Seven Months In, How Is Echo Park Restaurant Poltergeist Doing? | Eater LA

"As a potential fallback idea, Argoti wants to recreate the BLT from Spanglish as a centerpiece dish — he describes it as something they’ve obsessively practiced in the kitchen (including watching the Thomas Keller YouTube clip from the movie), planning to make their own bread and price the sandwich at around $30 if needed." - Farley Elliott

Google
Superb Mexican restaurant that is very affordable and incredible value. You order and pickup at a counter but they have some outdoor seating around the corner. The selection is huge and everything is very reasonably priced. The fish burrito was so satisfying, tasty and soft and warm. The balance was perfect with everything in the burrito. They get pretty busy and had to wait around 10 minutes for the burrito but it was worth it. Order ahead if you are in a rush.

Have only been here 2x and have ordered the chicken salad each time. Good amount of chicken, cooked and seasoned well. Salad fixings are fresh and importantly, the avocado was ripe. The lime dressing is really tasty. Could've used more, but that's probably just me. I like alot of dressing 😀 I would recommend placing your order ahead of time if possible because it seems you can expect a bit of a wait time. Luckily they have a lovely patio which is aesthetically pleasing and is a nice buffer to the busy adjacent street. Made the wait much more pleasant.

I got the chilaquiles with chicken. Great portion size and taste. The agua frescas were great as well. A little bit of a wait but the seating area was nice.

Google
My friend recommended this spot and it definitely hit the spot for lunch. I ordered their rib eye taco and their Spanglish buger in a lettuce wrap. The taco was phenomenal and had the right amount of seasoning, cooked perfectly and a good amount of meat pieces. The burger was excellent also and it was very flavorful and the chips were phenomenal. I’d definitely come back here again to try their other menu items.

Google
So so overall. We got some food for takeout and was happy with some of it but not impressed with others. The fish tacos and shrimp tacos were quite good!! Everything else was mediocre at best. We got the al pastor tacos, beef tacos and chicken tacos which were mediocre at best. Finally we also got the veggie nachos which were so so - too many beans for my taste. Giving 3 stars because their prices were quite good. I don’t think I’ll be going back there.

Google
I really like this place, but they changed their online ordering and it never works anymore. I used to order here at least once a week, usually twice. Always get the Pozole on weekends. But since they switched from Toast, the online ordering is always broken in some way and doesn't work. You can order there, but the wait time can be long, and I order a burrito with a lot of customizations, just some much easier online to do all that than yelling it at them from outside through the window, and then waiting in the hot sun for 20 minutes. Oh well.....

Google
service can be hit or miss, but the food is excellent and typically fast. i recommend having a bell for customers to ring bc i have stood in front of the cash register for 5-10 minutes directly in front of the staff before receiving service. but otherwise a very positive experience

Google
Delicious, authentic street-style tacos without the ghetto LA surroundings or vibe 😂🤭 $1 tacos on Tuesday. But prices aren't bad at all regardless. I definitely reccomend! Perfect meal after our hike! We got 2 beef tacos, 1 pork (I forget which one) taco and 1 fried fish taco (was a bit spicy for my low tolerance but the fish was delicious).

Yelp
Tasty little spot with plenty of options for meat lovers and vegetarians. I appreciate the intention of having a veggie option for most items and the tacos and breakfast burrito and the horchata cold brew have all been enjoyed multiple times. The potato taco is probably my favorite. Only improvement area is that the vegetarian options at least (I can't speak for the meat sauced items) are all pretty much not seasoned at all so the flavor has to come from adding salsa or seasoning yourself. Don't be shy on adding flavor to your recipes guys! Will be sure to come back again and try more items. Thanks Spanglish Kitchen!

Yelp
Rating for my recent visit. Delicious! Craved a bit of everything today . The caldo de pollo on a cool October night. The saltines off an asada taco, and the sauce in the enchiladas. The caldo de pollo- broth was delicious, portioned well (can't wait to take it to work tomorrow! Asada taco(seasoned and cooked well) Chicken enchiladas- got the spicy, does have a kick to it that does not linger, the beans and rice were soo good together. Horchata hit the spot! I just wished I ordered tortilla chips to dip my food in them.
google avatar

Pamela S.

