Southwark is the perfect cozy restaurant for a chilly winter night. I gather that there's a backyard as well, so perhaps it's the perfect restaurant for a temperate summer night, too. Good for all seasons! I put Southwark on my Philly list (I'm from Philly but live in NYC) ages ago and I finally made in here with the family during my last visit home. We had a really enjoyable dinner here, everything we tried was solid at the very least, with a few standouts. Overall, Southwark is a versatile spot, great for a refined but unpretentious meal.
We came here at 8 on a Saturday night as a party of six. The decor is pretty minimal yet it feels very welcoming and homey, particularly in the back room, which feels as if it could have once been somebody's dining room, with cute little paintings of flora and fauna adorning the walls. After a weekend with family I was eager to find the drink menu, which was one of the many aspects of Southwark that attracted me initially. The cocktail menu is pretty varied, featuring an impressive variety of liquors and flavors profiles. I first got the The Lonely Hunter (Gin, Vermouth Blanc, Eden's Herbal Liqueur), as it was the closest thing to a martini I could see on the speciality cocktail list. It definitely was not giving martini as it turns out, mainly because of the herbal liqueur, which was really lovely and aromatic, it just made the drink a bit sweeter than a martini which is why I am making a point of differentiating it. A great drink to start with. I then got the Shadowboxer (Templeton Rye, Apple Brandy, Amari, Sweet Vermouth), which is an Old Fashioned variation. I was between that and the House of Jealous Lovers (Bourbon, Calvados, Sherry, Cocchi di Torino, Maraschino), a Manhattan variation, which someone else in our party got, and I much preferred that. Mine may have just been a bit watered down.
Food-wise, I split everything with my partner to get a larger sampling of the menu. The menu has lots of good options, kind of has farm-to-table vibes and features a ton of seasonal produce which I always appreciate and enjoy. Eats, below:
Local Yellowfin Tuna Crudo w/ Napa Cabbage Slaw, Patio Chilis, Sunchoke Miso Vinaigrette, Sunflower Seed Crumble: A
Really fresh and delicious preparation. All of the accouterments were thoughtful and complemented one another well. I'll always be ordering a crudo or tartare when I see it on the menu and it's nice to get one that features elements other than a sauce or emulsion.
Endives & Beet Salad w/ Roasted Concord Grapes, Pumpkin Seed Purée, Granola, Ginger Vinaigrette: A-
Solid salad with great winter veggies. Not an A because the vinegar notes of the dressing, while not necessarily bad, were a bit overpowering. All of the elements were there for a great salad, the balance was just a bit off. Still enjoyable and we didn't regret ordering it.
Keiser's Pheasantry Duck w/ Confit Sweet Potatoes & Purée, Local Brussels Sprouts, Fig Leaf Jus: A-
Lots of fun stuff going on here - I actually enjoyed the confit more than the duck itself, which was cooked medium instead of medium rare, the latter of which I prefer. Still, duck is one of my favorite things to see on the menu, especially in the colder months, and the flavors were everything you'd want in a duck preparation - some sweetness, some earthiness, some saltiness, rich but not heavy. And it was all beautifully presented.
NJ Tilefish w/ Cauliflower & Lemon Purée, Charred Fioretto Cauliflower, Shellfish Jus, Wilted Greens, Leeks: A
The most memorable dish of the night, loved by everyone at the table who ordered it. The fish itself was cooked perfect, smooth and buttery which was enhanced by the shellfish jus as well as the puree it sat atop of. Delicate yet hearty. Really warming and satisfying, a great plate to end the night on.
