The Best Portland Sports Bars for Watching Trail Blazers Games | Eater Portland

"Whether it’s Blazers vs. Lakers, Thorns vs. Wave, or Ducks vs. Huskies, Spirit of 77 — named for the first (and so far, only) year the Trail Blazers won an NBA championship — is one of the liveliest spots in town. The food menu touts responsibly sourced chicken for its wings and beef for its burgers." - Rebecca Roland

The Best Portland Restaurants Near Moda Center and Oregon Convention Center | Eater Portland

"Spirit of 77 is one of Portland’s most popular sports bars for both its food and games. Visitors play foosball and Skee-Ball while they wait for platters of stadium nachos piled with cabbage, guacamole, queso, and jalapeños or tacos filled with beer-battered cod; on certain nights, it’s the spot to watch games around its projector screen or televisions. The beer list has a tight list of Oregon beers, including options from Heater Allen and Fort George." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
Great environment to watch a game on the big screen. They seem to rely heavily on that. The food was meh. The wings were really skinny and really overcooked. The fish tacos included two pieces of fish that were burnt. They clearly don't prioritize the kitchen. Perhaps go there for the environment and the drinks, not so much for the food.

Google
This place has a really fun vibe and it’s perfect to pregame before any event at the moda center or the convention center. The reason why I felt compelled to write the review today is because their JoJo’s are crazy big each one is the size of about a quarter of the biggest potato you can think of and The mushy potato inside to fried surface area of the exterior ratio is off so I just wouldn’t recommend that particular item on the menu.

Google
We stumbled on this place while visiting and wanting to watch US soccer. Cannot recommend this spot enough! Great food and beers but also a full bar if you want cocktails. The turkey sandwich with mama lil’s peppers is delicious! The burger was also delicious and I recommend adding the peppers to it. Great atmosphere to watch games, play indoor games, socialize, and unwind. We look forward to our next visit to Portland just so we can pop over here again.

Google
Came by to watch NHL playoffs and have a few snacks. Great spot to watch sports and have a bite. Plenty of seating and screens to watch whatever is on. Food was good and arrived quick.

Google
The staff is very nice at this bar/restaurant but the food is just average. The burger was serviceable, but they didn't have typical toppings like mayo and mustard. The jojos were a bit underdone, while the onion rings were overdone. Free refills on the fountain sodas were a nice touch. Proximity to the Convention Center means it is a little pricey for what it is, but during the convention we attended at mid-day, it was a ghost town inside. They do have a free-play set of make-a-shot basketball games and lots of big screen tvs showing the games.

Google
Great place to watch any sports game. The projector screen is massive and the seating style is great! The basketball hoops and dartboards are a nice touch as well. A pitcher was $24 and the Jo Jo’s were huge.

Google
Went down to Portland for the Trailblazers vs Clippers game. Stopped here before. No staff greeted or explained that it was open seating. We ended up sitting at the front bar which was not being operated, all of that was fine. Figured out you have to go to the back bar to order. We ordered drinks (no energy drink options for a vodka redbull or tequila redbull). The bar staff was extremely friendly and very helpful when asked questions. We ordered fish tacos and nachos. In the process of waiting for food at our seats we noticed some ants crawling on the counter top. We probably smashed like 15 of them. We notified someone and they said "Oh well we don't really use this bar that much." Food was alright nothing special probably would order food from here again. Great atmosphere 👌

Google
Very large open room sports bar with a great selection of cocktails and local taps. After two visits the service has been exceptional, fast and friendly. For bar food the menu items are very good. Free pop-a-shot basketball! Cleanest sports bar I have ever visited.
google avatar

Yelp
Big screens to watch any sport! Great beer list and nice and big dining area! Onion rings are decent if you like really breaded rings ! Great place to unwind.

Yelp
Came here to watch the UConn VS Iowa game! So glad to have a place to watch women's sports. The service was great despite the huge crowd. Everyone was super nice. The food was okay. The onion rings started off great, but some bites were way undercooked. Pretzel was good. I am not a fan of Jojos. No one has ever eaten a French fry and wished it was a potato wedge. I will die on the hill that shoe string fries and aioli should be present at every establishment.

