Where to Drink at Waco’s Best Breweries and Bars | Eater Dallas

"This spot grew from a home brewing project into a full on brewery that opened in Waco in 2018. It’s focus is on making the best versions of the basics — those beloved craft beers served in peak form. Order its signature IPA, wheat ale brew, or the honey lager. It also serves pizzas, wings, and salads." - Courtney E. Smith

I don’t know how this place has good reviews, people must be drunk when reviewing. The food took forever, they were not busy! The pizza was not good, the cheese tasted refrigerated and not fresh. The wings were not editable, they were raw and very fatty. The pizza came out first, then the wings and then the pretzel….all three items took a 20 min span to receive everything. Food should not come out in batches, taking that long in between receiving each item. It should for the most part come out around the same time. We ordered a pretzel for an appetizer and it came out last. Don’t waste your money here on food. It’s not worth it. Stick to the beer!

Love the open atmosphere. Choose from pizza, wings, and pretzels plus craft beer. The pretzel and queso was delicious. Very laid back. We enjoyed it.

Google
Great place to grab some wings or pizza. Large parties welcome, with a great area to eat and drink. Every beer I tried was great. Worth stopping for the beer alone. A large selection of board games to keep you entertained if nothing on the TV is worth watching. Also plenty of space to just chill with friends or a date. Parking can be limited on the side but plenty of parking around the area. Didn't forget to use untapped to track and provide feedback to the brewers. Fun place!

Coming from a state with well over 400 breweries and a lot of winter snow (hey....there's not much to do in the winter if you don't ski, so breweries come in handy), we know a good one when we see one. Our first visit to Southern Roots provided us with a tasty standard American Stout called Goat Cave. Odd name unless it was named after the Goat Cave Karst Preserve in Austin and produced using the water from the Barton Springs Edwards Aquifer. But I digress. We enjoyed the Stout and the bartenders were very helpful and a delight to meet. Thank you to everyone at Southern Roots Brewing Company for a satisfying experience.

I wanted to like this place so bad, it was a TikTok recommendation. But unfortunately they weren’t very friendly or welcoming. We got waters since they don’t serve liquor and we aren’t beer drinkers however we heard the lady who took our order talking about us because we only ordered water to drink with our food. She also delivered the food quickly didn’t ask if we needed anything or make eye contact just dropped it off as quick as possible& took off. 1 side of ranch was served for 10 wings.

Google
Walkable to downtown Waco and shopping. Super fun brewery after work date spot! The beer here is so good and they rotate a ton of their own special crafted beers. We got the pretzel bites and the pizza. Both were so good! The pizza crust was crispy and had a ton of flavor. One of the better pizzas in Waco! Definitely could go here to just grab a beer with some friends.

Google
Great service and knowledge on beer choices! The pizza is fresh with a yummy neopolitan crust. Great family friendly casual place to hang downtown after a day of touristy stuff.

Google
Nice place. Ordered a pizza & wings. Got our food, both came out together, took about 15 minutes, not long. I picked up my first wing to eat, ICE COLD!!!!! I put it down real quick!! Thought to myself, WTH!!! I picked up another one thinking maybe not this one too. It's was. The skin was fleshy, the meat was not cooked. Looks like I will be baking chicken when I get home!!! The pizza was alright. This place isn't for eating at. Sad thing is, you order at the counter, pay, leave a tip. You get your food, and it feels like you're been robbed. Lesson learned. Never ordered buffalo wings that were not cooked. I wonder if the kitchen even bothered.

Yelp
Amazing beer and great pizza try the southern belle you can't go wrong with some homemade ranch for the crust because nothing is needed on the spectacular pizza. Atmosphere is chill and good for beer and food. Tried 5 beers and you can't go wrong with any of them would drink any of them again. Bartender Hunter was great and good conversation. Only complaint would be that the shirts do not say Waco or even TX on them. When you travel a lot it's hard to remember where a brewery was. That is a minor detail and the only room for improvement I could see. If you are in Waco make sure to stop by for a pizza and beer.

Yelp
This is a brewery and we were looking for a full on brewery and tap room. I was so excited to see a black IPA on the menu! They have a wonderful variety. I got a full pint of the black IPA. My companion got a flight. The flavors were differentiated. The beers are a little thin, maybe missing a little. But it wasn't too bad. The interior was spacious and fun. They serve pizza in the taproom. They have a back patio and live music. It's a great place. I had a pretzel that ranked among my top 2 bar pretzels ever. I love a good pretzel. Overall despite being not amazing beer it was a good hang.

Alejandro G.

Yelp
Great ambience and the food was really fresh and delicious! We tried the wings and the pizza, both amazing! Beer is mostly good! Super friendly staff
google avatar

Daniela T.

