"Beginning in 2011 as a small father-son coffee roasting operation, Spielman Bagels has expanded to four locations across the city — two on the west side and two on the east. Unlike many bagel shops in Portland, Spielman uses a sourdough starter in its dough to achieve a distinctive West Coast tang, giving the bagels a traditional crisp exterior with a tart-fluffy interior that’s complemented by a swipe of cream cheese. The salt and herb bagel has proven to be a customer favorite." - Daniel Barnett, Brooke Jackson-Glidden, Nathan Williams

"Spielman Bagels & Coffee, co-founded by Rick Spielman, is a popular Portland bagel chain. It started as a small cafe with in-house roasted shade-grown coffee. The bagels, initially made in small batches, became the focus due to their unique "Portland style" made from a sourdough starter and kettle-boiled. The business currently operates four Portland locations and wholesales to over 50 vendors in Portland and Salem." - Janey Wong

Google
This place has the best bagel sandwich I've ever had. I made my own sandwich, wheat everything bagel (they got a full show casing of different bagels) with bacon, avocado, tomato and egg. And a vanilla latte to go with it. As you can see in the picture, they did not hold back with the ingredients. The ambience was nice, with plenty of seats available, as well as some outdoors. Parking was easy to find despite it being part of downtown. Highly recommend!

Google
We love this place. Their breakfast sausage sandwich is the best! Get it on a salt and herb bagel. All the flavors are great, good choice of smears. Friend said staff, can get busy so budget your time.

Google
Egg & Cheese bagel is enormous, lovingly crafted, and so tasty! the eggs are creamy, and may have gone through a sous vide process, no overcooked rubbery eggs here! applewood smoked bacon is flavorful and delicious. the sausage tastes incredibly fresh and herby. the bagels are huge, and so tasty and fresh, nice and chewy texture. the flavors available were really unique too. lattes are great whether cold or hot. cannot recommend enough!!!

Google
First time coming in today, I waited for a little bit to order which is no problem except for they didn’t have blueberry bagels and I wanted to ask the Person up front what they like but by then there was a line behind me and I felt rushed so I ordered a chocolate chip muffin and left. The muffin is not chocolate it’s maybe a raisin and cinnamon or something? The reason for the bad review is I have allergies and food sensitivities! It’s important to know what you’re serving people, and I didn’t get anything I could eat so I went to the coffee shop on the same block, Costellos and had a great experience.

Google
Best bagel shop in Portland! I’m extremely loyal, the Bacon Jam and the Larry David are the best things on the menu. Coffee is good and there is always fun art from local artists for sale too. I’m saving up my reward points for a Spielman tshirt

Jade

Google
I say this with true sadness in my heart, but y'all always mess up my bagel 😭 I love spielmans, but this one location always forgets like half the ingredients in my bagel. I’ll probably keep coming back for convenience reasons, but it would be nice to not have to always check my bagel before I leave. In the last month, I’ve had two friends tell me that their salmon lox bagels were literally made with no salmon. I love this place but I can’t keep defending you guys.

Google
Spielman Bagels and Coffee Roasters is a definite place to stop in and grab a drink. The staff is friendly and welcoming. And whether you choose to sit inside or outside, there is plenty of space to spread out. I ordered an iced coffee with a pump of vanilla and oat milk. It was smooth, rich, and flavorful. If I were hungry, I would have ordered a bagel. They looked delicious. I highly recommend this place!

Google
Best bagels in town. Wish the management treated the staff better. The workers are friendly, kind and pretty great - but it seems like the owners don't invest in their equipment, employees, or the interior design of the space.

Murphy O.

Yelp
I really like the poppyseed bagel with strawberry cream cheese schmear. Yes you can judge me for my bagel order.

Kelly P.

Yelp
Yummy bagels !!!! Super comfortable atmosphere and great service. I don't like cream cheese and I love that they have so many options I can still choose from :)

Ruby C.

Yelp
I can't figure out why Spielman has such a bad rating? Anyway. I've been coming here for a few years when I want to find a spot with vegan options. I do wish there were more options near the end of the day, but that's basically my fault. I love how many local ingredients they use (mama lil peppers for example) AND their chai is my favorite. Which is an unexpected bonus. I love that there's also outdoor seating.

Trish L.

Yelp
I stopped in here just as they were closing. I got a quick latte and bran muffin. Both were tasty and served quickly.

Erin W.

Yelp
Bagels and cream cheese were just meh. Ben and Esther's is definitely way better, but we decided to try Spielman's for the first time today. It's also our last. My husband waited an hour for two bagels with cream cheese. Super slow. The place was packed with people just waiting. Very poor communication among the staff and no one really seemed to care that everyone had to wait so long. I wanted an Everything bagel, but apparently, the owner decided to put to the side the remaining Everything bagels for himself.

