Knowledgeable, incredibly nice, and always responsive — the kind of team members you actually look forward to dealing with. Every interaction feels effortless and genuine. I’ve shopped at multiple Sports Basement locations over the years — even bought skis and boots at two others — and every time, the experience has been unforgettable. This location continues that same tradition of excellence from the front of the store all the way to the back. Huge shoutout as well to [Adam], a newer team member in the bike center who already operates like a seasoned pro. Equally knowledgeable, patient, and great to work with. Sports Basement nails the whole package: • Competitive pricing (even against online retailers) • A clean, organized store • A super local, community-oriented vibe • Staff who actually care and know what they’re talking about I highly recommend them. Update: After posting this review, the General Manager reached out directly, acknowledged the issues, and made a meaningful effort to make things right. I genuinely appreciate the follow-up and willingness to take accountability. While our initial experience wasn’t great, their response shows they care about improving. My partner and I came in last Friday to buy new skis, boots, and bindings, and unfortunately the overall experience was pretty sub-par. The tech helping us, Stephen, felt really disengaged and came across as condescending while fitting my partner for her ski boots. It honestly felt like he couldn’t care less about the process. After we picked out everything — two pairs of skis, boots, and bindings — we were told at checkout to carry it all back to the service department to get the skis mounted. The first service tech who approached us seemed irritated that he had to help and was noticeably unfriendly when telling us to check in. Thankfully, the next tech who handled the scheduling was actually very kind and helpful, and let us know our skis should be ready by Sunday/Monday. By Monday afternoon, we hadn’t heard anything, so I called for an update. It took about 10 minutes for someone to even answer. When they did, they left the phone sitting on the desk while helping another customer — I could hear the entire conversation — and no one acknowledged me or asked me to hold. After waiting several minutes, I hung up and called back. The associate who answered, Marianna, was unfriendly and told me they couldn’t provide an update and to call back at 5pm if we didn’t hear anything. We ultimately went through with the purchase because everything was 30% off, but we still spent over $2,500, which made the lack of care and professionalism even more disappointing. Overall, this visit left a bad impression, and unfortunately it’s not somewhere we plan to return.

After 15 years of inactivity I bought a new bike at Sports Basement Presidio in January and have been taking baby steps to get back into biking condition. The new bike has many features new to me so I went back to SB to learn more about my bike. Thad stopped his work and spent 30+ minutes with me to show me the features of the bicycle, how it operates, setting up apps connected to the bike and advised on components that would help me. He instilled me with confidence and I am very grateful for his help. I did a 40 mile ride the next day, my longest on the new bicycle so far!

I came in with my boyfriend who needed help fixing his snowboard boots, and we got helped by the most lovely employee Eden who works in the ski/snowboard section. She helped him mold the boots and he’s been pain free since. She was so kind, patient, and knowledgeable, and went above and beyond to give him a wonderful experience. Definitely recommend asking for her help if you come in!

I've lived in San Francisco for two years now and have gone to Thad countless times for all kinds of bike repairs and questions. From a serious crash that left my carbon frame broken to a Facebook Marketplace bike purchase that went very wrong, Thad has been there for me every single step of the way — always calm, thoughtful, and incredibly thorough. His patience is unmatched, his attention to detail is exceptional, and he works efficiently without ever making you feel rushed. What really sets Thad apart, though, is how much he genuinely cares. He takes the time to explain everything, offers honest advice, and always looks for the best solution — not the most expensive one. It’s rare to find someone who combines this level of technical expertise with such integrity and kindness. Thad is generous with his time, deeply knowledgeable, humble, and truly one of those people who makes a stressful situation feel manageable. Every interaction with him leaves me feeling supported and confident in my bike again. If I could give 10 stars, I absolutely would. San Francisco is lucky to have him.

I went to this store after having a horrible experience at the Bryant store. Reed was amazing, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything (I’m a first time skier). He fitted my boots with expertise and explained everything. He then went over all of the options for skis, asking me tons of questions to determine the best fit for me. I learned a ton and bought all of my equipment, including clothing, with co finance that I am prepared with the equipment that I need to give me the best chances of success. Reed is awesome!!

Came in for a ski boot fit and Kass was patient, professional, and informative. This store is full of amazing hardgoods and softgoods with an incredible assortment and great selection. Please give Kass props, I will be a customer for life!

