On the Grid : The Spacing Store

"The Spacing Store began 12 years ago as a public spacing magazine that spotlighted spaces within the city; the magazine developed into a retail store. Located on the ground floor of the 401 Richmond building, you will find items made by local artists and designers reflective of our city. The magazine will always remain the heart of the Spacing brand. Their motto: No Moose. No Beavers." - Jam3

It’s the best gift shop in Toronto! I love their selections that most items are related to Toronto or by artists based in Toronto. There are books, picture books, card, totes, pins, candles and more.

Very cute story with lots of local artistic works representing Toronto and its defining characteristics! Great place to find unique souvenirs (cards and postcards, posters, children’s books, candles, tote bags and accessories, stickers, pins…). I recommend stopping by!

A great selection of classy items related to Toronto. Nice selection of postcards and decorative prints. Several small items and unique merchandise such as pillows featuring places in Toronto.

Google
A great place to purchase beautiful, creative, and quirky souvenirs of Toronto. Offers great gifts, even for Torontonians who want to get to know their city better. You can get books, socks t-shirts, umbrellas, pencil cases, cards and more! I purchased 3 books to help me get to know my home city better. And I love my new City of Toronto raccoon t-shirt #staycation

Google
Really nice store with unique gifts especially for the Toronto lovers in your life. There's so many TTC items and lots of local artists with their own spin on the day-to-day life of Toronto. Call ahead to check but definitely worth browsing for gifts! They have items ranging from products used for the kitchen, home decor, toys and puzzles to list a few. The items are pretty well priced as well. Definitely worth stopping by!

Google
they have the most adorb city planning / design related products - books souvenirs and design-y posters. loved the collection.

It's a nice gift shop, we were looking for a little gifts to get, and we found some unique gifts 😊, place was well organized and maintained, nicely decorated and designed, friendly customer service, very satisfied with our visit.

Lots of great books about Toronto, everything from history to architecture, to walking tours. There is also Toronto merchandise such as Raccoons versus Toronto t-shirts, candles with neighborhood names, and TTC-themed items. Friendly people too.

Yelp
The spacing store is one of those places that I like to keep secret, because not a lot of people know about it. And, this is a shame because everyone should know about it. However, at the same time the gifts that I can buy there are so unique that people have no idea where they came from and so you get a lot of social credibility from it. That said, if you are looking for beautiful art prints of all the neighborhoods in toronto, you can come here. If you are looking for passports to Toronto libraries, or cafes, you can come here. If you are looking for children's books about the city, or TTC related clothing and pins, or niche Toronto merchandise, this is the best store in the city. You're not going to find any better patches to sew onto your coats or bags, any better keychains, magnets, books on local history, or even games. The store is absolutely worth your time. And, if you are showing some guests around toronto, it is worth stopping in here too. Plus, it's on such a perfect walking tour of the city that why would you pass it up?

Yelp
What a lovely shop! Unlike those random run-down souvenir shops around the city which sell ordinary Canadian things like maple syrup, maple cookies, smoke salmon, or key chains, this shop carries stylish, memorable, and unique items that you want to give others to introduce to Toronto! The store is in an art hub building @ 401 Richmond, carefully selecting Canadian and Toronto-themed souvenirs/gifts designed by local artists. Bought a tea towel with different TTC station signages. It was for a person who was leaving Toronto :) It was a big hit! Feels good when I can give a Canadian gift that I knew would be appreciated, and I would also like to receive from others :).

Yelp
Great curated souvenir shop to avoid the cheesy and cheap alternatives. I loved the local books for adults and kids, the trash panda themes (from t-shirts to wall art), to local artist and collectibles. The place has a lot of character and ethical practice-based businesses producing goods. The textiles are high quality. There is variance of price from inexpensive ($4 Childrens food mats) to modest ($15-30 shirts) to very expensive here ($75 rice cast car collectibles).