Chloe T.

Yelp
I could rave about their bagel sandwiches and chocolate chip cookies all day long but when I tell you DONT order the matcha ... just make one or buy from twisted croissant. Each time I've ordered an oat milk matcha it's either not enough matcha or extremely clumpy :(

Brandon T.

Yelp
Great Bagels. I made a large order for a meeting and they had it ready to go on time!

Maeve H.

Yelp
The staff are super nice, pretty standard bagels in all and I'm not really one to leave reviews but I simply have to warn yall do NOT get the cold brew. No hate but I seriously have never had worse in my life. Not sure what's going on there. But the bagels are perfectly serviceable. Also skip it if you're in any kind of rush for some reason people love to DoorDash from this place (????) so staff are juggling takeout orders of like 10+ bagel sandwiches on top of walkins.

Louis G.

Yelp
I waited more than 20 minutes for a bagel. Finally I just had to leave to get to work on time.

Jana C.

Yelp
The music here is STUPENDOUS!!! I've been singing along to at least 4 songs--- wow. The bagels are not the very best ingested by this carb addict, but the schmear was otherworldly! Bottomless joe for $3.50 during this drizzly morning-- hit the spot. This after perusing the too sweet pastries over yonder, and opted for savoury this morning!

JEFF D.

Yelp
Yikes! Starting with the basic bagel itself- there is a goal for bagels to offer that signature 'chew' but unfortunately these bagels are more of a beef jerky texture. Causes: wrong ingredients; using dry yeast instead of cake yeast; under proofing; oven temp too low! Now the classic open-faced Lox and Cream Cheese Bagel. Don't be chintzy! (See photo) also don't serve decaying tomatoes (yuck)... and build the sandwich with care, make look like something you are proud to serve! Pay attention to the customer's requests! When they ask for 'no balsamic glaze' that usually means that they really don't like balsamic glaze! They probably aren't going to change their mind about it... Overall I could neither recommend this business nor could I call it a bagel shop! Lots of room for improvement... if they care to do so.

Jessie S.

Yelp
I don't see why this place was as packed as it was when the bagels are not that great. The bagels are expensive, dense, brick like and small. Also, maybe a small thing but I wasn't asked if I'd like my bagel toasted and mistakenly assumed they come that way when ordered with cream cheese...nope. I received an expensive and cold brick of a bagel. Highly recommend Henry Higgins on Foster instead or any coffee shop bagel over these.

Barbara D.

Yelp
People! Go for the pumpernickel to eat there with lox or whitefish schemear to and pumpernickel to take home. If you're eating an egg Sammy try the multi grain everything which has great seeds on top, including fennel, if I recall. This is a very serviceable bakery, and is very much deserving of its four stars.

Margaret C.

Yelp
I tried smoked salmon and tuna sandwiches and they were both big portions with plenty of veggies and fish. I loved the option of choosing the locally made cashew cheese! It has much better ingredients than the ones at the store. The service was quick and friendly too! I think it deserves at least 4 stars :)

Yelp
This should come under the heading, "How to buy yourself a bad review for a buck." I am a regular. I always tip. I did not leave a tip this visit because the last time I was in Spielman sold me a day old muffin for the price of a fresh. This trip, after I paid, I watched the counter guy check the register to make sure the charge for my toasted poppy seed with cream cheese went through. He saw that I did not leave a tip. I was the only customer. I walked to the back of the shop. I then watched as the counter guy picked through the entire bin of poppy seed bagels. He picked one up, looked at it, and threw it back in the bin. He did this multiple, maybe half a dozen times. I thought it strange, right? He finally found the bagel he was looking for in the way back close to the bottom. When I got back to my office to eat my toasted poppy seed bagel with cream cheese, I realized what he was looking for....he was not looking for the perfectly shaped bagel. He was not looking for the perfectly toasted bagel. He was not looking for the bagel which would bless my life, or at least my day. He was looking for a poppy seed bagel with no poppy seeds. And, to his credit the counter guy found the only bald, denuded, barren, poppy seedless bagel in the bin! Geeeeez. Talk about petty...and a really stupid way to loose a customer and earn a one star.

Jamie B.

Yelp
been coming here for years, but finally hit our limit. The service is in efficient, they can barely process a line of people. And then you wait at least 20 to 30 minutes for your order. Every single time. Calling in an order is probably the best way to go, but no guarantees that they will get it right. tried ordering online today and it went to the wrong location. The employee there when I asked if she would make my order here, but begrudgingly did it. When I got my Order back home, there was a sharp piece of plastic in it. What is there to say? these people are not incompetent, they are vicious, petty, and mean.