Yelp
I got the chorizo and eggs plate, chips and guac, and pineapple agua fresca. I thought everything was delicious, though the chorizo and eggs seemed a bit too salty after a while. The plate came with tortillas and was enough for two servings. This is basically a to-go spot with some outdoor seating, super casual but not fast food. I would come back and try other dishes.

Yelp
I've been a loyal customer for over 5 years, it's been my go to spot l, a lovely gem. I really enjoy their habanero sauce it's the best! However, for the last few months they've been very inconsistent with the portions and have had a few errors in my order. Each burrito is close to $18 and at times I've found myself with 3 shrimps for $3.00? Extra meat is 2.25, avocado $1.25 and lettuce is .50.. so why am I paying all of these additional charges if I find myself not getting what I paid for? The money isn't the issue, I'm hoping that I get what I pay for. I also understand if it's a one time issue because they're "busy" and they're trying to keep up with the rush, but for the past few months? It's now considered robbery at this point. A bit dramatic, but that's how I feel. I'm sorry, but I'm going to stop coming here and I had recommended this place to so many people. It's just a shame.

Yelp
Pretty good! Expectations were moderate given the location and the appearance of the business. I ordered the bbq chicken plate which came with salad and rice on the side. The salad dressing is phenomenal!!! I love the tartness and the little kick it provided. The salad was super fresh. The rice was good but have had better Spanish rice. The chicken was super juicy which was a huge plus but the bbq sauce was not needed. Maybe a dry rub would have sufficed. The salsas came in mild, medium and death. The green one was my favorite. The death spice has habanero so just be warned, need a super high tolerance or your tastebuds will die. Enjoyed the experience and the outdoor dining was not terrible. No indoor dining space. The outdoor space was next to a busy street but at least the privacy hedges provided a barrier from the traffic to your dining experience. There is a bit of a wait though. I think because the food is made fresh to order which i don't mind and there's a line! Anyway, I enjoyed the dressing so much, I'll definitely will be back for more salads.

Yelp
I was hungry an indecisive what to eat so I was driving in the are and I saw Spanglish kitchen again I got what. Got last time and it made the job, I left happy and full Service is not the greatest but you know what I guess is a new thing where the younger generation works in a different way. They are not friendly and they work at their own paste with out the sense of urgency, it took 30 min for my food The ambience is great since they have music and a little side patio

Yelp
I have been wanting to try this place for awhile. Today, I tried it and was not disappointed. I ordered the barbecue chicken plate with cilantro rice and salad. Very tasty and healthy. The chicken sauce was decent. Could of been a little more flavorful. Overall, the chicken was tender. The service was good and the place is cute. They have a small outdoor seating area. Definitely going back to try other food items.
google avatar

Yelp
Marked this place for a long time and finally got to try on a Friday evening! I got four tacos (grilled shrimp, lengua, asada, and pastor). My favorite is probably the lengua, super tender and juicy! The pastor is really good as well with tropical flavors. My least favorite might be the asada - the meat is a bit too chewy for me. They do prepare the food fresh so expect a 15 min wait if you didn't order ahead of time. If you are in a rush, make sure to order ahead! There is a little outdoor dining area at the back that's super nice during sunset! There is a small parking lot that's shared but there are also street parking nearby.

Yelp
Came here for lunch I wanted to try there enchiladas but then I saw they had a ribeye taco for 10.50 a taco and got curious so I got both! Although I feel like they skimped me on the toppings of my rib eye taco this ingredient collaboration is amazing! this is like a quesaribeye taco. They melt the cheese on top of the corn tortilla on the grill and serve the most delicious tastiest meat on top with what it should have been guacamole and cilantro !! But for some reason they skimped me .......,,. Lol still delicious!! The enchiladas on the other hand ... they were ok I wasn't feeling the sauce too much too much tomatillo... the beans were bland and the rice was ok... i definitely came back for the tacos tho! Scrumptious ! The staff is very nice the seating is outside on the side and it's limited A lot of ppl are picking up to go from here. The parking lot is super small as well and always packed. But the tacos are worth it I've also tried the chicken burrito from here they use chopped up chicken pieces which I love
google avatar

Yelp
Great outdoor seating with six tables for four, all nicely shaded! The environment is clean and inviting. They offer a variety of salsas to suit every taste--mild, medium, and spicy. My favorite was definitely the spicy one. The horchata cold brew and pineapple drink were both tasty and authentic, though a bit on the sweet side for me. The asada breakfast burrito gets an 8.5/10 from me, and the chorizo one a 8.5/10 from my wife. Overall, really good spot--I'd come back. Portion sizes are just right, not too big or small.