Nun Y.

Yelp
Service was good, food was mediocre, but the real kicker is the seats were extremely uncomfortable. I think a sports bar should have comfortable seating. No one wants to spend three or four hours perched on a backless metal stool to watch a game.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little sports bar! Got my food and drink easily (the nachos are huge!) and was able to watch football and have good conversation with my friend without it being too rowdy. Service was good, food came out very quickly. Location is rough though, if there's something happening at the Convention Center there's practically no parking.
google avatar

Jerry C.

Yelp
Great place to go before any event at moda or the convention center. Staff is great, food is awesome and beer selection is perfect. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Jen L.

Yelp
This sports bar was close to our conference hotel and a group of us were just looking to get out for a bit. And my friends actually wanted to watch sports. There are beaucoup TVs and they were tuned a variety of games. We had a variety of local beers and ciders, plus I got their house old fashioned. I was a little nervous about the blend of whiskeys and the bartender warned me that it was pre-batched but I don't mind that if it's well done. I have to say it was really tasty! Service was quick but I was surprised that they seemed to be closing an hour earlier then what was on their website.

Yelp
Hence spirit of 77 is a blazer bar I will be nice lol. For having such huge space I just wasn't a fan of this bar me and my gf met her work friends here for drinks and appetizers. The beer glasses were warm to start nobody likes drinking beer out of a warm beer glass it literally happened twice the glass was so warm it turned the beer warm. The food came out extremely quick to quick I had the nachos and the wings the wings were fine had a nice dry rub on em it got the job done. The nachos not so much all the melted queso sat at the bottom none of the chips had cheese on em and the were covered with cold veggies likes pepper and red cabbage. The only bright side I can say is that this place has good service no long waits for drinks and the staff is extremely nice. But the food can be a lot better
google avatar

Annette B.

Yelp
I had a nice meal and a beer here. All was delicious! You do have to order at the bar first but everything comes out pretty efficiently after that. The bartender was terrific with his recommendations, as well!

Nicole B.

Yelp
Great surprise spot to grab a drink and watch the game. It was packed with Ducks fan but service was fast and the burger was really delish!

Ken H.

Yelp
Great 4 watching multiple live sports. Spacious/seating very impressive tv selections
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
This is the best spot to meet up with friends before or after a Blazers game. It's walkable to Moda, and as long as you don't mind that it gets really really crowded on game days, they have a good selection of drinks and the bar food is truly solid for bar food. Wings are actually pretty great here, and there's lots of seating available.
google avatar

Theresa A.

Yelp
Came by to meet friends before a concert and it was so packed. We were able to find seating at their communal tables luckily. The wait to order drinks at the bar wasn't too bad. We also ordered pretzel and some wings. The wings were so good! It was cooked just right and perfectly seasoned with the dry rub. The pretzel was hot and delicious as well. Not a bad spot to grab a snack before games or concerts.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Service. Delicious cocktails and the onion rings are fantastic! Multiple Big Screens and room for big groups
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Good bar for before Blazers games or NBA playoffs. I like the free basketball machines when they are working. Good TV setup. One of the only real bar options in that area. Recommended spot
google avatar

Elsa C.

Yelp
This place is conveniently located across from the Oregon Convention Center. So, I decided to try it on Tuesday for lunch. I knew it was labeled a sports bar but I need a place to have lunch as the hotel I was staying at lacked for options for lunch. This is the way things work here. You walk in place your order at the counter they give you a table tent number, you get your water, you find a place to sit they bring you your food, you eat. They bring you your check, you pay your server you leave. I got the fried onion rings which were big and delicious onion rings. Bad thing was that they were on the greasy side on the fingers. But again delicious. I also got an order of fried fish tacos which is 3 fried fish tacos with coleslaw, chipotle aioli on corn tortillas. With a side of corn chips and sauce. Plenty of food at a fair price. Just need more napkins for the onion rings. Service was good, place was convenient. It was a quick lunch.
google avatar

