Best Pizza Slices in Austin | Eater Austin

"The slices are huge from all three spots of the pizzeria, one in Zilker and the others in Holly and far south Austin. The lunch special is a slice, a small salad, and a soda for $11. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are typically indoor and outdoor dine-in areas." - Erin Russell

I’ve been eating at the SoCo location for years and have been to this one a few times since that one closed. Today was the worst experience I’ve ever had with them. I ordered online and picked up at the time it said it would be ready. The guy looked confused and said he didn’t have an order for me and asked if I ordered to the wrong location and laughed like he knew I did. I said no and showed him my order. He said he missed it because he was talking to his boss? Not a great look if your boss keeps you from doing your job. He said come back in 15 minutes. I knew it wouldn’t be ready but I came back anyway. He was again talking to his boss and then said he needed to help me so they paused. He then went over and put my pizza that had been sitting there uncooked into the oven! I attached photos because the pizza isn’t even covered in cheese and all of the pizza rolls are very different sizes. The employee also asked his boss to put butter on the rolls and he looked confused and didn’t find the butter or put it on. Finally they hand me my food and I asked if the 2 ranches I paid for are in the box. He said yes and then said oh actually let me grab the second one. Won’t be going back here.

Google
Ordered a simple large pie for delivery which was jokingly $40. Only had one add on(bacon) which they forgot to add. Delivery was 10 min later than the hour long quote. It was a cold day and the pizza was not in a warming bag so it was ice cold when delivered. Called 2 phone numbers I found online and they both didn’t work. Reached out via their email support with no response. Gave it 2 weeks before this review to see if they would respond…Don’t eat here.

Google
Expensive and terrible. Paid $8 for a lame slice of pizza that looked like it was a couple days old. Came out burnt too.

Google
I placed an order- it says you’re open, and that my order is ready. But the doors are locked and no one is there. I spent over 30 dollars, and an extra 6 on my Uber to take me by there before going home after a 12 hour shift. This is the second time something like this has happened while trying to order from here, and it’s insanely frustrating. I want my money back, this really isn’t okay :((( the last time, the employees were just sitting on their phones and had to make my order right then instead of it being ready, when I came by ten minutes after the expected time. I had to pay the uber extra so he would stay and wait for me, but I didn’t say anything about it because I assumed this was a one off issue and simple mistake. I’m very not happy if you can’t tell 😭

Google
For week day lunch we got tasty pizza (Athena, Pepperoni King, and cheese). I enjoyed the thinner crust. Great rose, beer, and Maine Root soft drinks. They have a nice shaded patio area to sit and enjoy. Pinball machine inside. The fact that it's connected to a gas station enhances the cool vibes.

Google
THE most difficult place to order pizza from ever. Never open. Phone number is disabled. Ordering online never works. I used to love this place but I give up.

Lauren S

Google
Solid pizza, great staff and really comfy stools outside. Plus a pinball machine! Indoor and outdoor dining, with shade. It’s not my favorite style of pizza, it’s a thinner, crispy crust and that’s simply a matter of different pizza styles. Interestingly there’s no outdoor garbage can, but there is one inside.

Google
Ordered for the first time for delivery. Normal wait time per usual for Austin. The pizza was delicious plus the side cesar salad was fresh. The dressing was spot on for a pizza place. Our new spot for future orders. Great job folks!

Yelp
Is Southside Flying Pizza the best pizza I've ever had? No. Do I still love it? Yes. Pizza's are always good, the garlic knots are straight up delicious, and their cheesecake is excellent. This is my go to midweek pizza place. Delivery is great too. Their driver is a star.

Yelp
Came to Southside after a nice trip to a Barton and didn't disappoint. Luis took care of us as he does his own grandkids, opening the business to send them to school. The food was so good and made to order. He recommended all different pizzas and gave us recommendations for the next time. A friendly neighborhood pizza place with the best guy running it.

