Best Indian Restaurants in Austin | Eater Austin

"Another fantastic pan-Indian restaurant, the Tech Ridge Center spot serves up something for everyone. There are numerous meaty entrees thoughtfully sorted by boneless (lamb, chicken) or bone-in (the goat is great), the Apollo fish (a deep-fried spicy fish), and more. There’s also a salty lassi made with black pepper and salt. Takeout orders can be placed online; there are deliveries too; and there are indoor dine-in services." - Nadia Chaudhury

We had Uthappam, roti with a kadai paneer and vegetable fried rice. All 3 items are very nice and spicy. The taste is very authentic to the original recipe in the south side of India. The portions seemed quite a bit less when compared to the other Indian restaurants. The service is very good. We were taken care of by the front desker Sai, he had come to the table every time the food came to check with us the taste and our requirements. Good to have such a kind of interaction so that we had the food in our tastes. Will definitely visit again when we come to San Antonio. We almost eat everything before taking the pictures😀

Google
Quantity wise it’s huge and you can choose spice level which is good. We order Apollo Fish , Gopi manchurian which i felt they used the same sauce didn’t felt any taste difference. Quantity is also big as the price (12-14$ each). We also ordered a Chicken fried rice and a egg Briyani for 2ppl. When we saw the fried rice it was too much a person and ended up sharing because of the big size appetisers, took the egg briyani as to go. Pricey place. Lot of food will go waste or you need to pack them to go. So plan before you order.

Google
The food was average overall. Some dishes, like the mutton biryani and chicken tikka masala, didn’t meet expectations, though the shrimp fried rice was quite good. Starters were decent. The place feels a bit pricey for the quality offered—a mixed experience.

Google
While I rarely give a restaurant one star but the Order from this place was so bad that I had to give it one star. While I wanted to eat spicy thus selected 4 on spice level out of 5 however the dishes only had red chilli. Plz note - I did call the restaurant and they were supposed to call me but I still haven’t heard back from them. I hope it was one off for them but my experience was really bad. Total waste

Spicy – Authentic Indian Cuisine That Lives Up to Its Name We recently tried Spicy and it was absolutely delicious! The flavors were rich, authentic, and made fresh to order based on your preferred heat level (from 1 to 5). I ordered the chicken curry at a level 3, and my boyfriend had the goat saag at a level 2. Even though his was a “milder” option, it still packed quite a punch for him! I managed to finish mine, but in hindsight, a level 2 might have been perfect for me too. The service was just as impressive as the food. Our server was incredibly sweet, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. I also love that they offer a lunch buffet (though it was closed by the time we arrived), which we’ll definitely have to come back and try. Overall, Spicy is a gem for anyone craving authentic Indian food with customizable heat levels. We will definitely be returning!

Google

I have never thought that I would give 1 star rating for 4.5 star Restaurant. Completely upset for the food and atmosphere. I have visited San Antonio with the family and looking at the reviews I found this restaurant for 4.5 star rating with more 5750+ reviews, I thought it is very good and visited it. I have ordered Naan, Roti, Bullet, Paneer Butter Masala and Malai Kofta. I would give 0 star if I had a chance. Naan’s are little hard and I never thought that they would serve Naan as Roti. Please never to look for the reviews and visit here. I’m extremely upset with the Food and Atmosphere. Restaurant is also not super clean. Please never more water here. Please order water bottle.

Google
By a taxi driver information I went to this restaurant, I asked if they serve HALAL, they said yes all HALAL, I I order goat karahi which they asked me how strong spices I like 1 to 5, so I said 2, but when it arrives, look like is above 5, so much spice, they asked me to leave them review on Google, which I said will do. But I want to try one more time so I can have fair comments. Next evening I went and asked for Saag Channa vegetable dish as I saw on the menu, We serve in Lunch Buffet HALAL MEAT, that mean previous night the meat I have was not Halal, which makes me feel upset so I just asked for veg and spices I reduced to 1 out of 1 to 5, which should be almost spiceless, but it was even spicy then previous night. Serving guy is nice and polite, but I don't feel the food specily curry are overspice and look like precooked food, just make hot and serve. Location, setting and staff manners good. About Saag Channa when I received, I swim a lot to find Channa but that is only in photos in menu but in physical, only Saag. Very disappointed to see, that halal is serve only in lunch buffet but staff who was polite, lie to me that all meat halal. Photos attached. Plus I found first night, I was charged btit high, so next day I order Saag Chana with a plain nan(butter less) which is is menu 2 dollar but I was charged 3, it is small amount but look bad when does not match your menu.

