An Eater’s Guide to the Best Food and Wine in Idaho’s Snake River Valley | Eater

"An offbeat, experimental producer where the tasting-room vibe can include Spaghetti Westerns on TV and punk-tinged music; the winemaker works with locally grown fruit, rarely repeats vintages, and finishes wines in concrete eggs and sandstone vessels as well as oak." - Amanda Gabriele

Google
Such a fun winery down in Garden City! Huge space - plenty of comfy indoor and outdoor seating. Huge variety on the wine list: bubbles, whites and reds (from light to bold) - they have something for everyone. I love how they are making wine fun and approachable for everyone. They source grapes from Idaho and a few other places. They are doing a lot of fun things on the production side from traditional oak barrels to clay amphora to sandstone and concrete. Highly recommend stopping here for a tasting or a drink or buying a couple bottles or cases 🍷 they also have wine in cans for enjoying outside 🚣🏼‍♀️🌊🏖️

Love the atmosphere here! Enjoyed a red wine flight! The staff/owners are very friendly! You won’t regret stopping by to sit and taste some wine! No better way to spend a Friday afternoon!!

Google
I absolutely love this place! All the wine is great and they explain their process in how they make it which is super cool. Also it is a really cozy vibe inside so we come here to study and do laptop work and it's the perfect space for it.

Google
Visiting Boise from out of town and had a great afternoon at Split Rail. Great patio, great service, great wine. Offer charcuterie/other snacks and tastings/flights. Gorgeous space, Definitely worth a visit.

Google
Brian was very knowledgeable and friendly. We tried the flight and knock off one flight price when buy 2 bottles of wine. We liked the syrah dry rose from 5 we sampled best. The bottle of wine cost $20 per bottle.

Google
Fantastic place to explore unique blends and uncommon variety. The staff is knowledgeable and incredibly personable. This is my new favorite and should be yours too! 🩷

Google
I consider split rail to be the best Idaho winery. Wines are made with grapes from Washington and The Snake River Valley, and Jed the winemakers style is very unique. Wines made in giant barrels and amphoras and ceramic eggs, and different styles like Petillant Naturel, in addition to traditional wines. He makes crazy concoctions and huge reds! A must visit winery!

Google
Great hangout. Wine was good. Patio was awesome. Server by by herself and still kept up and was very friendly. I’ll be back. Just wish the patio had cornhole

Yelp
We were so excited that we found the Split Rail tasting room! We sadly did not get the name of the friendly guy who let us through both of our tastings, but he was invaluable. He even let us see a wine book so my husband could check out maps, as he is obsessed with where and likes to see the exact region grapes are being grown. My husband tasted three of their whites: the dry rose, Gris Gris, and the exploding mirror Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was his favorite, but that was no surprise because he loves his Chardonnay. My husband even bought one of their T-shirts because they were so soft and had an incredible buffalo on the front. I tried the usual tasting of five of their wines, because I don't discriminate regarding alcohol. The first one was called White Noise. It was sparkling, but not many bubbles, so my husband even enjoyed it. We liked it so much we took a bottle of it home. This label could also be a teacher, especially for those who remember the white noise from the TV. The next tasting for me was the Grenache dry rosé. The third tasting was called Burn, and it was so good that we brought home a bottle of it too. Burn is a light, and it is too easy to drink red. I don't remember what type of red wine my fourth one was, but it has a deer face with antlers on the bottle, on a sidenote, that should also be on a T-shirt. It was fuller and smoother. Last but not least, to my taste, was the Cab. It was full-bodied and bold. If you are in the area and want to host an event, they have different rooms that you can rent for your party. They let us step into the barrel room for a picture, and since it was really cold, I was very happy. If we ever make it back to Boise, we will definitely make a stop at Split Rail Winery.

Yelp
I reserved the smaller private room for a gathering of amazing women, and told Split Rail I would bring my own napkins, coasters, and plates for the charcuterie I'd ordered. I bought a bottle of their Damn! red wine, which lived up to the name, a bottle of their chardonnay which is light and delicious, and a bottle of their bubbles. Amy was our Split Rail associate, who went above and beyond to make our group of nine women comfortable. There was even a chalk sign waiting for us that said "Celebrating Amazing Women!". Thank you Split Rail Winery!

Yelp
Not my favorite winery that we went to. I wasn't a fan of the space or the vibe. It seemed to be seeking a specific clientele, which was not me at all. We did the guided flight and the server would come over to pour each wine. I did appreciate the descriptions of the wine that were on the wine list. They were very tongue-in-cheek. Overall, the wine was ok. The space was ok. The service was friendly and quick. But the winery overall was forgettable for me.

