The Best Places to Drink Along Malt Row in Ravenswood | Eater Chicago

"Spiteful Brewing uses its taproom to test beers before larger rollouts, so every visit you’ll find new varieties you won’t be able to taste anywhere else, like Turnstyle Hopper, an experimental hazy IPA brewed with different hops each time. The heated patio is a perfect place to sip one of their refreshing brews like Bleacher Bum blonde ale with just a hint of peach or the crisp and hoppy Alley Time pale ale." - Sam Nelson

Where to Drink Outdoors in Lincoln Square, Ravenswood, and North Center | Eater Chicago

"The covered picnic tables at Ravenswood’s Spiteful Brewing make a perfect place to sip a summery brew like a well-balanced radler made with tangerine soda or Alley Time pale ale (it’s named for Chicagoans’ love of alley barbecues in the summer). The garage doors of the dog-friendly space open on nice days, letting in fresh air for drinkers who prefer to have their beers inside." - Sam Nelson

Visited May 2024. Nice little brewery. Had a couple of beers here which was quite nice! Nice location by the street including a outdoor seating. I was here mid day relatively early so it was i quiet day when I was there. This was a short stay on my way to Half Acre (nabours) but would love to check out some more of their beers next time in Chicago!

Spiteful Brewing is a great spot to grab a drink and hang out. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with a solid selection of beers to choose from. If you’re hungry, they have a few options to snack on. Best of all, it’s dog-friendly, so you can bring your pup along while you enjoy the vibes. Definitely worth a visit!

Spiteful Brewing is stop #4 on my 2025 Chicago Brewery Exploration. This place is buzzing with energy—clearly a popular hangout. They’ve got a wide selection of IPAs, which made me happy, plus some English-style offerings for a nice change of pace. Everything I sampled was well-made and flavorful. The space has a casual, unpretentious vibe that makes it easy to settle in and enjoy the lineup. Another strong entry in Chicago’s impressive brewery scene.

Google
Had their beers at bars and restaurants but it was nice to visit the actual tap room. Brews and vibes are good; staff not so much. You can say they are "spiteful," no pun intended. Asked whether or not they are part of the Illinois Craft Brewers Guild and [Summer] Passport and one of the fellas let us know that they are not on good terms with ICBG, noting a one-way street sort of deal (Thanks for the info?). This spot was actually on the ICBG/Illinois Beer website. Anyway, besides all this, customers are nice and I like how they have a collab with Pequod's Pizza.

Google
We managed to visit on a beautiful October afternoon, so we were able to take advantage of the (dog-friendly) patio area. Very nice neighborhood atmosphere, and a great selection of beer from light to dark and in between. Nice amount of space if you need to sit inside. Friendly staff too --- definitely plan on visiting again!

Google
Great brewery with an awesome taproom. Plenty of outdoor seating for warm days too! Every beer I've tried here has been outstanding.

Google
Spiteful Brewing Tap room is a relaxed, comfortable space with a wide variety of beers (to drink on premises or take away.) I had the vienna lager and an IPA. Both were super tasty. My friends and I shared a large pretzel served piping hot with generous dollop of mustard. I am excited to go again soon.

Google
Kaybee is the best! My first time coming I had no idea what beer to order, but Kaybee made great suggestions and I got to sample. She’s so friendly and and super helpful when I came another time with my friend in a wheelchair. This brewery had a cool neighborhood vibe, well it’s literally in the middle of a neighborhood lol. Nice indoor and outdoor seating and awesome when they have Kite String Catina pop up for vegan nachos! Highly recommend and you’ll have a great experience if Kaybee or Brent is there, he was so friendly too!

Yelp
Visited for the first time and it's a great place to meet friends and grab a beer. Service is top notch and the staff knows their product.