Yelp
Came here a few weeks ago with my fiance. I had no trouble finding parking here. Came here expecting to just order a meal but was pleasantly surprised that they were offering a buffet. I was going to order a Tikka Masala at a spice level of Call 911. The buffet allowed me to try lots of different options. Staff was friendly and food was tasty. I will come back for my Tikka Masala at Call 911 another time.

Yelp
I love fried cauliflower and the Gobi 65 has lots of flavor. I like it with a side of red onion and lime .‍ We ordered masala, dosa, which has flavorful potatoes inside and three dipping chutneys. We also ordered chicken korma and the garlic rosemary naan. Please don't forget the mango lassi's on the way out. They got it prepped for you to go. I don't know why I love a soda with curry it highlights the burn. The mango lassi have yogurt and it's so good for my digestion. The service was great. We love the owner, Arjon, he always visits and chats us up. Plenty of comfy booths for our aching bodies and it's nice and cool and dark.

Yelp
I ordered Uber eats. They had a buy one get one free biryani promotion. I also added a kodi vepudu. I only had the biryani so far. It was really good but I was sad the raita didnt have much vegetables in it. It was more like runny yogurt.

Yelp
We enjoyed the buffet for lunch here on a Saturday. The buffet had many options to choose, some I had not tried yet. The Goat curry was especially tasty but fairly spicy. I didn't mind though because it added to the flavor. The paneer masala was delicious as well as the korma. What I loved about the korma is that it wasn't over processed but not chunky either and so incredibly flavorful. The buffet comes with naan bread that they'll bring to you fresh at the table. They lose a star because the buffet did not offer dessert and the chai tea dispenser was almost empty. What I was able to try if the chai tea was very nice. They also lose a star because the women's bathroom was out of soap and paper towels. I would like to come back and try the korma made fresh. The decor was pleasant but the space itself seems like it could use an update. I saw one of the owners give another customer an overview of the food so know that is available if you are not familiar yet with the cuisine. Facilities aside, I would definitely come back for the korma alone.

Yelp
Overall this place gets 2 thumbs up from me! We started with the Chicken Samosas. There was this mint sauce they gave with it that was so yummy we ended taking some home. For dinner we have Chicken Tikka Masala and Aloo Gobi with rice and garlic Naan. The food is so flavorful and pops with spice. It's been a long while since we've had really good Indian Food. The husband and I were both pleased.

Yelp
To start off the service is great! Greeted with a smile ! I'm always nervous about the spice because I can't handle it much anymore and they had a weekend buffet happening so I opted for that so I could try a little of everything. I can never eat much in one sitting but I went ahead and paid the $18 because it was my first time here. I tried a little of everything up there and it was wonderful. Served with warm Naan bread of your choice - I got the Garlic (literally the best I've ever had! ) My daughter went for Level 4 Butter Chicken- (levels are 1-5). She loved it. She said the spice was right on. The serve water in the fancy wine glasses (nice touch lol). The inside is nicely decorated with some wonderful Indian influence music playing. The vibe was wonderful. The cook even came to ask how we were doing. Over all- this will be a place we return too!!

Yelp
Was very dated. Food was cold and unattractive. Not hardly any taste. People were ok, I guess. I would never return
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Food was incredible and portion size was very generous. We very much enjoyed what we ordered and I would order from here again! I was impressed how quickly the food got delivered through yelp.

