Best Wine Bars in Philly for Drinking Wine by the Glass | Eater Philly

"Every Monday night from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., the bar at Queen Village’s charming Southwark restaurant becomes Winewark. It’s when sommelier Jamie Harrison Rubin pours rare and fun bottles, like 2007 Barolo and 1993 Jura. The kitchen is closed, but delightful bar snacks, like fried macaroni, are available." - Ernest Owens

My friend and I had a lovely dinner at Southwark a couple of weekends ago. Upon walking into the restaurant, we were immediately greeted by the friendly host and bartender. Our server was also incredibly kind and attentive throughout the meal. We shared a warm breads appetizer before moving onto our entrees, which were the roasted lamb shoulder and the duck. We also tried a few different cocktails, which were all pleasing. Desserts were also very good, though the exact names of the dishes escape me. Despite the higher price point, I would say that the excellent service and atmosphere at Southwark make it a perfect spot for an intimate dinner or gathering place for friends.

Google
Awesome restaurant and vibes. Super friendly, knowledgeable staff. We had the rye toast with rhubarb and honey, potato soup, veal ravioli, and the pickled lamb and bacon toast. Would order all of them again, super fresh and delicious. We got the gnocchi and burger and fries as entrees and both were phenomenal. Great burger, perfectly cooked and the fries were incredible. Do not skip the dessert. The chocolate napoleon and the almond brioche charlotte were both amazing. Good wine selection and awesome vibes. Will definitely go back and highly recommend.

We had a wonderful dinner with old friends at Southwark! The server was extremely knowledgeable and helpful! Drinks and food were high quality, and the special wine the server recommended (an older Chianti) was a great pairing and excellent value! Cosy environment, good volume for an intimate dinner.

Google
What an awesome dinner. Southwark had been on the list for a while and we were finally able to go. Perfect night to dig out back in the courtyard. Cocktails are great and clever. Wine list is small but solid and appropriate for the menu. The beef tartare toast appetizer was great, but the grated horseradish was a little too overpowering to appreciate the tartare. The duck was PERFECT. I say that rarely and it was perfect. Enough fat to want to eat the crisp. Little enough that fat wasn’t your entire bite. Perfectly cooked. The chive mezze rigatoni was in a fantastic yet simple sauce, you’d want to drink it. The double cheeseburger was solid but the fries really stole the show. Ended the night with the corn soufflé cake which is both the weirdest and most delicious combination of flavors. So impressed with the meal. Can’t wait to come back.

The high rating of this restaurant is apparently due solely to the bar, not the quality of the food or the attitude toward customers. I do not recommend this place if you don’t want to ruin your evening. The chef here doesn't even know the difference between the levels of doneness for meat, despite it being the most expensive dish on the menu. I got my steak raw instead of medium as I requested, and it was tough to chew, indicating low-quality meat. The waiter offered to cook it further, which would have been a great solution, but they served it already sliced, with all the juices leaked out. Also, the manager refused to remove the dish from the bill or even offer a discount. Instead, without asking, she brought us a single dessert to share, serving it as if tossing a bone to a dog. No one even bothered to check if we could eat sweets. The waiters here, when they ask if everything is okay, apparently don’t expect any answer other than enthusiastic praise. Without a doubt, the bread was good, but everything else was very mediocre considering the menu prices. The salad was extremely sour, resembling sauerkraut. Perhaps it was meant to be that way, but even the potatoes served with the beef gravy had a sour taste. It is not about the money but about the attitude toward customers. In decent restaurants, the chef always comes out to speak with guests in situations like this, or the manager offers a reasonable solution for both sides. But in this place, nobody cares about the restaurant’s reputation or the people who dine there.

Google
I had a very enjoyable experience here with a friend for dinner. I love the frenetic energy of the front of the place while the back of house was quiet and romantic. The food was fine. Nothing was bad. I just wasn't blown away. I will come back for the service and atmosphere.

Yelp
The environment of the restaurant was incredibly inviting and calming. The food is amazing with a comforting feeling. The cocktails were great as well. I was happy they start you off with a good tasting small soup. The soup sets a warm tone for the rest of the dinner. The service did not feel rushed and my friends and I at the dinner were able to have a nice meal.

