The 21 Best Restaurants In The North Fork - Long Island - The Infatuation

"You don’t have to schlep a whole fish home from Southold Fish Market just to get some fresh seafood—the kitchen does a great spread of apps like shrimp cocktail and Long Island clams and oysters, along with fried seafood baskets and cod sandwiches. They close at 6:30pm most nights, so it’s great for lunch or an early dinner where you can bring a round of beers outside to picnic tables that are lined with crushed clam shells. They also have cornhole, lots of parking, and it’s only a short ride from Greenport." - sal vaglica

We were absolutely stunned by how good the food was at Southold Fish Market! Every bite was fresh and flavorful—true coastal perfection. The place is full of character, with that authentic seaside charm that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a local treasure. The staff were super friendly and welcoming, adding to the warm, laid-back vibe. If you’re anywhere near Southold, do yourself a favor and stop by—this spot is a gem!

Amazing selection of fresh fish and seafood, as well as prepared foods. You can also eat there.

Came to this place super hungry on an early October Saturday in the late afternoon. It was busy but crowded. Easily found an open seat both indoors or outside on the picnic tables. I got the cold $31 lobster roll with fries. It was very good. Big chunks of lobster. Mayo. Celery. And the Cole slaw was really nice too. Better than the fries, which were better than average. Bar with local beer and wine options. Bloody Mary looked ridiculous with shrimp, etc. Good, fresh seafood here.

Incredible seafood; lobster rolls, shrimps, crab, fish, scallops. Everything is really tasty!

Google
Good Food, just not the best I have had, and I have eaten seafood extensively up and down the East Coast. Food: Our adventure off-season spared us the agony of long queues, which was a relief. The Warm Lobster Roll was brimming with succulent lobster, albeit a tad steeply priced at $33. The coleslaw was a pleasant surprise with its delightful hint of pineapple. However, the fresh-cut French Fries missed the mark - if you're going fresh, make 'em crispy! And yes it is possible with the right potatoes and process. The Local Clam Basket delivered on freshness, though some clams were a bit gummy from the breading, and yes, those fries again! The Onion Rings were tasty, but $12 for a side? Pricing puzzled me a bit, despite understanding the rising costs. Service: Efficient, yes. Memorable? Not particularly. Counter service kept things moving, but there were no standout moments—positive or negative. Vibe: Picture a laid-back coastal spot, clean and comfy but lacking that extra oomph. It's not exactly a destination in itself, but it serves its purpose without any major hiccups. So there you have it—a culinary escapade with highs, lows, and everything in between. If I were invited to go, I wouldn't turn it down, just not sure I would make a special trip.

The first time we went to the Southold Fish Market, we were going to order fish tacos and salads and eat at one of their outdoor picnic tables but we were told the wait for our lunch would be an hour so we left. The next time we wanted to eat there, we called and placed our order 45 minutes in advance which is what I’d recommend you do, especially on weekends! Every thing we ordered was delicious!! However most people who were waiting on a very long line were not dissuaded when someone announced the wait time for food would be at least fifty minutes! We were thrilled to walk in and go to the “ pick up orders” , pay and walk out with our fabulous lunches!

Google
Wow, wow, wow! Amazing food and fish. So incredibly fresh. Ordered the seafood wrap and grilled mahi tacos to split between the 2 of us and it did not disappoint. Everything was great from the coleslaw to the tomatoes on the salad. I wish I took pictures (I usually do but was so hungry, they were gone by the time I remembered!) I did take pictures of their beautiful selection of fish. Oh, and their very friendly helpful and patient staff was just as great!

Google
The food was very good except for the New England clam chowder which was too thick and tasted more like potato chowder. Clean and friendly atmosphere but a bit cool inside. The oysters were beautifully presented and delicious. We didn't mind the high prices because the fish was so good but please spend some of it on heat and wine. PS We will be back for the fish and another opinion on everything else.

Yelp
Southhold Fish Market : Amazing Place, the host lead us through the line provided us with a menu, arranged for a seat indoors with our service dog! Wow what an amazing experience, she was very friendly elder lady. Thank you for your kindness, great service and amazing prices, far better than Sag Harbors Over priced Le Bilboquet, a 1 Star dump of a restaurant. Defiantly stay on the North Shore and make this amazing dog friendly South hold Fish Market a stop off on your way to Green Port! ~ Cowboy

Yelp
Everything fresh and delicious! They close early so don't wait until the last minute.

