"South Street’s iconic blue-and-white building with takeout windows facing the street has been going strong for more than four decades. Owner Tom Vasiliades serves Greek and Mediterranean fare to hungry crowds traversing Philly’s weirdest street. At the takeout window, try a souvlaki or gyro sandwich — both come on pita with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki. When dining in, kick the meal off with saganaki: Greek kasseri cheese that’s doused in brandy and set on fire." - Sarah Maiellano, Rachel Vigoda

We've loved South Street Souvlaki for over 25-yrs! Excellent gyros, fabulous Greek Sampler appetizer with numerous Mediterranean delicacies, and the best hummus I've ever had anywhere. Prices are very reasonable, portions are generous, food quality is excellent, and dishes are homemade. It shows. Service is solid and atmosphere is cozy. A bit tight and cramped, but interesting interior and bar space, with view into kitchen. We love the quality and consistency of South St. Souvlaki for an authentic taste of Greece right here in Philly!

Google
This restaurant has been on south street since the late 70s and I can see why. This is authentic Greek food to a T! We were here Valentine’s Day and the restaurant looked the part, and we were big fans of their food. The lamb and chicken kebabs were fire. The sides including rice, potatoes, and hummus were great too. Alcohol selection had plenty of good options to choose from. Looking forward to the next visit here

Google
A hidden gem on South Street! A great variety of Greek food made fresh. We tried the 2 for $46 dinner and everything was excellent! The beets with skordalia were amazing, and so were the salads. We tried the stuffed tomatoes and the Imam Baldi and we loved both. For dessert we had baklava and galaktobouriko and both were very good. (I apologize for the dessert pictures but we started eating before I decided to take a picture). Of course our drink of choice was Ouzo on the rocks with a splash of water. We’re definitely going back!

Google
Me and my husband been all over the world and this is one of our favorite restaurants ever we come from New Jersey to Philadelphia just for this place Tom used to be the owner. The new takeovers are awesome Miss Tom and his conversations Miss Barbara Tom, the Bartender was awesome. See you guys this afternoon. Much love. The grants

Google
You have probably already gotten the Souvlaki or the Gyro, but what you might not know about is the delicious Greek Coffee and the perfectly charred Pork Chops. The Greek Salad with Chicken is also very good. Overall, excellent meals here.

Google
Love this place been here many times and it never disappoints. I usually get the Youvesti which is braised lamb with orzo it’s my favorite from here but this visit I got the trio combo moussaka pastitsio and spanakopita all three were delicious my fiancé got the grilled lamb chops I tried some of his and they were so juicy tender and flavorful. I love the atmosphere and that they play nice Greek music!

Katrina Knisely

Google
The grilled octopus was flavorful but very small for the price. I would not get the hummus again-it lacked flavor. The pita didn’t seem especially fresh. I wouldn’t doubt that they do a better job on meat based dishes, but for the specific food I wanted I wouldn’t go back.

Google
The staff is very friendly and the food is delicious! Highly recommend the Baba ghanoush and Gyro sandwich!

Malinda D.

Yelp
I only ever get the GYRO. LOVE IT & it's great quality every time. I got a couple other random things that were ok. Stick to the GYRO!

Payal P.

Yelp
This place is awesome. It has authentic Greek food at a great price point. The service was very quick (the guy seemed like he either owned the restaurant or his family owned the place). He was constantly checking up on us with his adorable Greek accent. We got the Grape Leaves and Baba Ghanoush to start out with. They both were amazing. The Baba Ghanoush was perfect. It was creamy and had chunky tomatoes and some cheese in the mix. The gyro meat was delicious. I really liked how fresh all the ingredients were. The whole wrap was super warm and toasty. The tomatoes and lettuce were crispy as well. The place also has a whole bar in the restaurant if you did want a drink and not just amazing Greek food.

