Yikes, this place may have made the 2nd worst drink i have ever had in my life. I actually felt sick from it later but more of a stomach ache, not nausea. The place is disorganized into 3 separate rooms and 1 of which has pool tables but the walls are too close to play a proper game. This place used to be awesome but its pretty much a bad dive bar now. Won't be going back. Sad though what happened to this place.

Excellent bar with knowledgeable bartenders for cocktails and a diverse set of beers. Chill atmosphere and happy hour prices till 6pm every day. Didn't get to try their food, will stop by next time.

DJ GURU G and Orlando provide the best in R&B, Rap, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Soul and Disco. Do yourself a favor & check out Spats.

Thanks, Ms. B, for the hospitality! The drinks and service were excellent. My partner and I dropped in after a trip from Calistoga; we were bar hopping and stopped in Napa and had one of the worst experiences at some local bar. After that, we decided to head back to the East Bay, closer to home, and stopped in Berkeley for a night cap. After what we'd been through, some weird hater shit, it was refreshing to be so close to home and have a great vibe and atmosphere. No nonsense! Appreciate you, Ms. B! Thank you!

A fun place to hang out. The service is excellent and the food is good. My review needs at least 85 characters and therefore I'm adding 85 characters and telling Yelp to go f*** itself.

My favorite dive bar when I was in seminary. If you have never been to seminary, I recommend it as a life-changing experience. But it's awfully hard and after a long day of being on your best behavior, you really need somewhere to unwind. The food was good dive bar food.

A good spacious kind of dive bar with televisions to watch sports. The back of the bar has classic pinball machines. The bar has lots of drinks available. This is a good place to stop and meet up for a drink.

3 stars for the beer. 4 stars for the divey bar (I have a soft spot for dive bars). 5 stars for friendliness. Smells like a dive bar which is a plus. Large space. I wouldn't mind stopping back in for a few drinks if I'm in the neighborhood. I had the wings and they tasted as they should.

Haha this place is hilarious!! I had a bug in my drink and this guy filters it out instead of giving me a new drink. Literally scooped it out and handed it back to me. I kindly asked for a new drink and he said that the alcohol content will kill anything bad in the drink. Horrible customer service. In the future they should just give someone a new drink if there is a bug. It's simple.

Epic Berkeley spot. Pinball, pool, Mrs Pac-Man, full on dance floor, lit music, tons of space and fresh air. Always a nice time to be had at Spats.

Amazing service. Brisket and ribs were tender and amazing Mac n cheese. Service was great and our door dining with a DJ was good. I love bbq and this is my basis for other bbq. Had bbq via door dash and just didn't compare. If you can door door dash or Grub hub a lot of us wound love to Give you the business. Quality is amazing. Chef takes pride!!!!!!

Spats used to be the jump, but now it just isn't the same anymore. Sloppy drunks, uninterested bartenders, and slow ass service have all prevailed over this bar. I remember spending HOURS in that bar, chopping it up with friends and having a wonderful time. But now, it's like you can't even get anyone to help you. Yeah, I know it's a college bar but daaaaamn. How many effing drunkards are you gonna let roam the place? It's just sloppy... not even funny, but really ridiculous. When I found out that they got rid of the taco Tuesdays and Wing Wednesdays, my heart sunk. They weren't the best tacos and wings in the world, but they we're .25 cents each which was all the more reason to love them. They now have vendors who come in to partner with them for a certain time and sell food. The last time I was there, they were partnering with a burger place. What sucks is that I used to be able to order everything including food at the bar. Now, I have to go wait in line and order in the next room. The poor lady was extremely overwhelmed and my food took 45 minutes to come out. And if you wanna use one card to pay for everything, you'll have to close out at the bar, pay for your food, and then come back to open up another tab. The dumbest ish ever. They still have some of the cheapest drink specials in town during happy hour here, and that's why people will keep going regardless. There's been so many staff changes, and some of the bartenders seem like they really don't wanna be there. The drinks are okay. Nothing fancy, but it'll do the job. They have games in the back and trivia days in the middle room, but good luck trying to find a place to sit on those days. I don't know... I wanna give them another chance because I used to love this place. Maybe I'll go check it out again soon and see if anything changes.