Yelp
Cute shop with Toronto souvenirs of everything ranging from t-shirts to novels to children's books to keychains and buttons. The only thing I'd say about this store is that it's for Toronto natives who have an affection for things like the local Toronto mascot of raccoons to the neighborhoods and local subway stops. Some of the designs are from a particular company and are repetitive throughout the different forms like keychains, t-shirts and recyclable bags. It's true the prices are a little bit expensive but you have to expect that with a specialty store. I wish they had a little bit more products that represented the diversity of the city. It's nice for a browse. You might find something that personally represents your connection to Toronto. Minimal parking nearby. No street parking in this area.

Yelp
While making my way to Spadina yesterday I passed by the Spacing Store for the first time and knew I immediately had to go in. This is a little store kind of tucked away (or maybe I'm usually just blind?) but full of awesome Toronto based merchandise inside like posters, pins, t-shirts, patches, pencils, and even dog leashes! I spent a good 15-20 minutes here yesterday and browsing and finally settled on an air freshener for myself and a few little things for Tianna C as well. Overall, I would put this right up there with Cry Wolf for being some of the coolest little merch shops in the downtown area, this is definitely worth checking out!

Yelp
So, total disclosure, I use this store for my work in customer care bit I like it in addition to that because, well, its a cool shop! Usually when one lives in a city other than New York, and even then, you don't go around wearing stuff about your own city. That's for the tourists. But when the stuff is this interesting and cool, you just gotta' break that rule! One of the things they have are these cool posters from a local artist that are highlights of the Raptors championship run in 2019. Really unique and one of a kind. They have these cool mugs and Insulated bottles with the badge of your neighborhood or favorite TTC subway station (who would've thought anything could make THAT cool??). TTC token cuff links, t-shirts with the outline of a streetcar, toy streetcars and artwork, and all sorts of Toronto based artwork that as a Torontonian, I'd be proud to frame and put up on my walls. Its a specialty shop, so prices can be high for some items, but its important to support your local and this is it. Side note: If you're looking for stuff for kids, they have some cool TTC streetcar toys (plastic and cardboard) and shirts, and buttons and knapsack. And books for all ages! Its a very cool space. Go check 'em out!

Yelp
I appreciated the selection of TORONTO items. Employee (owner?) very polite, friendly. Unfortunately with boutique shops I often find the items 5-20 bucks overpriced, there were a few toronto posters, etc I wanted but didn't want enough for the price tag. I respect most of this stuff is designed, created locally; unfortunately I find it hard to pay around 30 bucks for a tshirt.

Yelp
Spacing Store is a shop in the basement of 401 Richmond Street West that focuses on showcasing memorabilia, clothing, literature and art that demonstrates hometown pride. Almost every product is emblazoned with the name 'Toronto' on it, or has something to do with being a Torontonian living in Canada. It's full of unique items that appeal to various tastes. Gift shoppers might want to stop here to get something rare and inspiring for their family and friends. Most things are moderately priced, and a lot of the products are designed by local brands here in Canada. It's a nicely curated collection of souvenirs that represent where we live.

Yelp
Very cool shop dedicated to Toronto (and city) love. Tons of neat things to browse including books, bags, shirts, and coasters. My favourite things in this shop are the prints. They are awesome and there are many to choose from. They definitely have some neighbourhood representation going on as well. If you want to get something that is Toronto themed come here! The stuff is not tacky nor touristy. In fact, it feels to me like the collection they carry is very true to Toronto. The TTC token cufflinks are a neat find for a serious gift. Stop in! You'll walk out with something quintessentially TO!

Yelp
I've emailed the store 3 times asking about future availability of products that have been showing as out of stock on their site, and have never received a response. They've got the email address prominently displayed on their page - spacingstore@spacing.ca - but either they don't look at it, or just can't be bothered to respond. Ignoring a customer who wants to give them money doesn't seem like a particularly good way to start a new business...
