed, I asked the server if I could order. However after I finally ordered I got my check with in 5 minutes.... Still a plate of food. The food was good ... So the kitchen staff is obviously doing better. I felt like a bother to the floor staff.

Yelp
Went to this cafe on a Sunday around 11. Very busy and had to wait a bit to get a table but wasn't too bad. We ordered drinks and my hot chocolate took a good while to come out. Loved the whipped cream, but overall thought the chocolate flavor was strange not sure why. We also tried the Cambric forgot to get a picture, but that was awesome! Super foamy on top and was really impressive and surpassed expectations. It took a while to get our food and we were waiting for a good bit. I understand that it was busy but also since it's just diner food I was expecting a faster roll out. We had the dill eggs with a side of blueberry cornbread and special huevos rancheros with a side of French toast. The dill eggs were good but the portion was kinda small and I think to fill up the plate better they should offer two sides with this. I liked it overall, but thought the pairing with the Swiss cheese was kind of weird. They didn't go skimpy on it though and the eggs were cooked perfectly. I think goat cheese or feta cheese would go better with this. Spinach was good and I liked the dill sauce which is just sour cream with dill. The blueberry cornbread is also good. Not as crumbly and cornmeal like as I am used to and I'm pretty sure it doesn't come out of box mix, but it's definitely not the best cornbread I've ever had. The special huevos rancheros was good. The pita bread underneath didn't feel like actual pita bread and was kind of flat but it was covered in so much it didn't matter. I thought the flavor combination of Mexican flavors like green chiles and beans was odd with the feta cheese and Greek inspired ness of the dish. It was a big and filling dish though and good portions. I did like the green chile. It was spicy and had good flavor. The side of French toast was yummy. Good portion for a side and lots of maple syrup. Overall I recommend this cafe/diner for breakfast/brunch. The service was decent and food was good for the price point and all that. This would not be my first choice for amazing food and service, but it's a solid option and affordable. The decor inside is fine and there is good seating inside and outside.

Yelp
I have been dining at the South Side Walnut Cafe for years and have always enjoyed my meals. Last Wednesday my brother (who was here from out of town) and I had breakfast there and it was extremely disappointing! We both ordered scrambles and the portions were very small (probably a little more than one egg in each of them)! The potatoes were dry and overcooked and the entire meal was lukewarm when it was served to us. It's sad to say, but unfortunately I'm probably going to take that restaurant off my breakfast option list.

Yelp
Always super friendly staff. Food is fast! and delicious! so many menu options. gluten free pancakes are the secret winner

Shelby M.

Yelp
This is my favorite place ever to eat breakfast. My best friend and I come here every Sunday per tradition, however I've started coming in alone during the week. Not only is the food spectacular, the service is incredible. Karen is one of the sweetest, most attentive, and kind servers I have ever met. I am so grateful to spend my time here, thank you to everyone who makes this place special.

Yelp
Amazing brunch spot in Boulder. Food is served fast as you read about on here. Large menu available and indoor and outdoor seating options too. Folks love the outdoor patio when it's warm. Pesto Quesadilla lives up the hype, and I highly recommend. Good food options for kids as well. Great service. Large parking lot. Overall I definitely recommend you check this place out for breakfast or lunch!
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly service. Good range of options (inc gluten free). Chai's are yummy. Highly recommended

Yelp
Loved this local vibe! We were seated quickly right by the open kitchen and enjoyed watching all the delicious food come out. After eating the Eggs Marcos, I may never eat eggs without cream cheese again. It's such a perfect combo! The drinks were great... a little odd to drink the hot beverage from a glass but tasty for sure. The blueberry cornbread was so yummy. It was definitely my favorite. The wait staff was so accommodating and on top of it. Our server even tried to help us find a rental property. We left so satisfied on all fronts!

Julia F.

