Chicago Bars With Friday Vibes All Week Long | Eater

"For those who want to unwind from a busy week in a friendly pub surrounded by friends, good music, and the occasional trivia night, there’s Spartan Ale House. This neighborhood spot has all the trappings of a good time, from a rotating menu of comfort foods (think: warm soft pretzels with beer cheese) to special events like dueling pianos and ladies night out, and of course, big TVs to watch your favorite game. Cocktails, like a smooth and complex Bombay Sapphire Sparkling Lemon, are exactly what you’ll need to switch into Friday mode." - Ariel Kanter

The food itself was good — we ordered the Red Eye burgers, but both came out missing the hash browns they were supposed to include. Service was the real issue. If it weren’t for the guy working the bar stepping in, we probably wouldn’t have been waited on at all. There were plenty of waitresses walking around, yet not a single one acknowledged us. It didn’t seem overly busy aside from a private party, so there’s really no excuse for being ignored. Disappointing experience overall, especially with decent food that deserved better service.

Eric Blazek

Google
A decent sports bar with plenty of huge TVs and tasty appetizers, like the "cheese bricks" & fried pickles. Chicken skewers are better than expected and come with pita wedges. Solid beer list with rotating monthly drafts, service has been fine for the most part. Look for the (original) Big Ten flags as you walk in! Spartan Ale House is definitely worth checking out when you're in the mood for a cold pint & bar bite.

Our server, Sam, is very attentive and nice to us! I came for the first time for trivia with friends. Originally, we didn’t have a ‘reserved’ table but they accommodated us. We’re very grateful because we were so excited to finally support Go4It Entertainment (who we knew in Florida)! The food was yum! We got the mediterranean bowl, lamb burger, pickle app, and dessert. I forgot to take photos (which is VERY unusual of me, but here we are). 10/10 vibes and food!

Google
A nice relaxed location for a meal or just a drink. We ordered Chicken Skewers which were very tender. Definitely recommended. Also Barbecue Stacked Burger (without the bacon) and the Mushroom Burger. All tasted very good. Overall, the place is very lively place with great friendly service. You will find Katie on most nights taking care of the tables in the back by the bar area as well as tending to people at the bar also. Doing it all without her smile ever fading 😊 You definitely want to try out this local outfit. Recommended 👍

Google
First time dining. We stopped for dinner, expecting just the normal bar food. But we were surprised that the food was really good. I ordered the Lemon Chicken, and my wife ordered the Shrimp grain bowl. We enjoyed it all, and the service was great! It's a return spot when in the area.

Google
Got to restaurant and sat down. Not given a beer menu until waitress came by. Ordered food and drink. Nachos didn’t have a lot of toppings, very bland. Ordered chicken sliders and got beef which were okay. Wife got bbq chicken flatbread which was also okay. Tasted like buffalo chicken. Fries are all heavily seasoned and a bit undercooked. Don’t plan on going back.

Google
The food was GREAT! I would give 5 stars if I wasn’t mislead about trivia on Tuesdays (a digital ad at my sister’s apt). The server did explain it was moved to Thursdays 7-10pm. Going to check that out. Oh and kids eat fee on Tuesdays! Make sure to check their hours, I don’t believe they’re open until after 4pm on weekdays.

Alexis

Google
I originally came because I seen advertising for family feud night on Tuesdays. Only when I got there it was changed to Thursdays. Since I was already there I obviously was going to eat. I got the salmon bowl absolutely delicious and kids had pizza off kids menu. Drinks had me feeling right. Price was fair and waiter was nice.