Yelp
We ordered $175 of pizza for takeout. They only made four of the six pizzas (that weren't even correct) and were told to wait in the car for those four pizzas to be made when it was already 45 minutes behind schedule. We have tried contacting for a refund, but SFP does not pick up their phone. It's horrific service for overpriced, mediocre stuff.

Yelp
I placed a huge order and tipped in advance on a Saturday. About 7 hours in advance of the party, I went in person to confirm it would be ready on time and they took down my phone number to call when it was ready. They were late with the order, it was only half of what I ordered, and what they gave me was not correct. I have been calling in to try and get a refund ($100 of pizza I didn't receive) but they have not once answered the phone or returned my call. Good pizza if they actually make it!

Yelp
First time here and I am very impressed. Tommy at the register helped walk us through the menu. Salad and as fresh and the chicken was juicy. Gotta pepperoni with jalapeño and other veggies. Good eats plus Lonestar on tap. Delicious! Super chill vibes. Looking forward to coming back again.

Yelp
Great full sized Pepperoni Pizza. One of the best NYC style thin crust pizza in Austin. Tasty & delicious..!

Joe K.

Yelp
Always give great slice sizes and (a rarity nowadays) at a very affordable price. Also a good pizza selection with a broad range of ingredients. Never had a problem with my order. Not sure what the low reviews are all about.

Yelp
King of Pepperoni pizza! So good. This place is walking distance from my house and I'm obsessed. The staff was so friendly as well!

Yelp
Hits the spot for a late night hole in the wall pizza joint. It's a decent thin crust pizza that's not too saucy and not too cheesy -- it could've been more flavorful sauce wise and the crust could've used just a tad more fluff if I'm being picky (it's perfect if you like a thin crisp crust) but overall it was great.

Yelp
Recently stopped for a slice at the Food Truck in Zilker Park. I was pleased to see Southside Flying Pizza and another food truck taking the place of the horrible snack bar that used to be there a couple of years ago. That snack bar had in-edible food, which is hard to do when all you serve is burgers. I got a slice, for $5 and it was just about the worst pizza I've had in a decade. The young woman who served me seemed bothered to have to serve anyone. I was surprised when she asked me if I wanted it warmed up. Yes, I did. It was a thick slice, barely warmed with zero taste. I threw more than half into the garbage and moved on to visiting the park. Surprising how bad it was, but it's obvious some people just don't really care about doing a good job.

Yelp
Any pizza place where the service reference SpongeBob SquarePants, is a win in my book

Yelp
6pm on a Saturday. No one is in the restaurant, except for one table of three people who are almost finished with their meal. At least 5 people are working. I ask for two slices to-go of pizzas that are in the display case. I tell the person taking my order that my Uber is nearby so if they can just put them in a box to/go, that'd be great. The person rings me up and asks my name, says they'll call my name once the order is ready.... I wait for about 5 minutes, watching the other workers look like they're doing something, but it doesn't involve the two slices of pizza I ordered. Then, someone goes up to the case and picks up the pies that I wanted slices from, then... he... throws... them... away... What?!?!? A few minutes later I'm able to flag someone down to inquire about my two slices. He seems extremely confused, walks around without asking anyone anything, then walks away out of sight. Grrrrrrrrrr.... no one else acknowledged me when I tried to get their attention, so I left without any of the food that I paid for.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth every bite pizza was craving even after feeling stuffed full of pizza

Yelp
Low key pizza shop sharing a parking lot with a gas station. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan sandwich To-Go. Friendly staff, but the food took some time because they had to thaw some frozen chicken (I was told). It made the tomato sauce a little watery and the chicken was borderline warm and cool in some parts. I'm guessing they rushed the thawing and were hoping that chopping it up would help (not quite). It was very filling and pretty good if I was going to compare it to bar food, but I think it's clear these ingredients are better served on pizza and not for this type of sandwich. This sandwich is almost a calzone except for the method of the how the dough is wrapped. Tasty dough though!

