We were visiting from out of town, friends were getting married in the area, and these friends suggested this location for dinner. We're from California and really love food. We arrived before our friends, so we stood outside of the line to peruse the options. Decent enough. I'll talk about the food before what happened during the interim...
The Chopped Brisket Baked Potato was great, but it was heavy. The cheese and brisket on it were deep and delicious, but for the most part, once you got down to the actual potato, it was dry. I would probably order it with extra butter, or butter on the side. The special of the night was the steak, and while the seasoning was good, it was cooked inconsistently. The middle was still cold, but the outside parts were a decent medium rare. They were out of Chicken and Turkey. My guy wanted a salad, and being out of chicken and turkey, they still upcharged to add brisket onto it. I also opted for a bit of the fattier brisket with a nice bark, and they were able to provide that.
And then onto the interactions: As we were standing there (outside of the line looking at the menu) a gentleman, who might have been a manager (?), approached us to do the standard small talk. We asked for recommendations and he answered. Then we mentioned that we were excited for Texas BBQ because our legit options are limited in California. Before we could get another word out, he made an off-the-cuff comment about how if our (California) politics align with the Texas politics of the house, we should be fine. What. the. literal. heck? I hate talking politics in general, so now I'm freaking out that anything might be devised as "incorrect". I thought it was initially a passive aggressive thing, but reflecting on it, who the heck brings up that when having a friendly conversation about food? And then this person re-approached us in line, along with others, to try to sell discounted sausage because the proceeds of the evening were going to a local school. We stayed friendly but it kind of surprised that he was so nonchalant about what transpired earlier.
I know this is a popular chain, but unless necessary, I would probably try other locations before this one.