Yelp
HOP-LITE Just as the foot soldiers of ancient Greece wielded a spear & shield, Spartan Ale House charges into battle with a pint of beer &....a cheese brick?? After driving past this sports bar on Route 59 many times over the years, I finally came here with my wife for a quick dinner date. The venue itself is cool and the building has some funky features to it, like a castle turret on the outside façade. Inside, it's nice and spacious. Almost TOO spacious. Their $5 draft-of-the-month was a Goose Island pocket pilsner. My wife got a few pints of Bells Oberon (which is in season now!) for $7.50/ea. It wasn't very busy so our server was able to bring out two more rounds in a timely manner, however they never gave us water. Spartan cheese bricks (5 for $15) are much larger than your standard mozza stick. Squares of 1/2" thick mozzarella are deep fried in a tempura-like batter and served with marinara; we loved this variation on a classic bar bite. The Greek-style chicken skewers ($15) were tasty, they came with tzadziki and pita wedges. As much as we enjoyed the fried pickles ($12), the cayenne ranch dipping sauce was overpowering. Whoever made that batch did so with a very heavy hand on the seasoning, and after one bite I looked at my wife to say "uhhh honey FYI, they went way too hard on the cayenne". One brief coughing fit later, she agreed. Bread = 4 Circuses = 4 There's your typical array of large TV's showing all manner of sports, and I appreciated them flying collegiate flags representing the original Big Ten lineup (none of this Rutgers or UCLA crap). I can definitely see myself coming back to watch Boilermaker basketball or one of Purdue's early season football games on their outdoor patio. * TL;DR * Naperville may have over 260 places to dine at, but Spartan Ale House is worth checking out. The daily drink specials are great, so even if $6 Moscow Mule Mondays aren't your bag, there's $4 pint Tuesdays and $5 bloody mary's on the weekend (plus $3 domestic bottles Sat-Sun). The food we tried was better than average and I'm looking forward to getting a burger next visit. Cool place, definitely recommended.

Yelp
Waited a long time -20 mins- for service on a Sunday night. Place was pretty empty. We were the only table and maybe 4 people at the bar . They were out of French onion soup- boo. That's actually the reason we went . Ended up with wings - they were ok, not amazing. Waited again for over 20 mins for the check . I won't bother going back.

Yelp
Food was really good the Mediterranean rice was alright. The Redeye burger was awesome. Service was pretty good the waitress was nice. However food did take awhile to come out even though there wasn't many people there. Ambiance was nice, lots of TVs.

Yelp
We love going here for date nights or even with our 3 year old. Great food and good atmosphere.

Yelp
Good food and prices. Nice clean atmosphere Outdoor seating. Full venue been going for a long time. Large bar seating

Yelp
Service. Was above and beyond awesome! Katie made sure we got everything we needed. Always with a smile and help to answer all our question. Food was delicious Will definitely eat here again

Yelp
I recently dropped in to Spartan Ale House and I have to say it's a great spot for a late night visit. I'm glad to see that they are now open later into the evening as this place not only offers a fantastic variety of dishes, but also provides exceptional service. Madeline was our waitress last night and she was highly attentive and personable. We've been there twice now and both times I ended up getting the Spartan grilled cheese simply because I liked it so much the first time that I couldn't refuse it the second. Maybe one of these days I'll venture out and try something different! Overall, definitely two thumbs up from this guy and I'd recommend this place without any reservation.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere with sports on several televisions all around the space, friendly and competent service, and a wide array of food and cocktail choices. I had the Spartan Grilled Cheese with bacon, avocado, cheddar and provolone cheese on grilled sourdough. Delicious. Emily was my server and bartender and she was great! Thanks!

Yelp
Awesome!!! Food was so good I forgot to take pictures! They were busy with an unexpected large group but that didn't hinder the service. Attentive and friendly servers, food was hot & delicious, nice atmosphere. I recommend the cauliflower bites & my hubby enjoyed the brisket tacos. Highly recommend.

Yelp
drinks are good. food is good. service is nice too! we came on a saturday night when they had two private events and a fun piano comedy event thing going on. people were sat timely, food and drinks came out as expected too. service was nice too, despite them being busyyy.

B W.

Yelp
The food is excellent, especially the fish entree! Atmosphere at times is lacking, with loud crowds. Sometimes its not busy, believe people passing by may not think its open for lunch. I did see recently they had a sign that it was open for lunch. Being on Route 59, its not only locals, you must get those passing by who may not be familiar with the area. This restaurant looks great inside and out and is very inviting. It's worth trying!

