"A Burlington coffee institution since 1993, this OG serves small batch, locally-roasted fair trade coffee and espresso drinks — it may not offer the third-wave coffee education like some other places in town, but it’s a great place for people-watching." - Heather Platt

Google
An amazing neighborhood spot! The location and interior space is really wonderful; the hours are superb. Prices also make it very easy to be a regular! The coffee is good, but not great—especially in a town as stacked with coffee options as Burlington. But the baristas are so friendly and the hours amazing. I think of this as a perfect weekday spot!

Google
Great Coffee and Food. Employees who sincerely want to help, as well as enjoyable to talk with.

Google
Cool coffee shop! Very chill, thrifty, hippy, nifty vibes. Free wifi, so some people had their laptops. So happy they had some gluten-free baked goods available as I needed a little snack with my latte! It was yum! Hubby and I sat and enjoyed our time. Bathroom could've been cleaner but the place was busy and only 2 workers, so I get it.

Nicole Navarrete

Google
Great coffee! Stopped by to get a bag of the maple flavored whole beans and got a free medium coffee with my purchase. It seemed like a cute place to hang out as a lot of people were there early in the morning on a Saturday. Would definitely visit again.

Google
Great chill out and read or study place. The waffleberry coffee is just epic. Also! The gluten-free baked goods are so good. I usually have to opt out of food at cafe’s so I seriously appreciate the effort and quality.

hamsa

Google
Absolute south end classic. Not much of a coffee or tea drinker, but the vibes are wonderful and the pastries are very good. Easy to find and great place both to stop in for a coffee or something small to eat or to hang out in and get some work done.

Google
We came here for the farm markets and met this local coffee store. People did not stop coming in. The business was good. I had hot chocolate+coffee while my wife had maple syrup flavored coffee.... It's a good rest spot for the relaxing atmosphere for your leisure time..... Recommended....

Google
let me start by saying i love love love this coffee shop. easily my favorite one in town. although i went in yesterday and got a pastry. i have a very serious tree nut allergy so i asked the staff what was in the cinnamon roll. the worker replied “ummm it’s a cinnamon roll”. it left me feeling quite stupid for asking. luckily another employee kinda helped but then informed me they didn’t have an ingedient list. i’ve been to several establishments and asked about allergy stuff and most of the time they’re super kind, understanding, respectful and helpful. they’d even have an ingredient list i could lookat. i just found myself wishing for that yesterday.

Yelp
Great coffee shop, beautiful art and light, heavenly smells. Honey almond milk latte pictured.

Hunter E.

Yelp
Yummy coffee! Friendly staff and reasonable pricing. I've tried a number of the lattes and they've all been great. They have a seasonal speciality menu too.

Steve F.

Yelp
Sorry, but their coffee was not good. I could not drink their espresso blend, believe me I've been making espresso for 25 years, this stuff is terrible. Gave them another try recently with Decaf Monsoon Malabar. Not as bad, but still very subpar. Sort of drinkable, but my wife hates it. My other source of Decaf Monsoon Malabar has dried up, so sad that this was not good. I don't know what the fuss is. Both coffees were sour and old.

Cheryl D.

Yelp
Great coffee! Open early ! There was no one else there, so the wait time was zero!!

Raymart D.

Yelp
Whew I needed a coffee early in the morning driving back to NYC from Vermont and did Speeder & Earl's deliver with some strong coffee! It is a coffee shop located in the industrial/arts district area of Burlington. You can easily spot it with their logo flag. Walking in it is a well-sized space. There are your typical drinks and because it was blazing hot outside, my partner & I opted for The Ed which is the cold brew plus a double shot of espresso and a hint of maple (because Vermont!). First sip you'll get a smoothness, a light fragrant sweetness, and a jolt of caffeine. It's a great drink for sure. They also sell beans to go. Happy drinking and remember: Don't deny, satisfy!

Christy P.