I came here to drop off some old shoes. They take old shoes whether you want to donate them or recycle them. I had 2 pairs that are pretty much done for and it's hard to find a place in the bay where they decide for you whether the shoes should be donated or recycled (I think mine should be the latter), that also takes all shoes, not just athletic ones. The bins are at the exit, but if you're lost, the staff is awesome. One of them, a lady, answered all my annoying questions with a great attitude. They also take: socks (might only be wool but the website does not specify), real cork, sports bottles, gas canisters, batteries, cardboard (different part of store). Slight disagreement between website and bins (check photos and website) but you can try to ask. It's a bit out of the way but I rode the bus here so my shoes don't go into landfill (I had time). Not to mention this place is huge if you want to shop, and they have different equipment for rent, drinking fountain, and clean bathrooms.

I've been to Sports Basement in the Presidio many times since it's the headquarters meeting place for the SF Marathon trainings. I bought a pair of Keen shoes here before too. It's very generous of them to provide a space for our meetups and 11% off store purchases (20% if you're a Basementeer). Today I also came for the Waste Not Fest that have free coffee, mini muffins, mini quiche, mini scones, and even a popcorn machine for refreshments. I came at 1pm today and waited almost an hour, but the Patagonia worn wear tech said they're at capacity for the sewing machines. Even though the event is from 11am-4pm, I wasn't able to get my jacket mended. She gave me black stickers instead to fix the hole.

I had the weirdest experience here, and I feel the need to tell this story because it was definitely a WTF moment. I'm in the market for new snowboard boots because the ones I have are the very first boots I ever owned, and I've been overdue for an upgrade for a while. Since I haven't shopped for boots in years and I have advanced in my skills, I wanted to come into the store to get my feet sized properly and try boots on in-store. As I browsed the selection, an employee quickly came out to greet me. I tell him what I'm there for, and he tells me he can absolutely help me. Perfect! I point out a few boots I'm interested in trying on, and then we sit to size my feet. I let him know my feet are actually 2 different sizes: Women's 7 & 7.5. My current boots are a 7.5, but I'm thinking of sizing up to an 8 so my right foot has a little more room. He measures my feet and tells me that I am, indeed, correct that my feet are 2 different sizes, but that I am actually a size 5-5.5! Wait, what? But before I can say anything, he disappears to grab boots from the stock room. He comes out with 2 boxes: a size 5 and a size 5.5. Since I'm a newbie at buying snowboard boots, I thought maybe the style I wanted came in unisex sizes? So I didn't protest. I STRUGGLED to get my foot into the boot. It felt like I was going to break my ankle getting it in. He told me that new boots are very stiff and that it was a common problem. I tried and tried, standing up and putting my whole weight onto it. No go. I was breaking a sweat! I tried the 5.5....same problem. He says...let me go grab a 6! He does, and I was able to get my foot in, but my toes were so smashed. I finally ask him...Excuse me, I'm a size 7 IN WOMEN'S SIZES. Are these WOMEN'S SIZES?? For some reason, he still didn't register that he was thinking in men's sizes. I insisted that he grab me a size 8. He actually sounded hesitant! But he relented and grabbed an 8. And what do you know, my feet fit! And without having to jam my foot in with potential for injury! But by this point, I was tired and didn't trust him anymore, so I left without trying on other styles or sizes. What a waste of a visit. So in conclusion, I spent 20+ minutes trying on boots that were obviously too small for my feet and getting gaslit by a man to make me think I was a different size than what I literally wear on a day-to-day basis. And here's the fun part: I went to a different location where the employees were CLEARLY knowledgeable. They explained to me that Snowboard boots are NOT unisex. There are men's boots in men's sizes and women's boots in women's sizes. He pointed out the ONE unisex boot that exists in the store - uncommon, he said, and designed for more advanced riders - and priced at a whopping $650+. So Sports Basement Presidio: please train your employees better on literally the basics of men's vs women's sizes. Oh, and parking ain't free here, so I literally paid money to be told that I don't know my own foot size. Cool.

This location is one of my go-to spots for anything sports or outdoors related. Clean environment and friendly staff inside. The store is also very spacious inside and they have a solid selection. I love catching their sales, especially as a Basementer. I definitely got my membership value back from the discounts alone, so it's worth it. The parking lot looks much nicer now after the construction, but expect to pay for parking there if you decide to drive. They charge for parking everyday, including Sundays. I also wished they had a fishing section, but I know that's not something the chain carries. Still, this location is clean, stocked, well-organized, and filled with friendly staff.

If you like any sports - or you need basic equipment to be more active and fit - Sports Basement is for you. Only friendly faces here, no intimidation or pressure, it feels like the laid back brother of Trader Joe's. We've been here monthly to pick up a rental wetsuit for open water swimming. Generously, they allow one day before and after the rental period to pick up and drop off the suit: "Kick back, no need to rush!" Waited for my adventurous swimmer and got a hearty "How are you, you need help?" easy-smile greeting. Sports Basement is the place for fair pricing, gear for every sport under heaven - and fantastic service. Lots of parking in the private lot with million dollar views of the Bridge and waterfront. Heartily recommend.