Went there last night for a party , the security named Tina was so nice and helpful and funny. She made our night and helped us with any of our queries. This woman needs a pay rise !!!! She is an asset to your business not a liability like us last night lol

Don't let the size of the entrance fool you, this place has 2 bars, a game room and a back room for private events. Drinks are very affordable and they have food!!! Did I mention that drinks are cheap! Try to come on a night when it's 2 for $10 or 2 for $12. In the heart of Berkeley's college town but the crowd varies so don't be discouraged if you're not in the mood for talks of finals, projects, etc. They have a Dj that spins and/or music playing. TV's too but you won't spend much time watching. It's more fun drinking and mingling. Street parking only.

Spats is the fucking bomb of Berkeley California. Berkeley was founded because spats was built in the town. I wish more people appreciate how beautiful and calming soars is.... They have a ROULETTE!!!! I WISH THEY STEPPED IP THEIR GAME BC THEY GOT SUCH A NICE BIG PLACE I LOVE SPATS!!

ive been standIng here for 15 min for an order that was supposed to be ready 20 min ago. Even worse, they advertise curb side pick up , yet they don't even answer the phone (as instructed) . So, I had to leave my kid illegally parked so I could run in , yet I am still standing here 20 min later. I don't care how good the food is, if I did already pay , id so not be standing here. they should have offered a discount, bc that was so not cool. be prepared to wait a long time.

From the outside it looks like a small dive bar...which it is....except it is actually a lot bigger than it appears. This is the type of place that is definitely a dive bar, but is good if you want to just get a drink and meet new people, catch up with a friend, or come in a group. The drinks were affordable and were not weak, which is such a big plus. Beyond not being too expensive, it is located right in the heart of downtown on Shattuck so it is super convenient. Not to mention, they also have a wheel that you can spin. Although fun, it just didn't feel like it was for me. Although maybe it was not for me, I will continue to come for the drinks and to continuously mix up my drink locations.

November 4, 2018 "Spats" when most people think of them, they think of those white coverings that ole school gangsters or marching bands wore over their dress shoes. When I think about "Spats" I think about a bar with pretty good drink specials in the midst of a college town. What a great find this place was, thanks to them following me on social media, I knew I had to look them up the next time I decided to visit Berkeley. I credit "Yelp" and their events for me wanting to be adventurous and explore post "YEE" because I found "Spats" and here is what I thought about my visit.. Spats Berkeley: This establishment also serves food, but my review is solely on the bar/nightlife aspect. "Spats" is a bar that's been around for a while upon speaking with regulars. It's had it's share of up's and down's but it's still here. Now "Spats" is ran by the same group of people that run the very popular bars "Butter","Bullitt", and the now defunt "Tonic" in San Francisco. If you've been to those bars, "Spats" carries over the same unique vibe and energy those establishments have. Sitting on "Shattuck" among everything that's popular in Berkeley. This place fully embodies what I feel a good bar should be. "Spats" is a place that the locals go to, and My personal motto for visiting new places is to "Go where the locals go" from the drink specials and the overall vibe, this joint is definitely all that and a bag of chips. The happy hour here is everyday till six o'clock, so basically open till the cut off time. They have a great selection of spirits and brews here and pretty unique happy hour and "Spin the Drink Wheel" options here. What I had on my visit was a basic well Gin and Juice (OJ) $4.00 and a few (Actually more than..) Miller High Life and a Shot $5. I'm a "Fernet" guy, so I got that as my shot choices, they gave you a 4oz glass of the beer to go with the shots. They also have a jukebox here if you want to play your own tunes and a okay amount of seating, which I could see being an issue on busier days. Overall: I think "Spats" is a great hometown bar, they have everything going on for them that a good dive should have. This bar is perfect for the locals but friendly enough for non residents to stop by and partake in shenanigans. Being that this establishment is in downtown Berkeley, the prices and vibe is just right for the nearby college students that make up a good part of the scene. I would totally come back to "Spats" although this was my first time, the overall vibe was a great and familiar one. Just a hop, skip, and a jump (Not literally) away from Downtown Berkeley BART, there is no reason not to see what this place is about.