Yelp
They have some really unique lattes here! I tried the one with chocolate and cherry and it was good, but the Clockwork Orange was truly memorable. It has fresh orange peel and almond flavor. They have so much more on the menu to try, it's almost overwhelming. Service is a little slow but it is definitely worth the wait. I would definitely come here for coffee every morning if I get a chance to visit Burlington again.

Stephanie L.

Yelp
The cold brew here is amazing. Coffee is strong and really great flavor. The way to do it is with oat milk and maple syrup. They also have kombucha and CBD seltzer in the fridge. Huge seating area inside and some benches outside.

Hillary G.

Yelp
Love the relaxed vibe of Speeder and Earls. They have a variety of syrups to make any sort of drink you want, as well as fun specialty drinks. There are about 10 small tables inside with additional seating outside. Food is limited, but there are tasty donuts, cookies and pastries available all day. This is a consistently good spot, and close to Great Harvest, where you can get food!

Mandy W.

Yelp
Great coffee selection, picked up a bag to bring back home! The staff was excellent - we actually forgot the bag when we left and they were awesome and brought it out to us! We enjoyed a cup of the maple French roast flavor (so good we drank it black) as well as a maple latte. Definitely worth a stop when you're in Burlington!

Lauren F.

Yelp
Very quiet, peaceful place to pick up coffee to go or stay a while and work. The staff is very kind and quite willing to give suggestions! I love their cinnamon and vanilla or raspberry iced latte. They are less creamy and "indulgent" than the typical latte, however, but worth it (and cheaper than competitors!).

Tony L.

Yelp
Great solid place to get coffee, wind down, write your term paper, and get a greasy feel for the Vermont feel. The following encounter is informative if Speeder and Earl (and Burlington's style): Guy: I was wondering why there weren't more people in here. Batista: Oh right, it's Columbus day. I guess people have off? Guy: Yeah I never know. I walked in wondering if I should pay, or if I should just demand things. Batista: Yepp, just come in, take what you want and then just murder us all. Guy: Sounds great! Have a wonderful day, thanks again! Oh sweet Vermont, your sarcasm when it comes to horrible past colonial activities is refreshing and warms my heart. I can't wait to retire here and have Speeder and Earl's every day.

Lesley J.

Yelp
Stopped in to work remotely for a few hours while I was visiting Burlington (born and raised here but moved to MA so very familiar w/ S&E). Space on Pine is great. very roomy and was easy to grab a table around 8am. Space to park in the back w/ no worries and the staff is very friendly. They have a great coffee selection and custom drinks. Wish they had more food options but otherwise, the roast profiles are up my alley in flavor and darkness. the only thing I'd change from an atmosphere perspective is to dial down the volume of the music - and that is just a personal preference. It wasn't over the top loud.

Kristen C.

Yelp
Lattes are really smooth here. I got the double shot in a 12 oz and it was perfection. They have cinnamon, coco powder, and nutmeg on the side for you to use also- which is always nice. The cold brew is pretty good too, has a little chocolate aftertaste and is smooth. Some places the cold brew can taste like watery Folgers- not here. The blueberry scones are also real good too, I like when they are dense and have a lot of blueberries! Ambiance is great too, good place to study or read the paper. Very chill and the staff is super friendly. Place can get busy, but you'll get in and out quickly. It is attached to an art gallery too- so its a nice little hang with the coffee.

CM R.

Yelp
Very odd place with weird vibes. Almost feels like a warehouse. Overworked unfriendly barista

Jack M.

Yelp
S&E's is set in an old warehouse that kept a lot of that aesthetic while also creating a warm coffee shop space. The shop is truly a coffee shop with a few pastries but it excels in coffee and tea. You can use a credit card to pay (that is a big plus) and they seem set up to study if that is your jam. There were plenty of people set up all over the shop working on both occasions that we visited. The sad thing is that they did not have hot cider either time we went. The bathroom is by the imposing, industrial sized, wooden door but they do have one. While they do offer paper cups, the unspoken norm seems to be: bring your own. This may pertain more to VT as a whole and not just S&E. Our friends advised us that the shop is a good go-to but not their favorite coffee in town. The coffee selections seemed good but that is just the unintelligent musings of a tea drinker. Certainly a good shop for a hot morning beverage.