Yelp
Really good pizza. Huge slices. Fair price point . The one downside is I can't bring myself to sit and eat here as much as I'd like to because of the music. Most times it just sounds like the pinball machine music on super loud volume or a collection of kitchen utensils being thrown down the stairs
google avatar

Yelp
Great Pizza. I was moving and needed food delivered, and Southside didn't disappoint. The preserving process was easy, the delivery was within the expected timeframe, and the pizza had a ton of toppings on it. It was a little pricier than I expected - delivery charge, tax, tip, (and pizza) added up to about $35 for a large delivered. Still worth it and I'll order again. (Frequent traveler eating in his new home)

Yelp
If I could give them a 6, I would! Awesome experience and darn good pizza. South Lamar gem.

Yelp
Great TX Pizza. Love the sauce and thin crust. The beer on tap is good while your pie is being prepared.

Yelp
Probably the worst sandwich I've ever seen... picture is worth more than words. Went straight in my trash.

Yelp
I have been coming to this location for over 13 years and almost always had a good experience. The quality of the food was solid and the atmosphere was very authentic to Austin, which is a pleasant treat for native's who have seen our town slowly be eaten away. But this time even the authentic vibe wasn't enough to keep me coming back. I ordered a to go slice but had to run(somewhat quickly hence the to go). I waited, and waited, and waited, and waited. After 12 minutes they didn't even start the order despite the fact that no one was ahead of me order wise. The front of the house was fine but the people actually making the pizza seemed to not be able interested in working. Keep in mind, no one was in front of me. I paid but was not able to stick around while it took another 10 minutes to get a to go order. Sad to see the state of such a formerly great spot.

J P.

Yelp
Very very slow. As long as you don't show up during lunch because you will have to wait the whole hour. Very rude Hispanic girl that works there.

Kamran V.

Yelp
Shop wasn't clean. Just had 1/2 cheese pizza, laying out for customers to breathe on. Honestly looked worse than frozen. I should have just walked out but was hungry. The glass box where most shops keep pizzas was entirely empty. Okay, they'll heat the slice, that'll kill germs. Pepperoni add-on and crust were sub sub par. Like below public school lunch quality. Threw it out after 1 bite. A lunchables pack would have been a much better meal, and way cheaper too. What happened?! Spot used to be good. Assuming new owners who are clueless, without taste, and beyond cheap. Either they'll change quickly or go out of business. Would welcome new ownership.. What a waste of $6.

Yelp
Quick stop for a slice of pizza. Nothing special but the slice was large for the price.

Allison A.

Yelp
If you need decent pizza, this is a decent spot, not anything to write home about. What we ordered: * Large garlic knots * Cheesy bread * Meatlovers pizza, medium * Supreme pizza, medium Garlic knots - I definitely would not order again, my assumption is they're cooked quickly at a high temp because they're crispy and kind of burnt on the outside but a little doughy on the inside, not worth the buy Cheesy bread - Great flavor, good crisp on top but not over cooked, I would definitely order again as an add on Dipping sauces - Both these appetizers came with a dipping sauce, options are ranch, Gorgonzola, and marinara. Honestly?? We couldn't tell which was ranch or Gorgonzola, there was no discernible difference, both we're relatively unremarkable. Marinara was more of a chunky cut tomato thing, very lacking in flavor, it could use some garlic or salt or something Pizzas: Lots of toppings, like very generous portions. I was definitely impressed with the amount of meat on the meatlovers' pizza! Crust and sauce are meh, but aren't bad by any means. The amount of toppings sold me. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again, but it's a good option if you're in the area. We've gone a couple times before going to Saxon Pub to see some live music. Parking kind of sucks, so be prepared to circle or wait or park on a side street as a last resort, I'd probably try and get it to go.

Yelp
I ordered house salads to take to a game night & everyone loved them! Best takeout salad with Balsamic dressing & delicious candied pecans. Convenient & cool S. Lamar location. Next time I want to hang on the cool front patio.

C. S.

Yelp
Put an order in online. Gave us one hour for pick up, so showed up to pick up our single pizza in an hour. Upon arrival I was told "oh yea man our online times are way off, it'll be at least another 30 minutes". So, if you order online, good luck.

