I've been eying this place for almost a year now. It's right across the street from the street my client lives on. I saw the 'Grand Opening' sign go up back then, but I kept saying to myself I'd go when I need some spices. Little did I know it's more than that!
Spicy Mart is a packed little (just two rows and a wall of frozen foods) store that sells mostly Indian and Pakistani foods. Foods this unadventurous diner has never heard of. Yes, I know what Paneer Palak is. They carry that, of course. What really caught my eye was the variety of baking ingredients, specifically the variety of flours they have in this tiny place. They have a two pound bag of rice flour for $1.99! I paid double that at my local co-op. They didn't have sweet rice flour though. I'll have to stick to H-Mart for that. They have dosa mix, but I am not really sure how that is different than regular rice flour.
So, I'll start my international dining adventure slowly. I bought a box of frozen uttapam, with chopped onions, peppers and cilantro and chutney. For $1.99 I think it is a worthy investment in culinary exploration.
Spicy Mart is right next to the Fairland Animal Hospital, just past the Exxon (which always has cheaper-than-DC gas prices).