Yelp
This place has great beers, and a few really great employees. But the ginger-adjacent traditionally good-looking blonde guy who acts like he's in charge is a surly ass. If you ask for a recommendation, he only ever sells the highest ABV IPAs, he's short with customers, would clearly prefer you'd not come by, resents the second pint you order, and today threw a little tantrum over being scheduled on "date night." Bro, the ENTIRE WORLD is designed to accommodate you, you deserve NOTHING. He makes me regret having come in EVERY TIME he's here. Otherwise, the place is clean, the music is pleasant and quiet enough to chat over, and the pretzel tasty (avoid the "cheese" tho).

Yelp
Here is yet another brewery. It's one of the not as known of the craft breweries around here. Spiteful has some cans available in beer and liquor stores. Getting to the actual taproom has the advantage of being able to try stuff you can't get anywhere else. The place isn't that big and parking sucks but they have a big selection on tap and the prices are good. After checking out a few other local craft breweries around here, we came here and tried a few. It has a kind of limited amount on tap but it's a pretty small place. There's still a pretty good variety. It's about $7 a pint. They have fruity, hoppy, and more on tap. Among these, Turnstile Hopper so far is my favorite. It's a hazy IPA. This has a hoppy taste and is 6% ABV so it's stronger than many. Here they don't have food besides chips. It's $1 a bag, crappy choices. They do allow outside food and have some delivery partners. Good local brewery. It's on Balmoral close to Half Acre, yet another one. Try some beers from both of these.

Yelp
This is a great local craft beers. I love their locale. Specially summer with benches outside and locals enjoying their beers and time.

Yelp
Really great local brewery!! Awesome variety, and I enjoyed both the bleacher bum and Hefeweizen that I tried!! I needed a snack when I visited and although I wish they had more food options, the honey mustard pretzels we got were really yummy and a good size! Our pup really enjoyed that dogs are allowed both on the patio and inside so he could enjoy the air conditioning. We will definitely be back for a beer after puppy classes at Urban Pooch next door in the future!! Service was also friendly and helpful!

Yelp
Hands down one of the best breweries in the city of Chicago this place overall is very good nice location and size for a brewery and overall the atmosphere was excellent there's nothing to complain here in the several beers I had were top quality and the people here seem real professional not over served and drunk.

Yelp
Pros: the place is clean and the staff was pretty attentive and nice. I think it's a decent place to grab a beer and move along. Dog friendly. Cons: there is no real food. They sell brats for 8 dollars a pop. They are absolutely terrible. The brat is bad, bread is meh and the condiments are yellow mustard and ketchup. All let the photos do the talking. The lager. Granted it was my choice to get the lager and the taste wasn't the best and it seemed to lack flavor. From the photo you can see how bad the color of it is. The taste was not far off. I have had other beers by them so I know they have decent beer, but not this one. The parking is a hot mess. Prepare to walk some. The only options for tips during payment start with 20 percent being the lowest. I am fine supporting a business and understand the impact the pandemic has had but no need to get greedy.

Yelp
Dog friendly picnic area and indoor/outdoor bar area. In a quiet neighborhood away from busy streets

Yelp
Great space with a chill little dog-friendly patio to enjoy in nicer weather while sipping one of their many tasty cold brews.
google avatar

Christina P.

Yelp
Spiteful Brewing Tap Room is such a nice little spot to enjoy the warm weather. There's a nice outdoor patio with lots of seating and in the warm weather they'll open up the doors to the Tap Room so you can pretty much enjoy the nice weather anywhere. There's quite the selection of beers here and something for everyone! The staff were super friendly and helpful! Gonna add this to my rotation of places to come to when the weather is nice!
google avatar

Yelp
Really love this brewery! The decor inside is nothing crazy but the atmosphere is really welcoming! The music is punk/pop punk music and when your sitting there it's just a really cool place to hang out! There is a wide variety or beer and everything is pretty reasonably priced. Only thing I hope is that they start to have their own food! Can't wait to return!
google avatar