Yelp
I stopped by for lunch. There were a couple people waiting to get their orders taken. They were taking phone orders at the same time so there was a bit of a hold. My partner and I ordered the carnitas chilaquiles, a lengua taco, and a crispy fish taco. The food was solid. I liked how crispy the fish taco was! The only draw back I have was that the tacos were on the pricier side compared to the prices of street tacos. There's parking right in front of the stall, however due to its shared space with other shops, there is very limited parking spots. There is a small lot behind that only allows for 30 mins parking. Street parking is available! There's no indoor seating but there's a couple tables and chairs for outdoor seating. It's alongside the street so you will get some traffic alongside you if you decide to sit and dine.

Yelp
Unfortunately, the carne asada torta is no longer savory or well prepared anymore. It's more on the bland side with chewy meat. Furthermore the chips are missing more seasoning. Not sure why the changes were made.
google avatar

Maria F.

Yelp
I got the milanesa torta with fries and it did not disappoint. The torta was crispy, flavorful, and stacked with just the right amount of toppings. The bread held everything together without getting soggy, and the meat was tender with great seasoning. The fries were hot, crispy, and actually seasoned well, not just tossed on the side as an afterthought. Everything came out fresh and fast, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. If you're craving something that feels homemade and satisfying, this place delivers. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu. I was honestly so hungry and it was so good that I didn't take a picture.
google avatar

Yelp
I came late at night (~8pm) and tried out a few other things on the menu. The one setback is that it's definitely better to order ahead because I ended up waiting 25-30 minutes in the cold before my food arrived. In terms of the food, it was delicious. Carne Asada Enchilladas - Simple but yet so delicious. It's made well and its simply a classic. (4/5) Shrimp Burrito - LOVED THIS. It reasonably packed but the flavors were great. I ordered beans on the side and they gave us a huge container of them. Would get again! (5/5) Overall besides the wait, the food is pretty good here. Plan ahead and you can have the food ready by the time you get here. Seating is all outside and in their small patio. No option for tip which is pretty nice. Parking - Small lot shared with other nearby stores.

Yelp
I love the food here and I love my crispy shrimp taco and I ordered today. The Carnitas torta which I have ordered so many times cause it's so delicious and I continue to order it even though they've cut back a lot on how much meat they have in it but today I don't know what happened. It's like somebody I mean it was so excessive. It was like the top came off the salt shaker while they were pouring it there was so much salt that it burnt my tongue when I was eating it. It was almost inedible, and I have to try and control myself, and I finish the whole thing in one setting usually I'm saying this has a heads up cause I don't know what happened really the salt was so of that and I love salt that it had to have been something got messed up so I just want to give you heads up so you better check that out. I don't think it was during preparation. I don't know. I'm mostly missed the delight. I was expecting because I had anticipated it.

Yelp
If you are in the mood for a PERFECTLY wrapped burrito, filled with dissapointment and flavorless beans this place is for you. The customer service is odd and the food is decent if you are starving. I took a chance with the Al pastor burrito and it was disappointing. Maybe the other menu items are better, I probably won't be coming back.
google avatar

Jess B.

Yelp
We decided to eat here on a Friday late night and it was okay. I always drive by this place and was curious about their food. I ordered 2 shrimp tacos and carne asada fries. I ordered two shrimp tacos and had the salsas on top. The shrimp was cooked well and tasted better with the salsas. I was most disappointed with the carne asada fries. The fries were soggy and flavorless. The carne asada was a little tough and was also flavorless. I probably finished maybe 1/4 of it and couldn't bring myself to finish the whole thing. Overall, it was okay. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place. If I'm in a pinch or there's nothing open, I might choose to eat here.
google avatar

Sevak S.

Yelp
The food and everything was alright and I don't mind paying, but they only filled up the 3/4 of my cup and 1/2 of it was ice.at the moment I didn't even ask him to fill up the cup properly because I felt like a begger while I paid almost 5$ for the horchata. As I said I don't mind if you charging me, charge me 6_7_8$ but give me what you charged me for.
google avatar

Jenny S.

