I can understand the five day cancellation policy but they took things too far. I had to cancel our anniversary trip 3 days before check in do to my wife’s mother developing congestive heart failure. Of course we are going to be by her side. I contacted Spearfish Canyon Lodge to at least try. The front desk was not helpful. Later in an email I was told that nothing could be done since we had actually stayed there. That was pretty low since it came on the day of check in while we were still 8 hours away sitting bedside at a hospital. I was willing to just accept the situation up to that point. They certainly are not a true representation of the South Dakota charm that we have grown fond of from many previous trips😕 In response to your response on 2-18-25; What you don’t realize is that I was also on the phone when Expedia spoke to your front desk. Expedia was willing to work with us but your front desk was not and proceeded to speak two different stories depending on who they were talking to. Getting the whole story is pretty important before dismissing a customer on false claims. As we now make funeral arrangements I find your response quite heartless but about what I expected.

Usually I’ll stay somewhere more medium priced, but my family convinced me to upgrade because they always believe it’s worth it. Understatement of the year. One of the staff members, Bernie/Bernadette, went above and beyond and her customer service deserves 5 stars alone. I just stayed one night, but it was the coziest I’ve been in a hotel/lodge and I’m staying all the way through to check out.

We loved our stay and will be returning in the future. We stayed in the Custer Suite. We loved the gas fireplace in the room. The room was cozy and clean. The staff was very friendly. We had a great time at the bar downstairs. The views of the canyon are stunning.

Google
Amazing people... BEAUTIFUL PLACE! I was actually going to an event at a completely different place, but my map gave me directions here. The ladies at the front desk were so helpful. They actually printed a page with the address and information of the place I was looking for. HOW AWESOME IS THAT! My wrong turn took me to the right people! We will definitely stay here when we visit the Black Hills this summer.

Google
The most helpful people ever!! Great place and such good service. We almost ran out of gas in snowmobiles. It was 2 hours after they closed the gas service. The manager got ahold of staff and had them come open for us.Absolutely awesome place!!!

Google
Great fun experience, attentive staff, safety first! Beautiful landscape. Must see Cement Ridge. We were a large group of 18 and the staff was very accommodating. We rode a 4-seater & took turns driving. Bring face covering for under your helmet and a change of clothes for after the ride, dust is mighty! The premises and the lodge is beautiful. Highly recommend.

We loved spearfish canyon! Amazing drinks and a beautiful place to relax on our snow mobiling trip. Rachel the bar tender was the best! Thank you!

Google
The Lodge Lobby is beautiful and in a wonderful location to Roughlock Falls and Spearfish Falls. The rooms are a bit shabby and worn. The linens are acceptable, but our bedspread was dusty and could use being replaced. The towels were great!||We ate dinner at their restaurant The Latchstring, on the premises, which was very good. Their breakfast was nothing memorable.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite destinations, and I'll leave pictures to show you the ambiance. How can you not love viewing a clear sky from the hot tub? The amenities are plentiful. Accessibility is an option. It's going to be hard to meet people any nicer than the workers at this lodge!

Yelp
The area is wonderful, not so much the hotel especially for the money. Rooms and hotel in general need TLC. Dingy rooms with a slight smell. Staff... some present and helpful... some not. Latchstring food, excellent and fair pricing. Staff mostly great. But like the hotel, the furnishings and environment, more like a dinner trying to be more. Surprising. I would not go back.

Yelp
Love the place. Good people, nice rooms and great service! The Canyon is spectacular, and the Lodge is well positioned to show it!

Yelp
I'm conflicted about this review. Absolutely stay here for the location. It felt like the lodge was a little tired for the price charged, and was trying hard to be fancier than it is. Staff was nice, room was clean. But the wear on the structure is starting to show. Sink faucet was broken, shower didn't drain well, carpet on stairs is worn, marks on hallways and doors, electronic locks on exterior doors were difficult to operate, exterior siding damage etc. Stayed 3 nights and a large bag of hotel trash, ripped open by animals, sat at the right end door for 2 of those days. Sheets on the bed were scratchy. They also have crappy coffee bags (like tea bags) in disposable plastic trays which I would expect from a sub $100 lodging facility. I would love to see K-cup machines in the rooms. Latchstring across the street does have coffee to go however they don't open until 7AM. Did utilize laundry facilities and they were good and reasonably prices ($4.50 per load if I recall correctly) Loved being able to hike straight from the hotel in the early morning and evening after dinner, renting a UTV across the street and the Latchstring restaurant was very good. They also have a small bar in the lobby where you can take drinks to the patio, and robes to use at the hot tubs (did not use so can't comment) Do recommend a room number above 117/217 as those are away from the road which has a good amount of traffic. Even overlooks the driveway and odd overlooks the road (under X17) and trees (above X17). Overall I would probably stay again, depending on price.