Yelp
I was pretty bummed by my experience here! The only redeeming factor was that the food was really good! But the service we received was terrible! I came in as a group of 6 on a Saturday around 1PM. The restaurant was about 20% full at the time. It took about 15 minutes for a waitress to come to our table to ask for drink orders. After we received our drinks, the waitress didn't visit our table again and after 45 mins, we decided to ask the status of our orders. She then brought out half our orders. We waited another 30 mins before the other 3 were delivered. She didn't check in once during any part of our waiting or our meals. We had to seek her out any time we needed refills, a box, and the checks. I would've understood this type of service if it was crowded or if there was only one server, but neither of these were the case. Even just a check in to give an update on where our order was at would've been appreciated. We were legitimately wondering if we had been forgotten. It seriously took everything within me to not cancel my order and leave. It's really a bummer because all our food was really good, but the service we received is not redeemable!

Yelp
Great place for dinner and drinks! A lot of room and TVs, waiters are super nice and food was good and reasonably priced. Definitely coming here more often.

Yelp
First time here, always see the place and always wanna stop and finally did. Everything we had was amazing and we will definitely be back. Got pizza for the kids and they smashed! Then got traditional wings which were prolly some of the best I've had. Along with the French onion soup and Greek chicken skewers! Amazing! We will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is huge! I liked that we chose to sit at the low tables, away from the noise of the bar side. Appetizer was ordered 15 min before entrees. They came out at the same time. Appetizer was alright but cold. See pics. Burger- my son loved it Grilled cheese- I enjoyed it but strong garlic. Never got the beer I ordered. Bummer.

Steph A.

Yelp
Bad service, mediocre food at best and the cheapest of all educator discount/perk schemes I've ever seen! Lots of great neighborhood restaurants are awesome about doing this. Only difference btwn them and Spartan Ale House is that real restaurants offer 20-25% off you your bill (or one 40%) while Spartan Ale House gives 25% off the educators MEAL only. Hysterical. Just don't . It was icing on the cake for our bad experience.

Allen T.

Yelp
St. Patrick's Day 2025. Here for dinner. It's 640 PM St. Patrick's Day. We ordered at 6:25, our waitress just informed us"we ran out of corned beef".Another batch of corned beef was cooking the said it needed 2 hours before they could cut it according to health standards. I pray those seated after us DO NOT GET ANY corned beef. Disregard this place.

Leslie M.

Yelp
Visited Spartan Ale House on Saturday, 3/15/25. Had reservations for 4. They were busy because of St. Patrick's Day but the atmosphere was fun. Our server was attentive sometimes and nonexistent at other times. We ordered nachos and they were good and arrived in a timely manner. After that, we ordered a wrap and the Spartan Sliders. All 4 of us were disappointed. After ordering our entrees, it took forever to get our meals. We were just going to ask if our orders were even put in and then they arrived. The Spartan sliders were horrible- very dry and very small(even for sliders). Charging $20 for 3 tiny dry sliders is outrageous. When we got the bill, we were charged $2.50 to make the wrap from a salad...??? It is listed on the menu as a wrap- then charge more to make a wrap??? We will not be going back here. Wanted to like it but the food & service does not justify the hefty prices. :(

Joanna L.

Yelp
We have been going to Spartan Ale house for a few years now since we moved to the area. We have both dined-in and ordered take-out and we have never been disappointed. If you are in search of a delicious burger or a buffalo chicken sandwich... Spartan is the place to go. We are burger enthusiasts and theirs never disappoints. It's a little sad to see that they aren't always busy so we hope they can stick around for some time! They also have really good prices on their drinks and beer.

Yelp
Arrived 5.40 on Saturday night. Parking is good and accessible. Reception is friendly. We were seated immediately. The place is clean. Washrooms are clean. Lights in the restaurant are so dim you have to use a flashlight to read the menu. The TV's are brighter than the lighting. There is no music on the restaurant side. Only the bar had music. Waitress was attentive and friendly. I ordered fish and chips. Frys didn't have any taste to them. Fish tasted like it came from the frozen food section at Aldi. Not fresh, not beer battered. It was served hot and fairly fast. Free refills on soft drinks. Coke products. Overall not impressed.

