15 Essential Spots for Affordable Eats in San Diego

"Coronado-based Greek restaurant Spiro’s serves Mediterranean options from platters to salads and family-style meals. For example, a salmon platter will run $23 and comes with a choice of rice pilaf or fries, a side Greek salad, pita and tzatziki. Family-style meals feed four people, come with sides, and range from $44 to $55; choose the lamb and beef, or chicken gyro; or beef, lamb, or chicken kabobs. The family-run restaurant also welcomed a La Jolla location in Fall 2020." - Ligaya Malones

Google
Quick stop eatery with a lovely view of downtown San Diego harbor from Coronado ferry landing. The service was friendly. I had a Greek salad with grilled chicken. My husband had the gyro. Salad was light and refreshing. My chicken had great flavor but slightly dry. Husbands gyro meat was delish. We sat inside but there is outdoor seating

Awesome views from patio. Iced Tea was excellent. Had the Beef and Lamb plates. Fries had no seasoning but rice on other was good. Greek salad and dressing was fantastic. Great spot for quick bite.

Upon arrival, saw a few indoor seating available, but there were plenty at the outdoor patio area. Decided to sit inside. Our order was placed at the register. Our dish arrived 10-15 minutes later. There was self serve drinking station. Don't expect fast food service at this place. All staff were attentive in picking up dirty dishes and utensils. The shrimp kabob lacked taste, texture and presentation. Maybe it needed to be grilled a little more longer. Seasoning would have been nice. There was Siracha hot sauce available but didn't feel that adding Siracha sauce would boost the shrimp kabob. Salad and fries were fine. This dish was not worth $22 As for the beef dish, it was odd to see it being served in bowl, separated from the rest of dish. This dish was ok. Nice ambience wether sitting indoor our out.

Today, our 4-person birthday group had 2 guests to make 6 well-wishers total to celebrate our precious Beth's birthday!! The 'birthday girl' chose Spiro's and said that it was her favorite place to eat! ✅️ Each person or group must order and pay accordingly at the front counter, but food selections will be delivered to your table after preparation by the use of numbered table flags corresponding to each order number. There is usually a queue line, depending on the time of day. There are tables out in front, inside the restaurant, and on a large outdoor patio in back. You also have the option to sit at the bar and watch a large-screen TV while you have a beverage or a meal. Larger restaurants offer restrooms for their patrons; however, Spiro's on the Coronado Landing customers are directed outside the eatery establishment where they can avail themselves of the Landing's public toilet facilities nearby. Only two of our group had eaten at Spiro's, so they ordered their favorite soup, Avgolemono, but they say it may have been cooked slightly different today. (🤷‍♂️) The 'birthday girl' did say that she thoroughly enjoyed the falafel and the tasty pita chips with her soup while her sister-friend just ordered the soup. Another celebrant enjoyed the fish 'n chips and cole slaw. I also had the excellent fish 'n chips (with sliced tomatoes substituted for the cole slaw)! The other 2 adults enjoyed the picture-perfect fish taco platter and the chicken kabob platter, respectively! Their portion sizes were large so they took to-go boxes home for good eating later! We six each had a fabulous time of fellowship together, and we will certainly return as time and good fortune permits. I had iced tea which was very refreshing! Kudos to the staff and the management of such a lovely place, catering to locals and visitors alike! ✔️💯🔥😁

Google
Best ice tea! Delicious spanakopita and flaming cheese, no bathroom but walk across street for common space bathroom, very nice outdoor eating covered with umbrellas with great water view lots to see

Google
Nice little place on the bay. The lamb kabob platter was large, and the portion of fried fish was two slab! The homemade tarter sauce was excellent. Nice breeze coming off the water was great! Would definitely try the gyros next time.

Google
Indoor & outdoor seating with water view. Food comes fast. Ordered spanakopita & side of falafel. Falafel nice fully bean with spices without fillers.

Yelp
I went at lunchtime and there was no wait. The inside is clean and inviting there is plenty of seating inside and out. I got the gyro sandwich combo, which is the sandwich 5/5 and fries 1/5 or rice and a drink. The sandwich is plenty and was very tasty, the fries were not crispy. I will definitely go back for a gyro, but I can't recommend the fries.

