8 Notable Restaurant and Bar Closures to Know in Portland for July 2025 | Eater Portland

"The cafe inside the Woodblock Chocolate manufactory will close after July 25 as ownership "decided the time is right to focus their energies on their downtown location—the gravitational pull of theJames Beard Public Markethas much to do with that. They will be operating inside the Market when it opens." The cafe may return to the east side some day, however." - Harry Cheadle

Stopped by Spella for the first time today. Ordered an espresso. There’s a small counter where you can drink it if you get it to stay. I also got a complimentary sparkling water to cleanse my palate. The espresso is hand pulled and tastes great. If you buy a bag of beans you get a free espresso. Will definitely be back for that. The space is tiny but service is great.

Wow, what a little gem of a place. I originally was planning on a new shop every day (because it's Portland so I could) but that first cup sold me, and I went back every morning, and sometimes afternoons. I was recently in town at the end of September and got to know the most wonderful barista who really set the tone of the space. Personable and friendly, gave great food recommendations and a real treat for a tourist like myself. The vibe and energy of this place is incredible, just a calm oasis in the sea of the of the hustle and bustle of the city. The espresso I had was amazing . This is not your second wave shop, where often coffee can be a complement to the beverage but rather shop who showcases their roasts, and it is a wonderful espresso to elevate the way they have. Don't let their size, or perceived "busyness" deter you. The barista(s) are more than competent and truly understand the Italian style of espresso, little cups meant to be enjoyed with haste. You will be surprised how quickly that cup is in your hand. All in all, a wonderful experience.

My first trip to Portland from AZ and this is by far my favorite place for coffee the whole trip. Starbucks was put to shame with the flavor of the drinks and cost comparison. But my reason for wanting to come back is the knowledge and interaction with a very nice barista (Ascott). This individual was friendly, engaging, and really took time with each customer (regular or not) to have a great experience and genuine conversation.

My husband and I stopped in Portland for a few days on our honeymoon and we started each morning there with a cappuccino from Spella. Absolutely delicious espresso and the café has the sweetest vibe. Can’t wait to return someday

Best espresso beans. Ordered Rossalina Espresso beans. They were shipped the same the beans were roasted, and I received them in just a few days. This espresso blend is right up there with Lusso Gran Miscela Carmo and Vivace Vita, and IMO (according to my personal taste anyway), even better. Lots of body, depth, richness, and a lingering creamy aftertaste with notes of chocolate and hazelnut. It's a more traditional Italian blend than Lusso GMC or Vivace Vita. An incredible coffee. I'll be ordering more. Shipping costs to another state were very reasonable. No tax.

Google
Some of the best coffee I’ve had! We went to a number of the top rated coffee spots in downtown Portland and this one was our favorite. The espresso, cappuccino, and flat white were wonderful. The location is very small though, so you may have to wait outside of there is a line.

I haven’t been to every shop, but I have definitely made the rounds. Absolutely the BEST coffee in Portland. Just big enough for a half a dozen people to stand and wait.

The service was great. Very small space and mostly espresso type drinks. The brewed coffee is stronger than expected. Theee small tables in the hall if you want to stay and sit for a few.

Yelp
Delicious coffee!!! (Not open on the weekends, which is a bummer) I'll just have to come during the week!

Yelp
Oh, at last, Spella is back downtown! My favorite espresso on the planet! My drink is a "Honey Bunches of Oats," a cappuccino with oat milk and honey. Sigh! So wonderful! Try the chai! It has REAL spice and, if you like it milder, just ask them and they will adjust it to your taste, but the balanced, fragrant, and fresh spices will still shine through to brighten your day! Eckish? Try the pastries from Fleur de Lis. My favorite is the almond ring. Chocolates will be coming soon!

Yelp
Spent a week in Portland on business. Travel throughout the country for my job. The highlight of my trips is waking up early and trying out the local shops in each major city before I start the work day. This one I was looking forward to because of Portland's reputation for good coffee. Well, I will say I was unimpressed with all (Good coffee, Barista, Stumptown, Case Study) except for Spella Cafe. Very good lever shots. Very tasty and strong traditional Italian espresso. Mark my works: Portlands rep as a go to destination for coffee will hinge on this small cafe. As for the other coffee shops, I pull a much better shot and prepare better milk based drinks on my E61 heat exchanger at home. I'm serious. No exaggeration.