Yelp
Southwark is the perfect cozy restaurant for a chilly winter night. I gather that there's a backyard as well, so perhaps it's the perfect restaurant for a temperate summer night, too. Good for all seasons! I put Southwark on my Philly list (I'm from Philly but live in NYC) ages ago and I finally made in here with the family during my last visit home. We had a really enjoyable dinner here, everything we tried was solid at the very least, with a few standouts. Overall, Southwark is a versatile spot, great for a refined but unpretentious meal. We came here at 8 on a Saturday night as a party of six. The decor is pretty minimal yet it feels very welcoming and homey, particularly in the back room, which feels as if it could have once been somebody's dining room, with cute little paintings of flora and fauna adorning the walls. After a weekend with family I was eager to find the drink menu, which was one of the many aspects of Southwark that attracted me initially. The cocktail menu is pretty varied, featuring an impressive variety of liquors and flavors profiles. I first got the The Lonely Hunter (Gin, Vermouth Blanc, Eden's Herbal Liqueur), as it was the closest thing to a martini I could see on the speciality cocktail list. It definitely was not giving martini as it turns out, mainly because of the herbal liqueur, which was really lovely and aromatic, it just made the drink a bit sweeter than a martini which is why I am making a point of differentiating it. A great drink to start with. I then got the Shadowboxer (Templeton Rye, Apple Brandy, Amari, Sweet Vermouth), which is an Old Fashioned variation. I was between that and the House of Jealous Lovers (Bourbon, Calvados, Sherry, Cocchi di Torino, Maraschino), a Manhattan variation, which someone else in our party got, and I much preferred that. Mine may have just been a bit watered down. Food-wise, I split everything with my partner to get a larger sampling of the menu. The menu has lots of good options, kind of has farm-to-table vibes and features a ton of seasonal produce which I always appreciate and enjoy. Eats, below: Local Yellowfin Tuna Crudo w/ Napa Cabbage Slaw, Patio Chilis, Sunchoke Miso Vinaigrette, Sunflower Seed Crumble: A Really fresh and delicious preparation. All of the accouterments were thoughtful and complemented one another well. I'll always be ordering a crudo or tartare when I see it on the menu and it's nice to get one that features elements other than a sauce or emulsion. Endives & Beet Salad w/ Roasted Concord Grapes, Pumpkin Seed Purée, Granola, Ginger Vinaigrette: A- Solid salad with great winter veggies. Not an A because the vinegar notes of the dressing, while not necessarily bad, were a bit overpowering. All of the elements were there for a great salad, the balance was just a bit off. Still enjoyable and we didn't regret ordering it. Keiser's Pheasantry Duck w/ Confit Sweet Potatoes & Purée, Local Brussels Sprouts, Fig Leaf Jus: A- Lots of fun stuff going on here - I actually enjoyed the confit more than the duck itself, which was cooked medium instead of medium rare, the latter of which I prefer. Still, duck is one of my favorite things to see on the menu, especially in the colder months, and the flavors were everything you'd want in a duck preparation - some sweetness, some earthiness, some saltiness, rich but not heavy. And it was all beautifully presented. NJ Tilefish w/ Cauliflower & Lemon Purée, Charred Fioretto Cauliflower, Shellfish Jus, Wilted Greens, Leeks: A The most memorable dish of the night, loved by everyone at the table who ordered it. The fish itself was cooked perfect, smooth and buttery which was enhanced by the shellfish jus as well as the puree it sat atop of. Delicate yet hearty. Really warming and satisfying, a great plate to end the night on.

Yelp
It has been a while since I was truly surprised by a restaurant and this was a meal I did not see coming. From the outside, it's a pretty unassuming spot from the outside, sitting next to the sister restaurant Ambra. Admittedly, we would love to try Ambra but the pricepoint for the tasting menu is a bit intimidating so we may ultimately not. When you walk in, it's easy not to realize how big the place actually is. We were seated at a huge table in the back just inside the outdoor seating, which also would have been a nice option. We were not expecting the complimentary amuse-bouch, so that was a nice touch. We started with the warm breads, which came with a fascinating ricotta spread. Next was the whipped pork confit which at first I thought may be a skosh salty but in the end was reminiscent of a nice spreadable pate (that they were nice enough to give us extra bread for). The salad with trout and chili breadcrumbs also started off on the saltier side, but once you mix things together it ends up very well balanced and quite nice. For mains, we went with the lamb shoulder (my favorite of the two) and the tilefish-the latter was the recommendation of the waitress and we were so thankful it was as we probably wouldn't have chosen it but really enjoyed it. The real gem of the experience, however, was the service. It's such a homey vibe and not only was the food quick, but the servers were so delightful at every turn. They even folded our napkins every time once of us stood up, which I hadn't seen at many other non-course restaurants. Truly made for a lovely meal.

