The 19 Best Restaurants In San Juan, Puerto Rico 2024

"The reason why you should go to Spiga for breakfast and not lunch is because their pastries will sell out. What’s in the case varies day by day, but you should get at least two of whatever guava pastry is on the menu. This is a small spot with limited seating, so you might need to hang outside for a little or take whatever you get to-go. The chalkboard menu above the tables also changes daily, and typically includes things like quiches, sandwiches, and plates of pasta for lunch. " - adriana silva, tiffany yannetta

We are so pleased we found Spiga for our wedding! We ordered an assortment of their fresh bread and pastries to have on the dinner tables for our guests to snack on, and it was such a perfect touch. They even made fresh rosemary butter that paired beautifully with the bread—it was absolutely delicious. Spiga was so friendly, quick to respond, and made the entire process easy. The bread and pastries were unbelievably fresh and flavorful—our guests couldn’t stop raving about them! Even though I didn’t get many photos, (you can see it staying fresh under the white cloth on the dinner tables) I’ll never forget how amazing everything looked and tasted. I highly recommend providing guests with fresh bread and butter at your wedding—it was such a thoughtful, memorable detail that everyone loved. Thank you, Spiga, for making our day even more special!

Google
This place was so cute and the food was delicious! Definitely not a lot of indoor seating, but the coffee was strong and the sandwiches and salads were amazing. Would definitely go back on our next visit!

Google
Super cute hole in the wall breakfast/coffee joint. The coffee was super good and I loved that if you’re eating in they come to your table to take your order and they have anyone who is taking anything to go wait in line. We ordered the almond bun and chocolate bun and they were to die for. We also got a ham and cheese breakfast sandwich as well as the stratta and it was amazing. The stratta was so yummy. Would definitely come back

Google
Good reviews on Maps brought me here after walking around Old San Juan all day. Was pretty hungry when I got here and scored a seat inside pretty quickly. It's a small place, so that was lucky. The fresh pasta was delicious!!! People seemed to really enjoy the pastries as well. There's also a cute little dog that must belong to the staff. He wanders around the restaurant and may come right up to your table and beg for food. 🤭 I would recommend visiting.

Google
The best breakfast food I have had in a very long time. Everything was absolutely delicious! The sandwiches were so packed with delicious goodness and the stratta was out of this world. Maria was a great hostess, very friendly and efficient.

Google
Nice little breakfast spot within walking distance to the cruise port. Serving good sandwiches, coffee, savory/sweet brioche pastries, and chocolate chip cookies. Fast and Friendly staff.

Google
This is an incredibly charming SMALL establishment for breakfast and lunch. The pastries were next level, and the coffee was delicious. The specials looked amazing for lunch if you’re in the area and looking. Forewarning, not much seating and slightly chaotic ordering process, but it’s well worth it. The staff is lovely and helpful as well.

Google
Definitely stop here for coffee and incredible pastries. All of the sweet pastries were delicious but my favorite was the savory brioche which that day was ham, cheddar, spinach, and onion.

Yelp
Lovely local coffee place that has amazing pastels!! Just a wonderful place to enjoy the morning

Yelp
Easily one of the better places we ate in OSJ. Great place to pop into for breakfast or lunch. Seating is limited. Just sit down and someone will come to take your order. Service was friendly and prompt. We ordered two sandwiches (pastrami & rosemarino). Bread is baked in house. Sandwiches were warm, crispy, well seasoned and delicious. We also split a guava butter brioche which was delightful.

Yelp
A little hole in the wall spot that deserves recognition. I wish I came earlier to have the breakfast sandwich but nonetheless what I ordered was still delicious. Everything is very affordable here and delicious. The coffee was probably the highlight of the dining experience, so creamy and frothy. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and we even had some company from the staffs furry friend named Ollie.

