Best Caribbean and Jamaican Restaurants in Atlanta - Eater Atlanta

"The flavors of curry are spread over plates of goat, mutton and more at this simply appointed cafeteria-style meat-and-three in Norcross. Hit the counter and choose from several options — some of which stay strictly within traditional recipes, and others like the boneless sweet chicken, which lean into the tropical flavors made famous by island chefs. Other standouts here include curried beef, crispy conch fritter platters, and a pulled pork sandwich that incorporates Carolina-style barbecue sauce." - Mike Jordan

If you’re craving amazing Caribbean food, Spice It Up is the place to go! The flavors are bold, authentic, and everything tastes homemade. The jerk chicken was perfectly seasoned, and the sides were just as good—especially the rice and peas. The staff is friendly, and the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming. You can really tell they put love into the food. Highly recommend if you’re in the mood for something delicious and different!

Google
THIS IS MY ABSOLUTE favorite Caribbean spot in all of the Americas. I've been extensively through Caribbean for work. I spent 8 months all over Jamaica alone. I have to say this place is the Pinnacle. I don't know how,but nothing is touching their consistency and taste. Get the Jerk Chicken Philly on Coco bread and see for your self. The wings are the best in Atlanta as well. If this place were in Midtown it would definitely be on the Michelin guide. I stand on this.

This place FELL OFF! This was the most disgusting food I have had in a LONG time. The stew chicken was very salty. I bit into the largest ginger piece known to man. That should’ve never made it to my plate. The gravy did not taste like stew chicken, almost like pot roast. The chicken was hard in certain parts and the skin was rubbery. The sweet chicken was horrible. The chicken was diced up and in some type of syrup. The chicken was very tough and had an extremely odd taste. The sweet and spicy chicken was no better. It was tender, but had an odd taste. I really think all of the chicken was cooked earlier in the week and placed in the fridge if not purchased then reheated and placed in the line the next day. None of it tasted fresh. The macaroni and cheese was nasty. It was bland. The green beans had zero seasoning. I don’t know what is going on at the restaurant, back in 2018 it was amazing. I don’t know if they have new owners or different cooks, but please do not waste your money. I hope I do not get sick from this mess.

Google
I used to live in the area and visited several times food was always good . However I had not been in a couple of years went today to visit food taste awful the rice tasted like Spanish rice out the box and the Curry Chicken tasted like INDIAN curry the seasoning tasted awful and it was dry . I wanted to request a refund but had already drove home which is an hour away so I just won’t visit ever again they need new cook. This is supposed to be CARIBBEAN not Indian /Spanish the seasoning is different . The Mac and cheese was also not cheesy enough and dry as hell . 21 dollars down the drain . Also the cashiers has an attitude problem and not friendly

Google
I ordered a jerk chicken with mac & cheese and jerk rice, first time trying Jamaican food, I’m so glad that I tried it in ATL. The employees and service was very good, Will definitely recommend and eat there again!!

Google
this is my third or fourth time here. while the cost of the food has risen some, the quality remains high. nice selection of Caribbean dishes, from oxtail to various chicken and goat curries. my favorite is jerk Chicken. it was spicey and delicious. I will be back.

Google
Won't be returning. Food is decent but customer service is lacking. One thing I love about curry chicken is the potatoes, so it was to my surprise that they only give you one small potato for your curry chicken order. I politely asked for more potatoes but was told I could only get one🤯 wow! Probably should include that detail on the menu or just cook more potatoes!

It’s extremely hot in there but the food is delicious!! This is going to be my new Jamaican place I go to.

Yelp
I've actually never had brown stew, I usually stick to the go-to jerk chicken, but it looked too charred so I went with brown stew and mixed rice. The flavor was unique, so I'm not sure how it compares to other places. It was good though I prefer a good jerk chicken when I don't want to pay extra for ox tail. :) Surpringly my daughter loved the chicken, and she's not a huge meat fan. So in turn, I'm a fan. Will return to try their jerk and oxtail!

Yelp
The nastiest fakest Jamaican food Literally like dog food -- disgusting The food is not fresh at all And I highly recommend going else where Overprice and nasty

Yelp
I wished I had of listened to the poor reviews but I was fooled by all the 5 star reviews and went anyways. Wasted $30. I got an order of oxtails with rice and peas, cabbage and side of plantains. No spice anywhere in the dish at all! I'm jamaican and love spicy food so I had high expectations. The oxtails was tender but had no flavor, no seasoning, no taste. Didn't like the cabbage either. Ended up throwing the plate away when I got home - it was just soooo dissatisfied. The only good thing was the plantains. Maybe the other dishes are better but I'm from out of town so I won't be returning.