Maddie S.

Yelp
Maddie was the best waitress ever! The food was great and I felt bad for our server because she had a party way on the other side of the restaurant but yet didn't neglect us at all. I definitely recommend! Will be back soon!

bethany m.

Yelp
Service was good. Food was amazing. The chicken pita was so delicious. They have some pretty good specials. The atmosphere is welcoming. I definitely recommend this place!

Nick D.

Yelp
Food was great, the place is pretty cool. Its a bar/tavern. The service here today was beyond sub par. It took over two hours for our food. Never recommend coming back. No rib fest goin on, no last fling either. We got there about 12:30 on Saturday afternoon. No big sports on today either. Plenty of other great options in the area with better service.

Dennis S.

Yelp
The last two times I was there, I was dissapointed. It's been months so I thought we'd give it one more try. I ordered the fish and chips, thinking that should be a no brainer. How can you possibly screw that up, right? Even the VFW does that well. My dinner was really a plate of French fries with slivers of fish hiding underneath. The breading outweighed the fish and even the pleasant young server could not make up for the mediocre at best, food. Sorry, three strikes and your out!
google avatar

David K.

Yelp
Service was very good. The Spartan Nachos best in the area. Spartan sliders were very good. The garlic mashed potatoes, Wow! We went at 630pm on a Saturday night and it was some what crowded but not noisy. By the time we finished not to many left and could hear the bar music. Definitely will come back.

David B.

Yelp
Saturday night, but not real busy (that should tell you something...). Service sloooow and not really interested; bar service slooooow; food quality on the loooow side. $20 shrimp rice and ginger entree was a literally tasteless mass of sticky overcooked rice. Beef au jus was dry, tasteless and terrible. Fish and chips were unremarkable. Greek bread appetizer was the best item we ate. Ambiance = large bar with tables surrounding on 2 sides; industrial black interior. It's fallen quite a way down from the last time we were here. Too bad. We won't be back.

McKenna H.

Yelp
Came to Spartans for a bears game and it was the best experience. Service was great, Katie was our server and she was so attentive!
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Easter brunch was not very good. Poor quality food. Selection wasn't great. Restaurant wasn't very clean. Barely any service of any kind. I wouldn't eat here again.

Henry H.

Yelp
Don't know why more people don't opt for this place as their go to sports bar. The daily specials are excellent, have tried 3 so far. $10 for a quality double cheeseburger and fries on Thursday, BOGO wings (which are huge and super good as well) on Saturdays and $7 cheese pizzas (was honestly pretty mediocre but its a 14" pizza for only $7, hard to complain) on Sundays. $4 pint of the months everyday are great as well and they have additional drink deals for their daily specials. TV setup at the bar is excellent for watching multiple games at once and they're pretty big/quality compared to other sports bars in the area. My only gripe with this place is that the food can be slow coming out. While the food can be slow, servers were excellent with getting additional drinks when low/out. A certain sports bar on 59/North Aurora was my previous go to spot for a long time, but this place is my new gameday go to. Besides the pizza, Spartan's food is way better than my old spot. One suggestion: adding onion rings to the menu would be a good addition to the side/apps options.

Yelp
Good food, nice place! We loved the Mac and cheese. The space is pretty big so lots of seating, the pick up service could be a bit better.

Erika F.

Yelp
Madeline was great! Food was awesome and beer selection was vast. Trivia night was a blast. Would go back.

Emily W.

Yelp
Came for lunch on Friday. Literally one guy was seating people, talking orders, and making drinks. ONE! We sat there for an hour before we got our food. Are you bad at scheduling or just not pay enough to keep people on your payroll?

Jeni R.

Yelp
I don't know how this place is still in business. We've tried it several times and really wanted a good experience because it's so close. We went in for a football game on Saturday night. They had the main dining room closed off because there wasn't enough staff. We waited 45 minutes for wings. Cancel the rest of our order and left. Very disappointing because we really want them to succeed. Something needs to change.

Lori M.

Yelp
Delicious food, sports bar atmosphere, nice location. My daughter & her fiance dine here or get carry-out often.