Yelp
Great wine!! Really strange labels. The Syrah was my favorite, but the label was so strange I would not be able to get it for friends or show it off.

Julie S.

Yelp
This winery is truly a gem! Great ambiance, wonderful staff and outstanding wine. The interior is so clean and inviting- I prefer Split Rail Winery over other local choices based on wine quality, cleanliness, interior design, and the owner is so friendly and welcoming!

Yelp
what a disappointment. this is what happens when you go corporate and forget about where you started. I couldn't wait to try the new split rail on chinden. we have been going to the old location for years, so it was a long time coming waiting for them to expand away from the freezing cold warehouse they used to serve in. this new location is whatever. it's a concrete hole with metal chairs and a a very "hip" atmosphere. I feel like i'm in brooklyn and not on chinden blvd in boise, idaho. i guess they have to pay for the new digs somehow. the prices are absolutely outrageous. we chose the "guided flight" for $18. they come out to your table with a few bottles of wine and give you a measured tiny 1 oz pour of each of their wines. they even have the stoppers on there to make sure you don't get an extra drop. all the wines this year were tasteless and disappointing. this is not an estate winery. the grapes are grown in all different places and they process it there. I didn't like any of them. no flavor or body whatsoever. i couldn't believe how awful they all were. nothing stood out from that entire list. a few we actually just knocked back like a shot to get rid of them. not that you can really taste anything with a 1 oz pour other than wetting your tongue. lastly, they made their parking lot ridiculously small and there is no parking so people have been taking over stagecoach's parking lot across the way which has angered them immensely (with good reason) and they threaten to tow anyone that parks near them. there was actually a guy out there watching people park when we were there. I have no intentions of coming back. I'm sure they will thrive in this new boise though. no personality and high prices. if you want to go to a place where it's just about being cool and not actually enjoying a wine from idaho, you found the right spot! i'll be at stagecoach giving them my money instead.

Yelp
This place was phenomenal. We tasted several amazing wines and I was really blown away by the artistic style of the winemaker. It's a must for anyone who really understands wine and has a taste for creativity!
google avatar

Yelp
Inside out: getting in and out of their parking lot wasn't the most fun, but parking in the back at least has ample room. The place itself inside is well decorated and fun to look at with a decent amount of seating options. The giant wine egg (made of cement) was eggs-cellent fun! The service: friendly and fast, every single person was knowledgeable. They provided lists that had explanations and explained their wine maker, some names, and the descriptions of wines were unique. The wine: we did a tasting and a bottle to split, some were for me and some weren't but all were easy to drink. The person who accompanied me loves wine and tastes all over- they said it was solid and liked almost all they tried. They seemed to have fair prices and the bottle was so fun I put a pothos plant in it and put it in my kitchen. Overall I say hangout here- they have distancing and mask policies that do not detract from a relaxing place!

Yelp
This is definitely one of the coolest and most kid back wineries I've ever been to. The location is super modern and full of flare and w unique decor. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and was able to speak on all of the wines with us. And even let us try a few that weren't included in our tasting upon inquiry. We loved all of the wines, with their unique flavor profiles and labeling and I even took some home. The Tempranillo was a personal favorite of mine and I plan on having my friend who lives in Boise bring me some more! They do ship stateside though, so that's an option! This was a great place to start out a little winery hopping for the day and probably my favorite place we visited in the Garden City district.

Yelp
Love this place. Always great service. A good selection of wines to taste or buy by the glass. Love the wine growler fills (don't forget your punch card). You can find their wines at some of the bigger grocery stores in the area, but why not get it straight from the source?!
google avatar

Yelp
First time visiting their new location. Love, love it! So much room and the funky decor is fun! Dog friendly patio with ample seating. At the new place you can rent out a room for private parties or for large groups for wine tasting. We had flights of their new releases. Liked most some not so much, could be different for others. The service was friendly and attentive!

Yelp
We had such a great time tasting wine here. We came for my mama's birthday and it was a treat. This place is a little funky, functional, and fun! You can see a lot of the wine aging happening right when you enter the tasting room. We got to see some really cool Terra Cotta vats ( I can't remember the special name for them) where they ferment the Malvasian wine. There are barrels, fun seating options, and a beautiful bar. They have also opened up a back patio option with shade and some ambiance for the folks who would prefer to be all outside. We decided to sit inside because we had a large table to ourselves, the staff was masked, we watched her clean our table and all the patrons were spaced out. My group ordered all sorts of different things. One person got the bubbles, one a beer, one a tasting flight, and my mom and I split a bottle of the Malvasia. I can only speak to my drink but it was amazing. It was light, with a distinct pineapple finish. It was very light. No hint of butter or oak. It would make a great accompaniment to sangria! We got a little hungry after a while and asked for some snacks. Our lovely bartender brought us out two of the charcuterie packs from Wild Plum events, complete with dried fruit, smoked almonds, carrot sticks, tomato jam, brie and another cheese. While most of the food was pretty tasty, it was REALLY expensive for what you got. Each pack is $12 and came with TWO crackers, cold brie and regular ol' carrots. Had each of the ingredients been special, I would have felt better paying that price. The tomato jam was definitely the star of the show. I can't wait to buy more of the Malvasia but will probably skip the snacks next time.

