15 Portland Restaurant and Bar Openings to Know for February | Eater Portland

"The former Beaverton Jim and Patty’s location has been converted into a Spielman; owner Paul Ceserani wrote that, “We didn’t have a lot of time or cash, but we spruced it up with some paint, flooring and tile.” The spot will carry the same menu as other Spielman locations while also offering a couple of Jim & Patty’s favorites (like Pig Newtons and Biscuits – which Spielman is producing anyway)." - Harry Cheadle

Let me start with the bad and then read the rest for the good review. Basically the main problem is that it is very expensive. $11 for a breakfast sandwich is highly overpriced, especially when comparing that you can go basically down the road to Burger King or to a nearby McDonald's and get three to four sandwiches for that same $11. Not that the quality would be the same, but we're just talking about pricing. It's hard to justify spending $11 for a breakfast sandwich. But the food was delicious. I got a bagel sandwich and it was the everything bagel which was nice and delicious. A little bit crispy on the outside. Nice and fluffy on the inside. Really the bagel is superb. My friend got the breakfast bowl and it was very appetizing to look at especially he said he enjoyed it too. Coffee was the same as you'd expect from any local Cafe. I got a 12 oz ice mocha which came out to be about $7 just for that. Again, it's hard to justify those prices, but considering this is a small private owned business and not a chain, it kind of makes sense. I'm not sure if this coffee was truly that much more exceptional than any other fast food place or even like a Starbucks or Dutch Bros which would have been the same price if not cheaper. As you can see from the videos and the pictures, the atmosphere here is nice and friendly. Lots of places to sit and when we came early morning there was no one else so there was no wait time for anything. I don't know that I will be returning simply because it was expensive but as far as quality and taste and maybe a very infrequently rare occasion to stop by say once every 6 months it makes it fine.

We came in to just get an everything bagel with chive to go. It took a bit to get the bagel, but once we got it, it was worth the wait. Im glad that they did open a location on the westside. The interior is pretty spacious as well.

When I lived in Portland, I would frequent several of their locations, but I was so happy to find this closer to home. It’s just as delicious! The inside was very clean and the employees were friendly. I got the “Uncle Sal,” which was a lox bagel sandwich, and it was AMAZING. I was a combination of a few of my favorite things—sourdough, bread (in a bagel form), and smoked salmon! The bagel was stacked perfectly and piled HIGH. I will be coming back.

Google
No need to look further, the best bagels in PDX have expanded to Beaverton! The selection is just as amazing as the SE Division location, but with PIG NEWTONS (Jim & Patty’s Coffee People RIP). Highly recommend the breakfast bagels sandwiches with Lox, and the Water Avenue espresso. I’m so happy 🥲

I popped in during a commute not really knowing what to expect, just wanted some breakfast. I loved the vibes here! Everyone was very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. There was a miscommunication in my coffee order (not a complaint, it happens since we were discussing all the flavors) and the barista noticed and took extra effort to find me and make sure the flavors were correct. They were also able to accommodate my no-pork dietary needs which has been pretty uncommon at most breakfast places I’ve seen in this region. I also loved seeing so much art displayed! If this were my usual route I’d definitely be here more often

Google
I got the Wilamete sandwich (turkey, arugala, mama's hit peppers, garlic spread) on a cheese bagel and would definitely come back for that. The chai was a bit sweet (I prefer a spicier one) but that's just a preference. It is a bit weird seeing the space in mostly black and white after how colorful Jim and Patty's was, but they still serve pig newtons which was a surprise! We also grabbed a half dozen bagels for home. Nice to have a good option for real bagels in Beaverton.

Google
I was excited to learn that Spielman Bagels had opened a shop in the old Jim & Patty's coffee house in Beaverton. Bagels are a staple in my diet and Beaverton lacks much bagel variety. Spielman is true to the NY bagel art form with a very dense doughy inside, leathery outside and a slight sweetness. I found the sourdough taste to be very muted. My family enjoyed a dozen and everyone found them to be refreshing different from the offerings we typically have from Beaverton purveyors. They also offer the elusive pumpernickel bagel.

Google
Such a delicious breakfast bagel!! I added a schmeer to mine and the yolk was perfectly runny/medium. Friendly people working. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place was sooo good that I went twice in one week. I love me a great breakfast sandwich. Both times I got the Egg & Cheddar sandwich. One time with bacon and the other time sausage. The sandwich is filling which is good because for the cost it is a bit on the pricier side. These do take a while to make since it's all fresh. I recommend ordering online and picking up...or just be prepared to wait. Inside is really spacious and a pretty standard set up.

Yelp
Great people and amazing bagels.... Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The Hipster is my favorite.

Yelp
Not really. The bagels are good, but miss crunchiness for sure, and maybe freshness? The price tag is way too high for the bagels they serve and their offering overall. Cure, very large, space, but at the end I find nothing so special here to justify leaving $15 or more lighter. Coffe isn't particularly good either. Better options around

Yelp
Spielman Bagels offers great NY style bagels and good breakfast bagel options. Will visit again.