Yelp
We walked in today party of 3 with a baby in a stroller they were serving buffet at that time. We noticed that place cleaningness was not up to standard but we sat down anyway, we went to go get food and I had just started putting food on my plate and I noticed a cockroach crawling ON MY FOOD I put the plate down gathered my party and left before they even brought the water out. The experience was horrible and that is a serious health concern.
google avatar

Yelp
Disclaimer is always with one's own experience. I hope this succinct review helps. Overall recent experience was ok. Gentleman at the register was nice. Buffet under $20 is appreciated. The good: Lamb part of buffet was ok as a stew Puree lentils were highlight Masala well done Service ok if you like to be left alone, which I do The bad: Everything tasted the same No salad or fresh type of vegetables Floor sticky/slippery A bit dark with little the lighting
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 stars, but rounded up to five. I'm not a San Antonio local; this was walking distance from my hotel. I really enjoyed the food here. I got cut chili mirchi (lvl 5), saag chana (lvl 5), and garlic naan. They do not play with the heat here. Everything was delicious!! The only reason I'm docking half a star was they sent out a saag paneer when I asked for saag chana, so I had to wait a little long for my main dish. Other than that, the food was solid.

Yelp
Recommended by Yelp, it was great!!! I was really impressed by the selection, the fact that they had Dosas, amazing samosas, the dal was a little thinner than I expected, but it came with curried rice and it was so tasty. The tandoor chicken was amazing and very moist. They were out of Bindhi, but they recommended a cauliflower vegetarian alternative, and it was really really good. We had buttered naan and then garlic and rosemary naan, which was so nice! We also tried the lamb Josh.. very nice! Everything was so tasty I forgot to take pictures. I only remembered after I was full and looking at the table and going while it was amazingly tasty this is not a pretty picture. so I will just have to take pictures next time I go they have beautiful pictures on their website. I highly recommend going and if they recommend something to you, I would definitely choose that one.
google avatar

Tae-Young U.

Yelp
Indian food is definitely one of my favorite cuisines, and for the price AND food quality, this is one of the top places in San Antonio. For 3 baskets of naan and unlimited food at a buffet, I paid around $20! There is a vegetarian side and a meat side separated, which is nice for those that have a preference. All the food was packed with spices and so much flavor. The meat was tender and all my friends that I went with were raving about the tandoori chicken. It was one of the best I have ever had and it had so much smoky flavor. The naan was a good size portion and packed with garlic flavor. It was crispy on the outside but very soft and pillowy on the inside. The workers were super attentive and sweet. They even had robots delivering our water and naan to us, which was cool. If you're ever in the area, I would try this place!

Yelp
The food is amazing! Always good customer service when I come. Very clean , calm and smells delicious .

Yelp
Horrible place to eat . Very sticky inside service was horrible . We waited 6 min in front no one showed up to greet , finally I had to ring the bell we ordered halwa puri it was the worst a far as taste . We couldn't even put that in our mouth Our tea we ordered never showed up 3 people in the back kitchen talking no one coming out to help Finally left $10 on the table and just walked out with our eating If you don't know how to make a dish just say it See below how the dish suppose to look

Jordan B.

Yelp
Been here 3 times but can never return. The food is very good and the staff are friendly but each time I have visited there have been cockroaches. I have seen them in the kitchen and in the dining room. I hope they address this issue.
google avatar

Tanmay T.

Yelp
The first thing you will notice when you enter the restaurant is the smiling face of the young boy at the reception. The owner was welcoming too. We went here on a Thursday for lunch buffet. They had plenty of options both in vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. Everything was at the perfect temperature - rassam / sambar (soup) was the warmest I have ever had in a restaurant, which I really liked. The main value add was they offered fresh dosa and garlic /butter naan on the table, which was included in the buffet price.
google avatar

Brianna R.

Yelp
Definitely recommend Spice Indian cuisine! I work in the area and it's a good change from the regular fast food places. They never disappoint with the customer service/quickness in getting my orders. Also the food never disappoints, the restaurant is always clean and they offer a buffet of delicious foods.

Sasha B.