Yelp
Food: Lamb and Beef Gyro Platter (8/10) - A good shareable portion. The salad was tasty and the pitas were soft. The meats were good with the tzatziki sauce. Chicken Gyro Platter (6/10) - A little biased because I ended up not liking how the chicken tasted? But it's probably more of a me thing and my preference. It wasn't cooked wrong or anything. Everything else paired with it on the plate was good and it's such a good portioned plate. Fish and Chips (7.5/10) - Very classic and basic plate but still good. The fish came out crispy and warm and tasted good with lemon on top. The fries had a lot of potato and were also good. Service: We ordered at the register, paid and sat down with a number. The service is nice, they're generally straightforward and nice people. Ambiance: It's pretty lively on weekends and nearing sunset as well because the water view is nice. I prefer outdoor seating for the views and vibes. It just feels nice outside.

Yelp
Excellent food and service I would happily recommend this establishment to anyone visiting Coronado

Yelp
Fast service with a gorgeous view! I have been coming here for over ten years. I almost always get the Lamb-Beef Gyro Sandwich, a classic. If you really like tzatziki sauce I suggest asking for extra. You can see from my photo that most of it comes on the bottom of the gyro and I prefer to drizzle a bit more on the meat. There is plenty of meat and I never leave hungry. We usually sit on the outdoor patio or take the food to go and have a picnic on the grass at the ferry landing. The prices are reasonable considering the location and I just love the view of the skyline and the harbor!

Yelp
Stopped by for a warm meal after taking our bikes on the ferry on a windy day. Boy were we happy to see the inviting patio with a view and HEATERS! So spacious and plenty of space for two bikes. I was given an estimated wait of 10-15 minutes for my food but it came within probably 5 minutes. So quick! The french fries were nice and crisp. Salad was a little too dressed for my taste so I should've ordered dressing on the side. Portion sizes were fair. Beer options were just what we needed for a quick bite. Pricing a little steep for what we got, but with the space, nice service, and being Coronado - about what you'd expect.

Yelp
I enjoyed my visit. I had the falafel platter and a falafel appetizer. I guess I knew what to expect. I also didn't want the rice so doubled on the salad instead of rice and fries. I appreciate the service. Food came out quickly. Their selection of drinks wasn't to bad. They also had a local beer on tap that want to bad. Salad was good. It comes with their house dressing tomatoes lettuce onion and feta. The falafels were moist and ready texture. Baked and not a greasy fried falafel. The view is good from the patio of the board walk and bay. But their are flies and birds so we say inside which the flies and birds can also come inside. Someone else got the tacos and another the beef kabobs both nice portions and no complaints for the price. I would go back
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered a chicken kabob platter to go for two people. The service is amazing, fast, and the staff are so sweet! They really know what's popular or what to try and the food is always delicious. We really like the fries over the rice, and the side salad is a delicious classic Greek salad. The platters are large portions and it a great meal to split. The ambiance in the restaurant is laid back and they have a nice outdoor section that overlooks the bay. We'll definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Refreshing meal over looking the water front. The food was prepared fine, nothing that was remember fully spectacular but still good. You order at the counter and take a number, the patio along the water. There is seating in side or outside on a shaded patio, the patio has plenty of space and seating making it the ideal spot to enjoy the sunny San Diego weather. The food came out quickly and without any problems, making the evening an enjoyable one.

Yelp
Well what here took the ferry out from downtown San Diego near the pier took it out to the Coronado beautiful trip just 15 minutes ferry ride only $9 highly recommended I have a lot of little shops but this sounded good to me and it was delicious food service was great I have no complaints whatsoever but give me plenty of hummus when you order the pizza and hummus so I had to take some home which worked out good because I ate it here at home and it was great I will definitely go back
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot for Greek a bite. You order from a monitor, pay, given a number and the food arrives in less than 10 minutes. We got the Lamb Gyro and with a side of more meat on the side. They were super generous with the meat I didn't need more on the side but I do love the season meats. There plenty of tables to choose from. We sat outside under a perfect shady spot. Gyro came out hot and fresh. It was so good I contemplated another. Service was good too. Will be back for the Mediterranean plate next time.

