The date shake here is excellent, only lacking in bigger chunks of dates. It was so good I couldn't put it down. Nice little spot and very welcoming staff. If you like dates, this is your place. There's also wine, candy, apparel, a variety of hot sauces, and other treats. It's really enjoyable. We'll be back, and I highly recommend this spot .

Great place to get Dates shack in Phoenix. They also sell high quality dates. My suggestion is to make the shack less sweeter. Use an alternative to ice cream. It would be healthier

Amazing dates, and the place is so beautiful. If you go outside to can see a nice little wake way that takes you through a little pond area and you can see palm trees grown all around. We came from Arizona to get some bahree dates however they didn’t have only 3 pounds. We also ordered the date shack which is amazing, must try… all times of date products

Awesome date shop that also sells other local AZ products. The date shake was amazing! Ashley was very knowledgeable about the different variety of dates they sell. It is easily accessible if you are biking on the AZ canal trail or the Indian bend trail:)

The date shakes are fabulous! Creamy and dreamy! They have 3 choices for what size serving you want. Wish they improved the outside seating area though.

We were here for a day trip from Texas & decided to stop here on our way back to the airport. Everyone is so nice & the date shakes were AMAZING! We highly recommend!

Another fabulous visit here this year. This has become a bit of a tradition, much like pumpkin spice lattes when the weather changes. Fall visits to Sphinx Date Co is a must for me, because I'm crazy about the Black Sphinx dates! Don't get me wrong, they have a lot of other great stuff too, but those dates are my favorites! I was excited to see Wild Tonic sold here. I love how they support Arizona made products! Additionally I got some Papaya spears with very few additives (wish they had cubes also) for my granola. This year I decided to try fresh Yellow Barhi dates and they were such a fun experience (I would do it again next year). They're crunchy and crisp like an apple, but also fairly sweet (not quite as sweet as a dried date though). If you get a chance, grab a bag! Their Large Grade Medjool are the nicest I've ever seen. The Khalasa has quickly become a favorite along with the Black Sphinx. The Kustawi was something new for me and good also! So glad we have such a special unique gem in Scottsdale.

My wife and I like to walk around the neighborhoods we travel to and so while walking to the grocery store to get some items, we walked by this place and it caught our eye (we loved the logo and the name was intriguing). I wasn't sure what to expect from a date store but there was a good assortment of dried goods, specialty food, and local eats available to browse through. I was eyeing cactus pear candy the whole time while I was here and they had big containers of the jellies that looked good. We also got some dried mango for our kiddos and a couple other things. Prices were very good and we knew that the stuff on the shelf was very fresh and hadn't been sitting in some back room in a tourist trap. I watched a lady order a date shake to see what that was all about. Basically a lot of vanilla ice cream and some dates thrown in for good measure. I was expecting something healthier but hey, can't go wrong with ice cream =)

I love their dates! So soft and chewy, not hard. They have a great taste, brown sugar. This is my third order.

All the stars for this place, their dates, date shake and staff. Best Date Shake near Phoenix by a mile. We had a lovely visit and after inquiring a little about the date varieties, a worker said, "c'mon over to the desk and let us walk you through some samples" and cracked open a handful of cases for us. Black Sphinx didn't harvest well this year, but there's still lots to be excited about.

Obsessed with the date shakes here!! So nice to sit on the patio and enjoy one. I also love their assortment of gifts/ foods that are local. I come here when I need a gift for friends in other states.

Nice place to find local products, including flours from Hayden flour mill. It might not be easy to find the entrance but I passed by many times and knew where to turn into. I ordered small date shake. It is sweet but addictive. I also got a box of dates. There are many types to choose from and I feel like the dates here tastes better and fresh.

I was told about this place by a friend and I am grateful for the tip. Wonderful place with knowledgeable staff and terrific dates of many kinds. We had some dates that were butterscotch-y and others that were caramel-y as well as the typical medjool dates. And they had much more than just dates such as interesting grains, jams and jellies, and premade gift baskets. Well worth stopping by even if you are not a fan of dates. However, you may find one that you like.

