Best Breweries in Houston | Eater Houston

"Best known for its hazy, unfiltered IPAs like Houston Haze, Spindletap has built a reputation among hop lovers. But even non-hop heads will find plenty to enjoy, such as the Calavera 2.0 Mexican Lager, Czech pilsners, canned cocktails, and mocktails. SpindlePark, the brewery’s sports and entertainment complex, makes this the ideal spot to gather with friends and family. Enjoy a pint and take advantage of the several sports options: play a round on the miniature golf course, challenge a friend to a game of Horse, or test your pickleball skills on the courts." - Brianna Griff

21 Essential Breweries in Houston

"Spindletap is known for its extensive line of cloudy, unfiltered IPAs, like the Houston Haze, but have plenty of options for non-hop heads, including its award-winning honey ale, Honey Hole, and Black Gold, a Nitro coffee imperial stout. After working up an appetite following a beer-fueled game of putt-putt golf or kickball on-site, try the wood-fired pizza." - Sean Hekmat, Brittany Britto Garley, Megha McSwain

Ambiance: Fun, large brewery with an indoor and outdoor space and TONS of activities from indoor arcade games to outdoor mini golf, pickleball, and more. This is the perfect spot for friends, kids, dogs, and families celebrating everything from birthdays to a simple Thursday night happy hour. Great brewery for a meetup, fun Saturday with friends, or hanging out. Patio/outdoor space is giant with lots of seating options. We loved the decor and game options. Expansive beer selection, including a few wine and non-beer options. We loved the music playing (Creed and Nickleback while we were there!) Clean bathrooms, onsite parking. Overall just a really fun brewery!

Great space to have a beer or two and relax. Their selection is extensive and I'd recommend trying a couple of flights to try a little of everything. Barkeeps are always friendly and there's usually a food truck. Now that the weather is warming up, we'll probably hang out inside, but Their outdoor space is also great for lounging.

Google
Nice venue to grab a drink with a good selection of beers to choose from. They have a indoor seating and a large outdoor pavilion with picnic tables in the shade, so it's a good place for a large group. There's plenty of activities to keep the kiddos busy, including basketball court, and a large lawn to play soccer. We went on a Saturday morning and the food trailers were not open yet, so we needed to make lunch plans elsewhere, but we all enjoyed our time there.

Recently attended my 3rd Beauty Boost event hosted by Spindle Tap Brewing & and they are just the nicest most accommodating people! Part of the event was outside under one of their two covered areas. The rest of the event was in the brew room which was so cool! Cold beer, good food, amazing people & wonderful environment…. What’s not love! Can’t wait to go back!

Google
A great experience! The staff, food, and whole experience were amazing! The bartender was very friendly, made great recommendations, and overall, we had a great chat with him. The rose cider I ordered was the perfect mix of rose flavor with the crispness of cider. The thai burger I ordered with the truffle fries and o my goodness what the burger one of the best things I have ever had. Sweet, salty, spicy and tangy, all the things you look forward to but between buns. The truffle fried where also very delicious but after starting our meals we realized quickly it was a lot of food! Looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu!

Google
SpindleTap was an excellent host for our industry networking event. The semi-private space was fantastic. The Brewery was clean and a fun environment. The best experience was the people! From event planning to service, the Spindletap team is top notch. Definitely recommend.

We had our End of the Year celebration here for staff. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. The drinks were good, and the food truck was good as well. Lots of our staff stayed after our celebration was over because the vibe was on point!! Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
Fun for a group! Attended a retirement party in the back area where the brewing tanks are kept. Lots of picnic tables and benches for seating. The temperature was a little warm but was cooler in the main area where you order along with more seating. The beer menu is fairly large and I was undecided on what to order. The cashier was super helpful asking me what I like and gave me a couple of samples. Great selection and something for everyone's tastes. Their menu is available at https://untappd.com/v/spindletap-brewery/3846827 They do not serve food but have food trucks on site. We had pizza during our visit.