Yelp
Started with a flight to wet our whistle. Not a rose fan but they gladly traded it out. Loved the Cab and Malbec. Friendly and warm. Not much sitting and no food but wine was great.

Yelp
Excellent stop on our summer trip! So excellent, I ended up joining the wine club! I love everything about this winery! From the staff, to the wine, everything is completely outstanding! I definitely wish I lived near the area so I can visit more often. I look forward to the wine club shipments!

Yelp
Started off our winery day with this winery and they had this unique wine that was orange and it was pretty good. They also had cannolis there the day that we visited.
google avatar

Yelp
A plus for this tasting room/winery is that they are open on Mondays! Jenny, the server, was friendly and helpful. I liked the decor of the place. I also appreciated Jenny letting us taste additional items like vermouth which prompted me to purchase two bottles to take back to San Francisco. One thing that I was surprised to find out they don't sell wineskins so you can pack a bottle or two in your suitcase to bring home. Not enough of demerit to take away a star, but it's something to do for visitors.
google avatar

Yelp
If you want to try unusual wines stop here for sure. Some wines are fermented in terracotta and concrete. Nice tasting room. On the younger wild side.

Yelp
S till doing wine tasting during COVID-19 Great service in regards to COVID. Tried four very different wines during the wine tasting. Two white two red. One bubbly. I'm sure they change the selection around so don't reference this. All of the wines I actually liked. One of the white wines (not bubbly) was a little too acidic for me but I have a low tolerance. I won't go too into detail about the wine because the wonderful human host who tells you about each wine and the menu will fill you in. The menu is very articulate and funny is the descriptions for each wine they offer. The establishment is very clean and spunky. We ended up buying a bottle of The Bearded Quixote which is mellow and dry. A true mind/body of its own. Catchy atmosphere, wonderful customer service, hope to return soon!

Yelp
A cute winery and tasting room located just off the main street. We came here to kill some time as the cidery down the street was not yet open. It ended up being a great find! The inside has oodles of atmosphere and is very funky and youthful. They have a fairly large range of wines, many of which use grapes sourced in Washington state. It was good to do the tasting as we were unfamiliar with a lot of the appellations they used, which were surprisingly east drinking. They also offer rose in cans, which is a brilliant idea for anyone picnicking or hiking, as we were.

Yelp
We just hosted the most magnificent holiday party our company has ever experience, all due to large part to Split Rail Winery's new location on Chinden Blvd. next to the old Stagecoach Inn. We were greeted immediately by the Event Director Casey, along with her two exceptional staffers. The place sparkled chic modern Christmas vibes and ambiance. Casey was incredible to work with during the planning and the evening of the event. We could have easily had 100 more people there, and our 50 guests were super comfortable with quiet seating areas everyone, or big tables in the middle of the party happenings. We used a big glass room with an 8 foot table for our grazing table, and the barrel room made for a spacious a fun gift exchange area where all could participate. The wine.... I have to make mention of the wine, it's over the top fabulous. I tried every blend. If you want to show off the best the area has to offer with a trending, modern edge, this place is for you. We will book again! Marty Siebertz & Joe Devlin, Atova Real Estate

Yelp
Great, knowledgeable, small, kind, staff. Everything is done right here! There are many classic and unorthodox wine made here. Great place to hang out and taste some wine. Bring some food from somewhere and hang out! I tried to contact other wineries in the area via Facebook and they were not nearly as nice and the folks here! We had some wine shipped home. Thank you Split Rail!

Yelp
Small wine tasting room for three up-n-coming wineries here in Garden City. Syringa, Spilt Rail and Strange Folks all sharing space. Strange folks canned wine is so fun and genius for ease of use. Love how everything is right here together. It's easy to do an urban wine tour here in Garden City now. Some great stuff!!