Yelp
Before embarking on a day trip to Old San Juan, I decided to fuel up at Spiga, a charming yet petite establishment tucked away in the bustling downtown area. Despite its small size, the café exudes a cozy charm. However, upon arrival, it became apparent that the café's popularity far outweighed its capacity. With only one waitress hustling to attend to the multitude of customers, the wait time for dining in stretched longer than anticipated. While patience is a virtue, especially in a vibrant area like this, the extended wait dampened the overall experience. The waitress was very friendly and tried her best to make time to chat with regulars and visitors alike (in both English and Spanish). Once seated, I sampled their offerings--a decent cup of coffee accompanied by two pastries. The guava and cheese pastry and the one featuring salmon and cheese. These were pleasant enough, but they didn't quite reach the heights of other pastries I have had in Puerto Rico. They were satisfactory, yet not memorable enough to warrant a special mention. Surprisingly, the highlight of the café wasn't the food or the ambiance; it was their unexpected furry friend. A dog, leisurely making its rounds, greeted each patron with a wag of its tail. Many passersby mistook the friendly canine for a stray, adding a unique twist to the café's atmosphere. In a neighborhood teeming with cafés and eateries, Spiga falls short of standing out. While the coffee is decent and the pastries are passable, the long wait times and lack of exceptional offerings make it difficult to justify a return visit. For those seeking a memorable experience before exploring Old San Juan, consider all of the options available.

Yelp
Spiga was excellent. Super quick for a morning pastry or drink. We got the guava butter and cinnamon orange zest pastries. Both were soft and chewy on the inside and flavored well. The restaurant itself is small but sunny and has a good vibe for the mornings.

Yelp
I had limited time left during my visit to Puerto Rico and Old San Juan was a must. Starting early, I wanted to find the perfect coffee shop, and I did! Spiga was perfect. The interior was exactly what you would imagine as an old world coffee spot. The paintings on the wall and the layout of the upper level kitchen was perfect. The food was amazing. My husband and I enjoyed a relaxing morning before trekking the streets of Old San Juan. Perfect start.

Yelp
I stumbled upon Spiga while walking Old San Juan and have not shut up about it since! When I tell you I have not stopped talking about the pastries lol the guava butter is INSANE. I also had the caprese sandwich on their fresh baked bread and it was so good! I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
The food here is DELICIOUS would definitely recommend. The service is also amazing the people who work here are so inviting and easy to start a conversation with. The atmosphere here is really inviting and comfortable. Not to mention that there is an adorable dog walking around the restaurant looking for pets. Trust me you want to go here!

Zaida L.

Yelp
Wow! The pastries were amazing. The almond pastry was *chef kiss* When I come back to PR--this will be my first stop. No questions.

Yelp
Spiga was an amazing treat we stumbled upon. They had two super nice baristas that made their coffee with love and care. Their ambiance was amazing and really was warm and inviting. We were there to have breakfast and they have an indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating was beautiful and plentiful. Decorated with a large number of fresh healthy plants. We ordered three of their sandwiches which were prepared fresh and were nice and warm once we received them. My son was able to play in the little court yard they had to the side. Would definitely visit again!

Yelp
Yowza! THAT was a good breakfast sandwich. And the egg scramble my wife has was huge (I had to help her out, which tired me out enough that I only ate two pastries - get the guava coconut and smile). Came back another day because, well it's fantastic. Everyone knows it, too: cross your fingers that your timing will get you a table. The staff are pros and are friendlier than I'd expect. This is a remarkable little place.

Yelp
Amazing food! Great coffee. Love how fresh the food is. Locally sourced juices. Small and quaint. Sandwiches were amazing! My husband had the pasta and loved it. Friendly welcoming staff. Very limited seating but most customers were mindful and didn't stay to socialize to allow for others to get tables. They even have the cutest dog that hangs around.
google avatar

Yelp
Such delicious pastries, so so delicious!! We got two pastries, one with guava/coconut and one with cinnamon. Definitely recommend and has such scenic ambiance! Beautiful views outside of the shop of old San Juan and the colorful streets. Service was awesome as well.

Yelp
Great experience. Food was great attentive server. Pastries were fantastic. Hard to find from Yelp's map.

Yelp
My favorite place to start the day in VSJ. Recommend going here if you love fresh bread and coffee. Prices are more than fair and the staff is so friendly. I really love this place and am itching to go back to visit again. Go!

Yelp
Amazing small local spot with delicious pastries!! Must try the guava butter brioche bun, but they are all delicious!