Yelp
Wow, the Oxtail/Peas and Rice is amazing! Tastes great! Spice It Up restaurant has left the best impressions! Hospitable, delicious dishes and beautiful presentation

Yelp
This is DEFINITELY my go to spot when I want FRESH Caribbean food! The drive across town is well worth it for me, the restrooms are always clean and the vibes are always on point! The customer service never misses (being in the customer service industry this is really important to me) and I alway get my food in a timely manner. And if you happen to make it to one of their Friday night sets with live DJ and drink specials you wont be disappointed! 10 out of 10! Chefs Kiss XOXO P.S. I LOVE everything but my fav is the stuffed salmon!

Yelp
I have no idea why this place has less than 4 stars. Yes it's "buffet" style pre-made, but all this food is when it's good. Inexpensive, friendly people and fantastic service. Couldn't ask for more. If I'm near Norcross, I will go out of my to come here. Not fancy, but AWESOME food. Stewed beef is always on point

Yelp
The oxtail and rice and peas was really good! They gave me a lot of oxtail I was more than satisfied. The restaurant was also very pretty with marble floors

Yelp
Perfection. I've been making a concerted effort to get out of my Alpharetta comfort zone and eat my way around the city. I was in the mood for Jamaican and this was the only place open and not ridiculously far. It's in a very unassuming little strip mall and upon entering the interior visually leaves a lot to be desired. It's dark and drab, but honestly that wasn't a bad thing. It has a kind of hole in the wall je ne said quoi which I've now come to associate with legit food. It's buffet style and there aren't menus so you just pick what looks good. I wanted seafood but unfortunately they didn't have any (they serve tilapia but were out. They have a vast number of sides and meats (a lot, there were like 10 different meat entrees from which to choose). I decided on Jerk Chicken Kabob for my meat and Baked Macaroni and Collards for my two sides. Here's the breakdown: Baked Macaroni: As a Southerner I'm a fool about my baked Mac and this was delicious. Flavorful with that perfectly browned top. 5/5 Collards: Really flavorful but I prefer my greens a little more toothsome. 4/5 Jerk Chicken Kabob: A total flavor bomb. Perfectly spicy with some kind of creamy sauce on top that makes it next level. When that sauce mixes with the greens and Mac it makes the perfect bite. Everything came out to $14 and given the portion size that's more than fair. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I definitely expected more the food was very bland.. I thought Caribbean people were in the back cooking ???I don't know what happened cause I felt like I was at my Grandmas house after she found out she had high blood pressure and couldn't use seasoning any more!!! what a waste of my money but you know what they say you win some and you loose some and Betty lost today lol

Ana C.

Yelp
This is by far one of my favorite places when it comes to Caribbean food. The food is so delicious and so flavorful. I was reading the other reviews and was like what in the world are these people talking about. Don't be fooled by these bad comments I guarantee you this place not only has super tasty food but the staff is very kind and polite. The place itself looks amazing and very clean. To top it off they have special nights with great music and drinks too. I would definitely stop by and get a plate if I was you!!

Kahlil P.

Yelp
Top notch Caribbean food! The oxtails are a must have and the salmon is always a hit every Friday.

Yelp
Very good food. I would go there every day if it wasn't so pricey. But the quality of food does make up for the price so I'm not complaining.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Forget about the 1,2,3,4 star's review. They clearly don't know what they're talking about. Like come on. They truly have no taste in there buds. Lol anyways overall this is a nice spot. Food is good as well I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about. And as for the service it's on point to be honest. This is honestly the SPOT to come to after work, or a nice smoking session. 10/10 for this place. All those other reviewers clearly don't know what they're reviewing about. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
Literally the best Caribbean food in all of ATL. Full of flavor and taste. It is always a nice portion served . Food is fresh and doesn't look like it sat out all day. Staff is pleasant and restaurant is kept clean and nice. I don't mind the extra drive as this place is worth it.

Chris R.

Yelp
Fantastic food, wonderful service, and a great vibe. Love this place!! Boneless Jerk Chicken

Yelp
Really good tasty spot. Ordered through DoorDash. I ordered the Hawaiian chicken with rice and peas and macaroni and cheese. First time hearing about this spot. My wife ordered the jerk, chicken peas and where is we cabbage which she said it was also good. I will definitely order here again or Next time we will probably just check out the spot...

Yelp
Great food! The best Caribbean food in north Atlanta so much choices to choose from and it's always fresh. Service is always good the staff is very friendly. The name may have changed since last I've been here but the food is still the same.

Yelp
Food is ok , very large portions. I got the jerk chicken and felt it was way too dry, the jerk rice is good , the cabbage was just cabbage how good could it be?

Nathan G.

Yelp
I live in Nashville, my parents live in Norcross. Every time I am in town, I pick this up. It is the BEST carribean food. Explosion of flavors. And the best collard greens I have ever had. It is the only restaurant I actually crave when I am out of town. Plus, they load you up with a fat plate. Plenty of food.

shanyla s.

Yelp
If you've ever had REAL jamaican food, this place is a bad look. I ordered jerk chicken & it was undercooked with a bad smell. Rice was mushy & the gravy was literally BROTH.... how do y'all have hispanics running a caribbean restaurant ? I asked for jerk sauce & the lady behind the counter looked at me like i was speaking a foreign language.. the place itself, decor etc, beautiful but the food...... 0/10. i'd never go back.