Fully Stocked - big beautiful Store. Gear for walking, hats, shoes, camping, snow, rain, paddling, biking, snacks. And a pot of coffee ready to enjoy! . They are overlooking the bay and Presidio open space and hiking, biking. The Presidio is a Huge open space area (a former military base with lots of history). They rent bikes for 3 hours / or a day. How cool! Great for tourists, or locals that don't have a bike. They offer some great activities and events. Become a member- you get a discount on purchases and your $$ go to help local organizations. Parking for the store and a bigger pay lot for visitors is in front of the store. Hint: Local Muni bus goes right past the store.

My friend and I rented bikes here to bike the Golden Gate Bridge. You have to be a little patient if there's a line but generally staff is very helpful and give you advice on bikes and tips on where to bike. I appreciated too that after biking there was take out food that included to-go choices from local restaurants like Burma Superstar! Great store to browse for outdoor gear too.

I went in for my bike. The brakes weren't working. Bob at the Bike shop helped me tighten the brakes. They have a great bike shop and they are really helpful. Thank you!

I went many years without realizing Sports Basement was actually HQ'd and based in SF. I was trying to find a place to get particular running shoes, without ordering online. Sports Basement came up as an option, with multiple colors to choose from. Great! Their OG location in the Presidio had them in stock so I ordered online and had it arranged for local pickup, as it claimed 'same day' availability. More on that later. What I did learn during checkout was that you can sign up to become a basementeer for a one-time $25 fee, that gives you 10% off AND contributes 10% to a charity of your choosing (from a long list.) A fantastic value and will absolutely make me return for future needs. So that same day availability--well, it didn't actually happen. I even went to the store in-person, hoping they might be able to check on it or perhaps expedite whatever process they have to pull it. The cashier, while friendly, basically told me what I already knew: I hadn't received the 'ready' e-mail. I did finally get that e-mail the next day, but not quite as convenient as I thought it'd be when I ordered online. Still, I made the right choice and will come back when I need my next pair, etc.

I just stumbled upon Snow Fest at sports basement. Signing up for the event at the door took less than five minutes and gave me extra discounts. The store is very crowded and the vibe is hoppin'! Despite the fact that lots of people are taking advantage of the great prices, they had so many checkout registers open. I only waited about 5 minutes. If you're thinking of visiting today, stop thinking and get over here.

I would give this place 10 stars if I could! My husband and I were out on a bike ride and my front disc break started acting up. The closest bike shop was this place and in 30 minutes they had me back up and running for only a $25 fee! Super friendly and amazing that on a busy Saturday they could take care of the issue with only a short wait! Highly recommend for any bike mechanic service!

My daughter and I went to look for her first pair of ski boots. Reid was the ski technician and was excellent. He was patient, knowledgeable, and thorough in the process. Although my daughter was not ready to purchase her boots (she was a bit indecisive since she was paying for half), we both learned a lot and will decide which boots she wants and we will return. Reid was hard working and enjoyable.

The warm welcome, the amazing deals, the friendly staff, the return policy should one ever decide it's not the right stuff for them, the variety of items, the free tiki bar for coffee, Lacroix beverages, and the newly renovated restrooms! Thank you for being Sports Basement! Me and my son love to spend time here and before we know it, I have purchased stuff that I can use not just for my running but also for day to day living!

I had an online ordering issue that I went in-store to resolve; it took awhile but the four staff members I interacted with were all pleasant and efficient and helped me with it in a timely manner. The kind folks who helped me deserve a shout out: Madison, Reid, Aaron and Grant (thank you)!

Welcoming staff. Matthew helped me pick out some nice ASICS to help with the 10,000+ plus steps I do at work. He was very knowledgeable of all the brands and didn't force one over the other. Rhonda is amazing as well. If you want a place to shop without feeling pressure Run/Walk to see Matthew and Rhonda!

This is so beloved... When I went running in Crissy Field, I would always duck in and lose myself in there looking for ski pants or barefoot sandals I never needed. But I love supporting them, and it is a great to see a community fostered by their team.

