The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska | Eater

"This well-priced takeout only restaurant in a strip mall in Anchorage’s Mountain View neighborhood serves Peruvian-style chicken, cooked in a wood-charcoal rotisserie, and lots of well-executed sides, including beans, arepas, agave-lime slaw, and sticky sweet plantains. They sell chicken until they run out so call early to put in an order." - Julia O'Malley

Google
First time going and it was delicious--we had both the white and dark meat options with corn fritters, arroz congri, cilantro mojo chicken, and green and red sauces. It's a lot of food and it came quick. Everything is clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The chicken was delicious and moist, even the breast, and my favorite were the fritters. I preferred the red sauce because it had a tiny bit of spice. I hope they're popular and grow enough to eventually have a dining in option, because that's the only down side--it's strictly take out. We'll be back.

Saw them from the McDonald's line and decided it was a lot less waste on my wallet and health. BEST decision I made that day! The chicken is incredibly juicy while the skin was crispy! The flavors were good, and the sides were pretty delicious, they gave me a few sampler cups to try the other stuff and I appreciated it! I would pick this over KFC, Chicken Shack, or Raising Cane's. If you haven't tried them out yet, you are missing out! The picture of the corn was their display but looked delicious.

If you have not tried their chicken yet, you NEED to! Everything was delicious and the chicken was over the top moist and flavorful. So much food it will feed two, sorry for eating a bit before taking this picture! 🤣 Right next to McDonald's when you turn onto Mountain View Drive

Google
We had gone to Grow North Farms for their market. We had a wonderful time. Enjoyed some Egyptian sweets. But there was no food truck. We found Spinz, a Peruvian cookery. Ohhhhhhh...the chicken was warm and tender and juicy and flavorful. We got the yucca fries which were crisp on the outside and tender inside. Our only other experience with yucca fries was PANGEA. We got coleslaw and got the arroz chaufa which was spicy and tasty. This was a memorable meal.

Google
Food is AMAZING. 12 hour brined chicken, and you get alot for your money. As for sides, they were good, but the street corn they make is the star. I could easily eat here a couple days a week.

Google
Went to order the chicken curry, for the Friday special. Claimed they didn’t have any for their Friday special. Substituted it for the tacos also found a full bone in one of the tacos. Disappointed. Taco Bell makes better taco and that’s saying a lot.

Google
We were so excited to come Try Spinz! We also like to rate a place based on the Service and the quality of the food. The food was excellent and delish! It’s upsetting that some folks that come here to compare the fusion style Peru Food to The authenticity of the dish. It’s in the name It’s a tasty fun Twist of Peru Food! We enjoyed it the service was outstanding, all smiles , as a veteran I love supporting locally owned and veteran owned business. You can’t compare a dish in the states that’s a fusion of a countries food to the home land food in that country , that’s nonsense . The food is delish and I will be back!

Google
$18 for the 1/4 chicken meal and drink seems high for the amount of chicken you get. Sides were tasty, chicken was moist, apple soda was great. Next time I think I'm just gonna grab some sides and drink here then get a Costco rotisserie chicken.