Carter C.

Yelp
Do NOT come here! Beginning my review I've been here twice and waited over an hour both times for my food which had little to no seasoning... my entree was very small considering it was supposedly one of the bigger items and when it got to my table it looked like cheap meat along with a bed of under seasoned fast cook rice. My father had the mahi sliders which he described as being overcooked and not worth what he paid or what he waited. The atmosphere was what you'd expect from an ale house a little loud chatter in the background of your conversation. Other than the beer I wouldn't come back here.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Spartan Alehouse for lunch. It was recommended by someone in my neighborhood, so I suggested it to her. When we got there, it wasn't busy. It was about 1pm on a Saturday and there were only 3 other parties in the restaurant. We were not promptly greeted, but perhaps the hostess took advantage of the slowness to get other things done. I suspect the bartender went to let her know someone was waiting to be seated, so it is nice to see the employees working together. The inside is pretty basic. The furnishing wasn't quite as up to date as you would expect of a newer restaurant. Some of the booths already looked a little worn, but it felt clean. Our waiter was very nice. He greeted us with a smile and served us promptly. We ordered the nachos for an appetizer, and they were actually really good. The meat was flavorful and there were enough toppings to coat every chip. For my entree, I ordered the hamburger, which was also good. It may not have been the best burger I have ever had, but the meat had a ton of flavor, and it was very juicy without being underdone. The fries were good as well. They were super crispy and yummy. It is hard to go wrong with fries though. My friend got a wrap. You are able to make any salad they offer into a wrap which is always a great feature. I didn't try it, but she said the wrap was good and the ingredients looked pretty fresh. I didn't get any cocktails as I was pregnant at the time, but my friend ordered something. She was describing what she liked, and the waiter gave some suggestions. She ended up getting the old fashioned, but I loved the way some of their fall drinks sounded (pumpkin white Russian.. yum!). She liked the drink, but thought it was a little heavy on the bitters. Overall, it was very good, and I wouldn't mind going there again!

Yelp
Reservations: they can be made on their website We went: Friday at 615pm Place: big building. Plenty of seating. The place used to be home to an Irish restaurant. The bar is situated in the entrance area in the middle of the two standard restaurant seating areas The greeting: greeted quickly and warmly at the check in desk. The server: was friendly and came soon after we sat to get our drink orders. She checked in on us fairly frequently to see if anything was needed and how things tasted. They were out of metal monkey beer we chose and it still appeared on the final bill but she credited it back once we pointed it out. The sangria order was for the holiday sangria but the white sangria drink was brought out. The drinks: Decent beer list with a focus on local breweries. Nicely done. Choices for mixed drinks and wines were solid. Something for all. The food: they keep true to the Spartan name and have Greek choices nicely peppered in to the pub food menu. The apps and entree choices were many of the pub favorites you see. We had the shrimp tacos, shaved prime rib sliders, the quinoa bowl and another shrimp bowl as our four entrees. 3 were reported as very good, decently portioned and tasty. My prime rib sliders were over cooked and dry. Two of the three had a significant amount of fat on them that had to be trimmed off. The sides are good choices from fries, Mac and cheese, garlic mash and others most at no upcharge. The four of us ate for $118 before tip. No apps, 3 tall beers and 1 sangria and 4 entrees. The prices: slightly high on the entrees and tall beer. The overall take: The interior seems disjointed and dimly lighted in many areas. No lights above the tables in the middle of the area we sat but lights above the booths on the perimeter of that same dining area. The high ceilings. I think a lot of the previous restaurant's icons and decor is still here which makes it feel outdated. There are tvs everywhere, even in the dining areas. Although clean for sure, it seems like a more modern makeover could help this place figure out its identity; is it striving to be a nice casual sit down restaurant or a sports bar? The staff works hard and helps each other. The food was above average and has some unique tasty dishes offered. But people are visual and want to feel like it has an inviting quality that will bring them back: both related to food and ambiance. I'll give this place another go soon and you should give it's menu a first try too! Tip your staff well and support local businesses. They work and try hard. Feedback is always welcome by places that want to continually get better!