Yelp
Went in just for a drink with a couple peoples. Happened to be pretty empty which was nice. Atmosphere is roomy, fun, lots of screens and tables, as well as 4 free pop-a-shot basketball hoops to play on. (Unfortunately only one scoreboard and timer worked on them. Maybe they should fix that?) At any rate is a solid place for a drink before a game or event at Moda, the convention center, or other things in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
They serve craft beer, they have craft wooden pews, they have craft food, and wee-little craft doors on the bathroom stalls. Unfortunately, the vibe ends at the cash register. THE FOOD: For the price of the chicken wings, I could've booked a flight to Buffalo, New York, rented a GMC Yukon, and hired a private chef for a week to prepare me *buffalo wings in Buffalo, Ny. Think I'm exaggerating or being facetious? The price: 3 CHICKEN WINGS FOR $16... you read that correctly and no, Bobby Flay for Gordon Ramsey didn't personal make them, no Salt Bae was not there sprinkling salt while wearing the costume from Grease. The wings tasted average, but carried a cost like they were featured on the travel channel. THE VIBE: The vibe is the only reason why I gave them 3 stars and not 2. The staff was nice and friendly, the crowed not too rowdy, and the TV setup was above average. They even have free arcade hoops and darts that anyone can play at any time. The pros: - Atmosphere - Proximity to the freeway and Moda Center - Free arcade hoop games - Free darts - Friendly staff and customer base Cons: - Everything else (EVERYTHING)
google avatar

Annie H.

Yelp
Love the large spacious bar! It's a fun place and I always find myself enjoying the free arcade basketball game and the darts. The food is also decent. They've got a large projector and it's usually packed when there's a big sports game on. A great place for a large group to gather.

Yelp
Awesome sports bar located right across the street from the Convention Center. Lots of seating - we were even able to get a table all the way alone in the corner to make us feel a little more comfortable with covid concerns. I had the most unique beer I've ever had - the Boss Rambler Fruited Sour Ale. It was infused with charcoal, had a thick consistency, and actually tasted like yogurt or a smoothie. It was not very sour, but I really enjoyed it!
google avatar

Krista D.

Yelp
Wish I could give a 0 for the experience I had. The bartender Hunter was extremely unprofessional and very sexist towards women and made me feel uncomfortable throughout the entire time I was there. Just giving a heads up to any ladies planning a visit.
google avatar

Shauna F.

Yelp
Good place to watch sports. Free basketball hoop game. The food was a lot better than I was expecting. Friendly service
google avatar

Jen V.

Yelp
I've had this place bookmarked for awhile but not being the biggest sports fan and the mixed reviews I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it - boy was I wrong! Was lucky enough to come around lunch time and had a great time. If I was a big sports fan this place would be great - huge projector and lots of TVs steaming games. The place is really open and has fun activities to stay awhile - including darts and basketball. The food was really good - highly recommend the nachos. Our cocktails were yummy - and strong - we got the old fashioned and the medicina latina. We were lucky to be the only one there so of course service was great!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
Super cool spot just down the street from the convention center. Enjoyed the wings and the burger and a super awesome pretzel. Just the quick lunch we needed.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
I can't comment around the food since we came post-game and the kitchen already closed, but if you're looking to go out before or after a game/event Spirit is a solid option. Definitely easy to walk here or take other transportation since parking can get crazy. Large open space with plenty of beers on tap (you may even say too many options!) and plenty of screens to watch games. I can see this place getting crazy before hand so it was nice to check out the space with less crowds. It was a double win since there was no line for basketball and other games so you can really hangout around that area. Did I mention they don't charge you for basketball!? Say whaaat. Staff also didn't really rush us as they were clearing up to end the night. Appreciate it!
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
I went here with some friends. It's a great atmosphere to watch a game in. We were there for a Giants game and they had the big screen and multiple TVs running the game. They have a ton of high tops that are great for groups of all sizes. Their beer list and drinks menu is very solid as well with totally decent prices. The only negative we encountered is parking can be frustrating especially with it being so near the convention center. There was an event going on when we were there so parking was very limited and all the meters were charging "event" prices.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
A straightforward sports bar with many many TVs showing games. Long bench tables made it very easy to find seats and get you talking to your fellow sport-watching neighbors; very fun and casual vibe. Free shooting hoops for you to test out your skills were a nice addition to the place. Big bars serving simple cocktails, beers, and some wines. Food was decent too. The Nacho was passable with queso cheese but other ingredients were fresh. Their Jojos, Burger, and Pretzel looked enticing as well.