Yelp
PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE, unless you want to give your money to a rude, aggressive, disrespectful owner and wait over an hour for your food just for them to get your order wrong. I wish ZERO STARS was an option because one star is way more than this place deserves. Last night I ordered food to go and was told it would take about 20 mins or so. Multiple times I was told that my food would be ready within 10 minutes, which was simply a lie. I saw multiple customers order after me and receive their food before me as well as large parties get seated, eat, and leave all within the time I was waiting. It took over an hour for me to receive my food. I was not the only one that experienced this, multiple other customers were waiting with me with all of us being fed lies that our food was coming soon. When I finally received my food it was sloppily thrown around in the bag with most everything sideways or upside down. To add insult to injury, when I finally got home to eat my food I found that this place had not given us an entire entree, rice, and had messed up the naan order. I called the place multiple times but they refused to answer. As it was close to closing time I had to wait until the morning to rectify this situation. The next morning I brought back my food and was met by the owner who was extremely rude, aggressive, and disrespectful. He yelled at me and was combative. He refused to refund my food even though he admitted the order was wrong. He took zero responsibility for the mistakes made by his restaurant. He also excused the long wait time I experienced, telling me that if you have to wait 1, 2, or 3 hours then that's just what it is. I have never experienced an owner as rude as this one. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THIS BUSINESS YOUR MONEY. They do not care about their customers.

Yelp
I came here a few months ago, i have never written a review because i don't think it would make a difference on people's opinion. However when i came here i knew that the world had to know how amazing this place is. Not only remarkable service but the food is UNREAL. I would recommend take out because they are remodeling inside, me and my friend didn't know that however and we went inside and it was still a very amazing experience. I cant remember exactly what we got but he got meat and i got chicken and lentil soup. The bread is incredible, i have had Mediterranean food before but this was ‍

Joseph T.

Yelp
Service was awful. I ordered an extra serving of rice with my meal and I had to ask for it 4 times. I didn't receive it until I was leaving. I also had to ask for my drink that I ordered several times before I got it.
google avatar

Mario E.

Yelp
Wow! Must i say, the food was delicious and made quickly. Very friendly staff and no wait. Ordered the garlic nan, tikki chicken curry, and an appetizer. All so delicious. Water came in a bottle but that's okay. Def will come back, and had so much left for left overs it was even better tasting the next day warmed up.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
Food here was excellent. We ordered Butter Chicken, Tikka Masala, Butter Garlic Naan bread and Chicken Tandoori which came out on a sizzling platter. Tikka Masala with rice and Naan bread was so friggin good. Ambiance is very relaxing and service was good. I definitely got the feeling this is family owned. Highly recommended and we definitely want to eat here again.
google avatar

Dorene S.

Yelp
I love ordering from this place. My favorite dish is the mushroom tika masala; it never disappoints. The prices are fair and I like that they offer vegetarian/vegan options. I've dined in once so far and the service was great. "Mr. A" (Anjan) is always pleasant and helpful. I am a repeat customer for as long as I decide to stay in San Antonio.

Antonio G.

Yelp
The food was bland, I had the tiki masala and it was not good by far the worst I've had. Also their rice was plain it tasted like cheap rice. Never again
google avatar

Redha U.

Yelp
spice has moved across the highway from its old home! First things first, staff is the sweetest ever! You should try to talk to Narender, the owner, if you get a chance. He always has a smile on his face. My favorite part about spice is it's buffet style selection. You get to try basically everything that they have. Staff has confirmed that all meat served is Zabiha Halal! I like the spice levels, they're not too spicy but still a lot of flavor! There's also a billiards and small games area in the room attached to the restaurant. If you're looking for a chill hang after, that's where you should go!
google avatar

Angelina W.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place from the service to all the food every dish I tried and I tried every dish. I put a little of each thing on my plate cause I just had to taste it all and everything was flavorful and good some spicy and some not spicy but still all good. Would definitely be coming back and recommend this place a "go to" must!
google avatar

Manuel C.

Yelp
Best Indian food around. I've had in several states and even countries. Quality and speed here are unparalleled. The owner is a stand up guy, and always wants you to have the best experience.
google avatar

DeeAnna S.

Yelp
I spent $60 on an order and the food is not good. The naan is tough. I didn't get the right samosas and they were just sitting in a pile of oil. The chicken korma has very little flavor and is extremely greasy. As someone who loves Indian food and gets it every time she can, this is my worst experience ever.
google avatar

Michael J.