Richard K.

Yelp
A wonderful selection of locally brewed coffee and a standout place in the city that takes coffee seriously. Who knew, but Burlington Vermont is becoming a hotbed of artisan coffee roasters. This funky little place is well off the beaten path, but puts out a great selection of solid coffee. Everything available to drink is also available to go, either ground or whole bean. This place is for serious coffee aficionados.

Annabelle W.

Yelp
I had a maple latte with oatmilk. So good! I would definitely recommend this place! The latte wasn't too sweet

Hanschen H.

Yelp
We have done business with Speeder & Earl's Coffee, in person, online, by US mail and by E-mail. Never any problems. They are always helpful. Selections are properly roasted and fresh. Service is outstanding. Try the Guatemala beans. Great flavor and aroma. In good weather, sit outside under an umbrella and watch the happy Vermonters and tourists stroll by while you sip your excellent coffee.

Brian M.

Yelp
What are you thinking Speeder and Earl!? I can't believe what you did to me. My wife, son and I decided to take a stroll to Speeder and Earls. I walked in and ordered a cup of coffee. There were a large variety to choose from, I said to the nice lady behind the counter that I'd just like the house special. She let me know that there wasn't one that was called the 'special.' Okay I am fine with this, but then she told me that with the one cup that she handed to me, I could try as much coffee as I wanted. I could have every flavor if I'd like. Well, of course I had to have some of every flavor. They were all good and so, now I'm hyped up on joe! I really like the atmosphere. I was talking to someone I met who asked me where I lived. I told her and she replied, "ohhh.... you're by the best Speeder and Earls!" Well, it the only one I've been to, so I suppose I cannot talk to that. But, it would seem based on one person whose name I cannot remember, that this one is the best!

Katherine S.

Yelp
Excellent coffee, micro aggressive barista. We frequent this coffee shop and, typically, enjoy the coffee, pastry, staff and vibe. This morning, we walked to the counter (no line at the time), stood in front of the register, smiled at the two staff standing behind the counter (neither was preparing a beverage) and greeted them with "good morning." One staff member smiled at us; the other frowned and abruptly directed us to move "to the side" so they would have space to "call out" orders---NOTE: There were no orders being made at the time for other customers that we would have been "in the way" of. Startled by the unmerited aggression, we shifted to the right toward the pastries. We placed our order, paid, tipped, gathered our beverages, and sat down to read. I looked up occasionally to see how this barista treated others and did not detect similar aggression. We love supporting Speeder and Earl's. This experience left us saddened and confused as it was so out of the ordinary. One wonders what triggered the aggressive response to a smile and wishing a fellow human being "good morning."

Salina H.

Yelp
This was one of my last stops in Vermont before going home. The place was spacious and the barista was friendly. I enjoyed the maple latte and bought a bag of beans home for my mom. She raved about the coffee! I shared a few other bags of coffee I bought from various places in VT and she mentioned Speeder's was by far her favourite

Abbey L.

Yelp
Quickly became one of the favorite coffee places while staying in the Burlington area! Conveniently located on pine street with plenty of street parking, this friendly coffee shop has delicious coffees and teas with service that is quick and friendly. My absolute favorite drink is the Dirty Chai. Cannot go wrong with any drink you get, the coffee is great. You can even grab some beans to take home!

Ben S.

Yelp
This is a nice little local coffee shop in Burlington. They have a decent selection of coffees and of course other morning beverages for your caffeine fix. The staff is helpful with any questions about the menu so don't hesitate to ask about any of their drinks. They have quite a few tables so you shouldn't have a problem finding a quiet spot to read a book or pull out the laptop to write the next best seller. This is a must visit spot for anyone that near downtown. Support your local coffee shop!