Jason L.

Yelp
Listen. PLEASE LISTEN! Every single one of these low score reviews is 1000% full of BS. 10,000% full of BS. Spice It Up is one of the best restaurants in all of Atlanta as far as flavor goes. Seriously. I've been eating here for almost 20 years and it is as consistent as it gets. Period. Do not let's these weirdos trick you out your blessing! Go get this food!

Yelp
Caribbean food is known for its robust seasoning and flavor and I'm sorry this isn't it. Food is bland like not even the basic of salt or pepper could find it. I've come here once before and the oxtails were mostly grease and thought maybe let me give them another try because maybe it was a bad day for the kitchen staff but nope. Food looks appealing but highly disappointing. If the staff reads this just season the food it will help tremendously
google avatar

Jane D.

Yelp
No flavor for a simpIe breakfast consisting of eggs and bacon. Staff Response was slow even though there's no customers Drinks were decent, lacks flavor but the alcohol was there For a place that's called Spice It Up, it sure doesn't use any. Is there a spice shortage?
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Buffet style so it is a short time to start eating. Stuffed salmon is very good. Tasty plantains. Friendly people.
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
I love this place. Even though I now live in South Atlanta, I still visit here when I'm craving Caribbean food. I get the jerk rice, collards, and island breeze chicken and it NEVER disappoints. I'm the staff is friendly and even when there is a long line they get people in and out.You get a nice amount of food for the price too!

David R.

Yelp
The Jerk Chicken is soooooo good! I always have them put enough gravy on so that it's swimming. Such awesome flavor. Mac-n-cheese can't be beat. Plantains are great. Ordered same dish for ten years. Three restaurant name changes but the cooks/chefs (or at least recipe's) have stayed the same. You will thank yourself for trying this place.
google avatar

Vernon F.

Yelp
I like this place, the food always tastes the same. A portions are large and the service is typically good. They are a little stingy on the gravy but if you ask for more they are good about given extra.
google avatar

Chell B.

Yelp
There is not really much to say about this place it does not taste like Jamacian food but it's okay

Daniel P.

Yelp
Great food and service... They are doing some kind of construction to make it kinda of night spot idk
google avatar

Shelly B.

Yelp
I will spice it up alright because some curry is definitely needed. Here we go! I live for good Caribbean dishes, but this dish of not so hot service need some realll customer rehaul. I was hungry like a lion ready for my hunt. But, I should know better most here seem like the cat dragged them in. Meow? Anywho, the server just couldn't comprehend, staring like a deer in headlights. Let's add in, standing with a serving spoon in tow. Hope they were not going to throw it. Yikes! Soooo clueless about beef patty another customer repeated. Okay, that was enough to click my heels, twirl, throw back hair, andddd exit. Bye Scary Mary!
google avatar

Mihyun P.

Yelp
I don't have a picture it was too late to take one if you know what I mean. Ordered grilled chicken on sticks with some sweet sauce, oxtail , chicken &shrimp. Each meal come with 2 choice of rice, greens, macaroni, plantain. And I got flatbread too it was good. Portions was great! Most chicken dishes is under $10 according to serving counter lady. They offer to pre- taste.

Brianna C.

Yelp
get the ISLAND BREEZE CHICKEN ‍‍‍‍‍ food is so good it'll have you eating the styrofoam plate.
google avatar

Mia V.

Yelp
I have to say deliciousoso! Chefs Kiss. I get the boneless jerk chicken with rice and Mac n cheese. And boy it does not disappoint. I will drive 45min just to get this stuff. Keep doing what you're doing :)

TP J.

Yelp
Portions are much smaller than previous restaurant in this spot. Food not as good. I tried twice. Prices are higher. The gentleman who served me got it wrong twice so I took the wrong one. He didn't apologize, he got angry with ME! Won't be returning.

Alma A.

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars I would. This disappoints me so much because I have years coming here, the previous owners were just fantastic. But now.. the new service they're giving is just sad. Tonight I was just insulted & told "fuck you" by the owner/ owners son. Everything started because the food portion he was giving me was so little than what we always get, and I asked to get the portion we're paying for ( Almost $15 plate) he said that they were cutting down on portions and I had told him that if that was the case than to lower his plate prices. & that's when he staring bumbling & saying a whole bunch of things, that he didn't have to explain himself every time (meaning that this isn't the first time something like this happens) and he insulted me. I left the plates and left & left him talking. I went straight to another Caribbean cuisine. I am never coming back and they've definitely lost some loyal costumers, my whole family used to eat here but not anymore. This is just sad and such a terrible service.

Ikea W.

Yelp
I go here for lunch often. When I tell yall its good, ITS GOOD! I always get the spicy chicken, mac and cheese and fried rice. they give you so much food, I eat the rest for dinner. if you haven't went try them out, you will love it.
