These Restaurants and Bars Are Worth the Drive to Columbia | Eater Nashville

"Nestled within a historic building in the heart of downtown Columbia, Southern Tré Steakhouse has garnered a reputation for consistently satisfying steakhouse fare that’s both family-friendly and elevated thanks to the rich wood furnishings and brick walls. Premium steaks, salads, and rich pasta dishes line the menu alongside wine and cocktails (including a notable mule). When the weather is fine, be sure to reserve a table on the patio dining area." - Chanel Rene

My sister and me had a girls day out and stopped in for lunch. She had the pork chop plate with a loaded sweet potato and I had the steak with a loaded baked potato. The food was cooked as ordered and was seasoned very well - no need for sauces! Both plates were delicious. We both had salads before our entrees were delivered. Photos are attached. After lunch we both ordered desserts - my sister ordered milky caramel chocolate galaxy and I ordered the chocolate decadence! I forgot to take their pics but both were delicious and enough for two. I will definitely go back if anywhere near again.

Overstimulating environment with mediocre food at best. We walked in and the place was so loud it sounded like bees buzzing! It was busy and everyone is sweated in a central location. We were seated at our table within 20 minutes. We started off with potato skins. They were battered wedges that were fried and served with cheese on top. Definitely deep fried paradise! I chose the Ribeye Blackened with Roasted Broccoli and my wife chose the grilled Grouper with Roasted Broccoli. Salads were fresh. She had the Caesar Steak was overcooked and just kinda so-so. Grouper was tough and flavorless.

Visited for the first time on a Monday night. They were really busy. We sat in the bar area. The tumbleweeds are really good with the spicy ranch. Our salad came out right before our food. The NY strip was excellent, and I liked the bacon asparagus! We ate again for dinner and Lucy took fantastic care of us!

Great place to eat downtown in Columbia, Tennessee! Clean, roomy can be loud. Food was excellent, chicken tenders juicy not thickly coated and cooked perfect. Cheesy mac & cheese fries not overly salted. Bread is out standing! Not one to rate dips but they're honey mustard was surprisingly super good. Quit different than I'm used to. From what I heard this restaurant can be crowded and have a waiting list. We did not experience that on a Saturday early evening. Surely a place we'll revisit.

Google
The food was just not good, besides the bread and butter. I had steak tips 5/10. My husband had the brisket 1/10. It was basically leather. Thankfully we ordered chicken wings for an app which were okay. Better food at Puckett hands down. Not sure I’d be willing to try again. Service was just fine, place was busy. Normal amount of wait time.

Google
Good food and service. They have a really neat spot called whiskey Alley right out the side door of their indoor seating; definitely recommend. The alley has a historic feel and is a great spot for a nice meal and drink.

Great lunch menu. We had the fried green tomatoe blt and chicken bacon ranch wrap. Both were delicious and priced well. Super near atmosphere in downtown Columbia .

My boyfriend and I went last night for our anniversary dinner. First time trying this restaurant. The food was amazing cooked to perfection! Our server was just ok. We were seated at 8pm. They close at 9pm. We were almost done with our meal when I asked our server if we could order a slice of cheesecake at 8:45. Her response was “no, the kitchen is closed already for the night.” This is not acceptable for many reasons! 1- customers shouldn’t be told no. That’s a bad experience in general. 2- it’s not like we asked for another meal, just a slice of cheesecake to finish our anniversary meal. 3- the servers should be trained on something that easy if the kitchen was trying to close. Everything about this place was awesome except the staff doing all their closing procedures to get out of there as soon as they could by 9. I have many years of restaurant experience and the kitchens never quit until actual closing time. Many times I spent an hour after closing time to shut the kitchen down. Not sure if we will return here. If we do, it’ll be to go so I’m not told NO again by young staff.

Yelp
Went on a Monday at 7pm with a party of four people. The service was excellent as well as the food. Everything was cooked perfectly to order and arrived promptly and in order. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful (my receipt notes Makenna as the cashier, so I assume that was our waitress). The atmosphere/feel of the restaurant was pleasant and relaxing. I also noticed the tables were being thoroughly cleaned after a table was cleared. This was our first visit and we will return.