Yelp
Overall the food is pretty good. I got the shrimp burrito, the shrimp is big and it's flavorful. But I found a piece of shrimp shell inside and I wanted my burrito to cut in half but they didn't. I would try their other items next time.
google avatar

Jonathan W.

Yelp
Take credit card. There's outdoor seating Potato taco $3.25- crispy taco shell. Good for vegetarians. A little small.. Al pastor taco $2.95- pretty good Al pastor meat. I'd get this again Lengua taco $3.75- also meat is cooked well, soft. Chorizo taco $2.95- average flavor. I wish there was more meat. Pastor sope $6- there's a slice of avocado. The base is good flavor with good texture. Skirt steak burrito $19- the skirt steak is cooked well. Burrito is a little small, I wish it was larger.

Yelp
Spanglish Kitchen is a casual Mexican spot located on the corner of Atlantic and Alhambra which can be a busy intersection. It is easy to miss but there's a parking lot there which makes things more accessible. Seating is outdoors on the side of the building where food is picked up. Came here on a weeknight with some friends and it was not busy. We decided to pre-order our food so it was ready when we arrived. I ordered a Crispy Fish Taco and a Chicken Torta. The fish taco was really good. The batter was light and crispy, and the fish was fresh. It came on a corn tortilla with cabbage and pico de gallo. The torta was okay. It was a good portion and the bread was soft but the torta was a bit dry and not as flavorful as I was expecting. They give three different salsas -- habanero, red, and green. The habanero one has a good kick to it. Adding salsa to the torta definitely made it better. Overall, giving Spanglish Kitchen a 4/5. Would recommend to anyone looking for Mexican food in the area. Would come back to try other items on the menu. My friend had the ribeye tacos and really enjoyed them.
google avatar

Rose F.

Yelp
I really enjoy the food at this local spot. I give them credit for being creative with their menu. First, the corn tortillas are handmade on the premises This alone sets them above other similar eateries. They are not "fast food," like big chain restaurants. I believe the secret is in the seasoning and marinade of their meats and sauces. They serve the tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas and sopes. On my last visit, they were promoting a new item. The Chuleton, which was their creation of a short-rib taco with cheese, guacamole and cilantro. It sounded good to me, I ordered one plus a sope. These two items were filling and delicious. The Chuleton was a bit pricy at $9.99 each, so you may not want two or three of these! Please support small business, it's not easy to run a restaurant and be successful. There's a lot of competition and choices when we go out to eat. They are located on the corner of a small shopping center, a few parking spaces in front. Order for take out or enjoy in the outdoor patio. I am confident you will find their service and food to be above average and worth a visit. Don't forget to tell'em that Rosemary sent ya!

Bryan P.

Yelp
I'm currently hooked on their carne asada breakfast burritos ! They're very consistent . I've also tried the chorizo burrito and it is also fire. Reasonable priced as well. Would recommend o

Anthony V.

Yelp
Food tastes good overall -- definitely better than your average taco truck. The burrito was solid, the fries were really good, and the mild salsa had great flavor. The tacos were okay, and the torta felt like it was missing something, just not as flavorful as the rest. What brought the experience down a bit was the service. The person taking my order didn't greet me, had an earphone in, and couldn't really hear me. She just seemed annoyed or pissed off, which made the whole interaction feel uncomfortable I'd still come back for the food, but the customer service could definitely be better.
google avatar

Andrea B.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that I ordered food from here through a delivery service, so I had no in person interaction with staff, nor did I see the restaurant itself. With that said, I loved the food!! I got the pastor breakfast burrito and it was delish! The green salsa and the pico de gallo were yummy! There was a nice kick to the green salsa, but nothing too crazy. I also got a side of chips and guac and I have to say, it was probably one of my favorite restaurant guacamoles ever! Plus, you could tell the chips were fresh, making it even better! Definitely will be going in person next time to try out more things!
google avatar

Sylvia L.