Yelp
Fantastic! This place is awesome. Menu is great, lots of options. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Outdoor seating is a major plus. Like a few places in the area they have grilled oysters. Until today I have not tried them. Couldn't decide which to get, fresh or grilled so figured just do both. Best decision ever! Fact that they have local oysters at a reasonable price is awesome. Prior to this stopped at a spot just 7min away and they were charging $28 for half dozen grilled. Here price tag was about $16. That's a big difference. Flavors were on point. The shucking of the raw oysters was perfect. Not even a scrap of shell and the meats detached but the juices still in the shell. Grilled oysters no shell but meats still attached but whatever just delicious. Sat outside with the dog in a breezy day but weather was perfect. When placing the order they warned it's about a 25min wait. Wait was close to that but absolutely worth it. Honestly who needs the Hampton and those fancy places when you have something like this!

Yelp
I loved my visit to the Southold Fish Market today! It was a beautiful day so we grabbed a quick bite and sat outside. I got mozzarella sticks and fries and was awed at all the fresh fish they had for sale inside! The woman at the counter was so sweet and I can tell why this spot is so popular among the locals. Wish this spot was closer, I'd come way more often!

Yelp
Freshly battered corn fritters. Large lobster portions, meaty lobster rolls. Not your table service type of place since it's both a market and restaurant, you get a buzzer for when your food is ready for pick up. Cute place with indoor and outdoor dining like you're enjoying a lobster roll in Maine. You can grab fresh seafood for dinner while having lunch there earlier in the day. Will definitely be back to try other items from the menu and seafood to grill.

Yelp
Excellent. Fresh and absolutely delicious. My favorite summer spot to go to when out on the north fork!

Yelp
The black sea bass I bought at the market today was full of scales and bones -- pretty much inedible and a real disappointment.. I won't go back.

Yelp
This is a very nice fish market where you can purchase fresh fish or prepared meals . On the day I came it was very busy and we had to wait for a table as there is limited seating inside . There are several picnic tables outside which is great when the weather is nice . Everyone was polite and welcoming. Everything we ordered for lunch was so delicious and fresh . We shared the Sesame Seared Tuna Tacos and the Bay Scallop basket both with a choice of fries or salad . We got the salad and replaced fries with onion rings . The tacos were so good and tasty with the seaweed , shredded cabbage and a delicious sesame ginger sauce . The Bay Scallops were sweet and tender and not at all oily , as were the delicious crispy onion rings. This is definitely a great place to stop in for a delicious meal !

Yelp
Incredible selections of fresh fish, shellfish, prepared foods and soups. Zach is always super helpful with service. We feel so lucky to have such a top-notch fish monger so close to Greenport.

Yelp
The place is very authentic with items are super fresh! The cashier was super friendly and helpful. The warm lobster roll was a bit dry and overpriced. I expected better. The fries believe it or not were the best item ordered, fresh, crisp and delicious! Outside sitting is the way to go.

Yelp
Quality control has slipped and customer service/care is lacking. This has been a goto for me for years but this season my last two visits i wound up with a spoiled piece of $20 swordfish and now i get home and 4 of my 18 little necks were broken yesterday. I'll drive the extra 10 mins to Brauns from now on.

Yelp
I don't give 5 stars often, but the quality, value, happy atmosphere, and quantity was wonderful. This is a dying type of restaurant because it's also a great fish store. No beer, brown paper table 'cloths', sturdy paper plates, no built in service tip (so bring cash and be generous! We're both soft-shell pisser clams and oyster lovers, driven from our passion, passers elsewhere at $1 each, NO. Well, we ordered steamers and I'm guessing they were maybe 50¢ each, smaller, which means also sweeter. My wife had shrimp tacos, fine, huge salad and good coleslaw. I lucked out on a special 8 oz Swordfish (grilled pink interior at my request)) ciabatta sandwich with lettuce and excellent tomato, and a huge mound of hand cut french fries, some of which came home. So good, I can add some wishes. I assume you're BYOB, as a beer would be nice? Your pissers should be soaked longer, as they were quite sandy. I love drinking the broth, particularly since your butter is seasoned. Not possible in the small plastic cups. Check out what Sophies does! Bigger plastic is needed. We kept catching you on Tuesdays when you're closed, now we know better!