Yelp
Apologies for the lengthy post, but there was so much wrong with this, my rating is still brief. I'm a professionally trained chef so for Father's Day my family wanted to take me out to dinner. We decided to meet family here, so there was eight in the party. We ordered three appetizers, one came out, and the other two were absent after 30 minutes. She went to check on them, and in the meantime, the salads came out. I asked her to cancel the other two because we were now eating out salads. She returns 10 minutes later with the other two appetizers..... When the missing appetizers arrived, 10 minutes later the meals started coming..... randomly of course.... Three people were finishing their meal when meal four arrives.... 10 minutes later meals 5 and 6 come out. We are now an hour into this and meals 7 and 8 are still missing: one of them was a salad with grilled chicken. It never came. The other, was brought out as a completely different meal than what was ordered. The fettuccine was as dry as our server's attitude, the shrimp was from a box, the rest of the meals were lack-luster (well, the ones that actually were delivered). Try any other option but this option. The service and food combo is horrendous. Suck at one of these - not both. Here's the kicker; we were still charged the mandatory 20% because we had a party of 8. So I rewarded a server 20% for messing up every aspect of the meal- sounds fair..... DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME HERE!

Yelp
My girlfriend and I enjoy hitting this pretty dependable local spot when we're looking for someplace to eat with a large variety of items. The food is always cooked well, and I love their ranch dressing yummmmm. The wait staff has always been very friendly and professional and has known the menu well but been willing to ask questions if they didn't know what was up. I have one critique of ST - even since before COVID, they are very stingy with their seafood. My advice would be to lean in and throw a couple more shrimp or scallops on the dish. I think their standard is five. Of whatever it is. Five. Not a huge value there. A female behind the bar likes to vape back there. Doesn't bother me, but I could see how it could be a problem with the health dept or someone more judgy. The drinks have always been great! Overall, I really love Southern Tré. I just think they're missing that finishing touch to deliver on their price point.

Yelp
My wife and I had a date night here a couple weeks ago, and had a great time. The food took a little longer since there was a large dinner rush. We didn't mind, since we were enjoying our appetizers and drinking cocktails. The service was fantastic. Our server was very attentive and refilled our waters constantly. Sometimes I'll test how the service is and drink all the water and leave the cup empty to see how long it takes the server to refill. Couldn't get it past them! We had multiple different servers, assisting our table and other tables. They worked as a team and never left our cups empty. Overall definitely recommend for a night out on the town!

Yelp
nice atmosphere and good food. My steak was a little tough but other than that it was really good. make sure to order a loaf or half loaf of fresh baked sour dough bread.

Yelp
My wife and I went for a drive, and ended up in Columbia. We saw it was open, and decided to just walk in with 0 research. We weren't disappointed. The food, service, and ambiance was on point. Everything that they brought out was amazing, from the perfectly cooked steak to the appetizer. The service was quick and our server was extremely nice. And it really is one of those places that you can either dress up for, or just walk into. We will be remembering this, and plan to bring more people here.

Yelp
The food was great. Nice loaf was f bread to hold you until the meal gets there. Server AriAnna L. Was a fantastic server who kept checking in with us. The restaurant had that old town feel to it. Not fancy but unique. Could not have asked for more. I had the thickest Pork Chop ever and my date lived her Chicken breast. Great salads and drinks.

Yelp
Excellent burger and fries, along with yummy fish and chips for my husband - nice outdoor seating with brick wall ambiance. Friendly server who brought our dog water. Great lunch place!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
The food was not the star of the show unfortunately. It was just ok. Husband got the sliced brisket & I got the scallops. Our appetizer was stuffed mushrooms. The portions are small but the price isn't too bad. I really liked the ambiance of the building and the location is great. Our waiter was attentive & nice.

Yelp
The food was delicious my rice pilaf was cold I had the Salmon with crawfish & lump crab very delicious and 3 pieces asparagus with 3 pieces of bacon bits and a very small amount of cheese which was charged as an up charge side even though the menu states that it comes with 2 sides my waiter Luceeta was terrible she never checked on me another waiter replaced my hot rice pilaf when I questioned the up charge she got smart I saw her all of 3 times taking my order brought out the food & the check terrible customer service but the Salmon is recommended very good

Yelp
Food was absolutely amazing. Good portion sizes. Nice outdoor patio. BBQ Shrimp, whipped sweet potatoes side was to die for. Tumbleweed appetizers is a must have. Boneless wings - Bourbon Siracha and Mango Habanero were awesome! Sweet tea was excellent.

Deb C.