Long lines and the checkout staff usually dint very pleasant. But one incident occurring recently was upsetting. I returned a product that they couldn't find a receipt on my account for, my husband live very close and shop at this SB a TON and we both made a few very last mins stops in before our ski trip. Well the product was taken by the store employee as their was no proof of purchase. They said sometimes things don't get scanned in, cool. But I didn't have time to check to see if my husband bought said item, they just took it. And they admitted to being at fault, not scanning, but when I asked if I could maybe have a 10% off discount for next time for the inconvenience of waiting there for 20 mins while they checked and not allow me to check with my husband to see if he purchased I was told no. So I'll be taking my sports needs to REI, Hibbet and Dicks.

Who doesn't love Sports Basement? I get to Walnut Creek, Berkeley and San Ramon most often. This location is where I go mostly for marathon expos. There is always something nifty to try out for the next race. I load up on samples for recovery and future training. Staff is always fabulous. It is worth the lifetime membership.

Went in and told Terry in the bicycle department that I didn't know crap about bikes but wanted one to commute to work. Terry spent a lot of time taking me through all the details of many several different bicycles, often answering questions before I even asked them. Ended up putting a down payment for a new Aventon Soltera with pedal assist, giving me exactly what I need. I've always had pretty decent experiences shopping at Sports Basement but, Terry was better than I expected. It's too bad they don't make commission, but the least I could do is write this review.

My first time at this location was such a positive experience. I really do love Sports Basement. We came here to rent bikes to ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. The gentleman that helped us with the bike rentals was so awesome. He was entertaining, funny, helpful, and knowledgeable. We were all nervous about the difficulty of the ride, but he helped us choose the right bike and answered all of our questions. He made sure all of our bikes and helmet fit perfect. Definitely recommend Sports Basement for all your bike renting needs.

This particular sports basement was very well organized although it's currently under a bit of construction and their bathrooms are closed, I like their mops and every one in the store was very helpful. The parking lot is a bit chaotic, due to the brand new outdoor park area and you have to pay for parking even if you're a customer at sports basement. However, there is an employee standing in the sports basement parking area he tells you/lets you know where a parking spot is available so then you can pay for parking and go directly into the store as opposed to the other patrons using the parking lot for the park.

SB has become our go to place to stop in and grab bike stuff. Unlike feeling like a place that is solely there to sell you stuff. They just have such a massive selection that it's basically a Toys'R'Us for active people. I've stopped in countless times on a long ride and picked up chain lube, an extra tube, gloves, socks, cliff bar blocs, truffle chips, sports gels, scratch, cold brew, and the list goes on! They've helped perform brake services, derailleur repairs, hub tunes and more, so they truly know their bike stuff. I don't snowboard and backpack like I used to, but we love their winter gear selection along with the summer camping items. We recently got the most rad double or two person sleeping bag from them on sale, and me and my wife will never go back to rustling around like two bags of chips during a quiet movie scene while trying to not wake up camp!

Heads up - the parking lot is now an hourly paid lot. Today they had a parking attendant. Two aisles reserved for customers. The remainder area fair game for all going to Tunnel Tops next door. We were in & out of Sports Basement within the 1/2 hour. Took a chance by not paying. Our bad.

I adore Sports Basement and I'm glad to hear that they're even expanding (new Stonestown location - woot woot). Their staff are fantastic and helpful. Their inventory is vast and always changing. Their prices are reasonable. They are continually seeking out new innovative ways to engage their customers through interactive community events. My husband and I both subscribe to their E-mail newsletter and I love learning about their regular sales (their winter ski stuff is on sale and largely discounted at the moment), their regular group runs, bike excursions, and their yoga classes. In addition to their amazing customer service - they also offer free shipping on all orders over $30, as well as curbside pick-up. Support an outstanding local resource and gem like Sports Basement! Trust.

Lived in SF 1/2 my life & just now doing things like this. sports Basement has a lot of bikes you can rent for great prices & staff are extremely helpful. If you're ever in the area, check them out & rent your bike needs form them.

Who the hell charges for parking when you're shopping at a store????!! San Francisco that's where they charge you for absolutely everything. There is construction in the area where Sports Basement is and they are charging for parking when you shop at the store here which is absolutely absurd. Not worth it to go to this location for the parking charge alone.

What a huge store full of selection. I stopped by looking for trail running shoes. One friendly, store employee was available to help me minutes after arriving in the footwear section. Found my new kicks and a great deal on a new sports bra! Fun store!

I feel obliged to follow up on the review I left following a less than satisfying purchase from Sports Basement. As stated in their reply to my initial review, they did reach out to me and offered a very fair solution to the situation. They were also very pleasant in doing so. This is how businesses should handle issues with customers. I will certainly purchase from them again in the future as a now satisfied customer.