wanted to like this place. was ignored and treated with blatant disrespect. Maybe thats what the bartender intended, it really seemed so. So many places these days are full of people too cool to be of service to folks. Whoever owns this place should look into how unbelievable rude the staff can be. You and your regulars are mean girls, men included

Came here for brunch with my guy, we had a Groupon for two brunch entrees, two bottomless mimosas and two shots. Yes, we took an uber here! We sat at the bar and placed our order. We received these huge big belly glasses of mimosas, no skimping here. I ordered the Breakfast Totchos, which were tater tots topped with a fried egg, cheese sauce, chili, pico de gallo, jalapeños, sour cream & guacamole. My guy ordered the Spats Omelette which was spinach, tomato and cheddar. Our meals were very good. This is a fun brunch place, it's not stuffy or expensive. Great place to get over that hangover or work on your next one. Just saying!

If you're a sports fan and in Berkeley this is the place to go. My first time, greeted by an awesome bartender Jake. I was really early and he let me in early after getting everything setup. Great people, drinks and most importantly Bay Area sports! Don't sleep on this place! It's huge!

Dudeeee, all you need to know is that happy hour is every day until 6 and it's worth it. Currently, A pint of Highlite and a shot for 5$ 2 for 10$ Titos Mule and they Pickle juice for a Pickle back is awesome. let's just say I didn't make it for food, but I've heard great things about it. I will be back!

I rolled to Spats the other day . To Pick Up my Yelp Game Day tickets. Spats looked like an interesting place . So I decided to stay and have a drink or 2 . I grabbed a table and took a load off . Spats has a cool Yelp Check in Offer . An Order of Free Tater Tots with a drink order .. Since it was a Cal Bears Home Game ,Spats was extremely busy and they appeared a little understaffed . So it took a while for a Server to appear . Once a Server came by ,She was nice and took my Drink Order and Marked my Check In Offer as used . 20 minutes later I had my Mint Julep the Official Drink of Yelp Elites and a nice order of Tater Tots . The Mint Julep was delish and served in a Pint Glass . The Tater Tots were nice and Crispy like I like them . I liked the Mint Julep so much I ordered a second one. Very refreshing . I liked Spats it had a nice Festive atmosphere . It was almost game time and my Ankle Bracelet alerted so I rolled out lol.

Pre-gaming before Yelp's Game Day + Swag + Drinks + Tots = TOUCHDOWN!!! Love the ambiance of this place, and it's kid-friendly. Ample seating for groups and families to watch the games without having to be at the bar with rowdy peeps. I like how they separate the two. Real cozy lounge area and clean restrooms. Our waitress ITAK (unique name) was friendly and despite the madness Saturday evening, she managed to advise when our drinks and food were coming. She didn't abandon us, as she was juggling the entire dining area almost by herself. The tater tots were hot and scrumptious. The drinks were strong. I will definitely come back when in the area, it's Berzerkeley! Cheers =)

Great place to hang out. They've got a nice lounge area with couches and a few tables for people to sit at. If you're looking for a spot to sit and eat they have a dining area but if you're just there for the brews, there's also a bar. The whole vibe to this place is vintage. I can dig that... they've got this big ass spinning wheel in the bar to help you choose what you're looking for (pretty neat). But their tots were pretty good (check in for free tots).

I used to stop by Spats before it closed its doors and went dark for a while; Back then it was a funky college hangout. Now it's a little funky but grown up. TVs so you can still catch the game. Pool table in the far room. Budget mindful and chill vibe in the bar. Jake treated me and my friends like we were regulars. Drink specials and even a spin the wheel game (the cement mixer is NOT a good idea...ever). The folks from Smoke Berkeley are running the kitchen with yummy BBQ meals and sandwiches. The new menu even sports a vegetarian option of smoked tofu. Leave room for pie. You can even get take out. Otherwise, get a sandwich and beer with a shot and enjoy a fun, local college.

Spats has a pretty fun trivia night, but that's really the only thing I enjoyed about it. It has mediocre beer. The vibe is kind of blah. They have various bar food items but the service is pretty slow. Basically, it's just like any other boring bar in the area.