Yelp
This is a great local spot with good menu variety and great service. Happy hour is fun and the staff really wants to be sure your visit is memorable

Yelp
After 5 years, I returned to this place and was pleasantly surprised. Good service - reasonable menu options - good food. The salmon is very good - steak tips are the best value - char grilled Cesar salad very good - and the bread? Oh that bread! Good atmosphere. Kid friendly - and lots of menu options, not just steak. I'll be back.

Yelp
Great food and service. Restaurant had a great vibe. An unexpected find in an off the beaten path cute town. Local. Delicious. Friendly.

Yelp
Restaurant is very nicely decorated and the service was great. I loved the mimosa flight!! The food was not the best brunch food I've ever had. There could've been more flavor.
google avatar

Yelp
My husband and I ate here while vacationing. It is a great venue with a nice menu and delicious food. Our server was very knowledgeable concerning the menu. The evening we were there they were very busy. We had about a 40 minute wait. It might be a good idea to check to see if they accept reservations.
google avatar

Cindy N.

Yelp
The bread was amazing. Our waitress was very sweet. My husband enjoyed his very generously sized salad. My "marinated chicken breast" was probably the toughest least appealing piece of chicken I've ever been served in a restaurant. It could've been labeled chicken jerky. The restaurant is also so very loud you can't hear your partner over the noise.
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Good food, great service! I'd recommend to friends & family. Try it next time you're in town or want to take your date to a nice place

Yelp
Went for our anniversary last year cause we had never been. Excellent. Food was great. Service was solid. We will certainly be eating here again!
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
Pretty decent food! Good service both times I dinned. The ambiance is nice but just loud. My to go order was wrong so that was disappointing but the food was good.
google avatar

Yelp
Southern Tre is an awesome place for a night out. The food is amazing. The stuffed mushrooms are to die for. Next time I think I'll order two orders of those for my entree! The place is big enough for a large party and the wait time after ordering is not very long. It is a great Southern restaurant with the southern charm you would expect. Do yourself a favor and make it a point to eat there. You won't regret it!

Yelp
Cute steak house downtown Columbia. I enjoy the atmosphere and food. Great local steak house.

Yelp
We went on a Saturday night at a busy time. We were greeted with a friendly host team and seated right away. Our server took our drink order and brought us hot sour dough bread...scrumptious. I selected the Caesar Salad which was fresh and crisp with the dressing on the side. My date ordered a garden salad with fresh veggies and he ate it all plus the rest of mine that I could not finish...that's how good the salads were and we knew the best was yet to come. My entree was the chicken breast which was seasoned just right and moist. I usually don't get macaroni and cheese as a side - but this was a first. He ordered a pork chop which was the largest cut of pork I have seen for the price. He had a loaded baked potato (minus sour cream) and the bacon bits were not only fresh bacon, but large pieces. Our server was AriAnna - she is a gem, a true asset to the restaurant. Friendly, informative, kept an eye on our drinks/needs and yet not over bearing. I truly suggest Southern Tre Steakhouse for a nice dinner out or a private function. It has a cute and fun atmosphere for families and couples. The bar looked nice too.

Yelp
This saddens me, Southern Tre has so much potential....unfortunately. I have avoided this place for the past few years, my first instincts were correct, this place is terrible. I already knew better than to order a steak, so I thought hopefully fish and chips were safe, I was wrong. The fish was overbattered and the cole slaw was off, brown actually. Don't get me started on the hush puppies, tasted like they were deep fried in shoe leather and motor oil. Our server tried to push a well done burger on us, it was ordered medium well and guess what....1/2 of the burger was cooked a perfect medium, the other half was well done. I did point this out to our server and she was as mystified as we were, offered no adjustment for this frozen ill-prepared patty. The wedge salad remains the only thing I can recommend on the menu, get that and you'll be happy. OK now this one..... we ordered a bottle of Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc, our server countered with a Bogle, said they were out of the Crawford. OK well I know for a fact there is a 40% differential between the two in retail, so our server relented and promised a discount over the $38 price listed on their "wine list." When the check arrived I was charged $37 so I asked for the manager. Turns out the Crawford is NOW $45, not $38 so the discount was based on the new price. By now I was as miffed and confused as you are if you are still reading this novel so after much deliberation they presented a $30 price for the wine and offered a plastic bag to take the remainder of the bottle home... that was the highlight of the evening.

