After years and years and years of driving by Original Juans, seeing their products in the grocery store, hearing their sponsorship of various AM sports radio shows, etc, I finally stopped in their warehouse location on Southwest Boulevard last fall. I just so happened to come in on a 99-cent clearance sale day. I left spending over $50 on what can only be considered absolutely amazing sauces, marinades, mixers, and various other flavor-enhancers.
As one shelf at home dedicated to Original Juans products turned into half a cabinet, which then turned into an entire cabinet, I knew I had a problem. Solution? FAMILY GIFT BASKETS. HOLIDAY GIFT BASKETS. BOSS I NEED TO LEAVE 3 HOURS EARLY ON A FRIDAY DUE TO THE 99 CENT CLEARANCE TEXT I JUST GOT, I'LL BRING YOU BACK 10 BOTTLES OF CRAZINESS BASKETS.
I do like Original Juan's branded products, but I will admit, I head exclusively to the clearance section each and every time. The regular pricing of $2.99 on most clearance items, combined with the $2 buy one-get-one free items, makes even the non-99 cent trips a joy. The selection in both the general store-area and clearance is ALWAYS rotating - you quickly learn to stock up on your favorites IMMEDIATELY upon sight because there is no guarantee it will be there again.
Most of our friends who know us as vegetarians give me that puzzled look when I tell them I just bought 30+ bottles of sauce and marinades, but it just takes a quick explanation of how great marinating tofu, mushrooms, brussel sprouts, or any of the other "boring" vegetables we're otherwise stuck with are in these amazing, unique concotions. The prices are so amazingly cheap I don't mind giving out my third or fourth back-up bottle of a particular item for them to try themselves.
In the past year, some of my favorites have included: Tamarind Glaze, Harvest Apple Sauce, Grinders pizza sauce, the meyer lemon simmer sauce, the myriad bbq sauces, the countless exotic choices of piri piri and harissa, wing sauces, moroccan bbq, thai chili ketchup, gourmet mustard (and mustard-based bbq sauces), Oriental glazes, the basil & tomato spaghetti sauce, and hot sauces. We also really appreciate the number of high fructose corn syrup-free sauces!
The only bit of advice I can give is to keep an eye on the born-on date that is featured on most of the labels in the clearance section. You'll recognize a LOT of local places - Pickleman's, Blanc, and quite a few local BBQ places - on the label, and a few thinly-veiled names that allude to some local (usually higher-end) eatery the product is/was intended for. Most items are barely a few weeks old, although it's not entirely out of the question to see a few year+ items lingering about.
Another big plus are the jars these things come in - I love the jerk sauces and steak sauces that come in the glass flask jars, which have to be worth more than the $1 i'm spending on the sauce inside themselves.
Another pro-tip: Sign in with your cell phone# each time in, and every 3rd trip in will net you 25%, which stacks with the 99-cent sale when it's on for super-savings on amazingly creative gourmet flavors!