Yelp
Very good variety of IPAs. They have inside and outside seating... some putt-putt golf, basketball and corn hole if you want to be active while doing some fine beers. Plenty of parking.

Steve F.

Yelp
Great beer and great environment! They have pickleball and basketball outside as well as a large covered patio area. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Fantastic! This was probably our favorite place that we went to while visiting Houston. The brewery is quite large and has tons of seating, which is always great to see. Their beer was quite good and we enjoyed their IPAs (took some home too!). They have a pizza truck on site (Texzas) and the pizza was very tasty; it paired well with the beer. They also have surprisingly good coffee and we bought some to take home, which was fun. Swag section was great as well and I love my "This is Spindletap" shirt. It's a great place all around!

Yelp
Vibe- This brewery is an entire vibe! There's an inside with plenty of tables to sit at and outside there's a covered area with 6 tables you can reserve, a huge space with games, and also a food truck. Customer service- Great! Food/drinks- I had the triple berry juices up hard seltzer while I was there and it was sweet enough for me to have 2. Parking- There's about 40 parking spots right by the brewery and then there's a lot next to their lot with the a few more spots.

Courtney M.

Yelp
Definitely don't go on a date because the lights are so bright inside that it feels like the afternoon. Also, they have very limited food options. Their hard seltzer was the best I've ever had though!
google avatar

Hillary E.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the variety of beer offered. I did a flight of beers, which included (5) 5 oz. pours. My favorite of the day was the Houston Hustle, a juice IPA. Plenty of seating inside and out; a lot of parking available on a Sunday.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing supportive staff for events with fantastic brews! We had two amazing events at Spindletap and appreciate their partnership and support! Such a welcoming crew!

Yelp
Great beer, even better staff, awesome atmosphere! Lots of variety, plenty of things to do, delicious food truck on site

Yelp
here at the moment... positives- nice and clean place i didn't feel rushed it order plenty of seating area outside and inside you can see your vehicle when you are sitting inside neat food trucks to order food from nice vibe negative they were out of pretzels and not a lot options today during the texas games and not a lot of options for non beer drinkers but hey it was a beer brewery and would have liked it to be a little more lively
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
On a beautiful day, there's no better place to be outside if you're a craft beer lover. Plenty of shade and lots of things to keep the kids busy - disc golf, basketball, mini golf, corn hole, and badminton. I prefer to go on days when they don't have events but that means no food. Check their FB page as they update it daily. Bar service only and they've got beer to go.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
First visit was the pints and punks show and it was fun. The brew ice cold , fresh and a welcomed choice in the texas heat. The show was well organized and the sound was great. The staff extremely knowledgeable and friendly. Will watch for shows at this venue, one of the smoothest performances I've seen in a long time.

Yelp
Love the beer, LOVED the actually brewery! It was super busy when we stopped by on a summer Sunday, with a wedding out front, 2 parties inside, and lots of folks gathered near the activity area. We had our pup with us, who was a bit warm after a previous brewery hop to
google avatar

Christy W.

Yelp
Hip hop music playing and nice selections of brews! Covered areas outside with lots of games and things to do. Ask for the balls they even have a little putt putt course. A fun little outting but will come back when it's not 100 degrees outside!
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't try the food but they had a lot of beer. Went when they had a micro wresting event out in the yard.
google avatar

Yelp
This is actually my favorite brewery. So I was bummed when I was told last week that they did not accept Apple Pay.

Yelp
Wonderful brewery located a little north of Houston. I stopped by just before closing on a Saturday night (I didn't know their hours!). It is a little tricky to find because it is down a dark desolate road. They readily welcomed me in for a beer instead of turning me away. Amazing staff that made me feel like a local as soon as I walked in the door. I wish I could remember their names, but they were 3 lovely ladies with badass beer recommendations! Due to my timing, I was the only person in the front of the brewery. There was a big birthday party going on in their back room but they didn't rush any of these patrons out either. I ordered a DIPA and they offered me some samples of their other drafts. Everything was absolutely delicious! I wish I could go back there right now and have a beer with the staff! Excellent experience and I will make sure to stop by next time I am in town!