Yelp
The location is great. But the hotel is run down. Everything feels depreciated and old. The rooms smell, the furniture is dated, the bedding is not fresh. I wish they remodeled this place and gave it a much needed facelift

Michael H.

Yelp
Wonderful time. We rented three UTVs for the afternoon. The staff was professional and friendly. We did have one minor mishap that was handled so promptly it need not be mentioned.

Yelp
The setting, nestled between mountains in Spearfish Canyon, lobby, including a grand fireplace, were stunning. The room was clean and comfortable. The restaurant, located across the street, was underwhelming, but adequate. This venue was included on our 9-day Orbridge Tour from Rapid City, SD to Jackson, WY. I'd rate the hotel 3.5 stars and the restaurant 2.5 stars.

Yelp
Made the mistake of going during Sturgis....Im not a motorcycle person....so it was crowded and loud till about 6pm but then everone cleared out. We had the best dinner at the Latchstring walleye? spelling and my husband had the trout. maybe leave off the cream sauce on trout or have on the side. It was awesome both fish were delish. FLUFFY homemade cheescake with REAL GRAHAM CRACKER CRUST . The best I have ever had-anywhere. THE SERVICE WAS GREAT. Our waiter was cute smart funny and accommodating. I will add his name soon.

Yelp
Majestic location in the middle of beautiful Spearfish Canyon! This place is a gem. It was truly a relaxing stay as we enjoyed the scenery with multiple hikes to waterfalls, meadows, and streams - all within close proximity. I found the staff to be so accommodating and, being a foodie, thought the food was superb (hint: the local walleye is amazing). Directly adjacent is UTV rentals so you have travel the backroads and explore things you would never see otherwise. Truly, an epic experience in all regards. My thanks to all staff for an absolutely wonderful stay!

Yelp
Excellent location in the middle of beautiful Spearfish Canyon! This July, we enjoyed the food, accommodations, and amenities with excellent service by the staff. It was truly a relaxing stay as we enjoyed the scenery with multiple hikes to waterfalls, meadows, and streams. Enjoy Devil's Bathtub if you are there in hot weather. We also enjoyed traveling the back trails of the Black Hills on the UTVs - great vistas and a ton of fun. You are also near Mount Rushmore, Needles Highway, Custer State Park, and Devil's Monument. A wonderful stay!

Yelp
I booked a slingshot rental for 8hr paid in full at time of booking. I was going on vacation to the area. The day before I received a call of a family emergency and to fly back to my home State immediately. I call Spearfish and explained what had happened and I needed to cancel my booking. The young lady said she would pass it on to management and they would give me a call. I never received a call and saw the $500.00 dollar charge on my credit card. I called Spearfish back and spoke with there manager he informed me that the young lady never past on the information. And he would speak with the General Manager and get back with me. The next day I received a call from one of the desk clerks not even the manager and was told we will not refund you your $500.00 dollars. I explained how I'm okay with a fee but 500.00 dollars it was and emergency. She said the GM said no it's policy. This is a terrible way to treat your customers. If I could give give zero stars I would. BEWARE.

Russ B.