Yelp
I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to have bagels on the westside! Prior to Spielman's opening (02/24), id either drive out to one of their other locations, or wait (impatiently) for a booth at one of the Farmer's Markets. Walking in, the space is *so* much brighter than when J&P's was here, which was a little shocking, but expected. The stand that had been in the middle of the space is no longer, but this has allowed seating to be spaced out more. My everything bagel with veggie cream cheese was spot on delicious and, as always, hit the spot. They're still working on pulling final details together (like which bagel is which), but otherwise seems to be a smooth opening and I know this will be a popular location.

Yelp
This is one of the best bagel shops in town. My husband and I come here pretty often and it's always a good experience. They're happy to modify our order the way we like it and the food is always great. It can get pretty busy sometimes, but that's the only downside. Overall, we keep coming back because they really do have the best bagels around. My husband loves and raves about their lox bagel, I think it's called Uncle Sal.

Yelp
Such an amazing bagel!! The people were very friendly and chatty, helped me find what I was looking for. The yolk is perfectly cooked, a nice medium. I will definitely be back again!

Yelp
The bagels are kind of tough to me. I tried the jalapeño ones. Not sure it's because they are old or what.

Yelp
Great service! Fast and friendly. The setting is clean. Food is delicious, love the Uncle Sal and all bagels are flavorful and fresh. Love their homemade chai too. Glad they are out here!

Yelp
I stuck my head in at close to closing time today and instead of being shooed out by staff who didn't need a last-minute customer like me harshing their end-of-day vibe, I was welcomed as warmly as if I'd been there first thing in the morning, and there was a solid selection of bagels left to choose from - which was a pleasant surprise, as I was ready to take whatever I could find. The bagel was delicious - properly chewy and *not* the size of a hubcap. Cream cheese was generously apportioned and tasty (I got something fishy-flavored, to my cats' delight) and, as I said, the staff were convivial, despite it being the end of the day. I'm glad to see another casual eating place going in to the old Jim & Patty's cafe spot, and I'll definitely be going back again!

Yelp
I randomly saw this place while dropping off a package at ups, and I'm SO glad I stopped in! The lady recommended that I get a salt and pepper bagel, and it was incredible, I'd never had a bagel so simple yet so flavorful. I got the Willamette: Turkey, arugula, pickled sweet peppers, Swiss, garlic aioli. It was the perfect lunch, great combo of flavors. Definitely worth the stop. My only complaint is that I wish they had more drink options. I'm a Diet Coke girlie, and I didn't see any soda options. I'll definitely back!

Yelp
Perfectly chewy bagels and good variety of spreads and toppings. Great to have this spot in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Just ate here, got the bagels and lox with tomato and onion. $17 after a 15% tip I tipped because she said she would bring it, but instead they left on the counter for me to get. It just was not worth paying $17 and the price gave me sticker shock and I got really very annoyed. Not sure why businesses don't seem to understand money is not prevalent right now. They're giving customers diminished service with huge hikes in price and guilting us into tips. I literally said to myself "fuck this shit" as I was sitting and waiting for my food. Its sad bc if they were a bit more realistic in the price or at least gave me service for the money they would've had a customer for life, instead I will just go elsewhere, shame really!

Yelp
Super convenient to order online and pick up for morning commute! I suspect I will be back :)

Yelp
$15 for a white fish bagel. Fuck it I thought I hadn't had anything to eat. $15 for Lettuce and tomatoes is what I paid for. The whitefish was so barely on there I could see the bottom of the bagel through the whitefish. I ran back and got a refund. In NY $13 would have gotten me a white fish sandwich with white fish three fingers thick. It's a disgrace to Larry David and the fucking audacity to charge $15 for a bagel that had whitefish that could barely fit a tablespoon. Fuck off. Staff was pleasant and polite but the audacity of this fucking company is something else. When I got home I tell my boyfriend the whitefish wasn't even as thick as my pinky he immediately got on me for thinking I was getting anything close to what I would get back home. Fuck these thieves

Yelp
Food, service and ambiance is great, very friendly staff and good place to sit and enjoy your food

Yelp
This is my first time here, and I love it here! Everyone was so so sweet! The environment was fun! The food was amazing I got the egg and cheddar bagel with sausage on an everything bagel and it was delicious!

Yelp
Everything bagel was the real thing, so chewy and flavorful. That being said I was baffled when the staff members didn't understand when I asked if they used "the mother" or was the sourdough just flavoring. Another customer also looked puzzled by the response of , I don't know what that means and suggested the term "starter" then it was , yes we do use starter. But my biggest concern is the total lack of adherence to food safety, specifically watching all the staff as I waited in line. While they were wearing gloves they touched the iPad, put hands in pockets, held the register receipt and food even picked something up off the floor. Never saw gloves changed out. Just because you have gloves on doesn't mean you can touch everything, your face, hair, shoes etc... so I got my bagels to go and toasted them thoroughly. May go back to observe

Yelp
My daughter and I popped in there this past Friday am - got a bacon jam bagel, tuna bagel and one coffee - almost 40 bucks! We both ended up throwing our bagel sandwiches out after one bite. Super disappointing considering the price tag as well!

Yelp
Fantastic traditional bagels, and nice employees. Highly recommended if you like real bagels.