Yelp
I tried the Spartan Ale House for lunch. I had the rib sliders and french onion soup lunch special. Both were excellent! My business friend was impressed with his food and drink. Bartender was great. I will be back.

C E.

Yelp
The restaurant and bar area are very nice. Unfortunately it took an hour for our food. Simple wraps. Nothing fancy. And they sucked. No taste. Very bland. The waitress was 5 stars. Super nice. I might go back for drinks, but never for food. They seriously need a cook upgrade.
google avatar

Harry G.

Yelp
Is the place a restaurant or a bar? Or both? Like why haven't I gotten helped at my table. Why can't I order a drink? Do I have to go to the bar to order a drink? Food sucks. Hate my burger. Never eat here, I find myself asking too many questions. I shouldn't be asking this many questions, why am I so confused? I'm trying to have a good time at dinner with my friends and I'm confused. Not good. Well, I'm never eating here again and you shouldn't either. PLACE SUCKS.

Yelp

Yelp
Great service I love the cheese bricks, the burgers, service is excellent, I'm treated like a big celebrity well known person when I'm there. I love the big chocolate chip cookie sundae dessert. The employees are awesome It's my favorite sports bar and I can't wait to go back Tony Taylor

Chris G.

Yelp
A pleasant choice I made stopping in here on a SCREAMING hot day in Naperville. Very good air conditioning, clean table tops and high top chairs. Nice service with Cubs on the tv, along with golf and little league. Steak Sandwich was excellent. Cole slaw even better. And Cookie with ice cream was extra great! $20 + 5 tip. Wish I could have had a brewski, many good options. I will be back!

Yelp
Great restaurant with awesome food. Great environment. Ashely the waitress did a great job!

Yelp
Our family is deeply grateful for the way we were treated during our entire experience. Emilio was exceptional and went above and beyond in assisting us with our reservation, even going out of his way to accommodate our early arrival. Rhoda, our waitress, was a true gem - friendly, patient, and compassionate. She made us all feel right at home. The gesture of receiving flowers from Jason and Emillio at the end of our event was so heartfelt, and words cannot express how much it meant to us. Ron was also incredibly kind and understanding when my sister returned the following day to pick up the receipt. We truly appreciate everyone's empathetic and thoughtful actions. We will forever be loyal customers. A final plus was the food from our buffet was outstanding and tasted great!

Aisling C.

Yelp
Best cheese bricks ever!!!! Some menu items are over-priced, but we come for the appetizer's & atmosphere. Love the skeleton that comes back every Halloween.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
We dined at the restaurant last summer and had a wonderful experience. Last week was completely different. Service was slow, took 20 minutes to get bar drinks. Appetizers were the best part- they were delicious. The dinner was awful. My cousin had the spartan salad and it was drenched in unbelievably hot sauce. Lettuce was soggy from it. It was not edible and her lips were burning from it. I ended up sharing my wrap with her because the server did not come back for over 20 minutes and nobody was around. The wrap was basically lettuce, tomato and cucumbers, hardly any chicken. Mac and cheese was dry. Garlic parm fries were like mashed potatoes they were so mushy you couldn't pick one up. The server removed the salad and fries from the bill. With the cost of going out today, this was a huge disappointment. Not to mention our food took 45 minutes to come out and we only had 6 people. I did email the restaurant directly but with no response. We were sat in the bar area with two kids and it was ladies night. They had a DJ and we could not even hear each other talk once that started. I would not recommend.

Yelp
Great place with a wide menu for everyone. Service was great led by Sam. Food was wonderful from appetizers to desserts. Try the breaded cheese logs. And the appetizer nachos were yummy. The lollipop lamb chops were cooked just right and so was the lamb burger. Everyone gives it 5 stars. One suggestion for those who like a little more peace during dinner would be to remove the TV screens from the dining room only.

Yelp
When this place first opened we tried it out a couple times and it was really good. But the past few times we've been here it's been pretty bad. We just had the St Paddy's Day Corned Beef and Cabbage and it was awful. This place is awesome looking inside and real close to our house so I wish they would turn things around in the kitchen and start putting out some decent food.