Yelp
This restaurant is on the fancier side and usually requires a reservation so the food is pricey. The ambiance is nice but it was a bit too dim so it was hard to see at times. We were sat immediately with a reservation and the servers were nice. Lamb Confit 3/5: The lamb was tasty and tender but the sauce was too overwhelmingly salty. Pleasant Duck 4/5: The duck was soft and had a crispy edge but there were only 3 small pieces. Some components of the dish were also on the saltier side. Beef Tartare 3/5: The beef tartare was good but the pickle crosnes overpowered the beef tartare as it has a strong pickled taste.

Yelp
I just want to say I have not had a meal this satisfying and wonderful in a long time. Not only was the food fantastic but it was the above and beyond service!! Our servers name was Tracy and she was just a delight!!!! She was the perfect combination of knowing the menu extensively but got to know us and what we would love!! Her recommendations for food, cocktails and wine were so on point. It is rare to have such an amazing dining experience!! I cannot gush more about the wonderful service and food!!!

Yelp
Loved this restaurant! The apps were good but the two entrees I'd go back for: 1. Double cheeseburger - requested cheddar instead of blue cheese. Fries were awesome 2. Campanelle "cacio e pepe"

Yelp
Came here for drinks last week. Best bar experience I've had in a long time in Philly! Food wasn't as good though. Got two seats at the bar easily on a weekday night. Bartender had the most positive vibes ever experienced in Philly. Gave us advice on drinks when we asked and was very attentive. Drinks were phenomenal. Flavorful and unique. Food was good don't get me wrong but just didn't blow me away like the drinks and service did. The hushpuppies were very well fried and crispy, but just not super flavorful. Also had the agnolotti. Perfectly cooked and a nice creamy filling but again just a bit bland on the flavor side. I've heard the entrees are fantastic, and the drinks and service will have us back for sure. The vibe for a weeknight drink was unbeatable.

Yelp
Vibes: intimate, subtle, familiar, classy casual; bring a date or a few friends Tasting notes: - Stop Flying in the House: green tea declares itself first on the sip, just sweet enough; strong but easy to drink - Lonza: thinly sliced, smoky and buttery; great paired with a swipe of the flavorful mustard and a bite of the slightly vinegary pickled sprouts and potatoes; lovely char and thickness to the bread - Duck breast: amazingly crispy skin wrapped around each indulgently tender slice; meatballs bite-sized; shredded radish perfect for picking up the umami-rich brown sauce - Double cheeseburger and fries: on the saltier side because of the blue cheese; excellent char to the patties and ratio of the bun to contents; enjoyed dipping the crispy, skin-on fries of various thickness in the aioli Other thoughts: - Loved the homemade hot sauces (husk cherry jalapeño and peach habanero) on the fries, a great tip from a neighboring table - Fast service - Portion sizes on the lighter side Impression: would love to come back for dinner or even just a drink at the bar!

Yelp
We came in for drinks before dinner at another restaurant. The bar is super cute and cozy. The playlist was fabulous. We enjoyed all the cocktails we tried but my favorite was the Everybody Loves Grandpa. We came in because I read a review of tue Mariah Carey Can't Dance. I tried it as well and while it was tasty, I preferred the other drinks. Enjoyed the homemade chips and ranch dip bar snack as well. We will be back!

Yelp
Quality of the food was impeccable. You can tell they really put thoughts into their dishes. Ambience was interesting, definitely gave a lot of thoughts into curating a specific feel of the place. We felt rushed during our time there, from ordering to transitioning between courses. We wished we had more time in the establishment.

Yelp
The ambience, service and FOOD are all exceptional. Don't sleep on the burger, but the tomahawk for two was outstanding.