Aleczander S.

Yelp
The drinks are great and the service is friendly, but terrrrribly slow; don't think you can just swing by and grab a coffee if you're on the go, it takes at least 15 minutes. Drip coffee is self serve. They sell beans and ground coffee here at good prices, great variety as well.

Ridge W.

Yelp
Great coffee staff & atmosphere- WiFi connection to get work done Scones were great too!

Kim M.

Yelp
Speeder & Earl's Coffee will always remind me of writing my dissertation. As this was one of my favorite places to go and stay at. Dependable WiFi, friendly faces and bottomless coffee. Love that the culture here is to share tables once they start getting full.

Ying L.

Yelp
It was a rather cold day so I decided that I would afford a little warm treat for myself. I head into the coffee shop and immediately like the laid back grungy atmosphere. Music is not too loud and there's free wifi. There's not too many customers on a Wednesday afternoon either. I order a hot cocoa, and the cashier asks me what kind of milk I'd like. I choose skim milk. Then I choose a chocolate croissant, and then I'm informed that it ran out. And then I take a good look at the measly pastries I have left, nothing looks that appealing. I understand that no one really gets breakfast at 3pm but would it hurt to have stocked up on more pastries? I choose a cinnamon bun. The texture is flaky instead of doughy, so I already am annoyed by the amount of crumbs I got on my small plate. And it tastes like wood chips until I get into the middle of the bun, and then it's like a diabetic punch in the mouth. It's too sweet. I leave the bun unfinished, and that's the first time I've ever put down a sweet of any kind. But I was seriously dreading the next bite. However, I have to give credit for their hot cocoa. The cream on top was lovely, I enjoyed the drink.

Matt R.

Yelp
Great spot, great coffee, great service! Love the quirky vibe of this place. This is a go to stop in Burlington.

Dennis D.

Yelp
Cool location, friendly staff but coffee not good, burned milk, paper cup.. so not the place to go to for best coffee experience...

Jamie G.

Yelp
Speeder & Earl's has totally saved my butt this semester. $2.50 gets you a bottomless mug of coffee plus tip, and so long as you're courteous about how much space you take up, you can stay for as long as that chapter takes to read. Coffee flavors on "tap" change daily, and I've enjoyed every flavored coffee/specialty drink I've ordered. Friendly, knowledgeable staff, great study space/great place to meet folks for coffee. I wish a little that they stayed open later on weekends, but since customers tend to peter out around 4 or so, I can't legitimately expect them to be open later than 5. Five stars.

Chris H.

Yelp
This review is 2 stars because of the service. If I could rate just the service/ambience, I'd give 0 or 1 stars. If I could rate just the coffee, it would be 5 stars. I've been coming to this specific Speeder and Earl's location for over 6 years now. My parents have been drinking Speeder's since it first started and they passed their love of good coffee onto me. Speeder's usually satisfies my craving for awesome coffee and I buy their beans by the pound as well. I hope that brief history serves to couch my review somewhat because, contrary to how it may seem, I do love Speeder and Earl's. Unfortunately, I went into the Pine Street location to get some coffee beans and a cappuccino. While the cappuccino was pretty tasty, as always, the service and ambience were absolutely atrocious. It seems like whenever I go in there now there's always a HUGE line of yuppies (I appear pretty yuppy sometimes too, no judgment) which sucks but I've come to expect it due to the annoyingly popular arts riot next door. What I really can't overlook is the low-effort service I received while there. Both of the baristas had no clue what beans they had in stock and were unwilling to find out for me, update the list of beans by the pound available, or do anything else except tell me "Oh yeah, we're frequently out of all kinds of stuff, it really depends on the grower's season," which is a completely garbage excuse in general, but especially for the kind of service I received. I know that they can run out of some varieties quickly due to demand but making me guess at a list of coffees until I hit one that's in stock is completely unacceptable (not to mention it would take forever). I love Speeder's but I honestly can't keep buying product from a company where, on the rare occasion I go into the actual store/shop, they have hired useless employees that treat me like dirt.