Yelp
We didn't order any food butttt we go the most delicious flights ever ! The variety was amazing, taste was there in every single beer and the service was awesome. Hunter knew exactly what beers to give us ! Not to mention he was awesome ! And a total vibe !! Ambiance is great, games , good music, and arcade games. Did I mention they're dog friendly ? Don't miss out on this place. It's a must

Yelp
Fam planned to spend the day in Waco, so after walking through the ever so famous silos and grubbing at Union hall, next on the itinerary is to do a brewery crawl. This was our first stop. It was a post lunch run on a mid-week so there were only a couple of tables occupied. Since there was about a dozen of us, we ended up occupying another two. I am designated DD, so Mom and I decided to split any pints she were to get. She let me decide on which we were going for, and being a wheat beer girl, we went for the Surfside. What I liked about this is how the flavor pops out a few seconds after taking a couple of gulps. It also lingers for a bit which I really enjoyed. Mom enjoyed it as well. They have a food menu consisting of primarily pizza and wings. Had I now had lunch a few hours before, I would have loved to have tried their grub! I would consider booking this place for a party! It's too bad I don't live anywhere near here, I'd sooo book it for a birthday gig! Good first run! Looking forward to the next!

Yelp
I came here with a friend because she lives in Fort Worth and it was a good halfway point to meet up! We went to the farmers market nearby and decided we want to try some pizza. The ambience here is super cute. It's very brewery like with large open doors in the front however, it does have A/C so it's still comfortable inside. The service was also really great. Everyone was so nice. The cashier at the front gave us. Suggestions on types of drinks that we would like because we are not familiar with beer. We ended up getting the margarita pizza, a pretzel and we shared a sour beer. Everything we got here was so good and super fresh! The pretzel was hot when it first came out and the queso was so tasty! The Margherita pizza was also really good. The cheese and tomatoes tasted great. The fresh basil on top was perfect! I would definitely suggest this place to others, and would come here again!

Scott P.

Yelp
My now wife and I had our first date here in 2023. The service was super friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Joanne J.

Yelp
Stopped by for a local brew. We were putting the girl at the register out by asking a few questions about the flights, I guess we are dumb. We ended up not getting the flights because ordering just a beer seemed to be the easiest thing to do. It would have been nice to have been offered a sample before buying each of our brews. Nonetheless, beers were good. Did not order any food. They offer cute merchandise and the back patio area was really nice to visit with friends. I'm sure there is a great atmosphere under the lights at night.

Yelp
Live music, cold beer, salty soft pretzel and delish charcuterie board - what's not to love?! Easy spot for chilling with friends on a Friday night. There's plenty of tables, high tops and low tops, a couch lounging area and a patio out back. Wide open view of activity in the kitchen and all the brewing tanks and equipment. Good selection of beer including a couple of sours (watermelon and a pineapple coconut) and a great blonde.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
If you ever find yourself in Waco, come here. Have a raspberry sour beer and the Southern Belle pizza. The small pizza is enough for one person that's extra hungry. Love this place - will definitely be back if they'll have me!
google avatar

Gary B.

Yelp
Wasn't a fan of their beers, but they had a great cider, and the pizza was terrific. Very friendly staff as well.
google avatar

Kelli D.

Yelp
Great pizza and good beer. Was visiting from California. I wish they had more food items to choose from, but I would definitely go back! Bought the hubby a cool shirt to bring home!
google avatar

Jaime C.

Yelp
Cool brewery, lots of space and kid friendly. Service was great. I got a flight and liked 3/4 of them. I really like sours but the Lady Bird had a weird after taste. Great vibes tho!
google avatar

Bella N.

Yelp
Delicious pizza and even more delicious pretzel!! Priced very well for the quality of food. Great beer choices as well! It's a great environment for all, families or date night. Service is always amazing!
google avatar

Alexander B.

Yelp
Pizza was OK, but it was super loud inside---so much so that I couldn't hear the folks in my party talking. We wound up having to eat outside.

Suzanne M.

Yelp
Preacher & the pig pizza was excellent, good hardy salad, along with Jabba's Java stout, strawberry/lime cider - Nice chill environment with jukebox, even played a game of scrabble! Highly recommend if you're in the area!
google avatar

Andrea D.

Yelp
Wonderful service was super friendly and fun. Beer was delicious!!! Pizza was phenomenal!!!! I was in town for work and now I really want to go back just for the pizza. Unique flavors
google avatar

Josephine T.

Yelp
Good beer selection, attentive service. We ordered cheese bread (really good) and a pizza (ok). Pizza had good flavor, but the crust was over cooked. They did apologize about "leaving it in too long."

Mindy T.