Yelp
I decided to come here during lunch break after remembering the great food I had when they took orders at a lunch cart in Bell's Nursery about a year ago on a summer weekend. Spinz is located at the very end of a small strip mall right next door to McDonald's on Mountain View Dr. The place is small and there is no seating area which would have been nice for a restaurant like this but hopefully that will be in the plans somewhere down the line. The place was busy when I came in around noon. A lot of working regulars as well as some military personnel from Elmendorf Air Force base were waiting patiently in line to place an order. I had placed an order through the Toaster Takeout app and had it scheduled to pick up at 12:15PM, but you would have to stand in line instead of going to a designated station for pickup. A pleasant surprise when I finally came up to the register was that they serve your pickup order by making it at a prep station adjacent to the registers. The wait was only a couple of minutes and this was better than having it sit on the counter and grow cold. I ordered the 1/4 Dark Rotisserie Chicken with Cilantro Mojo Chicken Salad (a Latin spin on chicken salad with cilantro, tri-colored peppers, garlic, mint, extra virgin olive oil, and the restaurant's house-made spice blend) and the Peperonata Criolla (sofrito with bell peppers, garlic, tomatoes, onions, chilis, and assorted veggies). The Peperonata Criolla was absolutely delicious with the sofrito mixed in. The sofrito itself came on the side. I had initially mistook it as a side of salsa until I realized that it was supposed to be mixed in as part of the dish. Likewise, the Mojo Chicken was also very good. The garlic and the cilantro were very noticeable and a great complement with the other ingredients. The Rotisserie Chicken was very tender and moist after being brined and slow-cooked for 12 hours according to the restaurant's website. The Salsa Blanca I chose as the sauce was a great mild spice level option which focused more on flavor. There is a spicy sauce option like the Salsa Aji Amarilla or the Fry Sauce. Peruvian-style cuisine is something you don't see often here in Anchorage and as someone who has lived in Florida, this is badly needed for more versatile options in town. I can't finish this review without mentioning some of the other items on the menu and I will definitely be coming back in the near future to try them out. Some of the more noticeable items include full-rack or half-rack Baby Back Ribs with a choice of either a jerk marinade or house-smoked seasoned rub, the Spin of the Day, daily specials served throughout the week like the Lamb Sandwich (thin-sliced smoked lamb with garlic aioli, caramelized onions, and fennel on a French roll) served on Thursdays, White Chicken Chili with white beans, chilies, topped with onions and cilantro, and their signature Chicken Tacos (tomatoes, dried plums...that's different, olives, and onions with spices and their signature Spinz sauce. They also offer larger portions of meat at market price like Rib Roast, Leg of Lamb, and Smoked Turkey Breast for family dinners or office gatherings. Catering is also available and comes as a package selection of certain items on their menu. Hopefully, they can add a seating area and that will increase business considerably.

Yelp
The CHICKEN ! This place knows how to cook or roast a chicken. I was hungry after spending 3 hours at Bass Pro Shop and I looked up a local restaurant. This was the suggestion and it was well worth it. I ordered the 1/4 all white chicken and as soon as I bit i to it, the juices were coming out. My sides were fried yuca and congri. The portions are massive and you will leave very satisfied. The staff was great and they ensured that I liked their product. The owner/chef came out just to ask me what did I think about the food. I told him that it was GRRREAT! The restaurant is clean and while you can't eat inside they have one table outside of the store that you can sit. If you don't want to cook and you want a healthy option, come here and get the whole chicken. You will be glad that you did and you are helping a small business owner. Healthy and tasty chicken !

Yelp
We gave Spinz another shot thinking they may have been having a bad day the first time, but sadly, still quite disappointed. The chicken itself was very salty, at least the skin was. So if you're a skin lover like me, you may not enjoy the saltiness of this. The sauce, although pretty good, didn't help fix that issue. The chicken meat, however, was not bad. We also got the Arroz Chaufa, which was also VERY SALTY. It could've been good, but the salt just overpowered the whole dish. Unfortunately, we most likely won't be going back there.