Yelp
The Split Rail tasting room is a great space to enjoy some amazing varieties of fantastic local wine. Their new building has a womderful outdoor area for the nice days and a grest interior for the cold and stormy days. The staff is very knowledgeable, as expected, but the thing that sets Split Rail apart is their unique varietals. I highly recommend the "White Noise" sparkling white... it is nothing short of delicious.

Yelp
Small little winery. It has a little bit of a warehouse feel but the wine is great. They only do one kind of tasting that you are tied down to. The server though was super nice and was not your normal winery server. She was super down to earth and spoke in a language that us non wine experts can understand.

Madison J.

Yelp
Ooooof. This experience was rough. Went tasting on Saturday when they opened (there was 2 people in there when our party of 6 arrived). We did the taster for $20/person. The service was atrocious. Sat waiting for second tasting for 20 minutes, where I had to ask them if we were responsible for telling if we were finished (I have no idea how this kind of tasting works) and the girl working there gave me eye roll with attitude. Our server then switched to someone else who was also rude. For example, my grandma is hard of hearing and asked where they sourced the grapes from. The waiter replied with the most condescending "Like I said before." I looked at my sister with wide eyes surprised by the amount of attitude towards an 83 year old grandma. I've been in the restaurant industry for many years and have had my bad days, but I wouldn't treat customers like they did us. I would not recommend going here.

Yelp
I LOVE Split Rail. It's my favorite winery in Idaho. Mostly because the wine is fantastic but partly because it's unlike any other winery I've ever been to - it's funky and whimsical. You'll know what I mean when you visit. Don't forget to read the wine descriptions on the bottles! Cracks me up. Split Rail's red wine selection is just so darn good. That said though, I've actually liked most of their whites, too (and I normally pass on white wine all together). Support local and head to Split Rail!
google avatar

Becky B.

Yelp
Love this Idaho Winery! I'm my humble opinion it's the best in the State of Idaho if not the NW. I appreciate the wines as they are spot on the descriptions, The Horned Beasts are my fav. The warehouse tasting room is great. We can't wait to see the new tasting room coming soon. We always feel welcome, and love Jed and Casey!
google avatar

Yelp
Small local tasting room in Garden City. Situated in a warehouse. Upon entering you leave the grime, and bustle of Chinden Ave behind. We were greeted immediately, and went over our tasting options. we decided on tasting the rose, and several reds. We were surprised at how good some of these wines were. The dry Rose was very well balanced, and had a great finish (bought a couple of bottles). We also purchased some Cab, and Tempranillo. We will return from time to time, and taste other wines (mourvedre for one). If you like, or are interested in wine. This is a great place to stop.
google avatar

Miquel N.

Yelp
Amazing wine. Tasting was a bit different because of covid. But we are going to enjoy our two new bottles
google avatar

Mindy L.

Yelp
I have been here three times now and have not been disappointed one time. This is a quirky little urban winery that provides fun and interesting bottle art with tasty wines. We have done tastings 2 of the 3 times visiting there and have found new and fun things each time to try. My favorite right now is their Dry Syrah Rose, it is perfect for the summertime and is affordable to have on deck anytime a party might arise. My husband enjoyed the Laser Fox and the Swamp Donkey red. This is a place we will continue to go to and our out of town visitors alway request to go here as part of the agenda when visiting Boise. So we look forward to more wine experiences and fun at Split Rail Winery in the future.

Yelp
I knew that Idaho wines had arrived after my very first sip at Split Rail. My mother and I each did a tasting, (it should be noted that we have very divergent tastes in wine) and both of us liked every single wine we were poured. No longer is Idaho the backwoods step cousin of Washington and California-Split Rail's wines are mature, carefully made, and extremely palatable. The wine descriptions are hilarious instead of stuffy, and the winemaker himself poured our tasting. The wine and staff are everything that makes Idaho great-kind, knowledgeable, irreverent, and amazing. Wine club, here I come. (Why only four stars? Curb appeal! Great wines, functional tasting room-bring on a patio!)

Amy L.

Yelp
Went in at 5:20 were ignored, they close at 6 so left without even a tasting. Elabirated on the Google review. Very disappointing
google avatar

Beverly H.

Yelp
My favorite Idaho Winery. The location is very citified, so no beautiful landscaping to retreat to. No memorabilia either. The wine and personnel makes up for that.
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Enjoyed their tasting: nice wines and a couple of beers from Bella. The wifey did the wines and me the beers. She enjoyed the Chardonnay best and for me it was the pilsner. Sandwich shop next door makes this a great stop !!
google avatar

Calvin A.

Yelp
Split Rail is great. I walked in Saturday and Claire walked me through a lovely tasting of great wines. The atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. Solid reds and whites. I will be back often!
google avatar

Kim B.