Yelp
They canceled my reservation without my approval ,ask them who authorized it the wouldn't answer my question, I stayed there many times over the years and I will never make reservations there again, The manager said she will not refund my money

Yelp
This place is over priced and horrible customer service. We had to get a new key multiple times a day. They will not pick up your trash. We were there for five days and I went to front desk to ask where we take our trash, they said to leave at our front door. They never picked up the trash and it reeked so bad we had to find a dumpster on our own, which was the kind of hiking we didn't plan on while on vacation! They never brought us clean towels, we had to wash our own. Then when we left we got an extra $273.00 charge (on top of the over priced $1,600.00+ we already paid) because they said we stole all their dollar store dishes (which we did not), they said it took two hours more to clean than usual, and they said we ruined parts on the stove with marshmallow's which any five year old can clean with Easy Off. We also have a video of the room and how clean we left it. We tried to call and discuss and they would not reply until we disputed the charge with our card credit company which took over a month. Seriously what did we pay $1,600.00+ for anyway. We will never go back nor recommend to anybody. And my husband IS a nice guy Mr. Manager! PS: there was a strange lady lurking around the last 2 days and knocking on our door and saying "Is John here? Oh sorry wrong room". Maybe she stole the dollar store dishes!

Yelp
Very impressed with our 2 days here. The room, amenities, and the restaurant were all top notch. This place was perfect for getting away and we will be back. The UTV rental was also top notch.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant, the food was fantastic and the location is gorgeous! The staff were friendly, Liam in particular was really awesome and made some great recommendations. I would absolutely come back!

Yelp
My husband and I had the opportunity to stay at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge two times and we had a fabulous time on both occasions! The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. I highly recommend their accommodations and the service provided by their team. One of the staff went out of her way to set aside something I wanted to purchase from their gift shop and asked to hold the item until I returned home. When I arrived home I called, paid for the item, and she wrapped and shipped my package to me. I could not have been happier!

Yelp
I stayed here for my brother in laws wedding. The country and scenery is absolutely beautiful! Gotta put this out first. THERE IS NO CELLULAR SERVICE HERE AND THE LODGES WIFI IS SPOTTY (almost nonexistent). With that being said the lodge offers great activities like hiking, fishing, biking even UTV's, at a rental cost (which I didn't have time to experience). The room was clean and pretty comfy. They have an outdoor hot tub you can enjoy till mid nite. The lodge even has a bar that's open till 2 a.m. There's a gift shop with necessities and hoodies, shirts and caps. This place is rustic and the rooms feels like it. One of the downside is the walls are pretty thin so you can hear people running down the halls or talking. But the main selling point is the scenery and environment you're in. There's many hiking trails and scenic drives you can take. Deadwood is about 35 minutes away. I'm planning on staying here again next year with the notion of renting a UTV and doing some fly fishing. Also bring your own bottles of water and some snacks or even food to prepare. The only place close by to eat is a restaurant across the way that's really expensive and they take a long time to prepare your meals.

Yelp
Excellent stay. We came here expecting the best and we got the best. The room was very nice and my family including the dog loved it. I am from North Western Europe so the snow was wonderful to see.It made our view of the Black Hills even better. The one and only down of the whole trip was the restaurant across the street. It is terrible. But you don't come here to eat. Living free in Lead SD is the only place to be. And a shout out to One of the Staff Mrs McGinnis we had great craic together. An excellent employee.

Yelp
Amazing lodge in an amazing and scenic area! Be sure to take a hike to the falls. So beautiful. One short mile in and out!

Yelp
Tried to get a Bloody Mary. I was standing at the bar and the skinny bartender refused to acknowledge me. I couldn't see past the post and I figured there were people standing on the other side so I waited patiently. After a few minutes, a gentleman came to stand at the bar, after a few minutes he asked me if she had taken my order yet. I replied, and we stood there for a while. He said there were maybe 8 people sitting at the other side of the bar. I finally gave up & day down to wait for my friends. He stayed. He was served after 10 minutes of my leaving. I am from Los Angeles and know to be patient but when the server never acknowledges you, there is no point in giving them your money. There are places that will respect you and provide service. I did have my drink at another restaurant, across the street. To the owner of this place, you are loosing money with the female bartender; skinny with glasses. I will never bother to visit your establishment due to the poor service I received. I'm sure I am not the only one.

Mike C.

Yelp
We staid here for rally week. Never again! Way overpriced and the service was horrible. My wife asked for a glass of tap water and the bartender tried to charge her $2. Every door In The place slams, and the walls are paper thin so you can hear the people next to you. We put the service room sign on the door and the room was not serviced. Completely unacceptable! When I tried to talk to the front desk about these things they had nothing to say. I've never been treated like this.

Holly R.