Robert N.

Yelp
I enjoy the atmosphere during a game, but OMG do they train the bar staff to pour 12 oz into a 16 oz pint?!?! I've never seen consistency like this, under pouring every pint of beer. Wow.

Aaron C.

Yelp
Don't let the name or website fool you. This is not a "Portland-centric" bar. This is not a Blazers bar. Not even a loyal-to-the-NW bar. Read the other reviews with similar experiences. On the big screen, they'll play the Lakers over the Blazers, the 9ers and Rams over the Seahawks, etc. They give the locals the option to watch on a 30" screen instead. Food is alright and staff is at least friendly, so they get 2 stars even with their false advertising. Need to change the name to Spirit of LA or something more Cali-centric. If you want a better spot, hit up The Independent across the river (4 minutes away).
google avatar

Frank C.

Yelp
Came for some pregame food and drinks on a Friday before a Blazers' game. This place beats Dr. Jack any day in my mind, but it does take a quick half mile walk to Moda Center. Service wise, bartender and waitress were attentive and friendly as we arrived fairly early (5pm ish). While no vaccine record check was required (minus half a star), it still wasn't too packed by the time we left (early 6ish), and no rubbing shoulders like how it was pre-pandemic. Good selection of beers on tap, the burger I had was juicy, but the Jojo was a bit of a disappointment as it tasted crispy and seasoned well on the outside, but was really too big to have enough flavor when eating the whole piece (minus half a star). Overall a good first visit to this spot in the last two years, I will likely come back again for a pregame meal when catching a blazers game at Moda center.
google avatar

Ally F.

Yelp
They have seriously impressive dry rub wings that you need to try! I watched them fresh squeeze their juice for drinks and make them with care. I also enjoyed the free basketball while I was waiting for wings. They deserve a little more hype. The bartenders are cool.
google avatar

Jakob R.

Yelp
Cool spot to go to with a small group of people. The cocktails aren't too pricey compared to other bars in the area and the bartenders were very friendly to us
google avatar

Sharon R.

Yelp
I have to start by saying I don't drink or like noisy places, so for ME this place is 3 stars, but for normal humans who like dark loud sports bars this must be heaven. I was at the OR Convention Center (across the street) for an event and went for dinner afterwards with a friend. We sat in the right front corner, which had a window with some light and was down to a dull roar so we could talk. The reason I'm bothering to write this review is that I got a burger with onion rings and both were surprisingly good. REALLY good. Like I'd go back for another the next time I'm at OCC, even though the friendly server forgot to bring the waters we ordered. No drinks at all unless you're buying booze, I guess? lol
google avatar

Steve R.

Yelp
I am a Rye Whiskey guy. I've noticed oregon is crap for finding good whiskeys. So I decided to go to spirit of 77 and not surprised they don't have nothing either. My deal with this establishment is it's ran by children. No manager on duty and if you want to speak to a manager they will give u an email number. Only happens to places that get a lot of complaints and child managers. They won't even tell u when the manager will be in next. I was charged a $25 hold on my card just to sit at the bar when most bars charge $1 to see if the card is real, this place charges $25 deposit. That pending hold stayed on my card for 10days. My tab and the tip was charged separately and went thru in 2days and this hold didn't drop off until I emailed the manager. Still the manger, Scott, has not called, texted, or emailed me back to let me know anything, to apologies, or just say screw u don't come back. I hope this bar fails like everyone else around them. Nachos were crap, it was like a 12 yr old threw em together. Pours are skimp and the games don't work half the time. I was really disappointed being there. They have standard spirits and a couple top shelves only kids and green drinkers would order. Not to mention the bartender was not very knowledgeable on drinks. Needless to say I won't be going back to mtelling anyone about it, not even to complain
google avatar

Chad N.