Yelp
I came here after reading Alicia Kennedy's recommendations on her blog. I love this place. It's slightly off the beaten path. Very quaint, neighborly, and personable. We came during breakfast and had the smoked salmon and dill scrambled eggs and then the spinach, feta, and tomato scrambled eggs. Perfect for what we needed today. They also had specials for the day and if we were here longer we would definitely try other things on the menu.

Zachary I.

Yelp
Second try was another mistake. Food is doughnut dough. Get "to go" if you need to try. The service is "wannabe fancy bougie", with plastic utensils and paper plates. (Whatever you do, DONT ASK FOR A METAL FORK) Service attitude is the same "wannabe bougie fancy" . Ambience is OK if you like feeling as though you work there. Not worth the $$$

Yelp
We came to PR to celebrate our honeymoon and we ended our visit right here!! Can you say Amazing!!! We were seated immediately. The place is very small and quaint. Maybe 10 tables at the most , there is some seating outside. The service was quick, chill, and efficient. The coffee was fresh and hot!' The Rosemary Ham and Brie with fig jam was the Jam!! We were feeling adventurous so we added fried egg to our sandwiches. The staff was very chill and on point!! We loved the vibe here. This was my husband's favorite spot in PR!! Furry Babies are welcomed here. It was great talking to the owner . She was very friendly and down to earth with a winning smile!! Oh by the way since I've been home I now order Rosemary Ham from my local deli on my weekly visit!! Love it!!!

Yelp
Excellent. All around. Look no further. I had the caprese and the brioche pudding and a cappuccino. All perfect. The atmosphere as well. And the service 10/10.

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Stopped here for a quick latte and pastry as we walked around Old San Juan. Espresso was fantastic and the pastries hit the spot. We tried the guava butter, the dark chocolate and the cinnamon / orange peel - all of them were great but I liked the cinnamon orange most of all!
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
HAVE THE BRIOCHE. If you get nothing else here, try the brioche. The sandwich was enjoyable, but the brioche stole the show. Wish we could have tried the banana bread or their brunch menu listed on the wall. Staff was super cool too!! Four days later i am still thinking about driving back to old San Juan before i leave to try more of their breads.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh 120% recommend this very small but cute cafe in Old San Juan. Very casual but great vibes. Give you an European / Mediterranean cafe feel. The servers were so busy but also friendly and took care of everyone. Coffee & pastries were good. Lunch menu was small but looked good too.
google avatar

Nisarg G.

Yelp
Small hole in the wall quaint place with so much to offer. In house bakery and such a warm atmosphere and people running the place. You fall for the place instantly. We ordered scrambled eggs with feta, tomato and spinach and fettuccine with a cappuccino and latte. Everything was done perfectly. Fettuccine was probably the best I have ever eaten. Feta cheese and bread were all super fresh. The dessert options are a plenty and we recommend the cookie, banana bread and dark chocolate brioche Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Spiga recommended by locals friends and family had to try is and must say that it meet all my expectations, very cute little (hoke on the wall) bakery / restaurant in the heart of old San Juan PR Great service amazing food fresh bakes and great coffee must try their bakes i believe the kitchen closes around 3:00 pm so be there early !!!

Yelp
This place is a must in Old San Juan. All the bread and pastries are made fresh on the top level of the restaurant. That being said, I would have paid for just a plain loaf of it were an option, that is how amazing it was! Fig, prosciutto, and brie sandwich: this was my favorite we ordered. There was a good balance of all the ingredients. There was honey drizzled within the sandwich that soaked into the toasted bread and made it so delicious. I wish I could eat these every single day. Caprese sandwich: this sandwich was pretty good. The prosciutto was greatly overwhelmed by the large chick of mozzarella. I personally thought there could have been more added as well as more sauce. Italian sausage fettuccine: this was a daily special. The pasta was made fresh in the morning as was the sauce and everything else. It was absolutely a hit. The sausage complemented the simple sauce perfectly and the noodles were cooked Al dente.
google avatar

Jassmine G.

Yelp
5/5 this place is just amazing!! I wanted to go here every day when I discovered it but they are closed weekends. They have running specials everyday so you can always try something different which I love. Good price, amazing service and aesthetic ambiance. Highly recommend.