Yelp
I had no idea this place was here, but thanks to a friend now I do! We were looking for a place to just hang out and have some drinks, and some friends that live near here suggested it. It was quite busy when we got there, we wanted a table outside but there was a wait for those so we got a nice table inside. It was loud, made it a little difficult to talk, but as it calmed down it got better. They have a solid selection of beers, I really enjoyed the tangerine radler (honorable mention to the bleacher bum). Service was pretty good, maybe a little sparse when it was peak busy but I never really sat with an empty beer. The only food they sell is chips and popcorn, but you can easily bring in your own food or get some delivered (they will provide you with utensils and napkins, which is nice). As others have mentioned, they are dog friendly (both outside and inside). One thing I really appreciated was the staff attentiveness to an (almost) incident. My friends and I were sitting at our table, minding our own business, when a (slightly intoxicated) man walks up to our table, complaining about how brewery staff asked him to turn his music down an how they were racist (among other choice descriptors). We all just kind of nodded, hoping he would leave. But then he kept talking/complaining, and kept coming back. The brewery staff picked up on it pretty quickly and talked to him. He came back later, then complaining that the staff yelled at him and they were racist, and the staff came over right away to get him to stop. They also apologized numerous times throughout the rest of the night. I very much appreciated they were paying attention, it would have been easy to ignore but they did a good job of staying on top of it. I will definitely be back, for the beers, for the ambiance, and for the great staff!

Yelp
I do enjoy coming to Spiteful, especially during the summer months where they have the outdoor patio and the shutters open. It's a great space to hang out. I especially like the fact you can bring your well-behaved dog. My dog loves this place and frequently leads me here when we're on a walk. The beer is good and I've always had good interactions with the staff. I had to talk away a couple of stars though because of the inconsistency with open hours. I've come by on a random Saturday night and found they closed early. Recently they've not been open Friday evenings for private events. I get a private event is good revenue, but I'm going to stop making plans to meet friends here because you can't guarantee its going to be open. I'd be here more often if I knew for sure they'd be open.
google avatar

Brian T.

Yelp
Dog friendly patio as well as inside. Patio is covered and has heat lamps. Local craft brew with a wide variety of styles and seasonal favorites. Hidden gem with the locals. Come check them out and maybe take some of their barrel aged darker beers home. They offer snacks like chips and bratwurst from friday-sunday. Outside food is welcome. Only thing missing is probably music outside. Cheers

Yelp
We whiled away a Sunday Funday afternoon in here one day, and it was a LOT OF FUN! I quaffed several of their Gose beers - very light and refreshing. We'll definitely be back to this taproom, right in our neighborhood!

Yelp
Great place! Love all the artwork and theme to this brewery. Upon the first visit there was a ton of stuff you can see all around the taproom. It was around the holidays so I'm not sure it was a good way to judge the crowd, but we were surprised people were out and about. Lots of seating here, just go up to the bar to order your drinks. Staff were super friendly and made sure we were served. Didn't really ask them for recommendations since we just dive right in. Pups are welcome here. It's a very low key and relaxed ambiance here great place to catch up with a friend and or celebrate a birthday. As far as the beers go, I was impressed by their IPAs and selection. Looks like they experiment some too, but granted we were there on a holiday weekend/day I wasn't about to go through all of them a the time (even though I really wished I could).
google avatar

Yelp
Very cool brewery to check out. Beer selection is excellent and their service is friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Super friendly staff and cute little place. On the day of my visit my friend and I sat outside. We both had the double ipa which had a nice bite. We only tried the one kind because the other one I had wanted to try was tapped out.

Yelp
Last review of 2018 and I'm raising a glass to Spiteful Brewing. The location is a little off the beaten path, but this just adds to its neighborhoody charm. On a Sunday night, it wasn't too busy but my friend and I still opted to sit up at the bar. You pretty much have to flag someone down for service but once you get your beer order in, they're quick. I tried taster sizes of the Gold Coast Problems (witbier), Klutzy Buffoon (saison), and God Damn Pigeon Porter. My favorite was the saison. In addition to beer, I noticed they have a few snacks listed on their menu, but you can also order in food or bring your own. Pretty cool they allow dogs too. Glad I checked this one out. Cheers!

Yelp
The beer here is good. I like to drink beer. They have sports on TVs. I like watching sports. I pet a dog after eating an edible.