Emma C.

Yelp
Not sure why everyone is hating on Spielmans. Their lox bagel has magic revival abilities and the espresso is solid. Even bought a cool Tshirt here. I go here when I'm sad. Enough said.

Charles S.

Yelp
line out the door, finally got to the register to order, then the clerk shifted to another position before taking my order, the next clerk left me standing there for five minutes before taking my order. bag of chips, a canned beverage, and a simple toasted bagel sandwich with avacado and turkey. that cost $16.00. after about 15 more minutes, I got my order. three people behind me in line had already been served. I started to TRY to eat my sandwich, but it was so stale, it could've been used as a hockey puck. I told the guy who I thought was the manager, and all he had to say was "that's weird " and gave me a blank stare. I threw it in the trash right in front of him. NEVER going back. This was the NE Broadway location.

Taj T.

Yelp
The Pumpernickel on its own, even without cream cheese, would be a 5 star. Paired with the fantastic roasted veggies cream cheese, it would add up to a 10! So why the 3 star? Well, even though the pumpernickel had a fantastic, spiced flavor, I felt it was only half the size of bagels you get on the East Coast for the same price. Also, it wasn't toasted well enough...or at all really. It was more of an issue for the Poppyseed Bagel with Smoky Pepper cream cheese I got, where the flavors couldn't compensate for the lack of toasting. Too dense, too chewy! We wondered whether we'd gotten one of the "day old" bagels they were also selling. The "Smoky Pepper" was not what I was expecting at all. I thought it would be cream cheese with black pepper, but what I got was some rare pieces of something that didn't taste like anything. So it just tasted like regular cream cheese. The "Uncle Sal", their lox bagel sandwich, was pretty great. Especially with the chives cream cheese! A shame their Strawberry Habanero cream cheese ran out, along with a lot of their bagels. We didn't show up too late in the day, 10 am. I'd like to try them, but from my first very average experience, I don't know it would be worth the early morning wake up.

S W.

Yelp
The bagel I had was ok. All the staff had masks on. It creeped me out. Will not go back. Too painful to see that.

Laura P.

Yelp
Stopped in on Saturday morning for bagel sandwiches. I appreciated the various options for veg and non veg alike. I got a salmon and lox with vegan cream cheese on a salt and herb bagel. Enjoyed a hash brown too- nothing to write home about there. I forgot to grab ketchup and it needed it.

Luke W.

Yelp
This is for to go orders and delivery. Consistently get orders incorrect. To go packaging is abysmal and no separation between shmear, bagels, and sandwiches. Bagels for sandwiches always taste like they're day old and they never toast them.

Devin V.

Yelp
My favorite bagels in the city- the chive cream cheese is so good! Blueberry too! Usually do the salt, garlic and blueberry bagels, but they're all good!

Benjamin M.

Yelp
COME FOR THE BAGELS, STAY FOR JONAS. The bagels and coffee are the absolute best, and Jonas always makes us feel at home. Wish I could eat here every dang morning!

Kim Ann T.

Yelp
The bagels are okay but much tougher to bite into and chew than other bagel shops in the area, and definitely not as good as an east coast bagel but it gets the job done.

Connie O.

Yelp
My first time eating here. The people behind the counter were so nice and helpful. It was lovely sitting out front to eat. The downside was the bagel. So Hard!! Can't you make them softer? Who wants to eat such a hard thing? The flavor was good, but.... Oh well, maybe I'll try a muffin next time.

Charlie T.

Yelp
A good place for morning bagels and coffee meetings! I like how the place is spacious and that you can find parking semi easy around the vicinity. The bagels here taste pretty darn good. I usually get the ones with cheese on it...just because... They also have great schmear to go with it. You can get a bakers dozen for $17.00 and half a dozen for $8.50. They also make good breakfast for your office

Michelle M.

Yelp
Walked to this place after it was recommended by my Airbnb hosts. Cornbread honey bagel and a latte. Very friendly staff, great wifi, and nice music.

Kasey K.

Yelp
I was expecting and hoping for more when I decided to visit here. They got my order wrong; I ordered an egg, ham, and cheese bagel, but received an egg and cheese bagel. Not a big deal, but it wasn't even tasty. The bagel did not taste fresh and the egg patty didn't really have any taste. My friend ordered a jalapeno cheddar bagel with cream cheese and expressed the same disappointment in the bagel's texture and taste. It's a bummer because the employees are super nice and friendly! Just wish the bagels tasted better.

