Where to eat and drink in Grand Rapids | Eater Detroit

"I visited a secluded brewery housed in a 101-year-old auto shop off an alley and found a rotating selection of complex sour beers produced using a solera-style method in oak tanks so each new batch incorporates remnants of previous ones; highlights included subtly fruity, pastry-infused sours such as the rhubarb-and-vanilla March of Progress." - Serena Maria Daniels

The Best Breweries in Grand Rapids | Eater Detroit

"Speciation’s taproom is located in a 101-year-old auto shop in an alley off Wealthy Street. Renowned for its oak-aged and fruit-forward sours, crisp lagers, pale ales, and experimental brews featuring spontaneous fermentation, the taproom offers a unique tasting experience. Additionally, the brand Native Species Winery produces naturally fermented wines. The taproom frequently hosts pop-ups in its kitchen, such as OSO Provisions, which held a recent residency." - Courtney Burk

Great Road Trip Worthy Breweries to Visit in Southwest Michigan from Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Speciation’s Mitch and Whitney Ermatinger have been serving up next-level spontaneously-fermented, foeder-aged, lambic-style, and otherwise wild beers to the Beer City masses since 2016, following stints at sour-focused breweries in Colorado (where Mitch took home a couple Great American medals for his efforts). Not into the funkier side of the beer world? Good news - they also have a line of natural wines and wine spritzers called Native Species Winery, which are also pouring at their Wealthy Street taproom space." - Karl Klockars

If there was a 3rd space (not home but just as good, where you can relax and feel safe and make community), Speciation is it. Everyone who works here is completely lovely. They’re kind, thoughtful, and good humans, the sort of people you want to be friends with. You can put your feet up here and just be yourself. I haven’t yet touched on the beer yet but the beer is completely delicious and stellar, exceptional. It’s something to write home about, with interesting flavors, delicious and unexpected combinations (even for this foodie). They are known for their sours, but their slushies are extraordinary and I love their NA options. I always find something I love here, and not just one something, many somethings. Speciation is the place to meet friends or to come and work or to make new friends or to play trivia. There’s even a patio with lawn games. Speciation is the place to come in Grand Rapids, whether you’re from here or visiting for the weekend. It’s just right.

This place is in the parking lot and appears to be in a funny location. If you like sours this is the place to be. Lots of options for sours.

We love speciation!! So much so, that my now husband and I went on our first date there. So when it was time to find a wedding venue, we reached out to see if it was possible to host it at Speciation. Thankfully Mitch and the crew said yes, and we had literally the best party ever. When I say working with the specation team for our wedding was a breeze, I mean it. Any questions I had was answered quickly and with detail. The day of the wedding Jane and Carly took such good care of us and all of our guests. They handled our crew with grace and everyone had a great time. We were able to get into the venue early to do all the set up so that we could have a few hours of peace before the big day started. It was a beautiful space to have our wedding and we are so thankful we did. We also choose to have the team make us a wedding beer. We got to chat with Mitch for the ideas we had and he brought them to life. We went with a hot toddy inspired beer. They even let us submit our own label for the beer. It was a great gift for our guests, to have on tap during the wedding, and have some extras to drink in our first year married. If you're looking for an awesome place to host an event, I highly suggest reaching out and working with the speciation crew!

1st time stop and was very surprised at the Great tasting sours they had. No parking in back all spots are marked for the apartments so we parked on the street up front no biggy. If you dig Sours make the stop and enjoy their twist on this good style beverage.

This was another place we found on the Tag A Brew site for locally brewed beer. This was a quiet place right off Wealthy Street (drive slow or you will miss it). My husband had another flight here to sample their beers and he really enjoyed them also.

This is a great local brewery. The space they have is very inviting, the staff are very friendly and their beer is fantastic! I tried their Margarita sour and my friend had the blueberry lavender lager and both were great! Highly recommend if you are in the area and like beer!

The best sour beer crafter in Michigan. Hands down my favorite place to spend chill time with loved ones while sipping on handcrafted specialty beverages! Everything is good, some are great, and some are so amazing you only get to taste it once and it's gone. Don't miss this craft company if you have the chance to try anything they produce, you won't be disappointed. They even have "clean" beer now, meaning non-sour, and it's top notch just like their other products!

This is a relatively small brewery, tucked back off the street. There’s a decent amount of seating for their size and they have a nice little outdoor patio as well. Either in flavor or back story, most of their beer and wines are incredibly unique. They tend to brew things you actually won’t find most other places, which makes them stand out. My guess is you’ll want to grab a flight because you’ll want to try them all!