Yelp
Get fish and chips - you won't be disappointed. Fish is fresh, batter is thick, a perfect blend of chewy and crunchy, and comes out piping hot. Comes with delicious tartar sauce not pictured too. Just don't eat too fast or you'll burn your mouth like me! Place is clearly a local favorite - was packed and half of it is a seafood market. Kinda weird to have that near prepared food but it didn't bother us. Super casual, pay at the counter. We also ordered a dozen oysters on the half shell, nothing wrong but forgettable.

Yelp
A restaurant and fish market in the same building. Was ok though, place was clean. Menu was behind the counter where we ordered and then was given a buzzer. Very casual. The lady who took our order was very friendly. She mentioned the hour-wait for food (bec so many people that Saturday) and the food did come in an hour. Bisque and raw oysters came out faster though. Raw oysters are $20/dozen - fresh. Some local options up to $34/dozen. Seafood bisque was a bit thick for me, reminded me more of a pasta sauce. Fish and chips $16 were very lightly tempura-battered which I liked (another option for $1 more is breaded fish). Fries were a little soggy. Warm lobster roll with fries was delicious but we've had similar or better at other places. Fried oyster po boy had a lot of oysters but oyster taste is not for me. Each order came with coleslaw. Ample parking and outdoor seating, under umbrellas. Some tables inside. A small thing but the ice in a small cooler was very much appreciated since we went at lunchtime and weather was warm.
google avatar

Rohini G.

Yelp
Great market and prepared food. Tried the oyster basket and fish and chips. The batter on the fish and chips was light but less crispy. The fish was very fresh. The oysters were also lightly breaded and fried and the salad was very fresh. The hard cider they served was also very smooth and light. Would come back and recommend to anyone visiting the north fork!

Yelp
Our food took 40 minutes to come out which was 4 different meals. However it was a busy day so I don't blame the restaurant. As I sat down a random cat came up to me looking for someone to get pets from. I'm guessing it is there for rodent control but either way it made me happy. They have local papers available as well as fish, fish products, and ingredients to purchase. The food was not too great but it wasn't bad. We fed some leftover fish to the cat. The outside seating area is nice and there are many parking spaces available. It's also right next to the ferry to shelter island so you can get it and go! We also got lobster which was great and tons leftovers for different recipes.

Debbie R.

Yelp
Best fresh fish on Long Island. Friendly staff. They always took special care of my stepdad John PONTINO who was a regular customer. I was also until I moved upstate New York but whenever I'm in town SOUTHOLD fish market is first on list.

Yelp
Outrageously good food! Fresh and varied. The owner is incredibly accessible and helpful. The take out is truly amazing - fresh tuna salad not to be missed!

Yelp
One of my favorite spots sometimes I drive from the city just to go with there...................

Yelp
Large selection of various seafood entrees. Very fresh! Will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Away from the village along 25 you'll find a gem of a market/restaurant. The fresh fish looked stunning We ordered a variety of local Oysters and clams. Honestly the best raw clams we have ever had. You know they came right out of the water. They were sweet and firm. Fairly reasonable for the area, 6 for $8 (without being a happy hour price). The Manhattan clam chowder was freshly made with chunks of veggies and potatoes. If we ever get back to the North Fork we will for sure visit again.
google avatar

Gisele V.

Yelp
Everything we go to greenport, this is our spot for lunch. Huge menu selection, nice beers and wine. Highly recommend to spot and great a bite.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best calamari I've ever had. Also the salmon was very good. Great little shop for fresh seafood!
google avatar

Phil H.

Yelp
Terrific spot for off the boat, right out of the ocean, fresh seafood to eat on site or take home to prepare later. Picnic tables outside on the grounds to enjoy your feast. You can have your feast made there eat, or they have many items in the freezers to take home for later. There is a bar inside and seating for when the Covid restrictions are finally over. Menu of items offered on the chalkboards including daily specials. Affordable prices for seafood. Ice bins with loads of the catch of the day and prices listed. Put in your order and they give you a buzzer to notify you when it's ready. Everything we had was delicious. Some of the freshest shrimp I ever ate!
google avatar

Sumi K.

Yelp
Seafood market and restaurant in Southold, NY We had lobster roll with salad ($32) and fried oysters ($16) with french fries. We ordered the food and waited about 20minutes for buzzer to ring to pick up our food. The lobster roll was good without too much mayo and salad was fresh but it was on a regular hot dog bun. The fried oyster and french fries were little soggy and not much oysters.
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
Call ahead! The secret is out on this delicious spot, so look them up online, check the menu and call your order in to save yourself an hour plus on a weekend. Clam strips and lobster rolls for everyone and are so delicious, best in the area. Great little country market just down the street for amazing pies for dessert. A must visit for amazing seafood when on the north fork.
google avatar

Christina V.