GC S.

Yelp
Great setting, great service, great beer, very family-centered place. Even has pickle ball courts...

Yelp
Great hang out place , service was good, food truck food was good, great place to spend with family and friends

Yelp
Great place, vibes, food and beer! Come alone, with family or as a group! Lots of stuff to do
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
This place is quite far out for me so I was disappointed when I found out you couldn't do flights :( Dog friendly. Lots and lots of seating indoors and out. They had a pizza food truck (that I did not try). Unfortunately because of the no flights protocol I only had two beers. One was pretty good! The other wasn't bad. And the one I really wanted was sold out. Sad. It's definitely a fun place to go check out with a group of friends or to watch the Astros play. I think they had 10 beers on tap and a bunch more in cans.

Yelp
Didn't think I would be doing a 3 star review for Spindletap but here it is. I've been to the brewery a few times and enjoyed myself. They have a nice outdoor area and a well done taproom. Spindletap also specializes in the beers I prefer lately. The hazy NEIPA style that they make is excellent and I've enjoyed a few of their stouts and lagers as well. Then why the 3 stars u ask? A friend of mine recently went to Houston to stock up on beers from the various breweries we like, Spindletap being at the top of the list. He brought me back a case of four packs of some beers I've had at the brewery and a couple of others I haven't. This was the last week of August. A couple of weeks later I crack open a can of 'One Love' DIPA and as I'm pouring it, it doesn't look right. I've had this at the brewery more than once. Came out of the can more of a dirty yellow than the brighter color u get coming out of the tap. Tasted it and it was clearly old beer. Checked the date on the can and it was from freakin' February! Sold in August! This is disgusting coming from the brewery. I've asked a couple of the breweries around here that make a similar style of beer and they both said they would NEVER sell cans of the hazy DIPA's that were that old. I can see maybe getting it that old at HEB or Kroger, but NEVER at the brewery. Thus the 3 stars. Pissed that I wasted that much money on old beer. The other 4pks were of similar age as well. I'll still go to the brewery when I'm in town, but I DEF won't be buying old beer from them again.
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
Wow, where do I start? On the top beer scale, I always compare to Colorado's best breweries. This gem in Northern Houston meets that criteria. If you are a fan of IPAs, this might be Texas' Juicy and Hazy Beer Heaven. Aside from the beers, the brewery also features a putt putt golf course, food trick, music stage, courtyard and more. This brewery is worth the 20 minute drive from Minute Maid Park.
google avatar

Paul Z.

Yelp
Best brewery in Houston IMO. Friendly staff, unbelievable selection of on tap brews, usually at least 8-10 IPA options which is incredible, and they also sell roast coffee beans! I wish they had a more predictable rotation of food trucks as it can be spotty for that, but the beer is the main point and it never disappoints!
google avatar

Felicia G.

Yelp
Spindletap is a nice brewery and the staff are very nice. They only have a limited selection of beer on tap compared to other local breweries. It's very spacious and definitely can accommodate a large crowd. They are pet and kid friendly. The facility is clean and very relaxing. They have a food truck parked on the side that's serves pricy pizza. Only con is the outside seating is in parking lot next to the building and parking is limited.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Had my 40th birthday on Memorial Day weekend. I strongly recommend using them for any celebrations.
google avatar

JJ S.

Yelp
Never been here before but I'd heard great things about it. The place is somewhat far but the beer makes it worth the trip. Nice selection onsite though for some odd reason (I've encountered this across other places in Houston before) you get there an their selection was only 8 beers. Anyhow I loved the Honey Hole and Hopkeem but are really nice and refreshing for a hot humid day in Texas. They offer a food truck with firewood pizzas - I got there at 2pm and the attendant said oh we're closed because of a parade earlier today. Not exactly very welcoming and food must always be offered specially in a brewery. Perhaps they needs to have a catering company come out and provide them with food on Sundays.