I can't say enough good things about this precious little store in Scottsdale. I was looking for gifts to give to friends in the East Coast that are unique to Arizona, so I wandered into this quaint little shop. I was greeted by the proprietor who was not only a font of knowledge, but she was enthusiastic and friendly and offered great gift-giving advice such as what items would travel best, how to keep them fresh until travel date, etc. I truly appreciate that all the products were locally sourced. I was able to buy all of my gifts, ranging from dates, to pecans and cactus candy from this one trip to Sphinx Date Co. So glad I found this gem of a store so convenient to my home in the East Valley!

A friend of mine recommended trying a Date shake while we were in Scottsdale. We were intrigued and curious and so glad that we stopped to investigate! Not only did we get try our shake, we went back 2 more times, ah-mazing!!! The owners were fabulous and friendly, and I love that they had a nice sampling of Arizona made products. We will be stopping there every time we go to Scottsdale!

Really cool novelty shop. Date shake was the main draw for me, and it was delicious. The shop has an assortment of Date forward goods for curious shoppers to explore. My kids tried some of my shake and they thought that it was pretty good. That's saying a lot with the semi picky eaters they are. Get by this place and take a sip!

This pantry market-like venue is welcoming,cute, and modern all at the same time! It is a local favorite that is busy non-stop and it's not surprising why. While shopping for a house warming party they offered us free date samples which was a sweet touch. Purchased a bottle of wine and date trays and everyone raved about both! As I said before, the rumors are true! This place is an amazing local favorite and it is definitely worth the wait!!

I needed something custom made and the co-owner Rebecca worked with me to create something that was beautiful, unique, and within my budget. Every item in this store is unique and you won't find this stuff anywhere. And I especially love supporting local business that actually value your business! I'll be back. This place is awesome.

I was excited to check out a date shake! However, when I arrived, it was closed. The place looked run down and abandoned. I don't think I'll go out of my way again.

I was curious to stop in to Sphinx after years of driving by- the outside is adorable & I wasn't sure what it was! They are famous for their date shakes- so I tried one. I'm not a huge date person, but it was really good! They've got baskets of dates and other local candies/nuts etc.- so if you need to put together a gift basket, this is a good place to start.

Phyillis was so friendly and informative about the different kinds of dates they sell and the seasons in which they are available. We also ordered two date shakes and loved how thick and rich they were. It's a must have if you stop in. They also sell cactus candy here among other local goods like the goat milk caramels from The Simple Farm. Lots of local goodies here, come take a peek and bring your sweet tooth!

What a find! I've been a fan of Shields in California for*ever* but don't make it out there (off the freeway so far!) when traveling through on my way to LA. I miss those date shakes! So nice to find the Sphinx AND their Arizona hybrid date: The Black Sphinx. Just as wonderful as my favorite, the Medjool, but not as super sweet. Perfect. So many things to look at, all the items are an Arizona thing: Prickly Pear everything and lots of hot sauce. Of course, I had a date shake. Even better than I remembered from Sheilds and it's so much closer to home. You have to pay attention when looking for the Sphinx Date Co. or you'll miss it. Even though it stands out (once you spot it) you have to look (and if you're going south on Scottsdale, you have to do a U-Turn, so be careful!) I sent a couple of pounds of dates to family in California and Washington, the staff there was able to handle it on the spot, they're all dialed in with the carriers, so figuring shipping was fast. Check a few more gifts off my list!

I went in for a birthday gift and was pleasantly surprised! Not only were the prices really good, but the customer service was even better. The saleswoman at the time helped me pick a gift, have me a sample of both a date and a hot sauce, and even wrapped it up nicely. They have a solid selection of date and other dried local fruits along with a selection is hot sauces, teas, desserts, and even wine (the most of the wine was a bit on the pricey side). The shop also was very clean, well lit, and very organized. Every product had a distinct placement and the floor inside was nice. I would definitely stop in again for both gifts and a sweet, not too unhealthy of a snack. Also about 3 days later my friend mentioned how much she enjoyed the dates and asked if I could send her some more. I'm glad they were tasty since I only had that one.