Yelp
Food was just OK. Rice and beans were super dry and my food had very little flavor. Super bland and I also found a bug in my food. Meal looks a lot better than it tasted. I sat outside so I can't speak much on the ambiance.
google avatar

Carley E.

Yelp
service was 10/10, everyone so welcoming and happy. our server Uma is the best, and her art on the wall by register is phenomenal! pesto quesadilla is to die for. green chile is TOP tier! couldn't ask for more.

Allie U.

Yelp
Staff is always friendly and everything I've had here has been delicious. Big Dill Eggs are my favorite along with the blueberry cornbread and pumpkin pancakes. Lattes are just perfect, not overly sweet.
google avatar

Yelp
our go to for breakfast in Boulder! Service is always terrific, and the atmosphere is warm and fuzzy! Party and great food on colorful fiesta dishware! Nice twist on eggs Benedict with the dill sauce, Love love this place in south Boulder!

Yelp
When we first approached the plaza, we were a little unsure where the front door was, given all the bike racks and tables outside. We were seated right away, and we both got something from the coffee bar, which wasn't bad. I had an iced hazelnut mocha, which was a little too sweet for me. Service was good, and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time, not too quick or too late. When they set down our plates, I was confused as a huevos rancheros isn't supposed to be swimming in the salsa. I couldn't taste anything except the salsa or the occasional taste of refried beans. As for my fiancé's breakfast, it wasn't bad; the sausage had a crisp outer layer, and the best part of his meal was the potatoes; they were seasoned well. The "biscuit," which I thought was a piece of cornbread. It is probably the thickest, most dense biscuit I've personally seen. As for the oatmeal, it tasted like it was instant. Overall, I was disappointed with this place since the ratings and reviews weren't bad.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
delicious food, friendly service, highly recommend. We all got something different and everyone thought their dish was outstanding.
google avatar

Meridith G.

Yelp
The best giant face pancakes and huevos rancheros! Always poppin with all types of folks.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Southside is a fun environment with quick service and consistently good food. Copious outdoor seating, but not dog friendly. The coffee list is extensive and my favorite is the Boulder latte with honey and cinnamon flavors. Staff is friendly and your order always comes out fast from the open area kitchen. I only wish they had booze!
google avatar

Sarkis L.

Yelp
Top notch service. Epic smiles. They brought a water bowl for our dog when we sat on the patio! Super friendly peeps, and the food is excellent.
google avatar

Aoi H.

Yelp
The breakfast/brunch restaurant looks traditional inside out but the menu and unique staff will throw you off a bit. A lot of vegetarian/gluten free options on their menu. I got the huevos ranchero with no cheese and sour cream on the side. The beans, salsa, tortilla topped with over easy eggs went well together but felt as something was missing (I do like bacon a lot) . The latte their is exceptionally good! Swing by for a inclusive menu with well fashioned, and kind staff
google avatar

Veronique C.

Yelp
Due to Covid, they have added plenty of tables outside with umbrellas! For breakfast recently, I had the quiche with potatoes and yummy blueberry cornbread, everything was delicious. Prices are reasonable considering the generous portions. Service is friendly and the food is great, really can't ask for more. You can order online too, but their expanded patio is nice and we might as well take advantage of it while the weather is cooperating!

J. W.

Yelp
Really disappointed. I ordered Huevos Rancheros and my wife ordered an omelette. The huevos were very wet and bland. The potatoes I got with them were undercooked and bland. My wife requested ketchup for her eggs and jam for an English muffin and neither were included. She said the omelette itself was decent but the muffin was rubbery. I really want to support a small business, but I feel the food would have been better and cheaper at Starbucks down the street.
google avatar

K J.

Yelp
Came for a late lunch with breakfast on the mind. Liked that it was easy access for all and we rolled up to a table. Waitstaff was prompt and efficient and kept the coffee filled up! I enjoyed my chai and Mexican egg omelette with egg whites- but our guests yummy burrito stuffed with fillings and served "Christmas" style (red and green Chile sauces on top) will be my next choice. Sides come with your meal and sister opted for grits and fruit salad- I gave my cornbread to others but it looked great. Fair prices and portions. Open breakfast and lunch it is packed on the weekends for a reason!
google avatar

Jill L.

