I really wanted to like this place--Multnomah Village could definitely use a solid bagel shop--but my experience here ended up being pretty mediocre.
Service was the first issue. The young man taking orders seemed distracted and uninterested, and mid-order he stopped to deal with someone mentioning they were out of napkins. Instead of finishing our order first, he went to restock them and walked away, leaving us standing there until he returned. Not a great start.
The bagels are kept in metal bins behind the counter, but they're hard to see unless you lean left and right around the register to figure out what's available. The selection seemed pretty standard--nothing unique or exciting.
We ordered a bagel with cream cheese for $5 and added an egg for protein. The egg add-on was $4, bringing the total to $9 for a basic egg-and-cream-cheese bagel. That felt steep for what we got.
When we sat down, the table was dirty, so I ended up wiping crumbs off with one of the napkins they had just put out. The bagel sandwich came out shortly after, and it was nice that they cut it in half since we were sharing.
The bagel itself was okay but honestly pretty boring--felt more like a grocery-store bagel. The cream cheese was fine. The egg, though, looked odd: thick, rubbery, and all yellow, like something you'd see at a fast-food place on an off day. It tasted fine, but the appearance wasn't appealing.
And then there was the trash situation. There wasn't an actual trash can--just a big bag on the floor near the coffee area. I had to touch the bag to get it open, and my hands ended up dirty from other trash that had already been thrown inside. Not ideal.
Between the service issues, the pricing, the cleanliness, and the overall underwhelming food, 3 stars feels fair. I hope they improve, because the Village really could use a great bagel spot.