Yelp
Our take-out order was thirty minutes late in being ready. But instead of offering us a seat and a beverage, they just let us stand there and age. We watched as orders flooded in at the counter and very little food emerged from the kitchen. When the order was ready, they checked it thoroughly (appreciated!) but opened the containers so many times that all of the heat escaped. Once home, we found the food was barely even warm, the chicken gyro was bland and chicken kabob was over spiced and everything tasted like it was cooked yesterday. At any price point this would be unacceptable but they charge WAY too much for food this bad.
google avatar

Marilyn G.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice already. On my first time dining in here the food was not to my liking 'coz the Lamb that I got was very dry and the bread was so bland. After 3 months, we saw this place again and decided to give it another chance. We ordered the same thing that I ordered on my first time here to see if there were any changes. We got: * LAMB CHOP PLATTER * LAMB - BEEF GYRO PLATTER I'm so glad that we came back again 'coz on our second visit my LAMB CHOP PLATTER was delicious, not burnt or dry. This time my lamb was Tender, Juicy, and tasty. The LAMB - BEEF GYRO was good, and the Bread was actually good too. I also love their Salad here, it's very light in dressing. Nothing much to say about the service 'coz you order your food first at the counter and they will deliver it to you afterwards and that's it. If you want more, get up, line up again, and order and pay at the counter. They don't bring your water to you 'coz you get it also near the counter. The Cashiers that they have on the front are always friendly .

Yelp
Spiro's has been my "go to" for Greek food for many years. Unfortunately, the last few meals have been disappointing both in taste and portion size. I've made a lot of allowances for the subpar meals, but it's time for me to move on.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
I know not to expect anything close to real fish and chips but this was awful. Chips (French fries) were ok but the fish left a lot to be desired. I ate around the edges but the center mass was a rubbery lump. This was the same cost as fish and chips at Shakespeares Pub which is much much better. Won't be eating here again I'm sorry to say.
google avatar

Yelp
We never really venture out to Coronado, except for the dog beach. I had some work in the area and just thought it would be fun to eat out this way. We came to the pier and just walked around and found Spiro's which has a dog friendly patio that faces the water. You order at the counter and they come and bring it out. Freshly brewed ice tea was great, and just ask for some lemon wedges. I had the delicious and tender baby lamp chops. I order these once in a while and there were really good! Came with rice and salad. Scooter had the gyros plate which he said was decent, a little dry. The view at night is great! Definitely worth checking out. Cako Approves!

Yelp
For my birthday, my coworkers took me out to Spiro's. It's located in Coronado Landing on San Diego Bay. Beautiful views, great food and good service. Since it was lunch, I ordered the Gyro Sandwich and a Space Dust IPA (Elysian Brewing Company). Good portions, delicious and filling.
google avatar

Kelsey L.

Yelp
I love Mediterranean food and spiros is the place! We got takeout and the food was ready reasonably fast -Chicken kebabs were a bit dry though tbh order extra tzatziki
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
The food is delicious! The place doesn't look like much but.. amazing! The Coronado Ferry Landing plaza is full of fun stuff too.
google avatar

Christian A.

Yelp
Amazing food, amazing, friendly, smiling staff, massive portions, highly recommend one of our favorites on the island
google avatar

Brenda F.

Yelp
Highly recommend! The food was great and super quick service. I had the lamb-beef gyro platter. The salad is delicious!!!

Anonymous R.

Yelp
Taste of chicken was fantastic...but we waited over 30 minutes for one salad with two chicken kabobs that cost $32 at noon. Even for Coronado, that's outrageous. Literally $2 per 1" piece of chicken. Had read the reviews ahead of time but honestly was just hungry for something healthy. So many food options on Coronado, skip this one until they offer a lunch special.

Gavin C.

Yelp
Great Gyro Platter, kind staff, and the quickest I've ever received my food. They have cucumber and lemon water for free! Reasonable prices especially for Coronado.

Karen M.

Yelp
Good food, best Falafel crispy crunchy Fafafel on the outside tasty on the inside, have good amount of Taziki sauce, pita bread soft fresh warm and just a tiny bit chewy which I like. Nice view from the patio outside. Umbrella to keep us comfortable out od the midday sun. Kudos to Spiro's in Coronado CA at the Ferry Landing!
google avatar

Abhishek R.

Yelp
This place is busy most of the times and the people at front are rude. I had a to go order and asked the old guy at the cashier to confirm my order and he rolled his eyes. People (like the old man) shouldn't be working at customer facing jobs if they don't know how to treat customers. Their food isn't great either. Sauces are bland and tasteless and they give regular brown ride as sides. Most Greek places I've been to give flavoured Greek rice. I don't recommend this place.
google avatar

Megan D.