Yelp
This place is a gem! Food was fantastic and servers were friendly and knowledgeable. Love the laid back and family friendly atmosphere. We will definitely return to try more pizzas and enjoy another beer.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Had a pizza to go along with the excellent Damn Yankee IPA. Faith, the sole person working the front, remembered our preference from last visit, friendliness and efficiency much appreciated, great credit to the business!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
The pizza is the best I've had in Texas. The six shooter is a cheese pizza and will be bought again next time. Also, the beer was very good with a fun variety. I will come here again!
google avatar

Lauren G.

Yelp
Decent beer decent pizza but really you're coming in for the atmosphere. Tons of bar games and a nice indoor with garage doors to get that outside feel. Great for large groups
google avatar

Ariel T.

Yelp
We loved the food and beer here! This restaurant surprised us, and opened our eyes to a new kind of pizza! We liked the 6 shooter cheese pizza, but the surprise star of the night was the Rueben Pizza! It was recommended by the cashier, and though I was skeptical we gave it a try. It had a Russian dressing base on a thin crispy crust. Then they layered sauerkraut, cheese, bite sized pieces of pastrami, and pickles. Delicious Pickles! So flavorful, so we'll balanced, so yummy! It was their monthly special. I got the Amber ale and liked it, and am excited to try some other varieties. The pretzels are just pizza dough, but the queso is addictive. Can't wait to return to try their next monthly pizza special.
google avatar

Angi T.

Yelp
We did a lot of beer drinking but is one of our Pink Boot Members breweries so we had to go try it out. We got in just before closing time and it was busy. I got a flight. I feel is the best way to give a good opinion of a brewery and the styles they're able to do well. Always and I mean ALWAYS I'm going to try your Wit, Hefeweizen or Saison. They had two out of the three. It was crisp and satisfyingly good. The beer lacing on the Hefe was very good. I believe they also had food but we've been eating and drinking all day. It's a cozy spot. I saw college crowd as well as families getting out after the storms swept through. The beertenders were friendly and didn't mind giving tasters before you commit. I enjoyed my time there.
google avatar

Carly H.

Yelp
Had the Hot Blonde with a small veggie pizza and OMG that pizza crust. The beer was great and we loved the atmosphere. Would definitely go back to sample more beer and pizza!
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Great pizza and I really like their beer too. Will def be back!! Pizza of the month is interesting and the beers are really smooth and tasty.
google avatar

Robert V.

Yelp
We ate pizza which was a great New York style pie. Delicious! The service was polite and quick, they even managed to handle one difficult customer and not allow it to distract them from servicing others. The environment is typical brewery tap room feel. Comfortable and inviting. We enjoyed fellowship with friends, good beer, and some college football. I will be back!
google avatar

Amanda E.

Yelp
The service was great, so understanding and accommodating. We came in mid-day on a Sunday and took over the couches in the back so my toddler could play and bounce between laps. Food and beer were good, we would come back for the space itself.

Yelp
I have been in downtown Waco all week for work. Stayed at the Marriott Courtyard. Was looking for local beer with vegetarian options and this place popped up. Very close to hotel. This place has a great sense of space. Cement floors, iron and wood tables, expsoed ceilings and some corrugated walls to boot. Just a great space to unwind and enjoy pretty good beer. They had 3 IPAs, one of which was a double IPA. I'm impressed. They have food items but I think they specialize in pizza. Not sure what else they had i didn't look. I got the vegetable pizza which was recommended. It was ok, but the thin crust couldn't hold up to all the toppings and cheese. Maybe next time I'll try the Margherita. I came around 6:30 on a Thursday and it was just starting to get busy. But this place should be busier. Final assessment. This place is reminiscent of PintHouse in Austin. Maybe they should ask them for some pizza advice. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit and I'll be back!
google avatar

Vicky G.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here to grab a couple local beers. I had The Irish 11 Red Ale (4/5) my husband had three glasses of Gunfighter (5/5). He tried a couple others he didn't like as much as Gunfighter. Although we didn't eat, they serve pizza and the building architecture has a garage type feel to it and has a mix of industrial decor style. We enjoyed making a pit stop here while touring Waco.
google avatar

Abby T.

Yelp
Pizza was freaking good af! I wasn't gonna drink at first because my bf is more of the beer guy & I don't like beer. Our server was super nice, recommended some other beverages aside from beer & I ended up falling in love with the raspberry mango cider. I loved the open space & all the options they had for games to play while you wait for your food or drink. I recommend the meme card game it is hilarious

John And Brynda M.

Yelp
Service for the block party we attended was great. Enjoyed all the beers and atmosphere!

chloe g.

Yelp
Southern roots is amazing! We just played at the battle of the bands, and got to try their amazing pizza made by Chef Ceejay!
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
This pizza changed my life. Lol. Unfortunately it's only seasonal. I hope they put it permanently on their menu. It's not an overstatement to say that this pizza is the best pizza in all of Waco and possibly central Texas. I've never had anything like it. Unbelievably good.