Yelp
What a cute place! We enjoyed the amazing location, who would not love the backdrop! The Lodge was clean, the staff was great and we had a cute Bear on top of our loaner robes greeting us upon arrival. The bed wasn't really comfy and the hot tubs were a little iffy, otherwise it would have easily been 5 stars.

Yelp
I am writing this review as we used the Lodge to rent our UTV to explore the canyon with. We rented the Polaris Ranger 1000 which included helmets and a gps as well as emergency phone. The Polaris was new and in great condition. Safety was their priority and everyone had to watch a video as well as listen to a talk about how to operate the vehicle before you are allowed to use it on the trails. We rented it for the day and it was such a blast. We were on a point on the mountain where you could see several states. The view was amazing. We also saw a lot of wild life and things covered more ground than we would of hiking. I really wish I knew the guys name that helped us with set up at the UTV office as he was really nice, knowledgeable and also gave us some tips of some cool places to go see. I can not wait for next years vacation, I want to plan more than 1 UTV excursion. If you are unsure about it rent it for a half day and give it a try.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this lodge. Nice atmosphere in the lodge and a great patio for watching the interesting vehicles that drive the canyon. Especially enjoyed the canoe fire pit!!! THERE IS NO ELEVATOR to second floor. We had a suite (I think it was the Roosevelt Suite) that was over the patio and it was quiet despite activity downstairs and the road in front. Rooms in the back overlook a parking lot with mountains surrounding. The bathroom is divided into shower with separate bath and a toilet, sink is separate. Nice sitting area with kitchen area with microwave, full sized refrigerator and dishes for cereals, lunch. No cooking other than microwave. Television and fireplace with pull out couch allowed us (2 of us) to stretch out a bit. There is a small laundry facility on the first floor--quarters ($2/load for both washer and dryer) and laundry detergent available in gift shop. At this time there is no daily room service but they will bring you fresh towels and take old away.

C C.

Yelp
Don't bother, booking is a complete mess. When they then mess up your reservation, it gets cancelled without explanation. I called and they had no information for me other than "we are booked, can't find your reservation, too bad, it's not our fault" No offer to help out, no sorry, can we help figure something out, just a "someone else is to blame" God-awful way of treating customers and no way will I ever try to stay at this place.

Melissa P.

Yelp
This is a beautiful place! The huge lobby with the roaring fire and the panoramic view is just spectacular! There is no cell service there but that is why you go there. The hiking around the lodge is great and I cannot wait to go back! The staff was really friendly and the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Dee H.

Yelp
Don't trust the website. The advertised price for their packaged stays is not what you will actually pay. The two night Escape Package which is advertised as $270 and is listed as including two nights and some discounts for the restaurant would have cost us over $500. When asked for an explanation, all we got was confusion. Something about the first night being one price and the second night being more and you end up paying for the discounts. And this was midweek and off season. Don't trust them.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Very homey and inviting. The staff is awesome and the ROOMS ARE VERY CLEAN! Better than chain hotels. Definitely recommending and coming back

Yelp
The events coordinator- Hayley Johnson. Maybe she's nice once you put a check in her hand, but incredibly rude on the phone with my when I was inquiring about event space. She thought it was appropriate to first and foremost bitch at me about how she was working a SUNDAY. Oh dear god, how will she ever catch up on her leisure time?? Wake up, dear. You work in HOSPITALITY.

James D.

Yelp
Bit on the expensive side, but the room was clean, large in room hot tub. Area is super nice. Consider going when the rates are down, fall/spring

Yelp
A very cute, rustic, and sanitary place. My wife and I are travel nurses and we really enjoy places that take pride in their lineage and service. Worth the price and the staff as well as the other guests were very polite and thoughtful. Whoever posted this place is only one star is misguided and should be taken lightly

Liz M.

Yelp
No idea what it would be like to actually stay there. Made a reservation 2 months prior to our arrival, finally made it to the lodge after 9pm to check in (2 small children in tow) to find out that the reservation had evaporated. Someone apparently had reserved the entire facility for a wedding and -best I can tell- the events/reservation staff cancelled reservations to accommodate the larger group. No idea what actually happened. Thankfully the Holiday Inn in Spearfish still had rooms, and even upgraded us to a suite. Ended up being cheaper too. Holiday Inn front desk asked what had happened since they had checked in about 5 other parties that night for the same reason. Not worth the risk.

