7 Essential Charleston Cornbreads - Eater Carolinas

"Burnt honey miso butter isn’t the typical accoutrement to cornbread, but the guys at Spero aren’t about the ordinary. Try the bread flight to sample this Southern-meets-Japanese goodness." - Erin Perkins

We had a few of the small plates and the bread flight. Everything was delicious! Our favorites were the bologna steam buns and the ox tail dish. We finished off with milk and cookies which were truly special - served on a silver platter fresh out of the oven. I can't recommend the cookies enough. Our server was wonderful and knowledgeable. She took excellent care of us

Spero is one of the best restaurants in Charleston! I absolutely love this place. It's super low-key in terms of decor and location so please don't go here if you are a snob and care about that kind of thing because it's not the place for you. But, if you are a foodie and like to taste lots of different plates with amazing flavors, then this is the spot. And....it's not crazy expensive! With a group of four, you can try almost all the tasting plates and even entrees and be blown away. Don't miss the desserts either, so good. Chocolate heaven. Can't wait to go back!

The food here is excellent. They have a wide-ranging menu, a lot of stuff with an asian twist. I loved the Korean sandwich, and we all liked the scotch eggs, which I haven't seen on a menu in a long time. I have a very unsophisticated beer pallet, and they were able to satisfy me with the 40 oz Miller High Life. 🙂

We had an amazing dinner at Spero tonight. I knew we were off to a good start when the chef brought an amazing fruit plate for our two-year old granddaughter. It even had little tiny cubes of watermelon that delighted her. The beef tallow biscuits on the bread and butter flight were amazing. Pan roasted okra that was tender and crispy and tossed with a tomato chutney. But the piece de resistance was the fried chicken. I've been eating fried chicken for 55 years in every state from Texas to Carolina. The fried chicken at Spero is just about the best I've ever eaten. Interesting wine list, local beers on tap, and delightful staff. Everyone was personable and engaging and made for a wonderful meal. We will be back. Maybe tomorrow.

My third visit, consistently excellent food at a fair price. Try the fried chicken sandwich! Or deviled eggs! Or one of everything please! Casual vibe, friendly staff. Great place to meet a friend, a boyfriend or bring your Dad.

Very friendly staff. Really great prices. Decent beer selection. I only gave them three stars because the food wasn't quite up to par. I had cornbread, rabbit wings, and the Korean sandwich. The food choices seemed ambitious and different while the taste was just mediocre.

This is food worth not sharing. My companion and I are visiting Charleston and we are both fond of divey, off beat dining establishments. We saw the online chatter about Spero and thought we would check it out. I ordered the lamb sandwich and my companion ordered the bahn min style sandwich. I'll say for the price, both of the meals were exceptional. We've eaten at several trendy spots in town in the higher price range, and these sandwiches we're easily a better culinary experience. The texture, flavor combinations and presentation were simply perfect. I will add the service was exceptional as well. Our server/bartender made a point of engaging with us and providing further dining suggestions.

Great staff, awesome food. Everything we had on the menu was well worth the cost. Not that anything was very expensive. If you're an adventurous, fun person this is the place to visit for dinner. You won't be disappointed. I suggest everyone in your party gets something different to share. Everything is very unique and you don't want to miss out!