Oscar A.

Yelp
This place was amazing. The beer was cold and they had a variety. Customer service was super kind and friendly. Dorian was very attentive and had an amazing attitude. The pizza was delicious! We went twice during our stay in Waco.I'd definitely make a drive out here anytime just to enjoy some good beer, food and welcoming environment.
google avatar

Yelp
My son, my wife, and I went in not knowing what to expect. Greeted by the guy behind the bar (didn't catch name). He helped us choose a pizza (The Preacher & The Pig) that we all three loved! Then, he helped my son and I choose a beverage to our liking while my wife likes water with her pizza. We sat and chatted while looking around at the brew vats, jukebox, and rhe gorgeous Dalmatian another patron had brought with them. Not too soft not too loud music played from the jukebox. Lots of beers all brewed in house. When the pizza arrived, it was hot and fresh from the oven. This is now our go to for pizza! That was phenomenal! We all three loved it! Son and I loved our suggested beers too. We will now be frequent repeat customers! Get your family and yourself to Southern Roots asap!

Laura R.

Yelp
Wow what an amazing brewery in Waco! Visiting from CA, and this was the best brewery to come to. And best service from Ceejay! He was amazing with the best service, kindness, hospitality. Can't wait to come back when in TX!
google avatar

Lenny O.

Yelp
The Gunslinger IPA is outstanding. The pizza of the month was very good. The people I spoke with were all friendly and professional. Dog friendly. My only gripe is the service model. Order at the bar. Want more beer? Get back in line to order another beer at the bar. And while you're paying for your beer and food, suggestive tips are displayed on tablet used to pay. Outstanding brewpub, I'm just not a fan of their service model.
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
I made a quick stop to check it out. Had a nice Porter and an awesome hot pretzel. If they use the same dough for the pizzas then I'm sure I would have liked them as well. There were around 25 guys and 1 brave woman in the place, so I'm not sure if that is normal for this place or not. I decided not to bring my wife and two adult daughters later that night for dinner.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
Beer was great, reminded me a lot of Martin House from Fort Worth, Tx. The outdoor seating was nice. It was storming when we went, but were still able to sit outside and enjoy the weather.

Beth N.

Yelp
We've been in town for 2 weeks with our dog just enjoying Waco. Weather has been rainy and cool so places that welcome your dog are important to us. Southern Roots allows dogs inside their brewery. We're big fans of their cheesy bread, their pizza and the charcuterie board. They've made us feel incredibly welcome. They know our dog's name and our go to beers. High sanitation standards. Welcoming atmosphere. They also offer wine. Come visit. You won't be disappointed.
google avatar

JoAnn H.

Yelp
Throated fried would be absolutely killer, however. They undercooked them so much. I had the Holiday Siege. It's a winter warmer with cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Delicious. Hubby had the Gunfighter IPS. He said it's really good.

Al M.

Yelp
Pizza was great. No sweet tea?????? Beer was great. When went at lunch . The place was quiet. I am sure it is hopping at night

Mark G.

Yelp
Good beer but for Christ's sake, get some CO2. 1 minute to fill a glass will lose you business.
google avatar

Anita C.

Yelp
Never have I ordered chicken wings & gotten chicken in a ball. If you serve nuggets don't say wings. The service was bad. Only good part is that they have a lot of room.
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
Yummy beers & snacks! Pretzel with cheese was large. Garlic knots have lots of flavor. Cute outdoor area with yard games. Board games inside. Family & dog friendly. Nice stop!
google avatar

Eileen S.

Yelp
Great beer and pizza spot. Lots of games to play while you sip their delicious beer. I loved the guava sour, the Czech, white mocha, hefe, and the blonde. The service was greAt too.
google avatar

James K.

Yelp
Food was amazing. Love the taste of the amazing pizza crust and the fresh ingredients.
google avatar

Lucinda Y.

Yelp
This is a local favorite! Pizza is pretty good, nice selection of beer on tap, and my favorite part is the fun trivia they do on Tuesday evenings! This is a pretty good sized space with lots of tables and high tops so it's great for socialization if you've got a large group. Located downtown-- it's pretty easy to get to and they've got a parking lot on the side .
google avatar

Shaquantay J.

Yelp
Great Brewery!!! It's really open concept on the inside with board games, an air hockey game, and a few TVs. They have a chalk board with all their craft beers and I do believe they change flavors occasionally. They have a small kitchen with pizza, wings, and a few other items. We didn't eat but everything coming out of the kitchen looked yummy. They also have merch to purchase with their logo on it. The beer was tasty and my friend had a flight of beer. The bartender was very helpful with making suggestions on what beers to drink. Overall it's a fun place if you like a good brewery. Very family friendly also.
