SE Portland Bar the Houston Blacklight Is Closing | Eater Portland

"I fell for this celebrated psychedelic Portland bar when it opened in July 2023 under owners Mariah and Thomas Pisha-Duffly; it quickly earned widespread acclaim for creative cocktails like lime leaf margaritas and popping boba slushies, a genre-bending food menu featuring items such as French onion ramen and mapo tofu fries, and a zany interior of bright upholstery and eclectic neon wallpaper in the former Night Light Lounge space on Southeast Clinton. The bar won Eater PDX’s 2023 Eater Award for Best New Bar and was named by Bon Appétit in 2024 among the best new bars in the country. Despite the buzz, the owners announced on Instagram on October 28 that “The truth is, we love the neighborhood, we love the bar, the team is incredible, but it has never been financially sustainable and we don’t have the resources to give it another go,” and said the last day open would be November 2, with fans able to bid farewell throughout the week culminating in an “end of days RAGER.”" - Brenna Houck

I recently visited this establishment with friends, but we left within an hour due to an overwhelmingly poor experience. While the security personnel were exceptionally courteous, the bartenders and bottle girls exhibited remarkably poor attitudes. The service was subpar, and it seemed that the staff felt they were above providing respectful treatment to customers. I have concerns regarding the legitimacy of this business. We were served a bottle without ice, as they claimed to have run out, and only provided one juice option, requiring us to pay extra for additional options. Furthermore, the glass cups were unclean, and there were bugs present in the pineapple juice. Additionally, they attempted to charge $50 for a birthday sign, despite us having already reserved a section. We repeatedly requested to speak with the manager, who failed to appear, instead denying their role despite being identified by other staff members. This experience was universally disappointing for our group, and we will not be returning. The lack of professionalism and poor service suggest that this establishment may require closer scrutiny.

Worst experience ever, 0 stars if possible. Came all the way from another state to celebrate New Years. Paid $1,000 for a section and this is what we showed up to…not even a section or patio as they claimed, it was more so a backyard in the parking lot, dirty, no music, no heat, workers back there moving furniture in and out and making the hookahs, completely disgusting and not worth the $$. Waited a few and never got any bottles or chasers that we ordered. Was told we can upgrade to a better section for $3500…absolutely not so we requested that we get a refund and all the managers/bottle girls gave us the run around, poor communication, had us standing in the cold from 9-130, told us we had to wait till the end of the night for a refund. If we didn’t harass them and wait around for our refund we would’ve never got it (only gave us $900, not $1,000) Never again!

This was the WORST “birthday” night club I’ve ever had to experience (0/0). The night started with my party arriving prior to 11 PM and not being honored the bottle prices for that time *first red flag*, in addition to the “manager on duty” stating that the price WOULD be honored. After my card and license was taken “for a HOLD, not to be charged,” we were escorted to a section in which a pole obstructed the view. I immediately asked to be moved to the empty section next to us. Once the bottle girl arrived, she stated that we could not sit there being that it had been reserved (after stating that specific sections could not be reserved) *2nd Red Flag*. As a result, I immediately requested a refund (in which I later learned that, that lying bottle girl never relayed my specific request to refund me, but allegedly told the manager that I requested to be moved). She confirmed that forfeiting the section would include receiving a FULL refund. However, once she returned, had offered me an even worst section and charged my card $600.00 *3rd Red Flag*. With the attempt to still celebrate my birthday, I requested to view the section prior to moving forward with receiving a refund. I did not like the section and told her that we would stay in the initial section. She confirmed, and proceeded to set up the section. Moments later she came out with our bottles, and SHE opened them *4th Red Flag* after their little bottle dance SHE poured each of my guests a shot. Shortly after, another party arrived claiming that we were in their section *5th Red Flag*. At this very moment, I demanded a refund and the manager. I was escorted by security to the manager who prolong rectifying the issue by avoiding to speak with me and instructing security to tell me to leave *6th red flag*. While waiting, the remainder of my party was removed from the section by security *7th Red Flag*. They joined me as I waited over a hour to speak with the manager. She avoided me for hours *8th Red Flag*. After refusing to leave without my full refund for no service, section, or bottles, she told a security guard to tell me that she was NOT refunding me because the bottles were opened *9th Red Flag*. Again, her BOTTLE GIRL opened them and took it upon HERSELF to pour shots that no one in my party asked for or had drank. I informed her that I had not opened the bottles nor did we drink the shots poured. Again, she left from speaking with me and instructed security to do her dirty work to remove my guest and I from the venue *10th Red Flag*. This place was completely ghetto. Management was unprofessional and she walked around with a scarf on her head and sweats on. The security team are full of “yes men” and like dogs, do whatever they’re told. Although, the manager was completely wrong. I had been charged an “unauthorized” $600 to stand in a walkway waiting to speak with a manager after playing musical booths the entire night as a result of THEIR UNPROFESSIONAL and UNORGANIZED ways of conducting business. Again, I was NOT provided with a refund in which I continuously requested), bottles, or a section. If you are into being scammed, being in a space full of kids, holes in the seats and floors, then this is the “SPACE”for you!

I wouldn’t patronize here even if they paid me. The security guards are scammers and followed me and my sister into the girls bathroom Because he wanted an extra 20$. Expect to be harassed violated and disrespected when patronizing here. They told us to leave and did not give us a refund so expect to be finessed out of your money too. HOUSTON HAS WAY BETTER TO OFFER AVOID AT ALL COST. Avoid these guards pictured they will follow you into the women's bathroom for 20$

I visited this establishment with friends last weekend, and unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing, leading us to leave within an hour. While the security staff was courteous and professional, the same cannot be said about the service from the bartenders and bottle service team. Their attitude was dismissive and unprofessional, and the level of service fell far below acceptable standards. Several issues stood out during our visit: 1. Unhygienic Practices: We were served drinks in unclean glassware, and bugs were found in the pineapple juice. This raises serious health and safety concerns. 2. Poor Setup: Despite purchasing a bottle, we were informed that there was no ice available. Additionally, only one juice was provided, and we were told we had to pay for additional juice. 3. Unreasonable Fees: Charging $50 for a birthday sign, especially when we had already purchased a section, felt excessive and unwarranted. 4. Lack of Accountability: Despite multiple requests to speak with a manager, no one addressed our concerns. A staff member was eventually identified as the manager, yet they avoided speaking with us directly, despite clearly overseeing transactions and operations. The overall experience suggested a disregard for customer respect and satisfaction. Based on the behavior of the staff and the unacceptable conditions, I cannot recommend this venue and will not be returning. I hope the management addresses these concerns to improve the experience for future patrons.

Sections are completely empty and they refused to sit us in the section they confirmed us with. The staff are extremely ghetto and unknowledgeable. They claim they have no manager on duty. Don't waste your money, the customer service is trash. The staff have clearly not been trained properly and it's very clear the owner cares nothing about the quality of the business, just how much money they can collect. They have open bottles at empty tables with no coverings. This is a bottom of the barrel club. Trash

Celebrated NYE 2025 here and the atmosphere was pleasant but they served us bottom shelf tequila in Don Julio bottles then up charged us for ordering top shelf liquor. Anyone who drinks tequila knows Don Julio has a taste that DOES NOT leave you gagging. Shady business practices.

Every review is accurate and this is a section club, no other shows but heels or will be charged 20$. If you dnt have a section good luck! We paid for a section we got a little table top with hardly any room for drinks! Music was good but still lines wasn’t organized and it’s like tsa frfr to get in! Probably wouldn’t come back unless you have 600$ or better section.