Yelp
Excellent post-run brunch spot! Everything was so delicious and I will definitely drive from Denver to come to this place again. Originally the service wasn't too great, but then another waiter (who wasn't ours) saw that we'd been waiting and took care of us! We got the banana walnut French toast with whipped cream and man, that was fabulous. We also got the south side omelette with potatoes and a biscuit and both were great as well. Great location too. Can't wait to come back and try more!
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
I had the bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast croissant . It was really good. Orange juice was great. I had two mocha lattes cause they were so good and I'm not a morning person and needed caffeine! I'm from Texas on vacation and it was a nice spot to have breakfast at. Great service too and clean restaurant.
google avatar

Lydia M.

Yelp
Love this place. Service is always great, food is always fresh and fast. While everything is made to order, there is never a long wait for food or drinks. Their kitchen is even open so you're able to watch everything be cooked which assures cleanliness. Never been disappointed with a meal, and prices are always reasonable. Lots of vegan options too. 10/10 breakfast joint.
google avatar

Cassidy R.

Yelp
Delicious breakfast spot! I had the Carmelita Latte and the Farmer's Scramble and they were both delicious! The outdoor seating is very nice and I was able to work while I had breakfast. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
I am so happy to have something relatively close to us for breakfast and that I never really have to wait that long. We have come here many times because it's close to my yoga studio and are always impressed with the service and quality of food. We love the south side walnut cafe for their "Boulder Fare" and "Fancy Sandwiches" but my favorite is their delicious coffee drinks. My favorite is the Walnutty Latte!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Very delicious and unique menu items to be found here!! Tucked into a strip mall this little cafe is a colorful and cheery dining establishment with yummy food. They are very family friendly offering high chairs, boosters, crayons & paper and even have a toy bucket in the waiting area for kids to play with. Including a kids menu too which is great! I loved their coffee options - the walnutty latte I ordered was super scrumptious with ever sip. I did NOT want that drink to end !! Not too sweet, but with all the right flavors I really loved it. Though I wasn't feeling eggs when we went and opted for some breaded goodness and potatoes, my husband got an omlette that he said was tasty. The pancakes he got as a side were hearty and perfectly syrup absorbing. I tried out their blueberry cornbread and it was moist, which is fabulous since I really don't like dry crumbling cornbread. Though a little messy, its all in the good way and I could get butter on it before it coming apart so win win!! And that is another nice detail about this place, they have those little pads of butter when you need butter with ALL THE THINGS :) but its softened !!! what a relief, because one of my pet peeves is cold butter and then you spend a lot of time breaking whatever breaded item you are trying to use it on..... Overall, really great first time experience and its on our list to return to for sure. My son had a great time, he loved their banana bread (mama did too they put a lil ginger in it so its unique and great). If this place is on your list, hit it up - you will leave happy!

Yelp
Delicious food casual atmosphere great service. The only reason I give it four stars is because I didn't love the coffee.
google avatar

Amy B.

Yelp
Terrible awful service. Great food. I have come here twice because they offer gluten free French toast and pancakes. Both are amazingly delicious. The pancakes are super fluffy and fat, with just a very slight crunch on the outside. Toast slices are on the smaller side (as most gf bread is) but taste amazing no matter the topping. I asked about eggs being safe to eat but the waitress simply said they were cooked on another side of the grill so I didn't take the chance. Didn't get sick from the toast and pancakes though! The service now.... holy criminey the girl brought us our checks not even halfway through with our meals! It must have been 3 or 4 minutes after serving us! Then she stands there waiting for me to sign and tip while my friends continue to eat with her right there. On top of it all, the very lowest suggested tip amount was 18%, going all the way up to 25%. REALLY? You think you're getting 25% acting like that? On top of it we finished eating and were talking and the waitress came back again TO ASK IF WE WANTED THE CHECK!!! I curtly responded that we were given the check halfway through our meal and are just talking now, but thanks for checking to see if we needed anything else. -_- Ooohhhh I was mad. Seriously guys. Get your service together. I love the food but I'm not coming back if this is how you treat customers.