Yelp
I came into South Street Souvlaki hungrier than a 2006 Brian Dawkins, ready to have an absolute feast without hurting the pockets too much. My Chase Sapphire Preferred card is tiiiiirrreeeeddddd these days. I walked in and sat right at the table bordering a window that looked out onto South Street. South street is so different ahaha. FULL of characters on those little spider bikes playing music so loud you can't hear yourself think. Fantastic people watching, head on a swivel tho. There was only one girl working this place, and she was also the bartender so service wasn't the best I can't even lie, but that's no knock on her. She was doing everything she could. They need to get her some help like the Raiders need to get Davante Adams a quarterback. After I was handed a menu I had to double, then triple check the pricing. INFLATION BUSTER ALERT!!!!!! Sandwiches only $8??!?! Combo platters only $14?! I guess $14 might not sound like that big a deal, but NYC prices have really abused me smh. I opted to get the Tzatziki, stuffed grape leaves, and a lamb gyro meat platter. A proper feast for the Croatian Orangutan. AKA, me. While awaiting my royal feast, I ordered a Manhattan and it came in a circular glass. I lowkey chirped this on my IG story essentially saying "what kind of glass is this for a Manhattan?" But, one of my overly-masculine (like what you overcompensating for bro? What you tryna hide?) friends said "that's pretty standard brotha!" A quick google search proved him correct. One of my best traits, if I may say so myself, is I can take constructive criticism with the best of them when presented with proper evidence. However, the 2nd Manhattan came in the normal V-shaped glass, so........ I'll let y'all be the judge. The pita bread with the Tzatziki was perfect. And I mean perfect. Soft on the top, yet a little crisp on the bottom. Real ones know what I'm talmbout. The stuffed grape leaves also smacked. I always get the stuffed grape leaves everywhere I go, they just don't miss. That's a good life hack for y'all. The gyro platter, while getting the job done, did not blow me away. However it was a great portion size and decent quality. For the price, I'm not complaining. Thank you, South Street Souvlaki. Damn, Brian Dawkins really never got a ring!?!?!?! That's a top 5 world tragedy........ IG @jnov_ Tiktok @jnov__

Yelp
I had the worst food poisoning in recent memory 30 minutes after eating their food. I don't know if it was the sauce, rice or meat that caused it but I've never been sicker. I have a strong stomach and I was so shocked by how sick I got so quickly. Was awful. Do not recommend this business

Ramses F.

Yelp
Nice spot open late and has fresh food you can smell from the street before you even walk in. Would definitely go back and recommend to others.

Kayeff C.

Yelp
Fantastic place. My friend Alison and I came here after an avant-garde shoegaze show at Pageant Soloveev and got the souvlaki.

Julia Z.

Yelp
This place is a super cute, intimate restaurant. Their staff are very kind and patient, and you don't wait long at all for your food. The portions are huge so be prepared for that but the pricing is great. 12 bucks for an entree that can feed me for 2 days is pretty great. Definitely recommend this place!

Jennifer Z.

Yelp
My sister & I arrived hungry. Friendly greeting right away. Walked in where there buffer style area. He said it didn't matter which door to come in. Sat quickly, and waiter gave us waters quickly. I was so excited to see Baba Ganush on the menu. It was so good that I could have ordered a bucket of it. Hummus was light and fresh tasting. Falafel was crunchy outside and pillowy inside - could use a touch of salt. My sis ate all her lentil soup & liked it. I got marinated chicken kabobs in a pita with taziki sauce. Bathroom was clean. Murals were so pretty & I loved the Greek music. Nice added touches. This places been here for 43 years. I told my fam where I went & they were excited it's still there that we're all planning to go.

Ryan S.

Yelp
Good quantity and quality. Was impressed with the cleanliness when I walked in. Waitress wiped down what was already a clean table. We ordered the chicken kabob sandwich and wife did gyro platter. We also got coffees. She got the Greek coffee which came in an espresso cup and was slightly sweetened. Price was good. Would return.

Stan H.

Yelp
Prices are reasonable and food is delicious! I had the greek lasagna and greek coffee. Service was quality. Food was fresh. Small place, especially for a bigger group. Credit cards are only accepted in the dining area part of the restaurant.

Carmen M.