Yelp
A cute cafe in San Juan! They serve up all the cafe vibes and hit all the marks. They're known for their sourdough bread which they make in house. The cafe is small, just around 4 tables inside and 2 tables outside. The service is a bit slow too with just one lady taking care of everything and all the pick up orders as well. Other than that we loved the vibes and the food. The sandwiches were delicious and we also tried a bakba which is made with dark chocolate and definitely satisfied my sweet tooth cravings!
google avatar

Angela Q.

Yelp
Omg really really good sourdough!! Highly recommend the any sandwich with pesto, mozzarella, ham or any combination of the above. We had that and smoke salmon one - not that the salmon one is not good it's delicious, but sourdough just goes so well with pesto mozzarella... We stopped here for lunch before hiking up to the castle. Small but cozy, air conditioned! They also have pasta
google avatar

Christine E.

Yelp
I rarely give out five stars but Spiga deserves every.single.one. It's a small restaurant, with a small menu. Everything was fresh and delicious. We tried the prosciutto Brie sandwich, primavera pasta (amazing), Caribbean cherry juice, passion fruit mimosa, and a cortado. It was all amazing but the pasta will haunt my food dreams forever.
google avatar

Roni B.

Yelp
Small space with delicious food and amazing cappuccinos. Highly recommend the coffee and pastries as well
google avatar

Francia F.

Yelp
This was a cute brunch spot in OSJ right next to the Banco Popular. We came for the great reviews and will be adding to the list of 5 star reviews. The space indoors is quaint but we came around 11:30 for lunch and were seated immediately. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food isn't trying to be Puerto Rican but it's a nice place for sandwiches and salads. We got the caprese sandwhich, fig/Brie sandwhich, and spinach salad. All were made with generous portions and the bread was made behind the counter. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite to eat!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing food and coffee - ordered americanos and the special of the day - zucchini and sourdough frittata. So delicious and service was friendly and fast.

Evelyn K.

Yelp
One of the best spots we tried in the area. Amazing pastries and breakfast sandwich. Really fast service and cozy welcoming atmosphere. Totally recommend!

Akanksha ..

Yelp
Came to this cafe since it's highly rated but we had a mediocre experience. ordered it ham croissant and they served it cold so we had to send it back to get it warmed. then we ordered a pasta and they served it to us lukewarm. The pasta also tasted bland and slightly on the sweet side which didn't help. I tried powering through it but the colder it got the more tasteless it was. Half way through the meal I asked if they could warm it up and they declined. the only saving grace was the passion fruit juice they served
google avatar

Eva L.

Yelp
Amazing spot for breakfast + lunch!! Make sure to keep an eye out for Katia's dog chilling outside :). Home made sourdough bread, home made pasta (lunch), and other delish baked goods.
google avatar

Laura D.

Yelp
Great sandwich. Got fig, Brie and ham! Mocha great! Nice small place. Cute black dog Ollie!
google avatar

Sidney S.

Yelp
Great salads and sandwiches! We tried all of the salads and loved them. Make sure to get there early because they do sell out of bread and maybe pastries. It is a small restaurant so don't bring a group of more than 4 or expect to wait a little bit. The service was great and the owner is my new idol. Great way to celebrate women's herstory month, female owned business!
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
I'm a coffee snob and was a bit surprised to find one of may favorite cappuccinos of all time here. Staff great. Food great. Location is tiny and busy but "the juice is worth the squeeze!"

Kobe B.

Yelp
This place is Amazing! We came in a party of 3 and was seated immediately, The host was excellent she did a great job recommending several different items to us. I ordered the Ham and Cheese sandwich with house made Sourdough absolutely mouth watering 5/5 will be coming back when in town again.
google avatar

Amy V.

Yelp
A hidden spot for delicious pastries and sandwiches. You know it's good because people who work in VSJ are in here getting stuff! The brioche buns are delicious and the sandwiches are served on fresh crusty bread. Coffee is good too! It does get busy and there is just one waiter but each time I was in there he was moving as fast as he could! So if it's a bit slow it's not for lack of trying. There isn't a lot of seating, so get there early or be prepared to take some to go.
google avatar

Faye S.