Yelp
We decided to venture to some breweries outside of the Loop, and Spindletap was the first one on our list. We ordered two flights, which allowed us to try eight of their nine beers on tap. Their Draped Up was my favorite of all eight. Some of their beers are pretty solid, and others just tasted off to me. I also didn't dig the vibe of the brewery. Indoors felt kind of sterile, and the outdoor seating is off the parking lot next to their permanent food truck. It was fine, but it does feel like you're sitting in a parking lot. Now that we've visited once, I will still drink their beer, but I don't feel the need for a return visit.
google avatar

Christy P.

Yelp
Spindletap isn't my favorite brewery, but it is the favorite brewery around for IPA drinkers (which I don't personally drink). As a lighter beer drinker, they only have the boomtown blonde (blonde ale) and honey hole (ESB) that are drinkable for me. I came for their 3 year anniversary party, and this place was packed. They were pretty limited with food. There was over an hour wait for pizza from their food truck Texzas. The crust was a little too crunchy (lots of overcooked spots), but the toppings were good on the OG and lil Margaret. They were a bit pricey though, running about $14 for a ten inch pizza. If you're hungry though, it's prob worth eating here--but I'm guessing outside food is permitted. Overall I would check it out if you're into IPAs, because I've seen nothing but love for them.

Yelp
Love the Brewery and Chili cook off Friki Tiki cookers. Representing in Roatan. Loved the the "Love Fest". Bob and Rose

Yelp
I LOVED my first experience at Spindletap! Aside from a few minor cons, this is a great brewery, and I'd love to go back! Pros: 1. SOOO much space - tables outsides, tons of tables inside...definitely a brewery where you can invite a big group! 2. Great beers - although almost all of them were on the hoppy side (works for me, but not my fiance or our friend). Yesterday, they had five of their beers on draft - a Blonde, an ESB, a pale ale, an IPA and a double IPA. 3. Great prices! I had a flight of all five beers on draft for only $8! 4. Great merchandise! For $15, you get one of their very cool beer glasses and three tokens! We loved the glasses so much (they set the full set of four for less than $15 and they're all different) that we bought two for $30 and six tokens! 5. Great service - the people that work there are really friendly and kept coming by to check on us (and check in on who was winning our epic Risk game). 6. They have a couple of games, but they're really cool with you bringing your own! We hung out for about four hours, drinking beer, playing games, and trying out their food! 7. They have food options - there were a couple of food vendors there, and Spindletap has its own food station outside where they cook up a couple of options. My fiance and his friend enjoyed the Wagyu beef burgers. 8. Clean bathrooms. 9. You can see right into the brewing facility through the glass. 10. A lot of parking! Cons? 1. I wish they had one or two vegetarian or pescatarian options. As it was, the only thing for me to eat was the pretzel and mustard, which was heavy and not really a very good meal (not bad as a shared snack, but not what I wanted to eat for a meal). 2. Location. It's a tiny bit further outside the loop than I would normally go - and quite a bit of a hike for our friend who lives in Sugar Land. All in all, we had a great time at Spindletap - and I would definitely come back with a big group of friends!
google avatar

Kade M.

Yelp
Best place ever. Brewery that has mini golf, soccer, baseball, basketball, volleyball, arcade, frisbee golf, football. AND MORE! I'm a genuine customer from Louisiana and wish I lived here to go everyday!

Tom K.

Yelp
Probably the best craft brew in Houston. Always a good selection on tap and a fun time on the weekends. If you like it a little hazy, you're not going to find anything comparable, this side of the Mason Dixon Line.

Ivan O.