Yelp
Lovely Greek Cafe in Coronado! My daughter & I had the salmon plate with an added filet mignon kabob. We also had the avgolemono soup. Which leads me to the reason of 4 stars given vs 5 stars. The soup was very watery. I was so excited about seeing avgolemono on the menu but felt disappointed that it was watery. Also I was hoping for hummus to come with the salmon plate but it didn't. I wasn't going to stand in another line for hummus, after getting our food. So that was my bad. But otherwise it was a wonderful experience sitting outside with our goldendoodle! Great staff I must say! Super friendly and hard working! I can't wait to try other menu items!
google avatar

Bob R.

Yelp
Although the view for from this restaurant outdoors overlooking downtown San Diego is beautiful, the food has a little bit to be desired. The gyro plate was had plenty of food but lacked some flavor. Wanted to order a combo plate but no such thing exists at the restaurant so I had to order a side of chicken kabob for $8 and which was just four very small pieces of chicken.. for $60 for this plate with two sodas I expected more but Got less. So if you're just looking for you, great place to go with a view here it is . If you're looking for value, not a place to go
google avatar

Sue B.

Yelp
The assistant manager at crown city hotel recommended this place for lunch. We enjoy Mediterranean food and this place did not disappoint. The portions are quite large so next time we would share a meal. It's nice because you order at the counter and the food is brought out to you. The staff members are nice and so are the views.
google avatar

Falcon P.

Yelp
Great location with San Diego view in the background. ( if you sit outside) . Super friendly towards dogs and overall chill atmosphere. It semi self serving set up. You order upfront and they bring food to your table. Food was better than OK. We had Avgolemono Soup, Chicken Kebab and Gyro Platter. All portions were generous, kebab was a la carte and for 7$ ( incl tax) was semi disappointing. 4 small pieces and few were really chewy. Another element that's was not in their favor - Pigeons!!! They are so well trained to help themselves that they really not intimidated by humans. Overall they attract plenty of people to keep them busy and their menu is pretty extensive. Would come back but without super high expectation.

Marc A. P.

Yelp
Great food, fantastic location, so-so parking on the weekends and after work. Great lunch spot though for gyros
google avatar

Carlo G.

Yelp
Great food. The Gyro meat was delicious and cooked just right. And if that's not enough, the view on the patio is to die for.
google avatar

Paula C.

Yelp
This place is in a nice location, right next to the water, but the food is just ok. I ordered the chicken Gyro which, I don't think was what I got. The chicken was bland and dry and everything else wasn't super great. Equivalent to Mediterranean fast food and nothing really stands out here. The employees are always friendly and helpful but the food isn't great. I've been here a few times, and it's ok for a light meal with a great view.

Isabelle F.

Yelp
The foods good but I do not like the service (from the cashier). Last time I was forced to leave a tip when I didn't have any table service. Yes, I believe in tipping and I tipped other employees that day, but I shouldn't be forced to leave a tip just because the company wants me to. Not coming back.
google avatar

Dawn B.

Yelp
Oh my goodness this place deserves every ounce of recognition it gets, we ordered the gyro and two drinks. We were really surprised by the value for the price. The gyro meat is perfect and so is the sauce. My husband devoured the gyro so Fast I almost didn't get a bite. The efficiency here with service is absolutely top notch and despite it being very busy there's a spot almost everywhere.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Mmmm! Their gyros are bomb! I always get the lamb beef gyro, no onions. Their tzatziki sauce is really good. You can get a meal with a gyro, fountain drink (free refills since you get it yourself), and fries or salad for a $6 upgrade. It's worth it. The outside patio is really nice. Service is good . they're always busy, so the food can take a little while, but if you just enjoy the atmosphere with the live band that plays just outside the patio, the wait doesn't seem so bad. The spanikopita is really tasty but not worth it for $9.95. It's a standard sized square, but I'd price it at $7 or $8. But it's primo pricey because it's right by the water in Coronado. I haven't tried their other stuff, but the fish or shrimp tacos and platters look great. If you like gyros with a good amount of meat, big chunks of tomato and thick chewy pita wrap, check them out! Enjoy the fresh air!
google avatar

Brock B.

Yelp
price a little steep. staff was typical. not super busy on a tuesday night which was nice and the food came out quickly. if there were more food on the plate there would be more stars on the post.
google avatar

Jessica X.

Yelp
Sun is up, roller skates on, wind in my hair, and only good vibes around here. Met up with friends to ride and find a yummy place to fill our belly's up. Our friend suggested this place and said only good things. We got our own gyros calamari's, and a beer or two. Gyros were so good, wished we got more sauce, and the calamari was good but I like mine crunchy at times. Otherwise good space, cute patio in the back for more seating and seems to be busy usually. Cute little place. Order in front and find a seat after. Will come again when we skate here.