Yelp
First time here and everything was great. They were out of Sangria and two of their signature drinks. We had Hummus with pita with was good. Spinach Pie was really good we all loved, party of four. My daughter had grilled pork chops and those pork chops were huge! Granddaughter had the Gyro Platter which was lamb with rice and vegetables. My son-in-law had a Chiro wrap which I tried, and I think I should've gotten that it was delicious and huge.. I had the Pork Tenderloin Kebab with red rice and brussels sprouts, which were delicious, I found them great taste that I was eating them off of everyone else's plate. The drink of choice was a Berry Hibiscus Margarita which was OK I preferred to have a sangria or one of the specialty drinks they were out of all three of them. I will definitely go back. This place has been there for 46 years. I will definitely go back to try something different and hopefully that they will have sangria and their specialty drinks next I visit. The server was amazing. I overheard him tell another table that he is weird. I thought that was cute of him to say that he did have glasses in the dark hair and very tall. He was very helpful friendly and gave great suggestions. Thank you to the weirdo you made my evening.

Michael L.

Yelp
Best Greek food I've ever eaten. Every trip to Philly includes a stop here for lunch or dinner.

Mark K.

Yelp
You want a fast gyro or hot lunch/dinner with lots of choice when it comes to Greek/Mediterranean food? Then you will love this spot. From the pork and chicken sticks they sell right out the window to the gyros. I have never had a bad meal from this place. Also it's owned by a family so when you buy from them you are support local guys.

JD V.

Yelp
Once I figured out there was a sit down spot in the back... I was delighted by the food! Souvlaki was tremendous... baklava did not disappoint. Short staffed when I was there, but that's expected when eating out now. Great food, nice, intimate environment. I will dine again next time I'm in Philly!

Julie W.

Yelp
Gyros are solid. I ordered the souvlaki platter with beef and got chicken instead. Still great flavor, good rice and potatoes on the side. It was a good amount of food too and fast service (15 mins to do pickup). I'll order from here again

Fiona C.

Yelp
Where they treat you like family and feed you like family. I had the greek combo #1 and my husband had the grilled chicken salad. It was absolutely amazing quality probably the best greek food in Philly. Amazing service beautiful atmosphere and food that will knock you over with flavor. Alicia is a sweetheart. They even have a vegan menu for our veggie loving friends. This is a MUST TRY. We will be back.

Yelp
My favorite restaurant in Philly!!! The food is always amazing!!! Great prices and great atmosphere!!! I tried several different dishes here and one is just as good as the next. Love love love this place!!! Whether it's to grab a quick Gyro on the go or to sit down for a nice meal, it's always a great experience!!

Jim R.

Yelp
Coming back from down the shore right in time for lunch, it seemed like our favorite Greek restaurant was calling to us as we crossed the bridge into Philly! At this time it's Take Out only but still as good as always. From the family sized portion of Houmus to the best Gyro around, it's a hard place to beat. Topped off with a very generous slice of Spinach Cheese pie, it was good to almost be home. Can't wait till it's open for indoor dining again so that we can talk to the very friendly staff and Tom, the owner.

Jay S.

Yelp
This was the first restaurant I ate in years ago when I moved to the city. It has been a favorite of mine for 10 years. I eat here whenever I'm close. It's sad to say that I will not return after the experience that I had last time I was there. The table I was sat at was a little dirty so I cleaned it my self with a napkin, no big deal. Then the service I received was horrendous. It was the first time in my life that I genuinely didn't want to leave a tip. The waitress was so rude. In the beginning I thought it was the language barrier but I quickly realized it was her attitude, I felt like a nuisance. I didn't get a refill on my drink I got my food and she disappeared until it was time to pay. I will not return there again.

Doron K.

Yelp
Been ordering there several times. Fresh good and tasty Love this place. Truly Greek food

Lisa D.

Yelp
The food was so fresh and tasted fabulous!! We had the hummus and falafel appetizer and also the flaming brandy cheese appetizer. OPA!!! Hummus is the best I have ever had! So fresh and yummy. For entrees we ordered the gyros platter and the chicken stuffed peppers!! They were served family style and had extra vegetables and rice sides included. The spinach sauté with rice was something I could eat all by itself! Delicious!!! The menu is extensive with many traditional favorites!! The service was so attentive and polite. There is also a bar although we didn't order alcohol. There is a traditional takeout area when you first enter but the dining room seating is in the back!!

James H.

Yelp
great service, food and atmosphere. I love the old school feel o a family owned restaurant. Lots of options on the extensive menu.

Jenn J.