Yelp
Best steak in all of Philly!!! The seasoning on that steak is superb!! No sauce needed. Swordfish was divine and the Squash Gnudi taste like nothing I've ever tasted before. Vibes are on point, drinks are delicious and well crafted . 10/10 recommend

Yelp
I'd been to Southwark for drinks, but recently had the opportunity to dine there. It's a great place for both! We had the short rib pasta and the scallops. The pasta was very good, and the scallops were some of the best I've had. Of course, a little pistachio gelato and a berry sorbet topped off a great meal!

Yelp
It was a quiet summer Saturday night so why seat our party of two next to the group with a screeching child by the pantry, when there's a two top by the window (that the same server is working) that stays empty the whole time we are there? Happily, they left fairly soon after we arrived. But a strange start... The food - a complimentary gazpacho amuse bouche was delightful and the lamb bacon toast rich and umami. The scallop ceviche with green strawberry mole was fabulous with sweet and sour notes along with crunchy elements too. We both had the pork loin that came with sorghum, carrots and confit artichokes. There was a foamy delicious sauce too. My pork was cooked perfectly, however my spouses pork was red raw in spots and looked quite different and when we raised this immediately we got lectured by the server that it was supposed to be like that and overcooking it would be wrong. We felt bullied into keeping it. We didn't stay for dessert. The food was tasty. Overall the service was not very friendly from our primary server. The runners were very nice.

Yelp
Stopped by for a couple of drinks as Southwark is conveniently located a block away from TLA. We admired the beautiful bar, classic decor and struggled with choosing what drinks to try first. I had the Get Off Your Horse and it was A TRUE DELIGHT. It was fruity without being overly sweet. The spices gave a complexity that I really enjoyed. The second drink I had was the Four Letter Word, this was very interesting but was stronger than I expected. I couldn't quite pinpoint the different flavors as they were all frenetically dancing around my mouth. Overall the drinks were innovative and delicious! The service was warm and expedient. I also ordered the brown butter and rosemary popcorn - YUMM. My friend got the pickled vegetables and there were so many types of vegetables in the small unassuming bowl, we tried but couldn't identify them all.

Yelp
This place is located near Passyunk avenue in South Philly. The place has really, really good & strong drinks. We started with mixed pickles which I thoroughly enjoyed. The pickles weren't too bitter and there was a good amount of them. The bread they gave out was very soft and fluffy. Mussels Escabeche was probably the best thing on the menu. There was a lot of mussels on the toast with regards to this dish. Ended the night with local yellowfin tuna and rosemary & potato gnocchi which were cooked perfectly. Loved the smoked short rib in the gnocchi- it didn't taste strong when mixed into the pasta.

Yelp
Would consider Southwark one of my favorite bars in the city. The outdoor patio is a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat and enjoy a nice glass of wine. They have special happy hours, the cocktail list is creative, and the food is absolutely delicious. they have options and accommodations that are gluten free friendly, & they even have zero proof drinks! Nice for a date night, ladies night, or just popping in on your way home from work.

Yelp
Southwark is the best. Best burger in Philadelphia. I've had a lot of them! The cocktails are amazing. The staff is great. The Chef is one of the most talented in Philadelphia. Highly recommended this place! Really enjoy the Milk Punch. Unlike anything I've ever had as far as cocktails!

Yelp
I stopped here a few weeks ago on a whim to have dinner. They had two little bijou outdoor tables and I just thought, wouldn't it be nice to enjoy the autumn air and have a meal? I'm so glad I did. I'm under the impression that the menu I ordered from was a temporary situation being done all outdoors on a grill, so you may not be able to get the dishes that I had if you visit in the future. I will say that my server was an absolute delight. If I could magically replicate her and have her be a server at every restaurant in the world I would. And not to sound like I'm bragging, but I tipped accordingly and I hope you do the same. There were three skewers on offer: shrimp, mushrooms and chicken. I ordered one of each and honestly the mushrooms were underwhelming, but the other two were superb. I also had a burger that was one of the best burgers I've enjoyed in my life. It looks like they've shut down for the time being due to Covid, but as soon as this place is open again I look forward to trying the regular menu.