Yelp
We're from Weatherford where there are absolutely no Indian restaurants. Ft Worth has a few but none match Spice. We absolutely loved our meal. We began our meal with the Mixed Vegetable Pakoras. They were on point. A hint of the Indian spices. A little salty. Nice and crispy. For our main course my wife had the Chicken Saag (heat level 2). I had the Chicken Vindaloo (heat level 4). The rice was exactly what we love. The Naan was good. The heat level of our meals was perfect. For dessert my wife had the Rice Kheer and I had the Gulab Jamoon. Both were good. Not exceptional but very tasty. You know it is good Indian cooking when most of the patrons were from India. Even a birthday party going on. The place is as clean. Staff was constantly working to keep it that way. A chore since there were many young children present. We had the chance to talk to the owner. Seems to be a very fine person. Says he has three locations. I almost missed this treat due to some of the reviews. I recommend that you are finite those and go treat yourself.
google avatar

William A.

Yelp
The food was amazing. We ordered the lowest spice level and it was just spicy enough. The goat curry comes in a spicy gravy that is great. I recommend this to anyone.
google avatar

Sassy B.

Yelp
Update: Its not the same as before. I think it's now under new management because even the actual dishes are inconsistent. I was very disappointed in the food quality this time around and I don't expect to go back. No more flavor, less spice.. Not worth my trip anymore. The chicken bryani was not like before and it came in a smaller dish. My husband's butter chicken had 4 chicken nuggets and all sauce. There was thing worth taking home.
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
I was super annoyed with this place. There was only one other party when we walked in and they seemed to be having a good time and enjoying themselves. We were seated and two groups walked in after us. While we were all given menus, the server asked for orders from everyone but us. They even got their food while we were still waiting to order. We almost got up and left since he never came back to take our order, but I stayed yelling "EXCUSE ME, SIR!" and he finally came. He told us he'd be right back but then left our table to help the other table. He attended to everyone but us. When he finally came to us, I told him we were about to leave since it didn't seem like he wanted us there and he just stared at me. It was awkward. We quickly ordered and about 20 min later the food came. Honestly the food wasn't bad and was flavorful but the service was so terrible that I'd never be back and would never recommend anyone else to come here.
google avatar

Donovan T.

Yelp
I am not sure what happened to this place. They moved locations and the food went with it. The food tasted stale. The chutney tasted like it was mixed with a foreign liquid that should not have been in it. The chutney was watery and and not the usual consistency. The fish masala had a similar flavor to the sauces. It just could not even consume it. I have eaten food I didn't enjoy but this meal tasted like it was tainted. Spice's reign for the best Indian food in San Antonio is over.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
The neighborhood looks sketchy but I thought I would check it out. Indian music playing at a good volume. Ordered the mixed Tandoori with a side of nan. I was here early, 11:15 am and was the only customer inside so far. I had expected a buffet per Yelp but it was a menu only situation athe buffet was not open. I was told they may restart a buffet sometime in the future. I ordered a one spice level. I found the food pretty good and think I will try something different from the menu next time.
google avatar

Lauren M.

Yelp
First time here and I'm extremely impressed!! The butter chicken was delicious! Garlic Naan was soo yummy ! The service was wonderful! Very friendly. I will be back again!!
google avatar

Isaac O.

Yelp
Seriously?! Not answering phone calls for to-go order, then when I arrived there (precisely 5pm), there was literally no customer but also no one to take my order. Waited for 30 minutes just for someone to show up and finally placed my to-go order. No customers even showed up until like 5:20pm. The only reason why I waited was bc their butter chicken is the best. After placing my order I waiter another 30 minutes for the food to be prepared. My order wasn't even complex, literally just ordered 1 butter chicken and 1 tandoori chicken. Overall it took one hour just to get my order from this restaurant. Finally brought the food home and got slapped in the face with HALF portion of butter chicken for $12 - This serving use to be full, but now look how little this is! What a rip off! And missing one serving of rice, unbelievable. I have no idea what is happening with the staff here but they better get it together, I hope it's just an outlier, bc I will give them one more chance since their butter chicken is 10/10. It's a shame since the food is really good. Food great (9/10), Service (0/10), Value for your buck (0/10) according to the amount served here.
google avatar

Marissa A.

Yelp
Had dinner here with friends in a Friday. We arrived and was the only ones there for a good hour then more tables started showing up. They start you off with bottle water ( without a choice), on the menu it says $2 but I don't remember if they charged us. Second time eating here, first time was take out about 2 years go from another location they had but this current visit was just okay... The taste of the food was edible but not the best. The garlic naan was really good, but it did take more than 30min to come out.
google avatar

Jordan P.