Yelp
Great service and friendly! Close to the Oregon convention center. Reasonable prices. I would totally go back just based on the service.

Sarah Q.

Yelp
We went here thinking it was a blazers bar because of the name, but unfortunately they were only playing Sunday football games. When we asked them to kindly put the Blazers game on, they wouldn't. There was a majority of other Blazers fans who inquired and were getting upset too. We asked them multiple times overs the course of a half hour. We're definitely disappointed with this Blazers bar for the lack of playing the Blazers game. We're huge Blazers fans and will not go back.
google avatar

Nooshi B.

Yelp
Cool sports bar with a welcoming vibe and nice decor! The place is open and has some games scattered throughout. Decent prices for alcohol and grub. We stopped by twice during our stay and had fantastic service both times. Their house Chex Mix is a solid snacking choice as is their chips/guac/salsa. Kind bartenders and great setting make for a nice Sunday afternoon! I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Leticia V.

Yelp
While looking for a place to kill time before a concert at the Moda Center, we decided to try this place. It was a cool atmosphere and there were huge screens with sports on and a row of basketball games you could play. The tables were long bar style and apparently there is no wait staff. We sat there for a bit before the bartender hollered at us that we had to order there. The menu was pretty small but had a pretty decent amount of items. With it being taco Tuesday I opted for the fish tacos and a mezcal margarita. We got a bonus of 10% off our bill for checking in on the yelp app...SCORE! The tacos were really good and spicy! The fish was crispy and the slaw was fresh. I'm stoked that we found a place to pre funk before events!
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
Lets set the scene. Friday night, the happy hour crowd is that eclectic mix of "whoo girls", and the sweet, nerdy IT guys that crush after them in the break room. The drinks are decent, they use nacho cheese on their nachos ironically, and you can get Rainer in a bottle if you can withstand the withering gaze of bartender. Lets be real though, you go here because someone at the office said it was cool, you blow your friday night budget praying you will at least get a decent buzz before the check comes, and you grab taco bell on the way home. Other places do it better. Just saying.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
A friend suggested that we come here to check out the NBA playoffs. I recalled they had garage doors and figured they'd raise those with what's going on in this climate. Surprisingly, they had them closed with no open doors. They had the fans going and about three other groups of people were in while I was there. I had recently read a story where Starbucks customers were infected with COVID-19 by a customer sitting and drinking coffee over the course of a few hours and the AC blowing inside the establishment spreading it to customers. The baristas who wore masks the entire time were not affected. I was very anxious about taking off my mask but had already ordered my beverage. I was holding my breath in any time I took a sip and immediately put my mask back on. I wish I was more comfortable but wasn't. Please consider opening the garage doors with the nice weather. I'd rather have a comforted mind versus cool air.

Yelp
Was on the road in Portland and found Spirit on yelp. They had giant screens where I could see in exquisite detail my Dodgers lose the first two games of the World Series - Thanks a lot Spirit of '77. A bit pricey but it's in downtown Portland so everything costs more in urban centers. Good beers, good food, large space, great for watching that big game. One note they don't have a great number of screens so if you're looking to watch that small market football game (Buffalo v Cleveland for example) they probably won't be able to put it on because their main screens are tied up with all the other games.
google avatar

Mitch E.

Yelp
Rip, Rip, Rip CITY!!! Woooooo! The Spirit of 77 is a place I think I would not care for much if it was in New York. Back in New York there are bars that cater to certain fan bases right near the arena or stadium, and I usually hate them. Filled with douchebags. Here everyone is nice. It's still a little too packed, but we enjoyed ourselves. Photobooth that oddly smelled like urine.... I wonder why. Basketball games. Tons of giant flat screens. Large beer selection. Lots of communal tables. It's definitely a crazy, but not too crazy, environment before a game. Worth checking out.
google avatar

Travis K.