Yelp
The atmosphere and service was very good. However, the good was terrible. The monkfish was barely edible. Small chunks of fish, way too salty, breaded poorly. I have had monkfish many times. This did not taste like monkfish. It tasted like breaded fish from the freezer and put in the microwave. Way overpriced for the quality. Very disappointing. Another dish was so salty it could not be eaten.
google avatar

Brie C.

Yelp
Service is the best! Food is consistently excellent. Limited but excellent vegetarian options. It seems like the menu changes every few months or so. We go there every two weeks at least! I like that the outdoor patio is not right on the street or sidewalk.

Yelp
Had a reservation here for my birthday. Ended up not feeling great so I decided to do the responsible thing and test for COVID. Tested positive so we canceled our reservation (which was at a prime time on a Friday night). Long story short they charged us a $25/person cancellation fee for canceling Friday morning. Other similar businesses typically only charge if they can't fill the reservations, I find it a little suspect that they couldn't fill a prime time reservation on a Friday night. Poor customer service and not standard business practice is why I'm giving it such a poor rating. This was my first cancellation fee I've ever received. When I called they explained this was their standard practice and I should've called them that night explaining the situation instead of calling 24 hours later. They said they cannot make an accommodation and this is standard, I said I find it hard to believe they didn't fill the reservation... the response was a credit for future visit with no proof.

Yelp

Yelp
Fantastic drinks, appetizers and atmosphere but a little slow on drink service. Came here on a Sat. evening for drinks with a large group before dinner and was extremely pleased with the drinks we had as well as the appetizers. I had some Shishito peppers, a mushroom salad, and some beef tartar. The peppers were perfectly seasoned and charred. The beef tartar, although looking not too appetizing was absolutely fantastic. Actually is there a way to make beef tartar look good once you mix the egg yoke in? Anyway, the mushroom salad wasn't my favorite though as it had too many other things going on. There was potatoes and greens, I'd preferred just mushrooms or mushroom and potatoes, putting the greens in there I felt distracted from the mushrooms since the greens were just all over the plate. My only real complaint was that it took a little long to get our drinks made. most drinks were smaller so they were consumed in about 5 minutes but it took probably another 5 minutes to get the bartender's attention and another 5 minutes to make. Don't expect to get a drink quickly if they are busy. The atmosphere is very nice inside and they have an outside seating area as well as a semi open area looking the outside so there's always going to be plenty of light in dining room during the day. I can't wait to come back and try dinner here, if they nail dinner service then I will be a new recommendation for South Philly dinning for sure.

I hesitate let out the secret but southwark is one of the most consistent and best restaurants in town. Great drinks, great vibe and an ever changing seasonal menu.