Yelp
This negative review has mostly to do with whoever manages there social media. This place is constantly closing at random times for private events. That's fine just accurately update your Instagram and Twitter and let us know. Case in point they put a post that they'll be closed on Friday for a private event. Ok cool it's Saturday no way they'd have a private event the next day and not also post about it right? Oops egg on my face for thinking no one would be that dumb. Yes I should of called but why they clearly would've posted about it on there IG. Either post whenever you have a private event or don't post at all. Posting like half the time defeats the purpose. Also beer is pretty mediocre when there not holding a private event. There's better options inside the loop. Last time going there.
google avatar

Katia G.

Yelp
i'm currently at the brewery as i'm writing this review and let me tell y'all!!!!!!!!!!! -no mask! -no social distancing being enforced! -completely everyone including children are being wild with the situation - there is so many humans in this small piece of land leaving know honestly (after 5 minutes) came simply because im tired of being at home and wanted to go out to a outdoor place but its still a no go. us humans are a beautiful chaos and we all clearly part of the problem and allowing businesses like this to continue to do as they please is why its taking longer for the pandemic to be controlled.
google avatar

Yelp
I quickly visited this brewery when I traveled down to Houston. Lots of good options but their IPAs are really good. I'm very happy that they started to sell their beer in the Dallas area now. They did a good job with distribution since you can find it everywhere now. The set up of this place is very classic. Long tables where you can meet new friendly people and plenty of board games. I don't have anything negative to say about this place. I hope they can continue make their great beer!
google avatar

Stephanie V.

Yelp
This brewery is in a warehousing complex like most new breweries. They at really good about directing you how to get there with the signs once you're in the vicinity. Once you walk in, it's very open with a lot of seating options along with bar top seating. I saw pictures of flights which drew me into going but when I arrived they told me they no longer do flights =( sucks for someone like me who never been and wants to try multiple beers. I ended up hanging out for a few beers trying their Wildcatter, Honey hole and Hop Gusher. I tried their double wit first. Omg it was awesome! So light and I could taste some all spice flavors. This beer is made with tamarind and agave. The Honey hole had malty notes, while the Hop Gusher was a straight IPA. The brewery is only about 2 years old and I'm sure they sell out of their beers fast! People were coming in for cans that were released that day and were sold out! Both the on tap and cans! Majority of the crowd came info for "hazy beers" but they ran out. There were still a good amount of options for brew especially if you like stouts. Whenever I go to a new brewery I always end up purchasing a shirt from them. Their design and idea for their logo is pretty cool. Read about It on their site! Overall good beer and funny bar team making beer for all! Tip: hoppy hour Friday  $3 pints and $5 specialty beers (derrickman and on call)
google avatar

Theresa M.

Yelp
The brewery is a little too far out from the city for me. The beer was okay but only $4, the pizza from the food truck was solid, but the overall atmosphere was mediocre. The game was on, It was family and dog friendly, and there was a crawfish boil ending. It just seemed to pull a slightly older crowd than the breweries in midtown / eado.
google avatar

Johanna V.

Yelp
Small brewery, that had good beer on tap. I felt the place looked more of a bar than it did it a brewery. I didn't get to order any food, but the pizza appeared to look good. It's a bit of a drive to get there, so I probably wouldn't make the drive again. If you live in the area or close by it's worth checking out. They had a good amount of parking space and the place it self is spacious with big tables so it's easy to find seating.
google avatar

Stuart L.

Yelp
We may be a little biased because we know some of the folks that work here, and we came here the first time not long after they opened up. But we love the beer and the vibe of this place. In of itself, it's not fancy and is a little off the beaten path. It's a got a tap room area, a warehouse area with picnic tables, corn hole, and a basketball hoop, and it's got its own pizza oven. Pizzas are awesome, with some styles that you could only get in Texas. Highly recommend this pace for the great beer, great food, and a great place to hang out with friends.
google avatar

Nicole K.

Yelp
Beer was cold, staff was friendly. Atmosphere had an awesome family vibe. Met one of the owners. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Bradley R.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our family get together at Spindletap Brewery - nothing like good beer on tap with good company. Outside space provides covered, shaded, and open air picnic tables that are comfortably spaced, as well as a very nice indoor seating area with tv (March Madness was on). A food truck provided spicy sausage, warm/salty pretzels, and bags of fresh boiled crawfish. Good times!
google avatar

Pedro G.

