"Downtown office worker standby Specialty’s Cafe and Bakery announced this weekend that all 55-plus of its locations — across California, Washington, and Illinois — would close for good after 33 years in business. According to an announcement on its website, 'current market conditions attributed to COVID-19 and shelter-in-place policies have decimated company revenues,' and its last day in operation will be Tuesday, May 19. A standby on many a San Francisco corner, Pleasanton-based Specialty’s is well-known to office workers for its catered lunches of large trays of sandwiches and pastries, with plenty of leftovers for post-meeting raids. For those workers, it’s the end of a cookie era. When it was founded in 1987, Specialty’s was a relatively fresh concept, baking all breads and pastries in house daily. All its sandwiches were made on fresh bread, and many pastries were handed to customers while still warm. Specialty’s eventually expanded into a multi-state chain, and was acquired by Mexico-based beverage and retail company FEMSA in 2016. But even as the quality of bakeries has risen across San Francisco, Specialty’s still satisfied a certain craving, providing quick breakfasts and lunches to busy working professionals. For other food businesses that largely serve office workers, who are now working and eating at home, it’s a large and ominous closing. So get your turkey sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies before they close on Tuesday, as the cafes and bakeries are cancelling and refunding any orders after that date." - Becky Duffett

I came here on xmas eve. They normally close at 5pm which I find is weird for a restaurant, but they closed earlier- at 2PM. I had spent lunch and a couple more hours sipping on coffee, eating a salad and working. Clean place, great healthy options that are plentiful and the employees are all very sweet. Will definitely come here again.

Great Cafe with amazing tasting sandwiches and cookies. Service is always quick and very friendly. Coffee is good. Quite Space for Working and Studying . Just that it would be good if they introduce Lunch Combo during weekdays.

Was my first time to this location. The facility is airy and open. With plenty of seating both inside and outside. The weather here is typically mild so having the partially covered outdoor seating is nice. Having Peet's coffee as part of the offerings is a great addition to start your day or afternoon pick me up. The sandwiches are large as is the pastry offerings. No one leaves this place hungry for sure. Restrooms were decent, not spotless but good. Wait staff was efficient and friendly. Plenty of parking and right off the freeway exit. Recommended for a quick bite or to meet up with some friends.

Food is fairly tasty but service was slow and price was high. Nearly 10bucks for a sandwich that isn't very filling. Also they have some fancy tablets for ordering on but no instructions. I decided to order from a human and seemed to get attitude because I wasn't savvy to their system. I'm still wondering if there were any options for my sandwich... Probably won't be going back if I can find other sandwich options nearby.

The food here is terrific! The sandwiches taste fresh and the soup is always a good choice. The ingredients in the salads are also very crisp and I always leave the store with one too many baked goods. I also think it is convenient to have a Pete's Coffee built into the restaurant, this gives you an option for some excellent coffee to go with your excellent meal. I think the option to use the self-ordering kiosk is great. This cafe is usually very busy which is why the option to order your food online prior to arriving is also an excellent option. I am never disappointed when i eat at this cafe for lunch or a quick bite for breakfast.