Yelp
After learning about Spinz more than a year ago, I finally got a chance to try it. Friends were coming over for dinner, so it was a great opportunity to try lots of their dishes. I placed an online order on 4/11/24 at 11:57am-- hoping to pick it up hours later at 3pm. The online system-- apparently Toast-- was okay, but automatically assigned every known "modifier" to each item, regardless of category (ie. it assumed I was an allergic vegan who wanted my sauces neither hot not cold) and-- as such-- required me to deselect them all. I promptly received an email for the order confirmation-- then another a few minutes later, which reported that "there was a problem with my order-- call Spinz" (see screenshot #1). Over the next half an hour, I tried to call Spinz many times (see screenshot #2). It was around noon-- typically when you'd think a restaurant would be taking business-- but there was no answer. I began to think their site had been compromised, and visited my credit card's fraud information page. They suggested contacting the vendor prior to taking graver steps, so I took a deep breath and tried calling again. Lo, there was an answer! The male voice that answered explained that they were busy-- no excuse in my book, with more than 10 years working in restaurants--but that my order had just been approved and would be ready at the designated time. When a friend arrived later to pick the order up, the staff helped him carry the large order out. The unpacking of the feast began once everyone was present, and there were immediate concerns. Despite ordering an abundance of sauces-- hearing that they were one of Spinz's highlights, I ordered an extra $10 worth-- there were only 8 tiny 0.5oz (not even a shot's worth) containers of the various sauces for two whole chickens (see screenshot #3). 8 sauces were supposedly included with the chicken itself, so I'm not sure whatever happened to my $10. You can also imagine the looks & thoughts from 3 gents who were trying to decide which of us to kill so there'd be sauce for the chicken. Speaking of the chicken, it was very good. For the little chicken that actually got touched by sauce, it was indeed a fantastic combination. The amarillo, vinegar & green sauces were highlights-- there might not have been enough of the others to get a feeling for them. The sweet plantains were also very good, and the rice/beans combination was interesting. The white beans-- by themselves-- were pretty bland, though. The "agave lime coleslaw" seemed to have no taste other than the cabbage, and may well have been the culprit in all three of us getting "digestive issues" later that evening (it was the only uncooked dish). I disagree with one of the comments I read about cost. If everything that I had ordered had actually made it into the bags, I would have said that it was reasonable. The full order never made it into the bags, though-- and in my experience, an order more than $100 (see screenshot #4) would usually get better attention (this wasn't "lemme get one rib!"). If you decide to try Spinz, I'd recommend going in person so you can be sure of what you're getting (check each item) and what you pay for. On 4/11/24-- a Thursday-- I didn't.

Yelp
I really wanted to love this place, but I just can't. Chief concern: value. This is probably the most expensive food in Alaska, in terms of what you pay for and what you get. I paid almost $17 and I got a piece of chicken smaller than my fist* and one side, a bowl of corn and tomatoes. The side was good and the chicken was good. So what am I complaining about? Well, the chicken tasted exactly like the chicken at Fred Meyer to me. I'm not hating, I freakin' LOVE a Fred Meyer chicken. The problems is that I usually get a whole chicken for around $8. And I got a quarter of a chicken here for $16. Some quick math (16*4 = 64, 64/8 = 8) reveals that the chicken here is rough 8 TIMES more expensive than Fred Meyer. Is it 8 times as good? Hell no! Is it twice as good? Hell no! Does it taste roughly the same? Heck yes! It also came with a some sauce that tasted a lot like mayo. This place is A-OK, but the outrageous pricing make it a no for me. It's especially confusing given the awesome working class neighborhood they are located in that's brimming with better (and cheaper) choices. *and I have really, really small hands. I wear a men's small in glove sizes, and sometimes even those are baggy on me!

Yelp
Spinz has only gotten better and better since they opened. I love their chicken - it's so juicy and very well seasoned. Their jerk ribs are great and so is their jerk sauce. Green beans are always very flavorful and good. Spinz is a great option if you're looking for real food - not fast food - that's cooked fresh, tastes great, and is at a reasonable price point. The owner, who always makes you feel like an appreciated customer, has definitely put a lot of heart and hard work into his restaurant and it shows!

Yelp
I have now attempted to get dinner 4 times from here. Only once have I been successful. They are always out of chit. Or they can only offer me 1/4. The one time I have actually been able to get a whole chicken they left out a a side that was included and an order of plantains. Today I went in with just under 2 hours before they closed and they couldn't fill my order. No offer of a discount or hey come back again and we will take 10% off your order. What good is have really good chicken if when people come to get it. You don't have any. I really want to support local businesses but, as m not sure I will go out of my way to try and get their chicken again.