Yelp
When the waitress tells you three main dishes on the menu not to order ... this is probably not the place to eat. So the good... the 1/2 loaf of bread was delicious. I ordered shrimp and baked potato with asparagus with bacon - hold the cheese. My mom ordered the chopped steak with sautéed onions, baked potato with a Cesar salad. After having our order in for a few minutes, the waitress says they are out of baked potatoes- at a steakhouse on Fathers Day. The manager said they only cooked 80 potatoes and there were other options. Yes other options but not what we wanted. I settled on rice pilaf that was inedible! Think gummy with hard brown rice. The salad was small but with too much cheese. My shrimp was good but asparagus was over cooked with no crunch to them. My mom's chopped steak was ordered medium but came well down. To be honest, this was not steakhouse quality. It was my first and last visit. However, the waitress was friendly and honest. She also warned us not to do the mac and cheese (the main dishes she said to avoid are the chicken parmigiana, pork chop, and the spaghetti.). I say avoid the whole place!

Anna W.

Yelp
Love Southern Tre! The menu offers a little bit of everything and the service is great. We enjoy sitting in the dining area for a quieter evening, however the atmosphere in the bar area is great for spending a fun evening with friends. Laura is an awesome bartender!

Diane C.

Yelp
Fried green tomatoes and stuffed mushrooms were the best I've ever tasted! Fantastic converted warehouse ambiance one block off the courthouse square and exceptionally friendly service. We'll be back!

M H.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here on a whim as we drove through town. Best decision!!! He is on keto and was able to enjoy a big, very tasty, diet-friendly meal. The salads were great but the house vinaigrette dressing was amazing. Meat was flavorful and large portioned. Clean. Great atmosphere. Wonderful friendly staff. Definitely will be back- even if it's off the beaten path.
google avatar

Jacquelyn M.

Yelp
While the service and ambiance are excellent I have been disappointed in the food all three times I've eaten here.
google avatar

Robert W.

Yelp
Great steak place in the center of Columbia Tennessee. Very accommodating for our large party and the food was delicious.
google avatar

Meredith B.

Yelp
Stopped here while passing through Columbia and enjoyed lunch here! It was recommended to me by the owner of a store down the street. He recommended the salad, and I definitely agree! I got the wedge salad without bacon and it was delicious with their spicy ranch (made in house)! All of our meals were generous portions and very very fresh! Definitely check this place out!
google avatar

Kimberly M.

Yelp
If you are still looking for masks and COVID safety practices, this might not be the place for you. But the menu is robust, and I haven't had a bad meal yet here. The place is also roomy and can accommodate big parties for celebrations. Be sure to ask what the Drink of the Day is. I love the Fried Green Tomatoes and the Salmon topped with Etoufee is very delicious. The Wedge Salad is huge so be sure to share it with someone. Wine, beer on tap, and traditional cocktails are all available. Service is great, and you can come casual or a little dressed up. Oh and get the Peanut Butter Cake. Trust me.

Bowie P.

Yelp
Never had a bad meal here. Comfortable seating, friendly service, great food.. Top notch burgers and steaks.
google avatar

Traci C.

Yelp
Perfect location for lunch or dinner while strolling downtown Columbia. Lots of cool shops near by, with street parking options. The food and service were both fantastic. The locals recommended this place to us, so now I'm saying you should try it out!

Ashley S.

Yelp
Good food, service is nice, pretty building. The menu is big so there's something for everyone. We had the stuffed mushrooms which were okay. the burger was cooked nicely. The staff are helpful and quick.

Ray J.

Yelp
Food is great. Service is better. Great atmosphere and love Muletown! Thanks Luceela!

Melinda Y.

Yelp
Food constantly good and generous portions. Service has been very good and we love the ambiance of the old historic brick building . We'll definitely be returning

Robin B.

Yelp
This was our third time having dinner there. The first two times were pretty good, and it was just my husband and myself. This time there were five of us. It was pretty embarrassing that the food was so sub-par since we were there with family visiting from out of state and we recommended going there. We all ordered something different off the menu, including a pasta dish, a salad, steak and Chicken Parmesan. No one in our party liked their food. Adjectives I would use include bland, room temperature, undercooked. I don't know if the cooks all just quit and in desperation management hired people walking by on the street, but there was no quality in this meal. If you're going to call yourself a "steakhouse", serve some decent food. Only positive thing I have to say is that our server was very sweet, and the appetizers were good. However, won't go back.
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
The atmosphere was cozy. The staff was nice and helpful. The food was delicious. Large portions. Great, southern food. We were hungry and forgot to take pictures of the food to share but if you're willing to take my word for it, it's worth a stop in this cute little town.
google avatar

Tina P.