Yelp
I have loved this spot since the mid 90s. I will always make a point to stop here any chance I get. Best gyros ever but also try the orzo and the potato's. Both are fantastic. Just make sure to check that they're open as the close occasionally for a few weeks during the year. Once at least but maybe twice? But please visit this establishment for some great Greek dishes. I don't think you'll be disappointed

Paul H.

Yelp
My favorite Greek restaurant in Philly. My father-in-law is Greek, and when he comes to visit Philly, we almost always go out for Greek food. We've been to a few spots, but South Street Souvlaki is our favorite. The owner is Greek and is a great guy. Start out with Baba Ghounash or fried calimari. Our favorite dishes are the Souvlaki Platter (pork)--so good, and the Greek Style Shrimp--there's a family and individual portion, and even the individual portion is huge. We end up here about twice a month now, and it never gets old. Sunday nights are a great time to go--not too busy. Definitely check this place this out!

Carol R.

Yelp
Love just being able to order a gyro by the window and going on my merry way. They don't skimp on the meat, either! For my most recent visit, I ordered takeout during the pandemic, so I got to try their less portable items, including lamb, roast chicken, and more. Was pleasantly surprised about how tender and soft their meat was! Both chicken and lamb just fell off the bone.

Ben S.

Yelp
We finished dinner at Jim's and we're bummed they didn't offer French fries. We'd passed this place on the way and figured we'd stop in for those and a couple kebabs. Fries were cooked fresh while we waited and the kebabs were grilled right there. Plenty of other items looked good on the steam table.

Mursal H.

Yelp
Going off the good reviews, my husband and I ordered from this restaurant via seamless and we were both left disappointed. We ordered the lamb/beef gyro, Souvlaki gyro (shish kebab), and a baklava. Not only did we receive our food cold but my shish kebab arrived with 4 small pieces of chicken and the baklava was smallest piece we'd ever seen (for $6!). Either we didn't order the right thing or just got really unlucky. Both we were both left unsatisfied and still hungry..

Brad G.

Yelp
I'd likely pass this place up if I walked by it. I love Greek food, but I normally don't crave it. A recommendation alongside an early dinner with friends brought us here. The thing I immediately noticed was the open kitchen. Oddly, I didn't get hit by any smells that would make me crave food. We were seated right away. It should be noted that it was around 4:30 and our friends made reservations. I'm not sure when this place gets busy. From the food I ordered, I bet it stays busy for dinner on the weekend. This was a pre-concert meal so I hadn't planned on eating too much. They have plenty of apps to choose from. Cold apps, hot apps, soups, and salads. Not only are the choices abundant, they also can be ordered in different sizes incase you're feeding a family/group. For the appetizer, we decided to order Feta Saganakiopa - melted feta with olive oil and red pepper. It came with pita bread. I LOVED it! I've never had feta like that and I'm curious if it can be found in Louisville. The search begins. Again, pre-concert meal so it influenced my entree decision. There were many choices! I wanted to order quite a few things. I decided to be boring and go with a falafel sandwich - on pita with lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki sauce. I LOVED this sandwich too! This falafel sandwich was on a much different level than any others that I've tried! I only wish that I could've finished it. It satisfied my appetite fast. With an impending concert, I had to leave room for beer and being generally comfortable. With so many places to eat in Philly, it's hard to recommend any one place over another. If you do go here, I can assure you that you'll be treated to tasty food. Other notables: -- Staff is fun! (Especially when they have their quiet facial expressions about loud kids at a nearby table that the parents just wouldn't control - Luckily it was near the end of our meal - What a terrifying child) -- The owner came out and joked around with someone at our table. The joke stemmed from someone saying, "Oh my God"... the owner stopped and said something like, "Did you call me over here?" (It was totally a you had to be there joke) -- The lighting seemed dark to me. -- The food came out fast. -- Everyone was friendly as we left. Goodbyes and pleasantries were had by all.

Marisa A.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem on south street! Sat inside near the window on a beautiful weekday. Tried the hummus and gyro and it was delicious and tasted so fresh. The service was so friendly and I definitely will go back.

Mae P.

Yelp
yummiest cheapest best meal ever!!!!! get the tzatziki and spinach with rice and egg lemon soup and a gyro all for $27!! im obsessseddddd thank u

Allie A.