Yelp
I cooked and ate dinner for once. So I decided to go out for dessert and drinks. It was almost 10 pm on a Sunday. I knew my chances of finding a good place would be slim. However I searched Yelp and finally decided on Southwark. Very beautiful place. Nice long polished wooden bar when you enter. Dimly lit, the environment was just so warm, romantic and inviting. They had an eclectic mix of tunes playing. Since it was late the outdoor patio and dining room was closed off. I decided on my grandmother's chocolate cake and warm blueberry tart. Both were stellar. I like complex but simple desserts. I know that's an oxymoron but pastry people know what I mean. The chocolate cake was rich, moist and decadent. You can tell a good quality chocolate was used and not just cocoa power. The salted caramel ice cream was light but creamy and wasn't cloyingly sweet. I absolutely love chocolate and salted caramel together and this dessert definitely did not disappoint. The warm blueberry tart was perfect for a summer evening. Sweet but tart, the crust stood up to the ice cream and blueberry filling without being too dense. The lemon curd ice cream was spot on. The plating for both is pretty minimal but the flavors packed a punch. Their wine and cocktail selection is also great. I had the Malbec which was yum. Medium tannins, bursting with red fruit, hints of chocolate and spice gave it some complexity. I also had the sparking gamay which is by far one of the best sparkling wines I've ever had. It was so bright, juicy with great acidity. I got hints of raspberry and cherry, honestly just lovely. I tried this cocktail they had called Americas cup. It was cucumber infused gin, blueberry shrub, mint, soda and lemon I believe. It was delicious. I had 2 and would've had more if I didn't have to be up early for work the next day. The bartender was cool. Not exceptionally friendly but knowledgeable and talented. If drinks and dessert are any indication of how good the food is going to be I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
2 events led me to be uncomfortably full and happy about it last night: 1. I found myself grocery-less (business trip life + holidays= sadfridge) and in the city on a Sunday night which rarely happens (usually at Sunday night family dinners). And I know I'm always missing out on Sunday Night Suppers, so I google a bunch and think Southwark might be a good idea because: 3 COURSES FOR $25?! 2. I recently made the mistake of following a bunch of Philly chefs on instagram, which means my phone is constantly showing me pictures of food that are like "EAT ME NOW," and George Sabatino's dog, who is, admittedly, cute. Anyways, I'm creeping on Sam Jacobson's instagram, and he posts a picture of the cottage pie on the menu and I'm like, okay be there in 5. (Fun fact: cottage pie has beef, shepard's pie has lamb, and pâté chinois is the French Canadian version of cottage pie and usually just has corn, beef, and mashed potatoes). Southwark looks like a cool bar that might have decent food, but you should actually think of it as a really good restaurant that has awesome food, and also (bonus!) a cool bar. There's actually a pretty sweet dining area that you probably didn't know existed back there. You could probably have a large party back there and be super loud and no one would know. Our server, Louis, was the perfect combination of hilarious and friendly, without being awkward or overbearing. He did that ninja thing where he refills your water and you don't even realize. We sat in the bar area and it was a lively atmosphere, good for a date or dinner with friends. The food was excellent. I finally was able to say "we'll have one of everything" and then qualified it with "on the Sunday Supper side of the menu" (2 choices of appetizers and 2 choices of dessert). The Sunday Supper menu changes weekly so there's no point in describing everything in detail, just know that the parsnip soup with chili oil looked like a work of art and was a party in my mouth, the cottage pie was nothing like my Grandma's (that's a good thing, sorry Grandmaman), and the flourless chocolate cake was perfection. I would say I would like to cover myself in it but that would make it hard to eat all of it, because although I do yoga a lot, I'm not THAT bendy. Sam also sent out the sweetbreads, which came on some sweet potato, and you wouldn't have even known there was anything on that plate because we essentially licked it clean. Definitely recommend ordering that. HIGHLY recommend and will be back. I can't pass up such a good deal. Last star, I'll be back for you when I have one of their cocktails.

Yelp
This place was very underwhelming for the price. There was very little flavor in the dishes. the staff was great and the atmosphere is nice. But the food was not good enough to come back, dry and flavorless. Left to get dessert somewhere else.

Yelp
If my next experience is as good as my first, I will keep coming back to this great neighborhood joint. Great drinks, solid happy hour options, and nice and engaging staff makes me excited to return. After an "okay" dinner at the newly opened Emmy Squared (which we were so excited to visit), we had to go somewhere else to close the night on a good note. Note: Emmy wasn't bad, it was just underwhelming given the hype and that we had also just seen it on The Flay List where it looked delicious and amazing. It was good - but meh. I have had a better burger and have had far better pizza - even at home. So we opted to head on over to Southwark for a quick late happy hour. It didn't disappoint - the staff was nice, patient and attentive. They even joked around our bombarding us with menus because it was still happy hour. They had plenty of options - unlike a lot of happy hour menus - lots of cocktails, a few wines and plenty of food options. I was even more intrigued by the regular menu (which I can't wait to go back and have). In a nutshell - service makes me want to come back here and the good drinks will definitely make it happen sooner rather than later. They clearly seem to understand that the experience is a differentiator - and as long as they don't change, I'll be back.

Yelp
My friends and I had made a reservation on a Wednesday evening for dinner. Sadly, my friend who had made the reservation has a grandparent that is very ill and has been going in and out of the hospital. My friend had to cancel last minute given the unpredictability of her granddad's health. The restaurant charged us $75 for a day of cancellation. She called the restaurant to explain and asked if they would be willing to refund her the money due to the challenges that she's dealing with and also, $75 is quite a lot of money for her at this time. We had every intention of rescheduling once things became more predictable with my friend's life circumstances as we've heard nice things about the restaurant. In the end, the manager, Sterling, was unwilling to refund the money. He was willing to give a measly 50% off of the $75 charged once we dined with them but given the lack of compassion of the management and poor customer service overall, I would never go simply out of principle. I understand restaurants can have this policy but it was a Wednesday night, there were plenty of other reservations available, and this was a circumstance entirely out of everyone's control. We would have spent well over $75 as well if we had come to the restaurant to eat. If the customer service is a reflection of the food and experience itself, I'd rather stay home.