Yelp
Visited this place on Martin Luther Kings day around 9am. It was crowded but we were seated right away given their was couple of tables left. The service was super friendly. I went with the skip scramble. It was good liked the combination of the cheese and the veggie sausages. Although felt the egg portion relative to the other ingredients was a bit small. I also choose the banana nut bread and the cornbread as my two sides. The banana nut bread was just ok and I won't recommend it if you want something sweet. The blueberry cornbread was tasty. My wife went with the omelette where you basically choose what ingredients to have. She seemed to like it. Overall here are my ratings: Skip scramble: 8/10 Blueberry cornbread: 8/10 Banana nut bread: 7/10

Erin T.

Yelp
I used to love the walnut cafe - it was our go to spot but today felt really different. Location was on walnut not Broadway. Felt really ripped off by the server who charged us at least $6-10 more than we were supposed to be charged and made a ton of mistakes with our order. Food was less than desirable and really expensive. I told the server about the mistake and she said she told us ahead of time but my kids said she never did and I didn't hear her either. I say, slow down ya'll and pay attention to who you are serving. It might get you a better tip in the future.
google avatar

JJ P.

Yelp
The prices here are reasonable. The food, for the most part is not horrible. It's just remarkably tasteless. I marvel at how many of the ingredients come together to be so flavorless. The service is less bad, rather it is non existent. It is HIGHLY uncommon for anyone to speak to you in any fashion--post order--when slitting at the bar. No check in and you better have asked/ received everything you wanted, as you are blind to them now! Finally, the biscuits. This is the atrocious thing they pass off as a biscuit. It looks like cornbread made out of flour, however when you try to touch it with butter or jelly or your fingers it disintegrates into a pile. I had to eat the same thing but it was grits with a fork because I couldn't lift it an inch off the plate without it disintegrating. This is a pine restaurant if you want to club sandwich and you don't want to speak to you about it because it ain't happening. Otherwise Go elsewhere!
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
Visiting friends nearby, ate at the South Side Walnut cafe twice. Both times, the food was good, the service though was terrible. Attitude from two different servers was over the top. Coming from Boston, we're used to attitude, expected Boulder to be more chill.
google avatar

Karina M.

Yelp
Loved checking out this place in town! The coffee here is a little stronger than I'm used to and has a slightly stronger after taste, so I definitely need that cream or milk with it. A friend and I split the breakfast burrito with black beans and both red and green sauce and the blueberry cornbread pancakes. Both were really great! The combination of sauces on the breakfast burrito worked well. I felt like the olives were a little extraneous on the plate but all the flavors of the burrito itself were really good. The blueberry cornbread pancakes were soft and fluffy with a cornbread like crunch on the bottom of the pancake. We had some leftovers of this and while most pancakes don't necessarily keep really well as leftovers--these stayed fluffy and not rubbery the next day!
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
Solid place for breakfast and lunch. Seems like reasonable pricing. Always have had good service, seating is expanded for covid, and they seem to be taking all the proper precautions. Try the club sandwich, it's your classic 3 layer sandwich, always solid! Great for vegetarians as well!
google avatar

Souzana V.

Yelp
Went to brunch with my date on a Sunday (6/3/2018) to try out this place. Breakfast was good. Service took a little bit long. Maybe it was because their system went down. I will definitely go back to try the place again and update my review.

Yelp
BEST coffee for a cafe! Also great food and service to match. They have GF options which is super nice and accommodate requests.