I love the Sports Basement. What they lack in comprehensiveness of selection (you can get most things just not EVERYTHING) that make up in community vibe, accessibility, and service. I definitely recommend their bike shop for quick routine maintenance and I'm usually able to find last-minute necessities for family backpacking trips. They have a great member discount, too, and they fill the niche REI left when it transformed to more of a lifestyle store. As a bonus, the Presidio Sports Basement is right next to the new Tunnel Tops playground, making it a favorite destination for the whole family!

Just wanted to give a huge shoutout to the kind man working in the snowboarding goggles section on Saturday night (1/21)! He helped my boyfriend's parents pick out their new pairs of Smiths, but he offered a LOT of help and advice. It is very apparent that he knew what he was selling, and he seemed incredibly passionate about the sport too! Couldn't get his name, but he was awesome! (Just try and find out who exactly it was by asking who helped a couple pick out matching helmets and goggles... hopefully that works!)

They have a great rental service! Lots of options and priced very fairly in my opinion! I will definitely be renting from them again.

I purchased five items shown as in-stock at the Presidio store, for "pickup within 3 hours" (according to the SB web site) on 8/21 at 11am. By 5pm, the order still wasn't ready for pick up. No explanation, not contact, nothing. I emailed Sports Basement customer support, who then said the order would be ready to pick up the next day by 1pm. Not even close to 3 hours, but okay. At 1pm on 8/22, it again still wasn't ready. I emailed customer support again, and was told "our order fulfillment system isn't seamless... hang tight." By 5pm on 8/22, the order still wasn't ready. After waiting over 30 hours for a 3-hour pick up order, I canceled the order. Sports Basement's refund for my order (that they never fulfilled) was $5 less than the amount I had paid them up front. Again no explanation given. EDIT: after posting this review, Sports Basement staff contacted me with offers that were more than satisfactory. The initial level service was still regrettable, but I have updated my rating to account for the above-average response I received afterward.

The team at the bike shop here was great to work with. I rolled in in the middle of the week, midday, and they were able to immediately help me. I had first emailed photos of my broken part and the SB team immediately diagnosed it and told me to bring in the bike. Feels like your neighborhood bike shop because they are! Presidio location parking is super easy and free. And you get to enjoy the beautiful views!

New bathrooms are great and aligns with the products and customer service for stores. More dressing rooms would make this the perfect shopping experience.

I have always been a fan of this Sports Basement. Their products and services are great. BUT.......... the BIKE team REALLY goes all out for their customers. They have earned my admiration and appreciation! The staff, just to name a few - James, Terry, Angel, Tom, Thad and the rest of the team have given me so much help and assistance with parts or accessories for my existing bikes and they have also helped me with purchasing a new bike, especially when the brand new one I got, was stolen! Even when they are busy they try to find the time to help you with a smile. Angel, Tom and Thad have even custom made things for my bikes and have come up with solutions to problems that I could never have thought of! Keep up the good work all, we appreciate it!

A quirky store with endlessly helpful and charming staff. Prices in store were cheaper than the website.

I've been a member for about 5 years. This location is the closest one to my house but my least favorite. Employees seem unhappy and just way too busy to help or provide basic customer service.

Rented my first ski equipments here in Sports Basement. Everyone done fast and quick help and easy return. Definitely would come back and rent the snowboard equipment to test which one I like the best then I actually buy the equipments for myself.

This is my favorite Sports Basement location. You can't ask for a better view than the Golden Gate Bridge just behind the store. Their commitment to supporting local charities and efforts is why I always shop here. Their prices are already lower than most competitors and then you throw in the 10% Sports Basement insider discount and you've got a really deal! They have a huge selection of running shoes, clothing, bicycles, and energy bars. The employees are knowledgable, friendly, and eager to assist you. The lines at the restrooms can be quite long if there is an event at the store or nearby. They have a huge parking lot where folks hanging out at Crissy Field can park at.

Disappointed with the low stock of products here. Wanted some exercise equipment (dumbbells, medicine balls, etc.) but they didn't have ANYTHING!!! The sales associate said they didn't know when they would have any new shipments.

Love this store but after the remodeled Crissy Fiekd opened, they started charging for parking because people visiting the CF would park there and are not shopping at the store. The entire city is turning into anti cars and people are disrespectful of SB's parking lot and ruin it for the shopppers. I stay away from the Crissy Fiekd location now and shop at their Stonestown (poorer selection tho) or 16th street (homeless all over) stores instead. It's a trade off.

These guys have a huge selection of everything You could possibly want You could possibly want For an outdoor lifestyle. Lots of awesome clothes Camping equipment Biking skis you name it. The staff is also very friendly highly recommend this place.