Spats is celebrating it's 40th anniversivery today by holding HH for 3 more hours. opening was at 12 rather than the usual five. specials: $1 off drafts, $10 miller pitchers. 2 moscow mules for one, miller & shot for 5, etc. drinks: laughing monk pale ale, fort point real (5) -drinks hoppy, distinct taste, not my fav -cocktails definitely the way to go if u find right one. on drafts: -unsure how it's 40 years since Spats reopened around oct, 2015, and they closed either in 2009 or 2011. -not sure why washington supporters would be kicking my leg or bumping me when they ordered drinks looked a few things. got blank stare from persons on left. -not my kind of bar. 4 stars if u like random bumps/kicks in the dark from strangers....was if being profiled? iffy, they probably wanted to get closer to the barrista. -4 stars for cheapness -3 stars of having situations that could get out of hand.

Great place for pool, pinball, dancing, and drinks! Cam made us a great old-fashioned and cosmopolitan, and was lively for conversation!

Kind of disappointed with this place. My friends and I came on a Thursday and the service was on point. We had a friendly and knowledgeable waiter who was really nice. However, while this was a bar-ish place, the food was subpar. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and my friends had a burger and a chicken sandwich. They thought the food was okay. We all enjoyed the tots or fries, but that doesn't make a meal. For me, the pulled pork sandwich became soggy fast and it's sweet seasoning was a turn off. I don't mind slightly sweet barbecue sauce, but this sauce tasted like someone poured a pit of sugar in. I had to cover it up using Tabasco or else it would have been inedible. While we didn't drink any cocktails, they sound good. If you do go here, just get snack food and drinks rather than a meal.

Spats on Shattuck.... Met up with the other co-worker and we were going to do the Wings Wednesday and have some beers. So my one co-worker said Spats featured a Wings Wednesday where the wings were dirt cheap, he graduated from UC Berkeley and lived in Berkeley so he should know. I was surprised. I guess the wings are a thing of the past and we had to settle for some chicken sandwiches, sliders and fish tacos. The fish tacos were tilapia and I'm a fish taco snob who wants either snapper, mahi mahi or cod. Picky, hence I'm an Elite. I liked my chicken sandwich, the taste reminded me of a Bakesale Betty chicken sandwich. The place was lively and nice choices on tap, I settled on Trummer Pilsner since it was the local stuff. I didn't have the chance to spin the wheel of fortune where there are opportunity to win some booze/beer specials but next time. Cheers!

I love Spats there BBQ and Drinks are really good. I been there just to have drinks and also to eat I love that it's family oriented and that they have old school pin ball machines. I love the drinks good and strong for a good price. The staff in the restaurant is so nice and sweet. I love they have live music there and that it's local for me to get to.

Love this place! Came here for the cal game for the Yelp event and they play reggae music! Huge plus and they have free tots upon a check in as long as you order a drink! Great atmosphere and customer service :) The bar tender was super friendly and helped recommend drinks to me .. I ended up choosing the chi chi punch which tasted amazing :) Come and enjoy!

Spats is a great place to hang out and grab drinks. I came here for a friend's birthday celebration. For $11, you can spin a wheel (like on Wheel of Fortune) that has a different types of drinks on there. Unless you land on the tall can of PBR, the spin is totally worth it. Examples of what you can get: 4 shots of a liquor of your choice, a bottle of champagne, beer-garita, Fireball and a free spin. There's both Old Rasputin Stout and Barrel Aged here. I've heard so much about Old Rasputin that I was so happy that I got to try it on tap. Highly recommend!

Normally, I would give 5 stars because the bartenders are amazing and very chill, the food provided by their in house kitchen, "Crack," is top notch and has some of the best tater tots in the Bay Area, and the bar is quite spacious with many interesting evening events. Unfortunately, I am giving this bar one star because one of the co-owners is absolutely delusional and a bit scary. If you want your customers to treat your bar like a fine dining establishment, it would have been a better idea to open up a hotel or a high end restaurant. Also, your staff is terrified of you and that's never good for business.