Yelp
Called and was immediately placed on hold. Waited 5 min. Decided to drive to the store while on hold. Got there and had been on hold nearly 15 min. Walked in. One employee playing pinball with his back to the door wearing full-on headphones. 2 guys making pizza. Pizza guys 100% saw me standing at the counter. Stood there roughly 5 min. No one acknowledged me whatsoever. Walked out while still on hold. Called back after I left. Someone answered and I told them what happened and hung up. Not poor service. No service. Doubt I'll be returning. Homeslice on S Congress is better anyway.
google avatar

Alan G.

Yelp
Ordered pick up. Arrived at scheduled time for them to say pizza had not been put in oven yet and would take 15 minutes. After waiting 20 minutes, I went back in and was them told it would take an additional 17 minutes. Go somewhere else

Aly C.

Yelp
I get the gluten free pizza every single time. I still can't believe it gluten free. Staff is amazing. Food is amazing. Will and have recommended it to a friend.

Yelp
I went to Southside Flying Pizza's tent everyday at ACL and finally decided in needed to get the real deal! It was just as delicious as I remember at ACL. I can't speak for other locations, but this is one were you'd want to get your pizza to go. There's a small seating area but it's right next to a gas station and very small! We ordered pizza on a weeknight and they were super busy but still had our pizza ready in about 15 minutes. We got a Hawaiian pizza and it was great. We also shared a small salad with balsamic vinaigrette and it was delicious as well! If you're in the area and craving pizza I highly recommend Southside!

Mallory K.

Yelp
First time coming to this location and when I walked in after placing a to go order there were 3 workers that completely ignored us. I waited at the front for about 10 minutes with nobody even acknowledging me. I thought maybe they're just busy and I went outside to their window where I sat for another 15 minutes without somebody talking to us. Finally went inside again and it took my boyfriend telling them our pizza was about to fall on the ground for anybody to even ask if we've already ordered. Phone was also constantly ringing with nobody trying to answer it. I would have walked out if I hadn't already paid before getting there. I work in the service industry and completely understand having to wait but somebody greeting me and saying a simple "we'll be right with you" would have made all the difference.
google avatar

Steph R.

Yelp
Great pizza combinations! While not necessarily the best pizza you'll have, it does the job. I really want them to up their crust game. Convenient location.
google avatar

Caty M.

Yelp
Southside is great! I can't believe the ratings aren't higher here. As a New Yorker, I have to say I'm pretty picky. This place has awesome za and their really quick! Love the Greek salad and the cookies. :P
google avatar

Yelp
For 7.00 you get a quarter slice and for most people that is all you will need . Chill environment so if you are looking for a good place to sit down and eat this is the place .
google avatar

K.S. T.

Yelp
We just had 4 large pizzas delivered to our office for lunch and they were all great! Got lots of compliments on my selection of pizza places. Thanks.

Matthew L.

Yelp
I haven't had a slice of pizza this good since I can remember. Maybe ever. This is a must try when in Austin.
google avatar

Pamela D.

Yelp
What happened to the crust?! The dough seems previously frozen. Not a good value for the price anymore. Family salad is great but you gotta do better.
google avatar

Melissa P.

Yelp
I just wanted a slice of pizza, and I was pleasantly surprised to receive basically half a pizza. I ordered the margherita, and it was delicious! The guy who answered the phone was also really nice so bonus points. I live around the corner and will definitely be back :)
google avatar

Kaydee B.

Yelp
This place needs a really, good, elbow-greased scrub down. It is very dirty inside. After I placed my order, I went to fill my drink cup. The soda dispenser had mold growing all around the bottom drain and had clearly not been cleaned in a VERY long time. I looked around and realized that the whole place was covered in filth. Also, the guys making pizza had long hair and beards, with no kind of hair nets at all. I asked for a refund because of the mold in the soda dispenser and the guy told me, "Oh, I didn't charge you for your drink." Ooh, great...FREE MOLD!!! After a very lengthy process of him having to call someone, he told me he issued me a refund. I'm still waiting for it to show up on my account. Eat here if you want to get food poisoning.