Andre J.

Yelp
Cute spot, friendly barista, and AMAZING coffee! "THE ED" is a great drink which consists of maple roasted brewed coffee and a double shot of espresso. With a little whole milk, it's a great pick me up and it's the perfect amount of sweetness without being overpowering. I will definitely be coming back for whole bean coffee to-go.

Megan C.

Yelp
It's always fun to try out the local coffee stops when you're an out-of-town visitor, especially in a place as quirky and unique as Burlington. It gives you a nice feel for the local culture and is a great way to get in on what people are in to doing for fun in the area. Speeder & Earl's was laid-back, chill, and it immediately appeared as though the employees were having a good time and were passionate about coffees and teas. Great signs! This shop has all the requisite local Vermont coffee shop goods: coffees and teas by the pound, several different milk/non-dairy choices, passionately-brewed coffees and well-tamped espressos, plus delicious local treats and baked goods. Hubby and I shared a cinnamon roll and it was sooooo good! I also loved my Peppermint Freeze Latte and the rest of my group of friends enjoyed their green teas, Mocha Latte, and Double Espresso. I liked that their cups are compostable/recyclable...so Vermont. Prices were fair, and definitely less than the gouging I've sadly become "alright" with due to my Starbucks addition back home. I was spoiled by Speeder & Earl's and the other local shops in VT!

David B.

Yelp
Speeder and Earl's Pine Street store is my favorite place in town to have coffee and get an hour or two of work done. The coffee drinks are delicious, and flawlessly-made by the expert and friendly baristas. The store has a spacious feel to it, with wooden tables, making this place mouse and laptop-friendly, though only about half of the spots have outlets nearby, so if you're bringing your computer, have some battery power ready. And one is not as likely to encounter another customer gabbing loudly on the cellphone as happens all-too-often at other coffee establishments in town. My only complaint is that when it gets busy, unlike other Ma And Pa coffeeshops where Ma and Pa help the baristas, at Speeder and Earl's the owners generally act all aloof and ignore the lines. Not a problem if you're not in a rush to be somewhere.

Felisha K.

Yelp
Solid coffee spot with no frills. I had a Maple French Roast and bf had a Speeders Blend with 2x's espresso shots. Everything tasted great so we ended up buying some beans to go. Would come back for coffee and some quick bites (pastries, bagels, granola, etc.).

El L.

Yelp
a great shop and a great product. the woman who helped us was really funny and helpful AND they sell the boston globe. everybody wins.

Alyssa B.

Yelp
My all-time favorite coffee! Love their maple iced coffees. Staff is always upbeat and friendly. They also offer local baked goods; Meyers Bagels, Mirabelle's sweets, etc.

Lida G.

Yelp
Best coffee in Burlington, lots of great options for coffees and baked goods. Nice vibes inside and friendly helpful staff. Maple French Roast is heavenly. Way better than crowded and overpriced Uncommon Grounds.

Chris Y.

Yelp
Decent coffee; Questionable service. Went in for a cup about 45 min prior to closing one day. Virtually all of the self-service carafes were empty, and those with any coffee were lukewarm to ice-cold. When this was mentioned to the barista (by multiple customers, no less), she replied that they were closing soon, and she wasn't planning to make any more coffee this late in the day...unacceptable. As a customer who has already paid for a cup of hot coffee, I expect to be supplied with just that, up until the establishment locks its doors. How hard is it to brew a pot of hot coffee for paying customers on a cold day? I don't think I'll be frequenting this place.

Emily P.

Yelp
I love this local coffee joint. Nice and strong brews, great baked goods, and a chill staff. Enjoy!

Jared C.