Yelp
This was my 5th stop on my Idaho wine tour, and my favorite! My experience epitomizes the truth that conversation elevates the wine as Melissa was delightful and engaging. The wine descriptions are worth the stop. Oh, and the wines are delicious. Ambiance plus interesting servers plus great wine equals a memorable afternoon.
google avatar

Katy C.

Yelp
Awesome urban winery! Wines are super delicious and the staff was great. I'm a huge fan of tempranillos and theirs was amazing! Would recommend.
google avatar

Chryssa R.

Yelp
Six of us stopped by here as part of a wine tour and the woman refused to do a tasting for us because we were with a wine tour. That makes no sense, especially because she still came to our table and did a whole sales pitch about why their wines are so great. After checking out the menu, I wasn't allowed to order my first choice because I'm not a "member" and couldn't order my second choice because they didn't have any. I settled for a glass of Verdot which was good, but overall I was expecting a better experience.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Idaho is just coming into wine and getting the word around how nice they are. The tasting here was fun and while they offer a tasting they do not offer a tasting of their bubbly thus the reason for a four. If you are going to produce a product that is new to the market place tasting it is a must. Bought one bottle of Verdot. The wines were young tasting so fun and good for food or just sipping. While the wines were good I think it will take some more time before Just the perfect blend will be ready. Darn really wished I knew what that bubbly was like.
google avatar

Josh J.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing! Great wine, great ambiance, and so chill!!! Also the staff is amazing, and not pretentious like at other wineries in the area! They are absolute joy to be around and they make it so much fun! I highly recommend everyone check them out and enjoy!
google avatar

Kristi R.

Yelp
Good wines in a fun and spacious tasting room. The hostess, Casey was knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. We bought a bottle of the 2014 Laser Fox Cinsault which we enjoyed the next day. Definitely a winery worth stopping by.
google avatar

Kristine G.

Yelp
I don't know if something was off but all the wines we tasted were highly acidic. It seemed the tasting room was more focused on being "hip" than focused on service. Sorry.

D A.

Yelp
I'll make this short and to the point. 0/6 people in our party with varying tastes did not like the wines here. Find somewhere else...many other options for better wine around here!
google avatar

Nikki S.

Yelp
Split Rail is such a great addition to the community! Amazing wine and phenomenal people...their tasting room has a great urban feel and lots of friendly faces!

Kristen K.

Yelp
Came here and tasted the wine. Went to order a glass of wine that was offered on the menu and the waitress wouldn't open a bottle for one glass of wine even though it was advertised by the glass on the menu. I'm pretty sure that's false advertisement. We also sat after we finished our tasting for 25 minutes before she came back over. This would be understandable if it was busy but there were only 2 tastings going on. We were going to buy a few bottles but instead left without even buying a glass. It was so rude we will not be returning.

Amanda C.

Yelp
Split Rail is in a really cool space. I loved the vibe and the wine. The staff was really helpful and fun to banter with. Can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
I am editing this review for the following reason: When I posted the original Review I noticed a free tasting for Split Rail. It sent the coupon to my phone. I went back to the winery with a friend the next day so we could use the coupon and she could taste their wines. The person who met us was a blonde woman - very, very rude. I mentioned the Yelp coupon. She said yeah well we don't use those. When I asked then why is it on Yelp she replied she doesn't own Yelp and can't control what they do. The coupon was for Wednesdays. I said ok, that was misleading on Yelp for the free tasting. The woman said it's my fault because I didn't open and read the coupon before coming. Yes, I should have opened the coupon and you know a few bucks for wine tasting is not the issue. Her attitude was; I said we'll skip the tasting - she said "Good. Leave!" So with that experience, which could have been handled customer service. A simple I'm sorry that's a weekday coupon would have been so much easier. The person who worked the day before was very nice, helpful. The person who worked on 14 July was malicious and confrontational for no reason. There's a really cool winery behind Split Rail which has a great atmosphere and the staff is friendly, informative and helpful. Spend your money there!
google avatar

D H.

Yelp
When I go wine tasting, Split Rail is where I start. They have a great variety of amazing wines from their innovative canned wine to their newest Daft Pink Rosé and their solid Horned Beast GSM. The staff is very knowledgable and friendly and the venue its self is inviting and comfortable. I highly recommend Split Rail Winery.
google avatar

Matt B.

Yelp
This is my favorite winery in town because the wines are tremendous and the service is quick and friendly. When I was there the tasting room was packed and I was still treated great. I rode my bike in on the greenbelt then through Garden City - an easier ride than I thought it would be. I highly recommend this place, especially if you've got out-of-towners you want to entertain!