Yelp
Great spot to grab a beer and some amazing fresh seafood. Nice seating outside and quite spacious and less busy towards the back. Fish and chips, tuna steak with ginger sauce and the lobster roll are a hit. Also really good to get fish to go and cook at home. Great prices.

James N.

Yelp
This lively spot is a Home Run -- crushing all bases: Fresh and Delicious, Fair and Reasonable, Friendly and Cheerful, Consistent and Comprehensive. I've purchased fish at the market to grill at home (always a winner!), and I've enjoyed the dine-in experience thoroughly every visit, including oysters / clams on the half-shell, the fish tacos, shrimp tacos, bay scallops -- you name it -- and of course the Grand Slam selection of cold beers. The prevailing vibe is casual, lively, clean. I can say truly I have never tasted seafood as fresh nor as perfectly prepared and presented to Focus On The Fish! The staff clearly love their jobs, whether in the market section of the business, at the bar, or at the food order/cashier station. Always enthusiastic and delighted to please. Thank you Southold Fish Market.

Yelp
Love this a lot always good atmosphere, flavors are good , fresh seafood , prices aren't that bad . Parents and sister loved it . Alcohol and bar is a plus , ans the fresh seafood .

Yelp
The food here is DELICIOUS! Every time I come to the north fork, I try to eat somewhere new, but then I always end up at Southold Fish Market. The seafood here is incredibly fresh, which makes it taste amazing! I recommend the scallops! Both the bay and sea scallops are so yummy with fries with garlic aioli, tarter, and their cocktail sauce. YUMMY! My family has also tried the fish platter, the fish Reuben and the stuffed fish, which they have all reported as delicious but every time I go there I'm getting my scallops because I haven't tasted scallops this good anywhere else! There's a seating area outside and inside as well as a very clean bathroom. Enjoy!

Yelp
Came here specifically for their lobster roll, which was listed as one of the best on LI on a recent 2020 news article. They have both hot and cold, and I got the cold. The wait is a little lengthy, but come prepared and it goes by quick. There are tons of outdoor picnic tables on either side of the driveway. Place your order, wait outside and they will announce your name on their outdoor speaker system. The lobster roll comes with lettuce tomato, coleslaw, and your choice of salad or fries. The bun should have been toasted/buttered. But the lobster was very good and very fresh, with big chunks and not chopped up. My husband had the fried oyster platter, which I thought was great. The breading was seasoned perfectly and each oyster was juicy and tender. Pass on the baked clams. I would come back and try the hot lobster roll and definitely get the oysters again.
google avatar

Rachael T.

Yelp
Got the lobster roll and it was fantastic! They gave you a nice amount of lobster too. Was such a cute little place with picnic tables outside
google avatar

Alden G.

Yelp
Popular spot! Great seafood. Shrimp. Oysters. Dine in or sit outside. Large parking lot.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
I had high expectations for this place! However, I think we came at a bad time because they were closing the kitchen early at 4:30pm on a Saturday for a private party. We came around 4pm and we were told we had to wait at least an hour to get our food. The oysters and clams were fresh but aren't on the top of my list. We had high expectations on the special of the day lobster tots but the lobster chunks were bland and didn't make any enhancement to the tots. We also got the shrimp po boy sandwich, grilled salmon, fish tacos and fish and chips. The best entree we got was the grilled salmon. The skin was crispy but the salmon itself was flaky and perfectly cooked! Overall, the food was just okay but they have a great outdoor dining area! Maybe we missed out on ordering the good things on this menu for it to have such high ratings on yelp

Molly R.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD!! Seriously the service is amazing here... they truly care about the food they serve and it's so refreshing!
google avatar

Howard S.

Yelp
This was once only a great fish market with limited to go prepared seafood menu items...now it is a seafood restaurant with a small fish market. The fish is very fresh. No doubt about it! And the selection is pretty good on most days. Local items are aways the best. The organization of the place and the service is wanting. Total chaos. Not enough parking spaces. Once inside - No system what so ever. Stressed out and unfriendly workers. You ask for a pound of Cod, they cut you a pound and a quarter. And charge you for the extra quarter. Typical. Gotta keep your eyes open! Sometimes it just isn't worth it...
google avatar

Christine A.