Yelp
Love the food and service! We go there often. The Bartenders are so good and make you so comfortable. If you want an ice cold draft beer, there is no better place to go. The hors d'oeuvres are so delicious. The food is just amazing! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
It was about 1:15 when we stopped in for lunch. Seated quickly and staff was friendly. There is no portion of the menu for lunch but the is a chalk board at the entrance with the lunch specials. Ordered the bolognese and it was brought to us within 10 minutes. Food was hot and delicious. Will definitely return

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while. Every time that I am in downtown Columbia I see the adorable outdoor patio and say I need to go here. Finally came! We had a friend in town and decided to finally try Southern Tre! We came on a Saturday night at peak time and were given an hour wait, so we hopped across the street to a tap room and enjoyed a beer. Our server was very on top things, but not super friendly! I got the Old Fashioned to start off. It was a bit underwhelming, but still okay. I got the 6oz Sirloin Steak with a side of Asparagus and a Caesar Salad! The Asparagus was good, but I wish it was cooked a little more (just my personal taste). The Salad was great! Just wish their side salads was a little bigger. The Sirloin was tasty, but overcooked. I ordered Medium Well because I like it mostly cooked with a little pink and usually can expect it to be pretty spot on at a steakhouse! This steak was very well done. Should have ordered it Medium! Overall a decent experience!
google avatar

Elijah C.

Yelp
It has gone downhill since we ate there last. Sad. Steak was grisly and not cooked to order. Salad was ok though. Colombia has lots new restaurants. I guess they can't keep up. :(
google avatar

Allison K.

Yelp
The salmon is the best meal. Along with the Hen salad. Service to quick. Only the bar gets backed up sometimes. Always clean and well stocked.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
No complaints on staff or ambiance. The Buffalo chicken dip app was delicious. No one had a great entree. Fish basket was average as were tenders. Brisket was dry and dull. Chicken parmigiana was not good. It was a glorified tender and tasted burnt. The noodles were over cooked was very watery in the bottom. Sauce was jar at best. We did like the Caesar sides ok but glad the appetizer was filling!!!
google avatar

Jen J.

Yelp
Wee like this place, but as someone who is gluten free it's tough. Huevos rancheros made with flour tortillas ( usually it's safe- corn), and no fun dishes made without flour. If they had even one or two gluten free options this would be a 5 star.

Paxton S.

Yelp
service was okay i understand they were busy. I got brisket that cost $27 food was cold brisket didn't taste right, asparagus cold not cooked right cheese was hard not melted.
google avatar

K T.

Yelp
I came in on a Tuesday afternoon around 3:30. Not peak time by any means. First, I love the room. It has a rustic feel and prepares you for steak. My server, Lexi was fantastic. She gave me her personal recommendations and walked me through the menu. I ended up ordering the 14oz ribeye and mac and cheese (because mac and cheese is a vegetable in the south) and a side salad. The salad was great, not too small, not too large, and fresh ingredients (although I did fill up on bread...) Steak was cooked to perfection. Nothing to add. No steak sauce required. The meat spoke for itself. Delicious. The mac and cheese was also superb. It was served in a heated container that kept it warm for the duration of the meal. A very nice touch since it was alway piping hot every time I came back to it. Finally, the key lime pie for dessert was also amazing. It looked like it was either made fresh in-house or from a local bakery. Either way, it was delicious. Final thought: eat here. Bring a date. Bring your family. Bring your in-laws. Bring your boss. Just come here and eat. I love patronizing restaurants that take pride in their work. This place is one of those places. From the hostess, the waitress and final product (the food), I got the feeling that they love what they do here. We can all benefit from this.

Madeline G.

Yelp
We came here for brunch and it was truly terrible. The tall blonde hostess and short brunette hostess were very unwelcoming and not accommodating at all. Our table was ready but they wouldn't seat us until the entire party arrived so instead we were left to block the entrance with majority of our group and a stroller because there was no room in the waiting area. When we were seated, we requested two high chairs. They had one high chair and one for a bar height table. I've never felt more unwelcome in public with my son. Our meals were bad and so unappetizing to see. We ordered avocado toast - the avocado was left under the heater and looked like poop when it was put on the table. The Breakfast bruschetta is tomato and feta mush, with soggy bread on the side. I've had pleasant dinners here before but this experience was so bad I don't want to bring my family back ever again.