Yelp
A little disappointed in the quality of food this time. Spanglish kitchen use to be my go to, which is why I am so sad for my two unpleasant experiences. $17 shrimp salad portion was very skimped, and the quality of it being made was lacking. It looked and tasted as if they were in a rush and just threw it all together. The avocado was missing and salad was drenched in dressing. I couldn't eat it, as it was watery from all the dressing. Had a picnic event to rush to so didn't have time to go back, but I gave a two star because the young lady at the pick up counter was very attentive and friendly. At this point, I feel it might be a hit or miss. Hope you have a yummier experience.
google avatar

Nathan G.

Yelp
Very tasty hole in the wall, window service and tables outside Mexican joint: Several tacos were all good, fish and carnitas and carne asada all on point. I had never had a huarache before - sort of a flat bread with (in my case) al pastor that was delicious. Horchata on point. Definitely a good place to get your taqueria fix.
google avatar

Nadeen T.

Yelp
My wife and I stumbled in after driving through Montebello and visiting Amy's Bakery for delicious pastries. The was an eclectic neighborhood lunch crowd outside and my wife has been wanting to stop here. We were hungry and pleasantly satisfied! She ordered a carne asada burrito and I tried the ribeye taco. (The ribeye was not as tender as I was expecting but still very hearty.) Both were packed with familiar and delicious flavors! I want to try their Pozole next time (available on Sat-Sun). We'll be back on the next trip!
google avatar

Yelp
I been to this place about 3 times before so I'm very disappointed to say what my last experience was . I normally have gotten their shrimp burritos and their tacos and they were good but tonight i got chicken enchiladas and my son got shrimp enchiladas, the chicken was so nasty undercooked and looked slimy , my son said his food was just ok , but I had to take my food and put it in my oven to cook it more I took most of the filling out and left what chicken looked decent . I do like this place but I wouldn't recommend enchiladas
google avatar

Julia K.

Yelp
Spanglish should be called "Bubba Gump's" because you never know what you're gonna get. Used to be. One of our favorite spots for a clean but flavor packaged burritos. But in the last year or so - this place has totally fallen off. I keep giving it a chance because I really did love it. But half the time the order is either wrong, the shrimp are dry and overcooked, beans are missing, etc etc. sometimes it's delicious but most times it's disappointing. I expect more from Spanglish/ Especially for the price!

Patricia L.

Yelp
Spanglish has delicious food and a wide variety of options. Veggie options are excellent. Carnitas really good. Love Spanglish.

Cory S.

Yelp
I wanted to give 3.5 stars. The food was good. However, like some of the other comments, it was slightly lacking in flavor. But I would go back. I was happy with the food. Potato taco was good, a little bland. Al pastor, had no pineapple. Whole reason we got it. Grilled fish taco was aight, dry. Asada fries were definitely dry BUT the fries were perfectly cooked. So with a ton of hot sauce and ketchup, they weren't too bad.
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
I always order to go since I don't live far sometimes menudo other times burrito theres a generous portion of meat on menudo and the burrito is a meal by itself I feel satisfied everytime the service is fast and employees are very courteous

Don Z.

Yelp
We ordered shrimp and fish tacos. Food did not seem old, but bland and stunningly forgettable. Service was indifferent upon ordering and the six tacos took about 25 minutes. In regards, to ambiance, there is none. I don't see how anyone would come back.
google avatar

Lucia L.

Yelp
I only tried their Al pastor tacos and it was pretty dry and didn't taste fresh. The salsas were also not memorable lol so wouldn't recommend the Al pastor meat here!
google avatar

Jannette H.

Yelp
Love this place, always have since they opened. My family keeps coming back. The flavor is perfect, the staff is so friendly. Kim was so helpful, thanks for everything. Also had a perfect shaded here to enjoy your meal!
google avatar

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Love the flan! My go to place for menudo on the weekend. Unfortunately you don't get tortillas but I am ok with it since it adds carbs. lol. The bacon breakfast burritos are a must and sopes.
google avatar

Nicolas J.

Yelp
Enchiladas are the best thing here and the bbq chicken. Some other stuff I've tried but they were 1 time tries to put it nicely. Not a bad spot though. Parking lot gets tight during peak hours especially due to the neighboring businesses like the liquor store or smoke shop. Orders can be placed ahead of time which is a time saver. Small outside dining area for dining in. Not a bad spot though and a friendly price for decent food.
google avatar

Karla R.