Yelp
I was really psyched to see a new local food joint join the Mt. View Fam so of course I had to stop by. They serve Peruvian inspired rotisserie chicken and side dishes with some Latin flare. I knew this spot was a grab & go with no dine-in option (which is kind of a bummer). I hope they'll add a couple tables outside for the summer. They're located next to McDonald's and share the same building as Dominos, Tempera Express, and Alpenglow Brewery. They have a shared parking lot that is hardly ever 50% full unless trucks are there to drop off store goods. FOOD Whole Rotisserie Chicken ($35) 2/5: I had high hopes since it's said that the chicken is brined for 12hrs and cooked over wood charcoal but the chicken wasn't as tender as I'd thought, overly salty, and the charcoal flavor didn't penetrate into the meat. The chicken skin held a lot of the spices flavor and a hint of charcoal flavor but it was too salty to enjoy. *Note - chicken is definitely smaller but I assume they use free range or something since it's advertised as 'healthy' which I was fine with. Arroz Chaufa (+$1.50 to combo) 2.5/5: This was pretty good and taste similar to an adobo fried rice but once again, it leaned on the salty side. Cilantro Mojo Chicken (+$1.50 to combo) 3/5: The cilantro flavor is in the forefront and the bell peppers pair nicely to keep the chicken on the lighter side. This was the winner since it wasn't overly salted, dare I say slightly under salted. Sauces ( 2 Free w/ Combo, add on +$1 ): They were okay but not to my flavor profile that'd I'd repurchase outside of my free two choices. Overall, I'd come by again in a few weeks to try whether or not the saltiness of the food is normal - I understand every batch can differ. Flavor wise, it's not my cup of tea - it was a bit underwhelming. Everyones palette is different and I can see others enjoying this simple but unique twist to rotisserie. I think the concept is great and with some tweaking and consistency I hope to see this business thrive!

Yelp
I promise you've never had chicken this good. The meat is moist, skin is crisp, flavor is phenomenal. You mix that with some of the best service in the restaurant business and you've got a winner. They took a lot of time to explain the menu and the clearly take pride in what they offer. Check this place out, but bring your appetite!

Jim H.

Yelp
Had the lamb tacos (served on Tuesdays), yuca, and corn fritters -- excellent! I only wish he had a larger place with seating. Service is good, but they do get busy at lunch -- well worth the wait every time.

Valerie W.

Yelp
I love this restaurant! They have good food and even better service. If you're following a low carb diet, this should be your new go to place for a protein and veg!

Nick B.

Yelp
Unique restaurant that has quality ingredients and food is good every time. Staff is friendly. Be careful about waiting too late in the evening for dinner, they run out of items on the menu because they're made every day.

Nathan A.

Yelp
Order ahead before they even opened to ensure lunch by noon. Showed up and was told they did not have our food and it would be another 45 mins. No phone call to let us know or anything. Just bad business practice. Cancelled our order never got to try their food. Do better!

Yelp
The food was amazing, the whole chicken was tender and flavorful. Loved the arepitas!!! Buying directly in restaurant saves you a ton of cash door dash price was 10 more for the chicken alone?

Mike L.

Yelp
Dec 16th 2022 5:30 today i go in to order the main dish chicken just to b told there is no more chicken for the day. Spinz don't close til 8pm , so you are telling me there is no chicken @ a chicken spot with more then a few hours left in the day. If you can't cook any chicken or have chicken ready maybe you should just close up shop. It's Friday and it's like the female employe just wanted to go home early. I will never go back and will never refer this place to anyone. this is the 2nd time I've seen this happen. NO DAM CHICKEN. I guess it's KFC or popeyes. Not a happy customer to the expensive No chicken having Spinz.

Bea C.

Yelp
Chicken had great flavor. I ordered half a chicken to share but it was so small like a game hen it wasn't enough for two. The cole slaw was really good. Was disappointed in the corn as I thought it would be hot but it was cold and served as a salad. The staff was fabulous. I will try again with different sides.

Jake H.

Yelp
This place is insane. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and hot when we got it, all of the sides are killer (especially recommend the cilantro mojo chicken), and everyone inside is super nice and helpful. If the owner is there he will even give you the low-down and help you with recommendations if you'd like! The sides are so big that my wife had one large side and one small side as her meal, and I split a half chicken meal with sides with someone else. You won't leave hungry! And $30 for three people was a pretty good price we thought. We will definitely be back.

Kenneth M.