Yelp
Brought my nephew here who had never had really a serious Greek meal before. This place was around back in my wild and crazy college days when we used to drive for an HOUR from campus just to sit around here, eat and drink and talk for hours at a time. It was lovely to have a very nice and enthusiastic waitress who also has been around for a good couple of decades. We started off with different platter combinations so he could try out the Greek salads and souvlaki and gyros. Everything was generously sized and lots of flavor. We ordered flan and baklava for dessert, both small servings but packed a ton of flavor. Eric opted for the powder keg Greek coffee in a tiny cup - he probably stayed awake for 12 hours because of that. I love that they have an open kitchen set up in front for brisk take away service if you want something quick. I'll need to pop by for lunch. Total for 2 was $60 including tip. We sat in the back, which was great until a loud group came in.

Dung N.

Yelp
Everything was pretty delicious. My boyfriend and I ordered the family size gyro platter with hummus and falafel as an appetizer. Towards the end of the meal, our waitress gave us a sweet desert. Service was quick, the waitress answered all of our questions and was very friendly. I recommend this place if you're in the mood for Greek.

Deirdre C.

Yelp
This restaurant is good all the time, no matter what! The food is always fresh and the hummus-OMG, I dream about it! Going here for lunch today and I can't wait!

Julie P.

Yelp
Fantastic food! Consistently great tasting gyros, dolmas, salads and baklava. Many other meals to choose from. This is a real treat!

Jill M.

Yelp
I had an order delivered to my hotel via Grub Hub and it was fantastic! I had the Pastitso (Greek lasagna) and the portion was huge. Sautéed veggies that came with it were delicious, squash, cabbage, potatoes...yum. Small Greek salad ($6.95) was also nice and big and loaded with goodies, like cucumbers, radishes and chick peas. My favorite though was Tom's famous Greek yogurt, homemade, with layers of walnuts and honey. Portion was so generous, I ate it for two days. It was fantastic. I can't wait to be back in Philly and order from here again!

Teddy G.

Yelp
Amazing hole in the wall Greek place. The hummus and beets/garlic appetizers are amazing, as was my sandwich. I cannot wait to come back. The pita couldn't have been more fresh.

Benjamin K.

Yelp
Pretty good souvlaki and gyros. Has a nice take-out area, and combos are priced very well. Has full assortment of Greek food, but I mainly come for the souvlaki. Their sandwiches are also pretty good in general. So when I'm craving this sort of thing, this is where I go. Philly Classic.

Shiv G.

Yelp
Absolutely in love with this place! Came here with my parents and brother yesterday night to celebrate my dad's birthday. We were met by such nice and welcoming staff and our server was super attentive and sweet, and really tried to suggest the best meals based on my rents' preferences. (They never know what they'll order, pretty much leaving the decision to the server's suggestions lol) We all split the platter with hummus, grape leaves, etc. They'll give you as much pita as you'll like! Great dish and a great way to get a sampling of all the different spreads/dips. Quite filling! Then I ordered the chicken Kebab which was flavorful, well cooked, and paired with delicious potatoes and rice. The tomato (broth?) for the potatoes was simple but still packed with flavor. Customer service and authentic cuisine definitely gives this place 5 stars in my mind. 10/10 recommend!

Devyn C.

Yelp
Yummy and Delicious! We didn't think they had indoor seating as it looks like a "to-go" only place from the sidewalk. We walked in, passed the long to-go order counter and in the rear was a door leading to a comfortable dining room. After being seated, we perused the menu and both of us commented on how reasonable the prices are. My partner ordered the Chicken Kabob and I ordered the Pork Souvlaki. Both of our meals were served over rice with asparagus along with pita on the side. It's obvious the servers have worked there for years. They were a bit on the gruff side, but not in a bad way. The service was fairly good overall, and our server cracked a smile when I responded to a question with a silly answer. The food was quite delicious and flavorful. The amazing thing was that dinner for two including two glasses of wine and an iced tea came to only about $40. We are still new to Philly and are thrilled to add another tasty place to our list of neighborhood dining options.

Richard R.

