Shaw’s Late-Night Fried Chicken Shack Roy Boys Will Close This Month - Eater DC

"Clarendon’s patriotic-themed watering hole the Spirits of ’76 will close after four years of business on Sunday, November 1, at 3211 Washington Boulevard. The American comfort foods spot that was known for a vast whiskey list debuted right before the 2016 election and will bow out just before the 2020 election, notes ArlNow. 'Our lease is up at the end of November and it has become unsustainable to continue during these times,' notes a social media post." - Tierney Plumb

I came here for an office lunch and left full, but not completely impressed. It's a nice venue, big enough for our office of 25 people and then some, right along the main Clarendon strip. First thing I noted was our service was really great and our waitress was very friendly. The food quality is what I found most disappointing. We ordered loaded nachos for the table, which could have been good, if the chips weren't either stale or soggy from the toppings. For the entree, I got the Country Fried Steak. The dish looked amazing, but one bite of the steak revealed otherwise: It was very overcooked to the point where some of the fried breading tasted a little burnt. The brussel sprouts were okay (a little too garlicky imo), but at least the mac & cheese and cornbread were on point! I will note that my co-workers really enjoyed their meals and the portions are very big for the $$ amount. I don't have any inclination to return, but will post an update if I do.

Check this place out now. I mean, right now! We went on a Friday night and it was busy, but that didn't matter wait wise. We were greeted immediately when we walked in and told about how long we would wait for a table, then given a drink menu. Staff was very attentive and quick to serve food and drink. Basically, this place is amazing. We will be back to this hidden gem!

Kind of pricey but food was delicious and drinks were strong. Atmosphere is just right for a quiet evening. Will return should I get the inkling. Only down one star because I'm very much a value oriented consumer and I prefer more conservative prices. So take my review for what it's worth.

This place has a special vibe, great ambiance, rock music at the right volume, friendly staff. Food is vast and tasty. I bet you won't be disappointed if you come here. It's also a bar, so nice place to grab a drink and chat with friends.

I really like this place. I'm dying to try the steak, but the meatloaf, crabcakes, fried chicken, and pork-chops are to die for. Drinks are very good as well, my favorite is the old fashioned.

Great bar with a nice selection of whiskey cocktails. Love the atmosphere, very appropriate for DC.

I’ve known Paddy for more than a decade, and his bar is an excellent place for food and drinks. It doesn’t really cater to the traditional 20-something Clarendon drinker — the crowd usually ranges 30s and above. The bartenders take time to get to know you, and everything I've had on the menu has been great — from buffalo chicken wings on a weeknight to, really, any of the brunch dishes. Great atmosphere. Great service. Great food. They’re also willing to host events on occasion, like baby showers and community meet-ups.