Yelp
Pros- Went for the first time and were taken care of real well by the bartenders. We were able to get a tasting of all their beers and I honestly gotta say I was surprised on how good it was!!! Will definitely come back! Cons- will still give it a 5 just wish they were open more often
google avatar

Kris U.

Yelp
The spacious and modern tasting room offers plenty of seating. This brewery wins the award for best (cleanest) bathrooms! It also offers easily accessible ample parking. For a newer brewery they offer a surprisingly diverse selection of beers, surely something to please every palate. Our visit to the Houston area was a whirlwind brewery tour so I'm just listing my favorites - hands down my favorite here is the Pecao! The unique and delicious Pecao! is described as a "brown IPA"; along with hops you get hints of cacao and a sweetness from the pecans.
google avatar

Alicia V.

Yelp
This brewery is set up very nicely, they have an indoor and outdoor patio with a pizza food truck set up outside. When I walked in I saw how much Houston pride this brewery has (kuddos!) and a neat display of their merchandise. I did snag me a shirt . I told the bartender it was my first time and she was very helpful in helping me determine which beers I wanted to try on my flight ($9). On fridays is happy hour, -$1. Very nice staff and great tasting beers!
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Really nice brew pub that they sling their main lineup out of day today. They also release some pretty awesome beers once or twice a month. They've got a wood fired pizza truck if you're hungry and plenty of TVs to catch a game if that's your thing. Staff can be a little snarky on release days, but I probably would be too with a bunch of dudes getting drunk at 8am while they wait to buy beer.
google avatar

Clarissa V.

Yelp
This is such a great place and spacious. It's kid-friendly and the food and drinks were great. They have a pizza truck (haven't tried) but the food from the bar was yummy.

Yelp
First timer... felt rushed when ordering & picking out beer to buy. So disappointed bc this our favorite IPA!

Yelp
The Spindletap Brewery is located on the north side of Houston just a few blocks east of Hwy 59 the Eastex Freeway. This beautiful brewery shares a space with a number of different oil field-related companies operating out of this 65,500 sq ft location. Now, some people have a restaurant inside the building where they work. But at Spindletap, you have a full-blown brewery at your fingertips. Let's just say that's my kind of place! Spindletap Brewery is a relative newcomer to the Texas scene. But these guys are making a big impact right out of the gates! They have spared no expense on their facilities and the tasting room is immaculate. It's the perfect place to watch sporting events, play games or host parties and events in the extra-large, 25,000 sq. ft. warehouse space. I absolutely love the play on words with the name. What a great name for a Texas brewery! Their tap handle art is really cool, too! Take a look at the photography... does that shout Texas or what? We made our way to the brewery on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. You can tell right off the bat that the word has gotten out about this new brewery on the Northside. People were playing games, eating crawfish from a local vendor and, of course, drinking Top Texas Craft Beer! When you walk through the doors, you can see the workings of the brewery through large, glass windows. There is a short line to get into the brewery, but no big deal as you can literally see a flat-screen TV from every angle. Very nice touch guys! Even better than that, when one of the owners saw a line was starting to form, he came out and started handing out samples. Love it! I could stand in this line all day! Ha! While there, I ran into some old friends I hadn't seen in over 20 years. They told me they came all the way from across town to support their favorite craft brewery. It's a perfect example of what Spindletap Brewery represents - bringing friends together, old and new, through the brewing process and their wonderful craft beer. One thing that is very apparent is the brewery's connection to the people who enjoy their beer. The owners and staff not only handle the heavy traffic with smiles and handshakes - they also take the time to chat with patrons and answer any questions they may have. I am really impressed with Spindletap Brewery. It's hard to believe they are new to the game. When you have the right people in place, it shows! Well, they obviously do and it's a place you want to visit. I can't wait to see what they come up with next. You can bet it's gonna be good!