Yelp
Great ambiance and delicious food. We sat in their back patio area and the set up was perfect with bright string lights and great decor. Our server was extremely knowledgeable of the food and drink options. The flavors were unique and delicious. Would certainly visit again.

Yelp
I was in town on business and met my brother, who lives locally, here for a late night snacks and drinks. The tartar with fresh horseradish was excellent!! The gnocchi, beautiful AND tastyThe excellent spiked chamomile tea. (Our bartender suggested a nice tequila would complement the tea, and it did!!) And a very reasonable bill. I loved it! Sadly, I only got a picture of the tea, because the presentation was so lovely!

Yelp
Love love love coming in here for happy hour and after dinner wines. They have an amazing happy hour with food and wine specials. Either way, their menu is so reasonably priced for the portion size and quality of food. My Favorites: Beef tartare: Good god, it comes out at the perfect temperature diced up super small with the most delicious shredded horseradish on top served with house made chips. I could eat this every day and I always get it when I come. Duck Poutine Fries: The fries are perfectly crispy and the cheese and meat ratio on them is perfect. Even though duck is one of the greasier birds this dish isn't too too heavy or greasy. Gnocchi: I was surprised at how delicious this was. I love gnocchi and have clearly never had it as pillowy, soft and perfect the way Southwark does it! I'm looking forward to trying the bone marrow appetizer, I've seen it ordered a lot and just haven't yet taken the plunge. Their wines are exquisite and they have a great beer selection. They can also mix up some great cocktails! The bartenders and hostesses are always so so nice. They can definitely get busy in there because they have a huge bar and a few tables in the bar section, plus they have to make drinks for the restaurant part..but you're never left thinking they don't notice you or you're forgotten. Another great thing is they serve the majority of their menu until late night which is either 12:30 or 1 depending on the day. So happy this spot is in my neighborhood!!

Yelp
Love, love, loved my experience here. Ambience, food, and staff were great. Our waitress recommended the Gnocchi and OMG they were like little pillows melting in my mouth. Not going with the full 5 stars because I felt like courses were dragged out but still an overall great experience.

Yelp
A few of my old roommates and I met for dinner and drinks over the holiday week. This place has been on my list for a while for its farm-to-table menu and high praise for cocktails. For drinks, between the four of us, we tried the Seventy-five Cocktail with gin, I Can Get You A Job In The Airport Doing That with gin, and Candy Colored Clown Called The Sandman with scotch off the menu, plus classic old fashioneds and dirty martinis. Unfortunately, the only stand out was the dirty martinis. Everything else fell kind of flat for us. One of my friends even switched to beer. For dinner, we decided to get some small plates to share. Then we each got our own entree. We started with the mussels escabeche and country pâté, which both surprised us in one way or another. The tapas mussels came with buttered grilled baguette, and while it was delicious, it was not easy to share among four people. The country pâté was sizable and came with toasted baguette, mustard, and cornichons. However, when the waitress brought it over, she luckily added that there were hazelnuts in it. Unfortunately my friend has a tree nut allergy, and she was a little upset that they left a common allergy off the menu. Though her allergy isn't severe (like those who can't even be at the same table as tree nuts), we wouldn't have ordered it if we had known. To make sure there was enough food, we also ordered the beef tartare to share. We loved all the fresh horseradish on it! After nibbling on the starters and another round of dirty martinis, we got our appetizers. Between the four of us, we got the lamb pappardelle, veal bourguignon, roasted chicken, and the market catch of the day, which was black sea bass. I had the fish (delicious), which was served with a large prawn (slightly overcooked) on top of a vegetable puree. Everyone finished their entrees with ease (and minimal sharing... we were still so hungry after appetizers). With a lot of hit or miss experiences throughout our meal, we skipped desserts and took our next round of drinks elsewhere.