Nancy G.

Yelp
We ate there yesterday for lunch. The food was good - so no complaints there. But when I tried to use my gift card (it was one of those from Costco that includes many local restaurants, including Spiros!), they said their machine they use for those cards was broken!! So incredibly disappointing! It made me wonder if it's been "broken" for a long time and they're just staying part of that card group as a marketing tool to get people in the door!!
google avatar

Mitch D.

Yelp
Im a spiros kabob addict. Need some K-A (kabobs anonymous) meetings to get me off the kabobs. Maybe one day ill try the gyro
google avatar

Fredrick Y.

Yelp
Maile was our hostess and she greeted us with a smile and "May I help you" when we walked in the door

Dahlia A.

Yelp
I have to admit I've always underestimated this place. Today, I walked in and ordered their lentil soup with pita bread after a long day at the bay and it was absolutely delicious. The service was fast and the staff was polite and nice. It's the perfect place to stop by to grab a bite after a long day or for lunch. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Bert G.

Yelp
For my first visit to this Greek restaurant I ordered fish and chips, not exactly their specialty, but listed on the Local Favorites menu. So, I decided not to review it, and order Greek food next time. Yep, that's the ticket. I ordered the Lamb & Beef Gyro ($15.50), a combo meal which consisted of the $10.95 gyro, plus french fries and an unlimited self-serve soft drink for the extra $5.00. The gyro was delicious, stuffed with perfectly spiced lamb and beef, white sauce, tomato, and onion. I was very pleased with the generous portion of tender meat, and the pita bread was fresh, warm and soft. The fries were great, too, and a generous portion as well. So, skip the local favorites and order Greek. You won't be disappointed.

Chris J.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is really good with ample portions. My chicken kabob plate came with two skewers of chicken. Along with a tasty salad with olives, feta, pepperoncini, cucumbers, tomatoes, and rice, and plenty of pita bread. It is hard to beat this place for good Greek food. Also, a very nice patio with comfortable seating. We will be back.
google avatar

Arabelle M.

Yelp
Hubby and I have always wanted to try this place out. Finally, we were able to try their food earlier today. Opted for their calamari appetizer and Gyro plate. Yummy, reasonably priced, and nice view. Staff were really nice. Highly recommend this spot if you're around Coronado Ferry Landing area.

Sandy S.

Yelp
I had Spiros catering for my husband's Celebration of Life reception at the VFW in Corondo! From first contact they were professional, efficient and knowledgeable. They set up when requested, did what we had discussed, the food was warm and very delicious!!! I would highly recommend them!!!

Kevin M.

Yelp
Always good food, BUT only three falafels in a falafel platter??? What's with that? You get two big skewers of chicken, why punish the vegetarians?
google avatar

Zachary H.

Yelp
Pretty alright Greek plate. I'd go back. I thought the kebab plate with salad could feed 3! Good value.
google avatar

Monty D.

Yelp
Spiro's Greek Café, located at the Landing, was easy to find and easy to get around in. They have 2 entrances, indoor seating and patio seating. On a busy weekend, they made restaurant dining easy, and good. Their service was fast and efficient. We had a few simple requests with our order, and they accommodated them without an issue. I really liked their physical set up, it was easy to maneuver around other customers. As you may expect, this is casual dining. It has plenty of shaded seating (which I like in a beach environment). The Lamb Gyro was tasty; while quite flavorful there wasn't anything particularly strong in the flavor palette. The meat was thicker than the usual, but it was moist and tender to the bite. The flavor was good, but nothing particularly stood out. The tzatziki sauce was also mild, but still flavorful. The meat and sauce was a good pairing. There were ample portions. The Greek salad was fresh. Their salad dressing was good, again not particularly outstanding in any one element, but good none-the-less. The dressing did make a great dipping sauce with the pita triangles. This is an interesting noteworthy detail: they use 2 different types of onions. They use a mild onion for the gyro and a pungent onion for the salad. Both onions work well with their respective dishes.

Yelp
It took over 30 min to get our food. I ordered the fish taco plate. Over cooked. It was a brick. My wife ordered the Gyros platter. The meat was dried out. The salad was wilted. It looked like something you'd get from 7/11. Over $43 for this food. Save your money and time! Go somewhere else!!