Yelp
On your local beer tour in Chicago, Spiteful Brewing taproom is a must visit. Having bought many Spiteful beers from the local Binny's, I was very happy to finally get a chance to visit the taproom. On my Friday night visit, the taproom was busy but not packed. There were a good mix of people, both from the local neighborhood or from somewhere around the city. The taproom is also great because they are dog friendly! While they don't have food, with the exception of a cheese plate with crackers, it seems as though you can bring your own snacks as I saw that many people had done. The draft list is rich with an excellent selection and variety of beers across different styles. It is nice that they offer 5 oz sizes so you can sample a few different beers with friends. Having a penchant for IPAs, my favorites had to be 'Working for the Weekend', which I've had the canned version before, and 'Messenger Double IPA', which was very floral and flavorful. The Spiteful Brewing taproom is an excellent place to visit for some great local brews. The vibe here is local and friendly, where you can bring your friends and dogs to chill with on a Friday night. It is my hope that they expand many of their beers on draft out for purchase because they make some really great beer.

Yelp
I wish I lived in Chicago so I could go here more often. Great beer, friendly staff, friendly dogs and nice space. Be sure to try a bag of the pretzel crack too.
google avatar

Yelp
Sheesh. I mean sheesh so love this place. Local but would drive here too. Just crazy good beer and vibes. Sigh. You will love it too. I really think.
google avatar

Yelp
I am glad that I found out about it. It's my neighborhood. I love the tap room ambiance, open space, welcoming, cozy, nice staff and dog friendly. I am IPA, Pale Ale drinker. I tasted few. I like the Molly's By Day IPA and Ally time. I will come back soon. Beer: great Ambiance: great Service: great Price: reasonable

Yelp
Might have found my new favorite brewery! It is a nice open space that has large windows that are open on nice days and make the whole place feel like a patio. They don't have food but you can order in, and there was actually an independent catering company that was serving Mac n' cheese the day I was there- that was also delicious! Service was beyond nice, and the beer was DELICIOUS! ~some of the best from a microbrewery I've had. The standout was the "Stubborn Sally" and "Working for the Weekend." Whether you are a pale ale fan, an IPA fan, or like something different like a Radler, Spiteful has something for you.
google avatar

Grant A.

Yelp
Came Friday night of Memorial Day weekend. Was initially just looking for Half Acre after I left Half Acres taproom I came here. Pretty neat you have 2 breweries so close to each other! Chill vibes. Some folks bring the doggos in to. Has like a garage door so you get a nice breeze coming in when the weather is nice. I've had their Pigeon Porter a bunch. The day I drank here had a variation didn't know existed the Peanut Butter version. Had a good not overpowering peanut butter taste and good malt background.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
This little off the beaten path taproom is a total gem. Having never been here before my fiancé and I really wanted to get a feel for what kind of beers they offer so we ordered a flight. We got the Diggable IPA (my personal favorite), Working for the weekend double IPA, god damn pigeon porter (my first porter) and Networking is for wieners. Some of the best beers I've had lately. There wasn't one we didn't love. And for never having a porter before, I'm a fan, of this one at least. They don't serve actual food food but they do offer a cheese trio with some crackers for an additional charge. The crackers come in a little baggy and the cheeses on a prepackaged paper board and at first I was like oh yay.. grocery store quality cheese squares suctioned in plastic. But to be honest.. they were really good cheeses lol. There was one with a truffle taste that we couldn't stop eating. And it was such a perfect snack to go along with all their beers. I ended up just putting the crackers on the board myself. So kudos to them on keeping it simple yet tasty. You order at the bar which is standard at taprooms. I found humor in the artwork and loved the overall vibe of this place. No fancy thrills, just good beer. We also found free parking right in front. Can't beat all that in a bag of potato chips. We will be back for sure.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Cute, small brewery with good beers. It's decor and ambiance is like your typical brewery. High tops and regular tables and bar seating. You can small pours and create a flight or just go for a pint. You order at the bar. It's laid back and chill. And it's quieter than some of the other breweries. Great place to kick back with some friends and have a few beers. My personal fav was the wheat beer. Very tasty! And lots of other good beer choices too.
google avatar

Vincent K.