Yelp
Good food and great drink prices but the service is a bit of a mess. I was there during a conference and the one waitress in the place was trying so hard to keep up and really struggling. Once we got the food it was great and the portions were solid. If you can deal with slow service and waiting a bit it is totally worth it.
google avatar

Kurt P.

Yelp
This was a great little bar to hang out at. The bar food was simple and good. I recommend getting the Bar nuts...spicy and good. There are some fun games to play, darts and basketball. Great TV's and sports too!

Kyle B.

Yelp
I've really enjoyed my experience at this place the few times I've been! It's got a great beer selection, wonderful staff, some delicious wings, and has become one of my go-to spots to catch a Lakers or Rams game. I know the name is Spirit of '77, but it almost feels like this place should be called Spirit of LA. I feel so welcomed here and highly recommend for any others here from California!
google avatar

Bijana K.

Yelp
I've been here multiple times and just don't get it. Maybe if my group was larger, louder, taller or there earlier, but it always feels like I'm being crowded out by the bro-crowd. Which sucks, because I have a pocket full of quarters for those damn basketball games and could play all day. Have had food there once - it was just okay, but they had a limited menu due to world cup.
google avatar

Jed D.

Yelp
Just had what are likely the best wings I've ever had. And their blue cheese was absolutely incredible. Still have to get to the other bits we ordered, but the wings ensured we're already going back. Thanks much to the guys there for putting it all together quickly, even though I was early. Phenomenal job, y'all.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Cool fun spot to grab a drink while waiting for the traffic (and the surcharged rideshare rates) to die down after a Blazers game. Lots of big screens, a long bar and 4 wooden (free) pop-a-shots to play. We walked here from the Moda Center after a Trailblazers game to kill some time and grab a couple of drinks before ending our night. The places is a popular stop for Blazers fans, so it was pretty busy, but we didn't have to wait long for the barkeep to acknowledge us. They've got a pretty good list of house drinks ranging from a Rainier at $5 to a glass of house white/red/rose for $8.

Yelp
Visited Spirit Of '77 for Sunday football. A terrible experience filled with a perplexing lack of beer, limited food options, incorrect assignment of football games, and hoards of children screaming and running around. Quality: I had planned to hang out at Spirit Of '77 for my entire football game, but barely made it into the second quarter. Everything the bar could do bad, they seemed to do. When I arrived they were pulling two beers off the draft list since the kegs tapped, but they weren't replacing them. This left three beer options, with ten or twelve total taps. Inexcusable when still on the first set of Sunday NFL slate. I was planning to get food as well, but the limited and uninteresting brunch menu was on until 2pm and I didn't make it that far. Quantity: The pours were fair, and from sitting at the bar, the liquor pours were even better. Value: $6-$8 for Draft Beers. Ambiance: Spirit Of '77 is a sports bar located on the east side of the river near Downtown Portland. It is set up much like a beer hall, but replacing the communal tables with high tops. They have a large screen for the main event, then six additional televisions placed in different corners. The audio will play for the event on the large screen. They also have a private room upstairs with an additional television. A big scoreboard sits on the wall showing the beers, which was simply embarrassing during my visit. They also have some basketball arcade games, which were overrun with children. Crowd: Expect a lot of jerseys on Sunday afternoon. But also expect a ton of children running wild. Service: It felt like it was everyone's first day. No one changing kegs, so the beers whittled down to three options, everyone was upset about the game options placed on the televisions, and there was no coordination for the food available. Parking: Extremely difficult to find parking in the area.

Yelp
Do Not get the corn dog. It's gross and chewy. Not sure what kind of cornmeal is used but it's absolutely disgusting. There is a decent selection of beer and whiskey, a great place to watch games if you here early enough but avoid anything that comes from the fryer until they change their oil.