This is a great place for AZ produce such as dates and nuts and cactus fruit. Its a little pricey but quality is superb. They also serve home made shakes. I tried some dates and they were delicious. The two owners are very friendly and helpful.

Found their website from a google search and checked out the products they had online. Ended up calling in to see about getting a local delivery order placed. They didn't answer, but did have an email address on their voicemail. Sent an email with what I was looking at and got a quick response once they were done assisting the in store client. It was not a long wait and they made some great recommendations. I was able to place an order, get it delviered, and it was an amazing experience. Love being able to support a local business and the customer service was great. Thank you!

This is always a MUST GO destination for us when visiting Scottsdale. We first discovered them 4 years ago at the Saturday farmers market. The next year we looked for them, but they were not their. I asked at the information booth, and they gave me the physical address of their store. The dates are so fresh, as they explained, because they don't sit in storage in some mega grocery store before being sold. And these are FRESH, perfectly ripe, and delicious. The store sells other items too, including what looked to be a popular date milkshakel I didnt try it, I want my dates straight up

First, the pics here are up to 8 years old. Update them! I was expecting a lot more date variates. But I guess they're seasonal. The place was ok otherwise. The one lady, maybe the owner, watched us like we're going to steal something. Made us feel very uncomfortable.

I have been buying their jumbo dates for years ! They are the best ! My family & friends love it too & they have been buying them from Sphinx Dates ! They provide the very best quality!

We just love this place. We had them ship Holiday gifts last year for out of state family. The gifts were a big hit. We came in again today and they have us on file so we ordered 2022 Holiday gifts as well. Had a tasty date shake and bought some goodies for ourselves as well. Loved the date samples. These owner's really run a fine store, lots of hospitality and selections. See you again soon.

Quaint shoppe with lots of variety. First time here, didn't realize this used to be a chain. I think it's a gem in the City. I've been to Turkish markets where dates in bulk are also available; I think if you're simply looking for bulk give them a try but if you're looking for something more special, or something to share with friends and family, this is your location. From dates stuffed with nectarines to coconut and chocolate, they've got more options. They've also got cactus jam, honey, salsa and hot sauce, candy, local wines, and our favorite - date shakes! So glad we stopped in! We'll be sharing their info with our family and friends - and next time we'll get a larger shake.

My friends and I had just returned from a road trip to California where we drove through the Palm Springs area and noticed a bunch of signs advertising these famous "Date shakes." My friend loves dates so when we got back to AZ, she searched for where we could get one. I jokingly told her that I bet Scottsdale would have them and sure enough we found this place. They had a good variety of dates, dried fruits, nuts, jams, jellies, and of course the Date shakes. These were essentially pieces of dates mixed into vanilla ice cream. If you like dates and vanilla ice cream, you will love this.

Great place for a date. Seriously. Who knew that dates were so healthy? We sent a few gift boxes to family in the East. Also tried my first date shake, big chunks of chewy dates in a thick vanilla shake. They have a full selection of local hot sauces and wines as well. Even bought some crackers from Hayden Mills. The place is small and easy to miss but really should not be missed as part of Old Town Scottsdale because they have been around a long time. So go have a date.