Liz K.

Yelp
Be very careful with making a reservation. We arrived with a confirmed reservation for a certain room type, only to find out they didn't have that room type available. The manager was flippant in his response and didn't seem to really care. We purposely booked online directly with the hotel to avoid this type of thing. The lodge is in a beautiful setting, so if you don't care about getting the room you get, you will enjoy the beautiful setting.

Yelp
I've been staying at this hotel for years, whenever I'm in the black hills area this is my go-to hotel. It's like a secret hide-away, secluded and peaceful. Always wonderful service. The decor is rustic and charming. The suite rooms are awesome. They have 2 hot tubs out on the upper level deck you can enjoy during a snow storm looking at the gorgeous surrounding rock outcropping cliffs of the canyon. You can walk to roughlock falls from the hotel. The restaurant across the street offers the most amazing food you'll ever have. They have a continental breakfast- you can choose from 5 different meals, all amazing. I can't recommend this place enough. It's gorgeous, and so much more than a typical hotel.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
The hotel has a rustic feel. The room was comfortable with a wonderful view. Our room also had a mini fridge and microwave. We didn't try the hot tubs on the deck, but they looked like they would be great on a cool night. My favorite part was the trail leading to Roughlock Falls. You can drive to the falls but walking is more fun. There is a pond behind the hotel with a lot of trout. The water is clear so you can watch them swim. They have a board walk so you can get closer to the action.

Yelp
I have been waiting several years to stay at Spearfish Canyon Lodge. All the pieces fell together in August 2016. Upon arrival, I was incredibly disappointed. It's a spectacular property with terrible management. NOTHING works in the lodge. From the fireplace at the front door, to the phones in the room. The internet was completely intermittent (unusable), the vending machines take your money and are out of product, the restaurant was running the A/C when it's 45 degrees outside (food was also cold). When a number of customers asked them to turn it off, they said that they couldn't because nobody had the key to the cover of the thermostat. While I was sitting in my room, another couple walked in with a key to my room. The lodge had double booked my room. Whatever the problem is, the employee responds that they are just doing what their manager told them to do. This is one of the WORST hotels I have stayed at in the past several years. I will be checking out early. I know it has a big reputation, but if you're an experienced traveler, you'll be completely disappointed.

Callie R.

Yelp
Tried to cancel a reservation and was hung up on. Not very good customer service whatsoever.

Yelp
VERY RUDE sales manager and outrageous prices! My fiancé and I looked around this place by ourselves and it was so beautiful that we fell in love with it. We were set on having our wedding here, and then AFTER speaking with the sales manager we changed our minds! She was so rude to us we took our business elsewhere. She said I could NOT have an outdoor reception or set up a tent outside. We had to use the small, run-down banquet hall facilities. She gave us two excuses saying 1.) their servers didn't have enough "training" to serve outside, and 2.) they would get stuck setting up the tent, so they didn't allow them. First of all, how hard is it to walk outside with a plate? I was a server for 5 years so I found that excuse outrageous. I've never heard of someone renting a tent, and the rental company NOT setting it up for you, so this was also a deflection. She said the only thing I was allowed to bring in were a wedding cake, and possibly flowers (but she strongly encouraged me to use their tacky silk flower arrangements). She said I could NOT bring in my own decorator, or personalize anything. She said I could only pick out from their decorations, and choose the color of my linens. The prices were astronomical! They wanted something like $45 for a fruit or cheese platter you could get from the grocery store and $20 for a pot of coffee. You had to order all of your food through them, so that way they could drive up their prices. They charged you out the rear for the food, the facilities, the tacky plastic decorating items, EVERYTHING! Basically the only service they offer here is a basic, cookie-cutter wedding package that is far too expensive! Don't even waste your time here, and stay away!

Abby M.

Yelp
We booked this lodge through LivingSocial.com and were so glad we did! The hotel is really rustic and lovely, the rooms were clean and the beds were super comfortable. The Latchstring Inn served excellent food and the service was great. Be aware: there is no cell service in the canyon and the internet was very spotty. BUT we were completely satisfied with our experience. In fact, I'm already hoping to stay at the lodge again. I'd like to take advantage of the hiking and biking in the canyon.