Yelp
If you haven't had the prosciutto caprese you have not lived. Delicious and on house made sourdough.. my god

Yelp
If you like homemade baked goods, delicious sandwiches, and small local businesses, this is the place. In a world of hyper-commercialized breakfast/brunch places, it is so refreshing to find a local eatery that focuses on the quality of the food rather than fancy decorations or pricy mimosas. Here, you will find the simplest food, yet there is hardly any place across the United States where I could find better breakfast sandwiches, banana bread, or chocolate rolls. Spiga makes its sourdough from scratch and it just tastes better than all the commercially sourced garbage that is used by 99% of those "hip" brunch places. The chefs here have really perfected the art of working these seemingly simple ingredients, and that is reflected in everything they touch. The quality of the food is matched with the easygoing vibe. We came on a quiet Monday morning and was greeted by the super friendly and welcoming shop owner. We could feel the breeze coming through the open panels that is surrounded by the aroma of fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls. On the right side of wall was a painting of an old Italian comedian that was perfected by a local artist down the street. A couple of locals were sitting outside and simply living their best lives. An adorable dog wandered in and out, at one point poking his/her head above our table to greet us. It is just such a wholesome picture. We were glad and sad at the same time that this was the last meal we had in San Juan. We would make sure to visit again the next time we came to the island. It would be a shame if this place closes down, so please consider supporting local businesses like Spiga.

Chelsea L.

Yelp
I cannot say enough about this place! The service was so friendly and accommodating, the spot is small with 6 tables of 2 that could be pushed together! The food came out fast, we got a ham egg and cheese sandwich and a bacon onion and goat cheese strata! It was amazing! So flavorful! Don't leave without a guava butter pastry! If your close this place is a must try!
google avatar

Alyssa W.

Yelp
Breakfast sandwiches were amazing! Other good looked amazing too. Will have to come back. The coffee was good too. Cute, small space inside with tables and two additional outdoor small tables. Servers were busy, but very personable.
google avatar

Aaron H.

Yelp
This place is easy to miss, but it would be your loss! Spiga is the total package! Tucked in a little place off a corner in Viejo San Juan, is this gem of a restaurant. They have creatively transformed their tiny space in a fully functional kitchen, complete with a bakers loft (I assume) and a small dine-in area. The have a fantastic team and are as friendly and personable, as they are quick and efficient! The food is creative and delicious! There are a lot of great restaurants in Old San Juan, especially for breakfast and Spiga is near the top of my list!

Kirk N.

Yelp
Best lunch that we have had on the island here in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. All freshly made to order Paninis and pastas. The pasta was amazing. Hand made pasta with smoked salmon is a delight. Fresh Expresso was on point. Excellent service as well. Accommodated our dietary needs, and the food was amazing. Would definitely recommend this spot. We bought a sourdough loaf to go as well.
google avatar

Caty S.

Yelp
Wow... WOW. Wanted an authentic bakery that had flavor and the islands signature ham & cheese dish. This place is incredible. We got the daily pastry that had Ham, cheese and pesto rolled up into a bun. You could taste every layer. We also got the ham & fig breakfast sourdough sandwich! Also really good but I loved the bun more :) support this place!

Yelp
I need to spend more time in San Juan, the day was not enough, and when I return, I will likely return here quite specifically. As are many places in so crowded a city, Spiga is a small spot, nestled in between other businesses on the street, but they've made good use of their space. The cafe has a pleasantly modern-but-casual feel to it, of quality without the anxiety of fanciness [though I do love fancy]. I spent a good long moment examining the brunch menu on the wall before realizing [alas] that it wasn't a brunch day, but everything on the standard menu is similarly delicious, so it's hard to be too disappointed. Ultimately , I ordered the toasted brie and fig jam sandwich, which comes on crusty, in-house sourdough bread, and a mimosa because I was on vacation. Mimosas, of course, are difficult to get wrong, and the bread elevated a flavour pairing of which I am already terribly fond to a whole new level. There's just nothing like good sourdough. Sadly, I ate alone and can offer little insight to the other offerings, but i can say that everyone else eating there that morning looked perfectly pleased with their own choices, so I doubt you can really go wrong.