Elaine T.

Yelp
I stepped into Spielman early one morning feigning for a bagel with cream cheese but ended up ordering a bacon egg and cheese on a plain bagel. It was the fix I needed. The bagel wasn't over toasted, which I cant stand. And the sandwich reminded me of my youth in New York. Simple and delicious. I ended up going back a day later, I know i was a glut :), and had the same thing with a cup of tea and a perfectly cooked hash brown. Im going to try not to stop by again and just make it at home but there's something about the peaceful morning vibe that seems to call to me. I encourage all to stop by. This bagel shop is definitely worth the trip.

Olga Z.

Yelp
The barista was really inpatient with me despite me being the only person in the shop (maybe had online orders though..) I ordered a matcha latte and it was really poorly made with there being clumps of matcha still in my drink and my cup was bent and had a minor crack that kept leaking. I do like the bagel sandwiches though!

Erin S.

Yelp
Really great little cafe for bagels and coffee! The employees were super helpful and friendly. The coffee is delicious and the bagels disappeared as soon as we brought them home!

Darren G.

Yelp
Great selection of bagels and spreads in a very convenient location. I'd consider this to be one of the better bagels spots in PDX. Also appreciated the friendliness of the workers, given the current societal "customer service" culture in Portland.

Sarah C.

Yelp
Lovely space, great food, good coffee, sweet staff! Street parking only but lots available at most times of day.

Heather S.

Yelp
First time here, just picked up a half dozen bagels. I haven't tried their coffee or prepared foods. Good experience. Good bagels , very fast and friendly service. I ordered ahead and my bagels were ready to go.

David G.

Yelp
Called in the Uncle Sal; lox, cream cheese, onion, tomatoes & cappers. Ordered an everything bagel....think they ran out and substituted with poppy seed.. No nonfat milk for coffee....oh well

Pearl M.

Yelp
Ummmm it's okay? It's warm and cozy on a rainy day like today. Buuuuuuuuuuttt.... Bagel was a 2 out of 10 Strawberry habanero spread was a 1.5 out of 10

Anna D.

Yelp
The bagels themselves are good, but this is the worst Spielman location, unfortunately. Usually a little messy inside, and the menu options are more limited than the Division location. They don't seem that committed to making a good sandwich, like I've gotten multiple bagels with cream cheese where the cream cheese was not spread on the bagel but rather a big chunk was squeezed in between the bagel halves. You never really think about spread technique until it's done poorly, like here. I've gotten the smoked salmon spread at other locations and it's been great, but got it here recently and it was pretty yucky, weird grainy texture so I didn't manage to finish it.

Kelsey K.

Yelp
The bagels themselves were fresh and tasty and they had lots of options ... the service wasn't too bad, just really slow, and one of our sandwiches had cream cheese instead of the hummus we were expecting... still good, just not what I ordered. overall not so bad in any way, tasty bagels, but I probably won't go back...

Rachel M.

Yelp
Came here last week; I was craving a bagel and a nice hot chai latte. They were out of chai lattes and my first go to bagel combination, after only being open for about two hours. I don't know if this is a stocking issue or they were really busy in the first two hours of work? I settled on getting the Uncle Sal and it was very good. Generous portion of lox and not too much schmear, which some places overdo to compensate for lack of lox. All in all, the bagel that I ended up getting was good and I would try Spielman's again if I was in the neighborhood and was hungry for breakfast.

Dawn F.

Yelp
Stopped by on a whim one Sunday around noon and it was ok. The bagels were tasty and all, but the staff appeared to be more interested in interacting with each other. There was no one in line and we waited at the counter to order, while staff members finished their conversations (even after making eye contact). You can get bagels and lox that are just as delicious with better service at other places in PDX. ------Update------ Shelbie (owner?) immediately reached out to me to follow up on my experience and was very kind. She assured me that she would discuss the situation with the staff and I truly appreciated her insight.

Nicolas J.

Yelp
Terrible service and terrible first time experience. Ordered a chicken pesto and asked for a bagel with jalapeño since I saw one left but someone ordered immediately before me. I also ordered a chai tea. After my bagel was made some guy brought in more bagels and had cheddar ones. I asked if I could switch since I only got onion since it was the only decent option and the woman working said no and just handed me my plate. Super rude staff. Short stock inventory. And their unapologetic staff. I'm sorry but I'm spending $10 on a meal you can at least be understanding of the fact I had limited options and was just asking to switch the bagel not cancel my order

Demi T.