Yelp
I love coming here! It's cheap (price) coffee and a super friendly staff. The atmosphere makes for a great meeting space (not a huge group). For some reason, this place is way better than the Church Street locations. I enjoy their Maple Lattes and skinny drinks!

Amy S.

Yelp
I went to get a cup of coffee today, the one thing that a coffee shop should do well. Unfortunately, my latte was poorly made. There was not enough espresso, and it was accompanied by screeching, over-steamed milk, resulting in no foam and weak flavor. I requested the barista to please make the drink again, which she kindly accommodated, but it turned out exactly the same. I've been here many times, and this kind of inconsistency is really unacceptable. I don't fault the barista... Speeder and Earl's: Please train your baristas better. It's not an easy job and your employees deserve to know how to properly perform the main task they were hired for at their workplace.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Out of towner in Burlington for the day and sticking to my rule - when in BVT, drink lots of coffee. At first sight & taste, I'm a fan of this place. Went with the maple iced coffee - as a non-VT native, not something I see often - and it certainly had the maple syrup effect without being overpowering. Just the right amount of sweet while still being a pretty powerful cup. Good place to get work done too - mixing business with pleasure, stayed in the building for a couple hours with my nose in the laptop. No distractions! Only saw one place for an outlet. Must be the hottest table on the premises. Would love if there were a couple more - but if that's the biggest knock I have on a place, it's worth 5 stars. Will return when back in town!

Lisa D.

Yelp
So happy that they're in the south end! Speeder & earls makes quality coffee and the shop is cute. Their iced coffee is superb!

Matt P.

Yelp
This is the best coffee shop in Burlington. The atmosphere is wonderful and relaxed. Outlets are few and far between if you bring your computer, but I usually just bring a book and wait for an outlet to open up. The free wi-fi is very fast. The coffee itself is terrific. If you visit, make sure to try a 'Clockwork Orange' or a 'Peppermint Freeze'. I always bring a pound of Speeder's home with me so I can enjoy every morning. And the coffee is brewed right in the store, so you know it's fresh. Finally, I have to mention the awesome baristas. Not only will these lovely ladies make you a cup of coffee, but they will also strike up a friendly conversation, unlike some other area coffee shops. So come to Speeder's for coffee and wi-fi but stay for the atmosphere and awesome staff.

Blanka N.

Yelp
Rise and shine folks. It's going to be a beautiful Friday! Still a little tired? No problem- visit these guys and you will have your pick me up in no time! Though busy, the service is quick and the staff friendly. Join them for you morning coffee or tea and spend the rest of your day on the right foot.

Nathan H.

Yelp
Great place to grab coffee - the staff is nice and the product is excellent. I'm not a huge fan of the eclectic, haphazard decor and the drafty doorways, so I rarely linger there for long. More than once I've thought tables were sticky/not clean. But it's a beloved institution and they're doing plenty right - I'll keep going there.

RJ K.

Yelp
We have been getting coffee here for the past 16 or 17 years, long before the first Starbucks came to Burlington and changed the coffee landscape forever. But Speeder & Earl's continues to be one of my favorite haunts in B-town, along with the dark and sightly mysterious Muddy Waters and the often-too-crowded Uncommon Grounds. Speeder and Earl's roast their beans on site, which is quite a pleasant sensory experience. The staff is always perfectly chill; the coffee is fresh and strong; the place is (relatively) clean; it's quite sunny and friendly and there's almost always a seat. I am not a fan of rich pastries or double mocha lattes with almond milk (whatever that is); I just enjoy a cup of locally-roasted hot and strong super-fresh brewed coffee, and that's what you will always get here. Fair prices too: $1.40 for small, $1.70 medium, and up. Hail S&E !

Dan B.

Yelp
Love their coffee, some of the strongest I've ever had. BUT, when sitting in the back corner near the swinging doors, there are more flies than a cow farm. It's seriously ridiculously annoying. Wish they would get a fly zapper or something. It takes away from the atmosphere and experience and good coffee.