Yelp
They major in IPAs and that's my favorite so yeah 5 stars. Went with the arrogant Aaron and the stubborn Sally and I feel good dammit. Clean environment, 2 nice dartboards, and clean artwork. It is a bit secluded but half acre is next door and the quiet neighborhood is kinda nice.
google avatar

Crusty C.

Yelp
The beer is good and the taproom is nice/small. The staff has a hard time keeping up though. They do not really have a system in place and they are all over, no real direction. Which results in long periods of time between drinks. No food options, just bratwursts....which are "meh". Outside seating is like Hunger Games to get a table. Patio is usually overrun by dogs as well. Half Acre taproom a block down is a better option.
google avatar

Alyssa C.

Yelp
While walking my dog last week, I realized a new brewery opened up down the street from my house! Craft beer at walking distance?! COUNT ME IN! I walked in at 3:45 and the place was already pretty full. Since I was alone, I managed to snag a seat at the bar. Service was friendly, and both bartenders knew their beer language well. I tried 3 different beers because they offer all their beers on tap in 5oz sizes. First the Alley Time Pale Ale- light, crisp, refreshing, and a slight hoppy-ness at the finish. Pale Ale drinkers: this one's a winner. Second the Working for the Weekend Double IPA- so much IPA hop and flavor but not as full and heavy as your usual double IPA. Of all the double IPA beers I have tried (and that's a lot because I love a hoppy, bodied IPA) this is definitely in my top 3! Third the God Damn Pigeon Porter- I am so picky about porters, so much I think it's safe to say I only like a handful of the porters I have tried... this beer falls into that handful!! Sooo smooth with such a nice flavor from start to finish. This one could be dangerous at 8.2% ABV, but worth every sip! I took 2 16oz 4-packs and a 12oz 6-pack to go and with the 3 5oz beers I tried as well my bill was under $50. For local craft beer- I was over the moon about the taste already and now the price as well! A few other beers I wanted to try they were currently sold out of, and I was told it will be a few more weeks until they have growlers to sell their beers on tap to go as well. Overall, the beers are great, the location is great, the interior is clean and modern, the service was friendly and knowledgeable; I was extremely pleased with my experience at Spiteful Brewing! My one recommendation to this place is that if you plan on being as packed as you were today all the time, (which I would imagine you would want to.. the volume of people is speaking for the amazing beer you are serving), you might want to consider having a server to take care of the tables to ensure everyone is being served promptly. Oh! And one more cool thing I forgot to mention! Spiteful Brewing only sells beer, but I saw multiple groups bring their own snacks and even a small party of people brought some pizzas to enjoy with their delicious craft beer. Already excited about my next visit here!!

Melissa R.

Yelp
Awesome brews, great service, and pet friendly ! Great local spot to relax and have a drink. You can bring your own food too. Outdoor area available too. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Paula B.

Yelp
Super chill dog friendly vibe. Flights are 5 ounces each and do not go by the standard, "Choose 4 beers max." Mix and match however many you want but you pay for each drink individually. Great place in the neighborhood
google avatar

K D.

Yelp
5 plus years ago we were on a tour at Stone Brewery and met a member of Spiteful Brewery who was on the same tour. We were interested about the beer and upon returning to the Chicago area we found it at Binny's and have been enjoying it since. We went to the taproom, 1/20/18, after a LONG wait and we were not disappointed... Service was VERY good and the beer was Great. We enjoyed the following beers which were very good, God Damn Pigeon Porter Working for the Weekend G.F.Y. Stout Well worth the wait. We hope to make the trip to the taproom again.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
A hidden gem I stumbled across upon! Very dog friendly. They let my pup come inside. Water available for my pup. Even better is that their beer is amazing. Def recommended this place!
google avatar

Aimee M.