Yelp
Usually you go to a buffet and everyone rushes and takes all the naan when its first served and your meal gets ruined. Not here. Here you can order different types of fresh naan for free with the buffet. You also get chai tea with the buffet, which is nice too. There is also a good variety of dishes on the buffet.
google avatar

Karrel M.

Yelp
Food made me sleepy & cozy. Waiter was super nice and accommodating, and also gave recommendations. Interior was nice as well.

Sylvia M.

Yelp
It was our first time there and we had great service and were greeted with such a warm and friendly welcome. The buffet was very good. The lamb in the buffet was sooo good and there were so many food options we could not try them all. Everything we had was very good and they have a variety of naan that is included made fresh and brought to each table. We will be back. They are open every day til 2 am. I recommend this place.
google avatar

Phillip M.

Yelp
Not much spice. The paneer is good but the Tika Masala is like tomato soup. Tarka is sooo much better.
google avatar

Johnathan T.

Yelp
We went to this Indian "buffet" restaurant, thinking it would be good. We came around 3:20 near closing time for the buffet. We went inside and there was nobody there. It was a ghost town. The place looked like it had been trashed. There were dirty plates and utensils all over the place. I guess the staff was too lazy to pickup. The food wasn't fresh, the meats were very dry, and it didn't look appetizing. The owner's friend or something was staring me down like a pervert. I was felt so uncomfortable. They didn't have samosas or galbjumun. The tea tasted like piss with brown food coloring added to it. But the only thing that was fresh was the garlic nan. Also, it cost us 50 bucks! What a rip off. Whoever is craving Indian food, do not come here and I don't recommend it.
google avatar

Sean O.

Yelp
Will definitely come back here when we're back to San Anton. Loved it all. Must try this place
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Went during the buffet service. We were greeted at the front and allowed to sit anywhere. I wouldn't say there was anything that stood out. Tables were pretty large but considering it's a buffet it helps. Food was hit or miss. Some of the selections were just heaps of sauce with little to no meat. Chicken was more bone than mean. Rice was hard and dried out. Our sever only came once to drop off our naan and never saw them again.
google avatar

Bo V.

Yelp
I made an order from Uber Eats and the food was really bad. They were recently having a special, buy 1 get 1 on certain orders so I ordered a chicken/rice plate. I think they were trying to unload old food in bulk because they food did not taste fresh. I really enjoy Indian food but this was the worst Indian dish that I've ever tried. I didn't finish my order and just threw it in the garbage.

Joanie G.

Yelp
Great owner very humble. Food is spicy and soooo good. I will definitely go back ! My daughter is very picky and she definitely approves.

Yelp
We are visiting San Antonio from Northern Virginia. We ordered from Spice yesterday. I spoke to Nandu, who was very polite and knowledgeable about their dishes and helped me select the vegan ones. Knowing it is an Indian restaurant, specifically a South Indian one, I repeatedly requested that our entire order be made VERY MILDLY spicy. I was repeatedly assured that the chef would have no trouble adjusting the spiciness level. When we went to pick up the order, it was ready on time. As we looked around, we were impressed by their use of a robot nicknamed "Pluto" to help the server. The ambiance was pleasant and inviting. We did not get to enjoy it for long as we had a take-out order. Here is our experience of the food itself. The four entree dishes we ordered were Chana Masala (not on the menu, but it was noted by Nandu that their menus are outdated and that they can make this dish), Baingan Masala, Bhendi (Okra) Masala, and Saag Aloo. They were ALL SO SPICY that only two of the seven people could eat it, and only one enjoyed it. We had to order another dinner from another restaurant for them. As for the appetizers, the Gobi Manchuria was spicy as well. The Spinach Pakoras were mild but also bland and brought us no joy. Nobody attempted to eat the samosas. I called and spoke to Nandu and gave him this feedback, which he took very gracefully. The entire stack of containers is now in our fridge and may go to the compost unless some brave soul is willing to try it again. Unfortunately, we won't be in town long enough to give them another chance. I hope this review forewarns other diners and helps the restaurant evolve to be mindful of different palates and preferences.