Yelp
Spanglish Kitchen is OK. I've been curious about this spot for a minute so when my friend asked if I wanted to go and after he raved about it, I was excited to finally try it I'm not hating on this spot by any means, but I just wasn't blown away. I ordered nachos (no meat) and enjoyed them. They weren't terrible or anything, but they were just alright. Their agua de sandia was a bit too sweet for my liking, though I wouldn't be the first to tell my friends I want to go here but if they say want to go, I wouldn't be opposed, either. There's a decent amount of parking here and a nice side patio for seating
google avatar

Susan W.

Yelp
Despite the other star reviews. The food was terrible. The food was dry. The guacamole appeared old. I had high expectation especially since it is such a small spot, I figured good food would be served. Parking is very difficult.

Yelp
BE CAREFUL!! I love their grilled fish burrito and grilled shrimp tacos BUT... Ive gotten food poisoning the last two times I ordered it (a week apart) the first time, I had the runs for almost a full day. the 2nd time, had the runs for a few hours (it was the only food I had eaten that day). Besides that, i've enjoyed their carne asada & al pastor burritos/tacos. their potato taco was very yummy too. Their watermelon aqua Fresca was delicious. Their menu prices are not displayed anywhere (online or in person) which is annoying. You'll receive a very small discount if you pay with cash. They have 3 sauces that are all yummy (the green one is my favorite). They have an outdoor eating area. Parking is decent n I have never had an issue finding parking. It is conveniently located next to a smoke shop and a liquor store. I'm not sure I would ever order any seafood there again; they are either using old seafood or have unsanitary conditions.
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Online ordering is a breeze - but accuracy of estimated timing can be hit or miss. My faves are their breakfast burritos, the fried fish taco (soft taco) and the potato taco which has a hard shell. I would pass on the fried shrimp taco in the future since it's not a great value. My last order came with 2 small shrimp. On the other hand the fried fish taco comes with a huge fried fillet and is very tasty. There are so many food options in this area but Spanglish works for a large group of people because it has a wide variety of options including salads which I don't see at many Mexican restaurants.
google avatar

Mari K.

Yelp
Got the chicken burritos on uber eats and it was amazing. So tasty. I'd definitely come back here. Size is small but the portions are filling. Guacamole is so fresh, so divine. Would come here to try more items!!

Senbon Z.

Yelp
The young woman with glasses who helped me on 8/20/25 was incredibly sweet and deserves recognition for her kindness and professionalism. Previously, I rated Spanglish Kitchen lower because of their use of black plastic containers and utensils, which are concerning due to potential health risks. That being said, I want to give credit where it's due: the food itself is consistently very tasty, and I really enjoy the flavors. I was happy to see that they've already upgraded their food containers to the eco-friendly brown cardboard ones--that's a great step forward! My only remaining concern is their continued use of black plastic utensils. Once they move away from those as well, I'll gladly update my rating to a full 5 stars. For now, I'll keep it at 2/5, but I truly hope they make this last change because the food and service deserve nothing less than top marks. 5.

Yelp
Generous portion size, easy online ordering via Uber - took a bit longer than originally estimated but not a big deal. Enjoyed the crispy shrimp tacos best. Crispy fish tacos could've done with a bit more sauce, and lengua tacos were a bit bland, but addressed by using more salsa.

Yelp
Could be Good eats but too many mistakes ordering thru an app like yelp (ordering ahead) there's always something missing 1 or 2 items. (Not cheap for a walk up) and ordering at the counter takes forever.. no way to check quality control! Does anyone else go through this or feel this way? it's hard to get a hold of a person when calling about a mistake on the Order!!! Ugh! Frustrated customer!

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this spot for awhile and I finally made it there. I ordered a chicken torta and a couple of tacos: fish and shrimp. I also got an agua de piña. It did not disappoint. The torta was tasty. The breaded chicken had the right seasoning and was cooked just right. Not too crispy but enough to taste the crunch. If that makes sense. The torta is accompanied by what seemed to be house made potato chips. These were also delicious! The tacos we also great! Especially the fish taco. La agua de piña was also legit! I recommend this spot. I will return and try other menu options. Importantly, the prices are reasonable too. The only downside is that I sat outside in their eating area on a day and time that the temperature was in the upper 90's. Overall, I'm definitely going back.