I would post 5 stars for the food and drinks, but getting sexually harassed by the older gentleman working the door on 10/27 (Saturday before Halloween) bumps this review down a few stars. Having never met this man in my life, he checks my ID as I'm coming in, and then says, "I don't know you personally, but I sure like you sexually" Who says that?! Like wow, thanks for making the first impression of this establishment a rape-y one. Probably not the first thing a woman wants to hear when entering a bar with the intention of having a few drinks with friends. I will say that I had the best mojito of my life shortly there after but I'm not sure I would ever want to pay the price of getting creeped on by someone who works there just to get another one.

It's time to update my review! Walked in yesterday night (Taco Tuesday) and I expected to see my favorite bartender (Randy). Rumor has it that Randy found a better opportunity but I don't know if that's true. What I do know though is that Randy was the BEST bartender in that joint and I want him to come back. * looks around* Randy! Please come back. I sat at the bar for about 5 minutes and remembered Randy telling me that if he was never around then I had a backup to depend on which was a beautiful young lady named Melissa. I seen she was there and I felt better when I seen her so I waited till she was done serving the bar (Shorty was super busy, that must mean something, right). She's the Bomb! She totally remembered me from sitting at the bar and Randy would serve me. I bought the 2-for 1 Margarita and I must admit she can make a delicious damn drink! If you're a drinker, you know how hard it is to find a damn good bartender that's going to know exactly how you like it, right!? Melissa hooked it up the whole night. I stayed about 2 hours and she was amazing at coming to check in with me. She seems really popular at the bar because everyone was coming up and checking and let her know that they were leaving and thanking her for a good drink. (That was nice). I still recommend this place for a good drink but ,it's only because of Randy and Melissa being amazing bartenders! Come here and ask for them and you will not be disappointed! (Thank me later) *Smiles*

I've only been here on Wing Wednesdays so I can't comment for the place on other days. It's a huge place with tons of seating - well aside from game days - so finding a spot isn't too bad. I enjoy that they have a huge wheel near the bar and i've definitely bought a few people a couple spins. It adds to the vibe of the place and does have some great steals on it for $11, but also some bad ones like PBR. haha Each time i've been here the servers have been great. Always attentive to take my drink/food orders, clean the table, and ask if I want a refill. I've tried all the wing flavors but my favorite one hands down is the Thai. They recently added a super hot flavor called Spirit and it I can't take it. I've had mixed reviews among friends about it being too spicy but also nothing out of the ordinary. You should come try it for yourself!

Good drinks, bar feel and big TVs.. this place is great for game days .. The place is divided in section.. Bar, middle room for family dining and a room for groups.

Spats is back, and so is the Borneo Fogcutter!! We had a performance to attend at the UC Theatre when we got here, so will have to go back for the Fogcutter next time. Lots of large TV screens to watch sporting events, but the old kitschy decor is mostly still there.

Definitely should go here if you have a coupon or something for more food cause they give you a good amount of free food! I went for a taco happy hour and also got free tater tots through yelp and it was all really good! I also came back a different day for just a beer and it didn't take too long to track down a bartender and get an order through. Definitely a very busy place, especially with UC Berkeley people. Expect the bar to be filled if you go at night but luckily they have a lot of room to sit in the restaurant! Bring all your friends and get some beer and tacos here :)

Spats is THE place to be for good people and a great time!! Craig, the bar manager, is always friendly and trying to make sure everyone is having a good time! Jake, a bartender, serves up some stiff drinks and is a crack up! Love them both! They were the best part of Super Bowl Sunday! Highly recommend if you're in the neighborhood and want to have a good time!!