Yelp
Well, I never thought I'd eat sweetbreads. And, for the record, they are neither sweet nor bread. But I did. And I lived and managed to feel worldly to boot. Recently 6 of us dined here in the teeny tiny back room (there's a patio that would be lovely to sit at but alas, it was pouring that night) and ate so much that we could barely move afterwards. My favorite was the scallops, which were made to perfection. Make sure to save room for dessert, too - whatever the chocolate thing I had blew my mind! But this review wouldn't be complete without saying that the service was the BEST I've ever had in the city. Our waiter was amazing and made sure nobody went thirsty, hungry or without an amusing story. So to that I say 5 stars to both the bar AND the restaurant!

Yelp
I have come here a few times for cocktails and really enjoy this place! I love that they serve milk punch (which I found out here originated in Philly). Its a very time-consuming cocktail, so it is always a treat to have! I reaaaally want to come back here to try their food, especially their bone marrow :-)

Yelp
I love Southwark because it makes me feel sophisticated without having to be. I can lounge by a classic wooden bar while drinking a snazzy Manhattan and talking politics. But I can do it in a T Shirt while people talk about The Ramones and someone draws a dog. And to me that is awesome! Went here for the first time after the Elite Event last night (Thanks again Carrie!) and I have to say that it was nothing short of amazing. They had a grand variety of micro brews on tap. But what stands out is the fact that it's the only bar outside of Nodding Head that has beer from Nodding Head on tap! But definitely try their Bloody Mary's. might just be the best that I ever had in all of it's spicy glory. Can't comment on the food yet, aside from hearing their brunches are supposed to be good. But I look forward to being able too. The great staff and classy setting make this spot more than worth going too.

Yelp
Bottomline: Stop by for a drink if you're in the area; stay for the food! VIBE: Southwark is a classic! Before craft cocktails were a thing in Philadelphia, Southwark was pouring one of the best Manhattans in the city - and it still does! The decor is classic and despite a change in ownership, not much has changed - it's still a comfy, casual spot evoking a local wateringhole. DRINKS: You may find a few nods to the new kids on the block, but by and large the menu is concerned with the classics. Sidle up to the city's best Manhattan, or a well-prepared Old Fashioned or Corpse Reviver, No. 2. The bartenders know what they're doing and will pour you a generous sidecar should your beverage exceed your vessel. EATS: The menu hits on all marks and has a late night offering to complement your drinks - take full advantage!

Yelp
I've never had a disappointing experience here. The food is always top-notch, seasonal and local. The cocktails are well-crafted, and the wine by the glass list is great. The only downside is that it can get a little pricey if you want to have a couple drinks. But that's the price you pay most places for getting liquored up on something better than the usual "lager" There is a real focus on locally-sourced foods here. I had a delicious brunch the other day, especially with all the late spring/early summer produce out in full force. Everything we tried was thoughtful, fresh and just yummy. There is a long bar when you enter. A small full dining room is in the back & there is also a patio for nicer weather. But we prefer to eat & drink at the bar. It's elegantly casual and fun all at the same time.

Yelp
I live two doors down from them and never went in, until I did. And now I can't stop going in on my way home from work, late night or not. Maria is a.MA.zing. As in, purely amazing. I gave her 3 ingredients for a cocktail, and she made two of *now* my favourite cocktails of all times. I said, I like gin. Could you please make me anything you want with gin, cracked black pepper (lifelong fetish) and lemon zest? And she did. And now, I can't stop going there, period.

Yelp
I went to Southwark on June 9th with 7 other close friends. Although we had requested seating in the garden we were told that they could only seat parties of 6 or less in the garden. However, it was a gorgeous night and after being seated inside, we were told that they had made special arrangements and had wonderful seating outside for us in the garden at a table that was already prepared. I believe that Marina, the fabulous GM, made it happen. And, it made the night much more special. The food and the service was exceptional. Everyone shared so we got to try many of the dishes. The smoked fish pate, the fried green tomatoes, the breads, the salads, the mussels and the pastas were all absolutely extraordinary. And, the wine from Spain was excellent. We were celebrating the fact that one of us had just gone into remission from cancer and then found out that another one of our friends was going to celebrate his 96th Birthday the next day. We mentioned the B-Day to our waiter or to Marina and were absolutely delighted when they brought out a special B-Day dessert for us along with a candle and a Happy Birthday greeting on the plate in Chocolate. It was a magical evening with friends in a very special place. We will be back many times.