Yelp
Ordered a full chicken, salad and arroz chaufa. NONE of it was worth the $30+ price tag. Chicken: The only thing Peruvian about this was the wood coals it was cooked over. The chicken was salty, soggy skinned, and small. It looked smaller than a standard rotisserie chicken from Fred Meyers. It didn't even feed 3 adults. Salad: Peruvian salads at pollarias are always lettuce w/sliced tomatoes, cucumber and avocado. Nothing new here. Seriously disappointed in the lack of a Peruvian vinaigrette dressing, as it is a lighter version of American ranch. Arroz chaufa: Barely anything more than a poor imitation of the real thing. No flavor, just lots of salt again. It's highly disappointing that this was the offerings of a chef of 20 years. I was hoping for closer to the real deal not an subpar imitation

Yelp
We ordered the half chicken with two sides and used the coupon I received via email from the last visit. The chicken was all you would imagine, perfectly spiced and tender. The sides were just ordinary. We wanted to eat and have a beer next door so they brought our order next door when it was ready and ate at the pub. Nice little arrangement!

Annette C.

Yelp
Great flavor! Large portions! Delicious chicken and arroz chaufa! A new favorite! Quick takeout for a full meal -- great alternative to fast food.

Susette B.

Yelp
Amazing food. It's refreshing to find a restaurant that clearly cares about the food they're sending out the door in Anchorage. Really friendly people working the counter.

Greg G.

Yelp
Being a salesman that is constantly on the road it is hard to find a fast meal that is healthy. This chicken was amazing. Flavours were spot on. Most meals in this town go for quantity and not quality. I thought my meal was a great balance between healthy, potion size and dollar amount. I tried a couple of dipping sauces but, I won't do that again. The sauces all tasted great, but the chicken stood on its own and didn't need the sauce at all.

Collette B.

Yelp
So yummy! Service was amazing, food even better, Best chicken around, huge amount and so tender with lots of flavor. Will be going back again and again!

Scott C.

Yelp
One of the hottest new spots in town and now one of my favorite places to eat! Spinz does rotisserie chicken but it's so much more than your average grocery store bird. They cover it in Peruvian spices and cook them over a special lump charcoal out of Mexico. The result is probably the best tasting chicken ever! The sides are also Peruvian inspired from escabeche, plantain chips and yucca fries all the way up to cilantro mojo chicken. They make everything in house with an emphasis on authentic flavors. You can see how passionate they are about the food in every bite. It's take out only and they're still working out the kinks since they just opened but I'll definitely be back!

L D.

Yelp
Wanted to try something new and Spinz was amazing! Warm and welcoming folks and the chicken and sides were really delicious. We ordered the whole chicken which they cut for us and added the premium rice side and plantains side. Fresh and extremely flavorful! This place is a great change of pace from our normal chicken options. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Patrick J.

Yelp
I stopped in for the sweet plantains. I ended up getting some of the arroz de chaufa as well. The food was excellent. I can't wait to go back for the Chicken.

Kirsten V.

Yelp
Ordered takeout. Food was delicious, service was delightful, the premises was clean and bright, and pickup was a breeze. Can't believe I haven't come here earlier; will definitely come back again. Chicken was moist and flavorful, peperonata criola bursting with flavor, and the sweet plantains did not disappoint.

Meagan S.

Yelp
We ordered this through door dash tonight and both of us got the half bird and 2 sides. OMG that was the best chicken I've ever had in my life! Also, the sides were so good and full of flavor (we each randomly picked sides we have never heard of). Totally recommend this place!!!

Lindsay K.

Yelp
Excited to see a Peruvian restaurant here!! The inside of the restaurant was nice and clean. The service was really good. The flavor of the half chicken was very good! The fries were a little salty but the seasoned yucca were yummy. They were not greasy either which was nice . They forgot to add our arroz chaufa to our to go order so we called. The owner brought the arroz to the house, which was beyond what we expected!! And added some fried plantains!! We are here on vacation but would definitely be eating here more if we lived here.

emily c.

Yelp
The chx tasted delicious. I could tell it was better quality meat just by the taste alone. I wonder if they use no hormone chx because of its size. The price and size hold good competition to other chx joints, like Lucky Wishbone. I would love it if they implemented a "Bowl" option. I would fill it with their Peperonata criolla and rice with their spicy sauce. Definitely try it, your tummy will thank you.