Yelp
I get that times are tough right now during this pandemic, but charging $5 for vegan cashew cream cheese and putting the thinnest layer on there is absolutely ridiculous. $5 is already an absurd amount to charge but if it's gotta be that expensive, I think anyone would expect that creamy goodness to be slathered on in a thick delicious layer, not this pathetic little coating. I know other places in town that charge $2 for vegan cream cheese (and regular dairy cream cheese for that matter) and they put a hefty layer on. Spielman your bagels are decent but this is a total rip off. Either give people their money's worth or charge less!

Liz H.

Yelp
always takes too long to get an untoasted bagel-- never understand as it's not busy-- so not going back

Jason C.

Yelp
I stopped by while doing laundry in the area. I liked the space and the broad range of bagel and cream cheese flavors. The staff were so, so friendly and gave the place a great vibe. I loved the artwork on the walls as well. I however didn't really like my everything bagel or the roasted vegetable cream cheese. I generally don't eat very salt things, but I felt the bagel was almost bland and had the consistency of a pretzel. The roasted vegetable cream cheese similarly didn't seem to have much flavor. The coffee was excellent! They had a really rich, herbal roast. Not sure what to make of things as of yet but am open to trying other options in the future.

Mathew K.

Yelp
I'm an East Coast Jew -- I'm always on the hunt for good bagels. This place committed two cardinal bagel sins before I ever tasted the bagel itself: -They use reheated pre-cooked egg pucks rather than eggs that are cooked to order. The place didn't even have a griddle in the front! They were heating up meat and egg pucks in an oven. -They toast their bagels by default. We had to ask them not to. If your bagels are fresh and delicious, they shouldn't be toasted. Toasting a good bagel ruins it. After taking a bite of my sausage, egg, and cheese everything bagel, I realized why they toast their bagels: they just aren't very good. They're cold (like, refrigerated, not room temperature). Too chewy on the outside, mealy and dry on the inside -- it tasted like a day-old rather than something that was fresh from the oven. An all-around disappointment. Two stars for speed -- at least they can make their bagel sandwiches relatively quickly. Portland: bagels can be (and SHOULD be) so much better than this. Say no to egg pucks. Say no to inferior bagel shops. This city deserves a higher caliber of bagel places. We need to boycott places that commit bagel sins - like Spielman - until they change their ways.

Zach G.

Yelp
Terrible service and rude staff. Sad thing is they have good food, but the service is literally that bad.

Jonathan C.

Yelp
Located in the Sullivan Gulch neighborhood of Portland, Spielman offers delicious bagels and high ceilings, with exceptional service along the way. With a spacious atmosphere, Spielman would be a perfect place to get some work done, meet with someone, or simply enjoy a delicious bagel or coffee. The staff here have outstanding service and are eager to serve you. Once I sat down at my table, I noticed that the tables here were not very clean. It was nothing bad enough to give this place a low review, but I still think that they should care more about their cleanliness. However, it would not stop me from going here. Overall, I think Spielman is a fantastic spot for breakfast or to simply enjoy a coffee.

Maia Grace S.

Yelp
there was a food portion of avacado on the open faced bagel that we had post mated to us late morning on a weekday. I got the feeling the restaurant was overwhelmed, like not enough staff. the balsamic drizzle on this open face bagel was a great addition, nice work on that. I expected the bagel to be toasted though, preferably with butter underneath the avocado. expectations were not met, bagel was not toasted and the whole situation was quite dry. it was bearable tho and tasted great compared to the other item we ordered from the menu. the second item was a typical closed (layered) bagel sandwich - typical and classic : egg, cheese, sausage. one of my all time favorite breakfast meals other then a food eggs Bennie made from scratch. this was just awful. inedible. i tried to get it down, then my husband, and after we both failed- so did our dogs. including the obese Bichon frisée who sometimes finds trash an excellent aperitif .... even he couldn't get it down. it was so dry it hurt my throat. the veggie sausauge was so bad. my husband asked "are these real eggs?" some parts were burnt. others not done enough. wtf- who calls this a bagel sandwich and has the ability to look themselves in the mirror!!!? portland... i'm begging you, open up a good bagel place or i'll be forced to! and i desperately don't want to do that. way to much work lol :) just so you know these two bagels cost me over $20. and no, that is. it from post mates charging up the bill- i have an elite membership because food is LYPHE please message me or help me find a food bagel place that is vegetarian friendly. Please portland! i'm a jew, it's urgent!!!! . if you are looking for some good Bagel Sandwiches on a lovely morning in PDX- id suggest... well, your own kitchen i guess. not here though. i regretted my purchase and wish i could be refunded.