Yelp
If you can find the perfect weather day (Mid July, not so hot) If you can find the perfect reason (day drinking and work sux) If you can find the perfect crew (I luv my girlfriends). Then put Spiteful Brewing on your brewery tour list! Wide open windows....for the perfect weather. Delicious drinks...for the perfect reason. Friendly service, dog friendly, and you can bring food in if you want...for your perfect crew. The Spiteful Lager Clementine Radler, only available on site and totally worth the visit!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Real cool taproom up near Andersonville, I've had Spiteful's beers for a while so I was glad to finally visit the actual place. Has your standard taproom design/format, no served food but it's BYO, good selection on tap, and some bottles to go, on warm days, like the day I went, they open the wall/doors, (they slide up kinda like a garage) and it's real nice to just look outside and relax. Servers were cool. It's also right next door to the new Half Acre location, so ideal to do a twofer. Easy street parking on Balmoral Ave. Would definitely return
google avatar

Logan C.

Yelp
Spiteful is one of those breweries I like, but don't love. It is pretty focused on IPAs/Pale ales, which just aren't my favorite. Still they have a nice selection of other styles that are very good. The lager they had on tap was surprisingly flavorful and unique, an accomplishment with a beer that tends to be liked for its lack of flavor. The bartenders were all super nice and very welcoming. On a Saturday afternoon it was busy, but still had plenty of room, and you could easily have a conversation. The space is simple, but well designed.
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
God Damn Pigeon Porter is on point. A ton of options, dark, light and everything in between. I'd recommend having a flight and trying to find the one you like best. Dog friendly tap room, very friendly staff. It just beer so eat before you head over. Had a great time I'll be back.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
This brewery is pretty large and generally crowded but not nearly as crowded at Half Acre next store. The bartenders were nice but did have a bit of the "beer snob" attitude. I ordered an IPA and a Pale Ale and thought they were good... not quite great, but solid. There were at least eight dogs there which was a conversation started often and people were really nice to one another. A ramen place was serving food the day I was there and seemed to be a big hit. I would definitely give it another shot on a nice day, it seems like the front walls can open up.
google avatar

Austin T.

Yelp
Great beer!! The modern vibe is cool especially with the open garage side doors they have. Very clean, and allows dogs as long as they are on a leash. Highly recommend this place to grab a drink or two!
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
Was so excited for these guys to finally open a taproom! It's a gorgeous space up by Balmoral and Damen (near the new Half Acre facility). The bar is made of this beautiful wood with some sweet lighting and there's tons of fun artwork from their bottle labels on the walls. You have to get the God Damn Pigeon Porter while you're there, especially this time of year, but they have an amazing mix of stouts, porters, IPAs, you name it. Lots of seating too so bring your friends! Can't wait to come back. Five stars for days.
google avatar

Giovanni D.

Yelp
A brewery next to a brewery! I love Half Acre but i also love this place. You can bring your own food or order online and deliver it to the tap room. They have few snacks like cheese flight, jerky and kabanos. They have a lot of porters and ipa's. My favorite is the spiteful lager and pale ale.
google avatar

Oscar M.

Yelp
New brewery. Long time waiting for this one. They have amazing IPAs and stouts. The bar is just beautiful, and the staff is super friendly.
google avatar

Kevin D.

Yelp
Beer is great, but staff is hit or miss. Had a great guy taking care of us in the beginning, but the woman that took over was much more interested in flipping tables than human interaction.
google avatar

Ed K.

Yelp
Love Love Love the beers these folks are putting out. There is nothing like fresh bread and there's nothing like a super fresh beer in the glass right in front of you. Hats off to the brewers for making such tasty beers. Spiteful created an inviting and beautiful space that's comfortable now (1/13/18) and will explode when summer finally arrives and the massive garage doors are open to the outdoors. Nice decor. Simple but not barren, with a clean style and one that's reflective of the neighborhood. The staff has been very friendly and knowledgeable of their products. Good interactions had with all of the staff. This is my forth visit and at four various times. Craft beer drinkers like me, are so thankful for the tap room movement. This area started with breweries/tap rooms in the Ravenswood corridor. Fortunately, it has spread north and west into this territory. Parking is easy. It's really worth your time to check this place out.