Yelp
My kids and I totally love the pizza and the Monday night pick up special is legitimate! Unfortunately the last two times I ate there I got sick. I love the pizza so much we will definitely still eat at the one on Congress or Barton Springs.

Kirsten B.

Yelp
Honestly if I could give zero stars I would as I never even got my pizza. Placed my order online and was given a 25 minute pick up time. Went to pick it up at right on 25 min only to be told they hadn't even started it as they were busy and that it would be another 20min. I waited another 20 min, when I went to pick it up only one pizza was ready, my second pizza was still going to be at least another 10 - 15 min. When I expressed my frustration the guy said "As you can see it's busy and chaotic. You can either wait or cancel". Great customer service! Needless to say, I cancelled.
google avatar

Renee R.

Yelp
Probably the worst pizza I've ever tasted. I never realized pizza could taste this terribly. I got the gluten free 3 toppings. There's 8 slices and I got exactly 8 pepperonis and 4 tiny pieces of sausage. It was dry and disgusting.
google avatar

Sagel T.

Yelp
This place is GREAT. Discovered it on accident after eating dinner elsewhere and leaving hungry. We placed our order online and, by the time we arrived, it was ready for pick up. I was very pleased at how much flexibility there was in customizing our pie. We chose to do one pie with two different specialties. One half was the Spinart and the other was BBQ Chicken. Spinart was AWESOME and pretty dang close to Artichoke Pizza in NYC. BBQ Chicken was also great, not too sweet. What I loved was that the pizza was not greasy and did not leave me feeling bloated and heavy. We loved walking into the S Lamar location and seeing a bunch of dudes hanging out behind the counter, felt exactly how a local pizza shop should!
google avatar

Yelp
We have been a customer of Double Dave's for many years. I cannot eat their pepperoni rolls any more--they do a number on my stomach. So I was looking forward to trying their Phil rolls where I could add my own fillings. I placed the order in the app and sent my son to pick it up. When he went to pick it up, they started making them when he got there and told them he was there to pick it up. He said they were quite rude and hardly spoke or acknowledged him. The rolls were good. However my son and husband both said they were WAY too greasy for their taste. Won't be going back sadly.

Yelp
About on the same level as gatti's, pizza hut, or dominos, if you know what I mean. Average, uninspired pizza. Toppings were ok, but the crust is not very good. It's very doughy with no texture. Probably won't order here again.
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
5 stars for the pizza 3 stars for our half-and-half pizza turning out to be honestly a 1/3 to 2/3 ratio and I was starving that night... womp womp!!!
google avatar

Georges S.

Yelp
While the delivery was a tad slow - the pepperoni rolls and the ACL made up for it - that much. No kidding. They have a good dough with good flavor.

Yelp
So happy this South Congress pizza palace has opened a SoLa location. The slices were hot and large, with crisp crust and super tasty toppings. (try the breakfast bacon. YUM!) Seating is limited to a couple of outdoor stools, hope they can squeeze in a few indoor seats into this tiny spot.

Yelp
Had a slice of pizza delivered and an order of garlic knots and was extremely disappointed. The pieces arrived about an hour later, and although the size is impressive (one slice is two pieces of regular pizza), the middle was mushy, even after reheating in a toaster oven. Dough was nothing to write home about. Delivery fee was a mere $3 though. Overall their pizza was lacking in flavor, which was a disappointment because sun dried tomato pesto sounds delicious, does it not? I much preferred the garlic knots over the pizza, and even those were quite bland, pieces of dough rolled in oil and garlic with not much marination within or throughout. Not my cup of tea and definitely not worth $12 with tip and tax. Hate to say I would withhold from supporting a local business, but in comparison to the other pizza joints in town, the quality is subpar and it would quickly lose when deciding where to eat.