Yelp
I went with a a party of 6 on a cold Winter's night. South Street Souvlaki was very warm and pleasant inside. It was nice to be transplanted to Mediterranean Greece, at least for an hour or so. There are nicely painted murals on the walls and the place has a charming and rustic casual feel. Service was great and the staff made sure we had everything and enjoyed our food. Our appetizers and plates came out very fast. We had a good array of food from fried calamari, Lentel soup, Octopus salad, Grilled Porgy Fish, Eggplant, Mousaka and the grilled Lamp Chop. I had the lamb chop and it was super tasty and juicy over a nice bed of vegetables. South Street Souvlaki also has a small bar area and decent beer selection. Its is a great place to go when in the South Street area and hungry for some Mediterranean food. The prices are pretty decent also.

Kathy V.

Yelp
If you are in Philly and like Greek food, you need to go here! This place came highly and forcefully recommended by some friends from the area for our visit. As it just so happens they were in town the same weekend we were, so they made early reservations (not necessary, but it didn't hurt) and we all met here for dinner before a concert on a Saturday evening. There are 2 entrances, one that enters directly to the sit-down/bar part of the restaurant, another that leads to a more to-go/open kitchen type of area. You can get to the sit-down table service side from that side too....it's just a little awkward. If you are going for a sit down meal, use the entry closest to the street corner. Our server was pure Philly. Which is to say a bit brusque, but not rude. Some of the starters/appetizers come in two sizes, to be more easily shareable. We started off with the feta sagankiopa. The feta tasted a little bitter to me...but I will never say no to feta. I will eat it ALL. All the time always. For my main meal, I got the kefte sandwich and it was delicious! And it was a smaller "meal" but I still could not finish it! I would order it again....but also not, because there are SO MANY OTHER delicious looking things on the menu! As we were finishing up, a family with a small, shrieking child was sat very close to us. We were able to pay quickly and be on our way, but not before sharing understanding and sympathetic eye rolls and non-verbal "I'm so sorrys" in commiseration with the waitstaff who had to remain and put up with it. I felt bad for them, but laughed in our momentary shared misery.

Amanda S.

Yelp
Consistently delicious and fresh with a wonderful price point. The octopus is out of this world!

Haley W.

Yelp
Great hole in the wall place. I got a regular gyro and it was delicious. Very affordable too, great prices.

Neha D.

Yelp
Great place, authentic food and the nicest people. Also the fact that it is so affordable compared to some other Greek establishments really is the cherry on top. We had the mezze, shawarma sandwich and the moussaka - all excellent. Can't wait to go back and try others on the menu. Such a great neighborhood spot- cozy , warm and filled with great food and people!!

Alisha B.

Yelp
I come for the sandwiches. I've had them all, and they never fail to disappoint. The chicken kebab sandwich needed a little salt on the chicken but other than that, delish. I suppose I'll eventually try some of their other dishes lol.

Alyssa D.

Yelp
Looks just like the pictures! Quick service! Friendly workers. Meat was savory. One of the best Gyros i've ever has!

dominique s.

Yelp
This place has the best Greek food of all time !! The chicken kebabs are to die for and they have so many side dishes .

Zachery O.

Yelp
I'm not sure why this establishments has good reviews. As soon as you sit down there is a list of rules on the front of the menu like "20 card minimum" and "no cell phones" "no loud children" "gratuities not included". So needless to say it wasn't very welcoming. I ordered the Gyro Platter for 12 dollars and was surpised as I got my food literally 1 minute from the time the order was placed. Nasty boiled vegatables, overcooked mushy tasteless rice, dry Gyro meat. My glass was dirty so I couldn't even wash the sloppy food down with some water. I really have no idea how a place this bad can stay open on South Street with such bland tastless food. Why go here when you can walk across the street to Jim's Steaks or to the other Greek establishment two blocks down. Don't go here if you're looking for a fresh, appetizing Greek meal. It's hard to screw up a Gyro, but they did it!

Jeff H.

Yelp
South Street Souvlaki has been on South Street since the beginning of time. Well actually it started in 1977 so practically the beginning of time. It has both an eat-in dining room or a take-out area. Your choice. The food the restaurant is named for, they do excellently here - the Souvlaki sandwich. It is very large and even tastier if you add some hot peppers to it. I also like the Avgolemono soup. It was a flavorful combination of chicken, broth, lemon, and egg. There is a lot to see that is hanging on the walls of the main dining room. What didn't I like? The TV behind me in the bar area that was on a channel talking about the recent US Presidential election. It was too loud, no one wanted to hear it.