College bar! :: I'm not in college :: If this place was smaller, it'd be your typical homey, yet trendy dive bar (it's a thing). However, it's actually quite large making it a perfect place for the following: groups, events - I imagine a perfect venue for a birthday party, and game day pre-gaming festivities. All three factors were part of my visit to Spat's. I mostly stayed in the lounge area. I loved the vintagey vibe it's got going on (think a ton of old wood tables and chairs, antiquey couch) yet you can still catch your sporting games and they even have an old school Nintendo system for some Super Mario 3 action. The middle section is more for dining (and more tv's), and then there's the bar for straight up dranking! Drinks are not college prices, no doubt about that. You're looking at $10 for a cocktail, but they are large, they are strong and tasty, and yes, it's Berkeley. Still, tho. Food: They offer up a wide array of bar food: think burgers, sandwiches, tacos, fries, salads. I ordered up the vegan dip (yay for vegans) and the chicken sandwich topped with cheese, bacon, L, T and avo (yay for bacon)! All was better than anticipated. The chicken sandwich was super tasty and quite large for the price and came with those beloved tots. A menu highlight that I spied, but didn't taste: totcho's! YEP! Question: Would I go out of my way to eat here? Not quite. But again, if you happen to be here, you can definitely eat and be totally happy and satisfied with your purchasing decision. Or just drinks and tots all day, everyday. A ton of seating, a nice long bar and the employee's are all so nice. Smiles all around and a lot of good will. Not to mention, the music was on point!

I'm a fan. Ok they don't have a happy hour but what the do have makes up for it. Random antique couches, NES (super mario world), enough TVs, TATER TOTS, waitresses are really nice, PITCHERS of cocktails (southern bell for the whiskey drinkers) maybe I'm a little different but I like to add a shot to the pitcher. It's also really large so good for groups and the bathrooms are clean (an obvious plus for any bar). They also have a wheel that you pay to spin: I have won 2 shots of Jameson and a friend won a bottle of champagne.

Maybe it was a bad idea to come here for Valentine's brunch. Very long wait for the food, although they did a good job filling us up on bottomless mimosas. Got the groupon which gave us any entree, bottomless mimosas, and a free shot for $15 (worth it!). The famous totchoes are definitely very filling and should be shared. It's smothered in guac, sour cream, cheese, chili, pico de gallo and is not meant for the faint of the heart. I ordered a burger and it was decent, although I wish it was bigger. I love that your side orders can come with either fries or tater tots (of course..tots!). My friend ordered the eggs benedict, although the egg was overcooked. Probably won't be my first choice of brunch places to go to.

TATER TOTS FOR DAYS. Spats is a great place for groups enjoying a birthday party or watching a sports game. Very chill atmosphere. The waiters are nice, and ours kept trying to join in on our fun, which was hilarious! The majority of people at our table ordered tater tots, including those that checked-in on Yelp for a free set of them. I ordered the Spats Burger, which was alright. Nothing special for a burger. My favorite part was the tater tots. Their beer selection seemed decent, though I always opt for an IPA anyways, so I don't really pay attention to the numerous other ones they have on tap. The birthday boy in our party got to spin the wheel they have at the bar for a drink, and he also tried their Cement Mixer drink, which was apparently interesting. Overall this feels like your average American sports bar, relatively close to the BART station and the UC Berkeley campus. I would come here again to hang out with friends and enjoy a nice beer or two... with tater tots, of course.

Really enjoy Spats the atmosphere is very welcoming and Jake the bartender was super friendly and guided my friends and I to the right drinks. Definitely will be coming back!

Security, not the bartender, said I disrespected him! I never talked to him! Bartender was super cool, I had two wines! Then .. At closing this dude, after last call...opens a non working door and tries to give me a problem! I'm 5' 5"! I tell him, I already wrapped up. .....still bartender has no problem. He's actually working! But this older dude, who hasn't served anyone, harassing me! (I think he showed me the correct door to enter from...initially... now that I have a chance to think... I guess I didn't give him a knee!) It's not okay!!!! He had the wrong person. If a person, at all.

Some of the worst BBQ I've ever had -- dry, bland brisket, served not even warm, little to no char nor flavor; the BBQ sauce was literally cold, as in straight from the refrigerator -- not even room temperature. The cornbread was dry and tasteless, served room temperature, without butter -- neither in, nor on, nor accompanying. Good collard greens, I'll give them that. Never again.

Some of the drinks are a bit on the pricy side, but I've won two bottles of champagne (i'm 2/2) spinning the wheel so I feel pretty good about it. This is a really solid college bar which has the most space next to Pappy's, but the food is better. I really hope spats makes it, I've been a few times in the last month and Berkeley needs it. The tots and wings are particularly good.