Yelp
Lovel place to stop for some mid-day munchies in between wineries. Everything is super fresh. Can buy uncooked goods to take home or full cooked meals to your liking. I personally tried the clam strips, french fries, fried tacos, and Rhode Island clam chowder. All the fried items came out super crispy but not oily. And their tartar sauce was screaming with a unique flavor but really yummy and complimented the food. Chowder was true to its name with a clear broth, but still tons of clam flavor. Friends I was with ordered the grilled shrimp tacos which looked absolutely delicious as well. Perfect stop where you can sit outside on the picnic tables to enjoy your food and even get a beer or margarita if you so choose. Lovely water station as well inside if you'd prefer not to wait on line to get a tap water. Next time I'll for sure get a few clams on the half and a lobster roll.

Yelp
Dear Southold Fish Market, While I'm sure you appreciated Kristin S. telling you how fish and chips should be, I can tell you with over twenty years of first hand experience, that you do not specialize in sog. My cousins and I used to sit outside your fish shack at the old location down the street, stuffing our faces with tartar sauce and not-so soggy cod. We named our first band after your coleslaw and although we never made it past our basement, your coleslaw is definitely still rocking. There are so many things to love about your establishment. But as crunchy and delicious as your fish and chips are, what I still love most is seeing a beautiful family coming together to bring joy to their community. So please, keep specializing in the sog. Because I have and will always be about it. All the best in the name of food. - Yelpman

Yelp
This is literally the best seafood place I've ever ate at. No one compares. I literally crave SFM. They also have delicious specials all the time. Since this is an update, I can say that the people at the front definitely have changed their attitudes. We always enjoy coming here and thank you SFM for always putting out TOP QUALITY food.
google avatar

Martha L.

Yelp
Great selection and very well informed staff. Everything is fresh and everyone is friendly too. Definitely stop here. Bonus, if you don't want to cook it, they do it to stay or go around the back.

Joey D.

Yelp
Such an amazing fish market. The selection of fresh fish beautifully organized is impressive. They also have a refrigerated and freezer section full of all kinds of seafood takeout. Can't say enough about the staff, so helpful and polite. They also have a section where you can order from an extensive menu and then eat outside on picnic tables. All in all a great experience, will be back.

Brenda F.

Yelp
I have been here twice now and absolutely love it. The first time I had a hot lunch here and it was so delicious. The second time I picked up scallops and baked clams to take home, it was super fresh. A guy on line overheard me tell my friend to get baked clams ,and he recommended to get the seafood stuffies baked clams. Shout out to that guy because those were at of this world delicious. Every time I go out to the north fork I plan on stopping by to pick up some fresh seafood for dinner. Definitely the best fish market on the island.

Mike H.

Yelp
The food was fresh and delicious. My wife and I sat and ate We purchased soup and baked clams to go for later also. This was our first time here but we'll be returning for sure.
google avatar

Brittain M.

Yelp
Love this place. Lines can be long on nice summer days but some of the best fried seafood around. We try to hit this place when on the north fork.

Jack B.

Yelp
Food is amazing. The service is excellent. The Ambience is splendid. Every time I come to this restaurant I immediately become so happy!
google avatar

Tonia G.

Yelp
I've been coming here seven years or so. Charlie & his crew are such good people. Great relationships with local fisherman provide the best seafood you could dream of having. Arrive at around 10am after all the fisherman have dropped off their catch and everything is clean, iced & ready for you. Great lobsters, feisty blue crabs and seriously whatever you need. If they don't have it in stock Charlie will do his best to get what you want. The prepared foods are excellent; fantastic variety & all very well prepared. This place hardly needs another review; it fully speaks for itself.
google avatar

Faiza K.

Yelp
If its your first time here, things can get a bit confusing. There's a separate side entrance for cooked and order ahead food, and the front entrance is for raw fish and cold items. I'd suggest ordering ahead, as the food is made to order and you'll be waiting atleast a half an hr for it. Also, the pandemic is basically over for the people on the island, so if you're still being cautious like I am, or are immuncompromised, I'd suggest you mask up, because most people working here, and visiting are not. The staff is nice, the food is yummy, and the prices are consistent with the rest of northfork. We stop here for our shrimp cocktail fix whenever we visit. I'd suggest visiting earlier than later because things do run out. There are lots of self serve picnic tables outside for you to enjoy your lunch.
google avatar

Alexandra L.

Yelp
The Quick: Literally off the boat seafood! Highly recommend if you're going to pick up something to cook at home. They have oysters and basically anything else you could want. Enjoy