One of the only locations for Black Sphinx Dates - dates unique to world! Before we went to Arizona I did some research on unique products. I read fascinating stories of how the Black Sphinx Dates were a spontaneous mutation of medjool dates & found only in Arizona. Once plentiful, the groves have been destroyed over the decades. We were thrilled to find this shop. The small Black Sphinx dates are sold Fresh (need to keep them refrigerated)! They're sweet with a unique (to dates) flavor & wet, chewy texture (not pitted so be careful). Once we got home I ordered several boxes to give family, friends & coworkers as a souvenir gift of something from our travels with such a fascinating history. I love that I can write this review from my phone but I love even more the fact that this landmark local shop lives so close to my own home. If you've ever driven north on Scottsdale road just past Thomas, chances are you've glanced in the direction of Sphinx. If you're like me, you think to yourself, "one of these days I really do have to check it out." Well I finally had the chance to visit and I'm just mad I didn't do it sooner. Sphinx doesn't just have dates. In fact, they are a one stop shop for all things local: Tracy Dempsey original toffees and desserts, Spinato's famous pizza sauce, local beers and wines, local honeys and jams, local pastas and oils. You name it, they've got it and they've got it all in this intimidate shop. Now on to the dates. Have you had a date shake? Do yourself a favor and try this one. It is the creamiest most delicious concoction and don't be afraid of dates. They just provide this sweet taste to the shake. The same goes for the date bread. It tastes a little like banana bread and is amazing. They have rows of gift baskets to choose from that include dates and locally made products and you can also put together your own. It takes visiting this shop to really take everything in. A little history behind this small shop. This local place has been around since the early 1950s and has been selling date products to everyone from royalty to famous celebrities to locals and visitors alike. Not only do they have this shop but they also ship worldwide. During my visit, I learned about the history of dates in general in the Valley. I learned that we have a huge date history and that beautiful places like the Royal Palms in fact used to be date orchards. I also learned that the Brophy family were some of the first to plant these date orchards. While Sphinx didn't open until the early 1950's they actually started growing the dates in the 30's and it took that long for the dates to be ready to sell. Now I'm no date expert, but this is just what I learned. I'm a college history major so you can blame my inner history geek coming out!

Cute little shop selling medjool and black sphinx dates in all various forms, as well as other locally produced foods. I stopped by and browsed through the store to find lovely gift baskets, preserves and jellies, bulk dates, chocolate covered dates, and fluffy cloudlike marshmallows (Just to name a few!). I ended up with 1 lb. of black sphinx dates ($11.25), a package of 2 chocolate covered marshmallows with graham cracker ($3.50) and a medium date shake ($4). The dates were perfect- sweet, moist, with a little flaky texture from the outer skin. The date shake was delicious. It was creamy, with a lot of date bits melded into it. Service was friendly and fast. My shake was made in short time, and check out was easy. This is definitely a great place to go for dates and date shakes!

Loved this litte gourmet food shop! Yes, they have local dates . . . but they have so much more! Choices are plenty and you can fill your Santa's pack with endless unique gifts. Although, I have to admit, the first time you come here you have to really be looking for it. It is hard to find . . . especially in the evening. But keep searching . . . . it is well worth your time! Lots of local - Arizona - goodies. And some can only be found right here in the Valley of the Sun. Of course, if you are smart, they will ship them almost anywhere on our planet! You can go to their website - www.sphinxdateco.com - but I recommend that you go into their shop on Scottsdale Road so you can see it all up close . . . and get one of the very helpful shop keepers to give you a tour and some of the history (60 years) of the Sphinx Date Co. This is one little shop that is well worth your time when you are shopping for that perfect gift for Aunt Susie or Cousin Thane or your best friend's mother!

Love this place ... it's been here forever. If you've ever wanted a SERIOUS EDUCATION on the subject of dates, this is the place. From the sugar content, to how long, where, and how to store them, these folks know it all. And then there are the dates themselves ... some so fresh and sweet they can only keep for days ... others will last a month. You'll be glad you came!

Yes if theirs a catagory for best date ranch this is it. I guess its really only competition are date shakes on the i10 to California. If you doubt this place find out how much dates make each year. Big Fan here, Well really My Grandma who lives in Chicago always lets me know to bring dates for here. Don't take my word for it , she tells me this place is the best. Not so easy to find on Scottsdale Rd but keep you eyes open on the right side just before Old Town. The Company has a great catalogue they send out every fall. Pick one up and pass it on.
