On the Grid : Sportmen's Lodge

"Walking into the newly renovated Sportmen's Lodge, one would have no idea this gem first opened its doors in the 1880's. With its earliest visitors pursuing a fishing trip, it grew to housing the greats of Hollywood's golden age including Clark Gable, Bette Davis, and Lauren Bacall. Today, Sportmen's Lodge is still a staple of Studio City, with a large events center, the River Rock, and largest pool in the valley. Whether you're staying a few nights or enjoying a day trip, this place has you covered." - Blake Kathryn

The Valley’s Iconic Sportsmen’s Lodge Damaged in Kitchen Fire - Eater LA

"An early morning electrical fire in a kitchen of the Sportsmen’s Lodge has caused considerable damage to portions of the landmark property. A team of 57 firefighters began extinguishing the blaze just after 2 a.m., and a partial knock down was declared at 4:06 a.m. Some of the historic property’s walls had to be taken down in order to extinguish the fire as it traveled through the ventilation system and into hard-to-reach areas between floors. No one was injured in the fire, which started in the events center area, and the exact cause remains under investigation. The Sportsmen’s Lodge, an iconic Valley destination that combos as a cluster of restaurant spaces, events destination, and hotel, has been in use since the 1880s, though many new structures have been built and modified over the years. Despite the damage done, the Sportsmen’s Lodge website says the events center portion of the property should be back up and running shortly." - Cathy Chaplin

My first trip to Los Angeles was in 2003, and we stayed at the Sportsmans Lodge. I loved every minute. Perfectly situated for anything you could want. The long gone Twains restaurant was our first meal in The Valley, on the night we got there. Since then, my son and i stayed at the Sportsmans 4 more times, and met several well known actors who were also staying there. Unfortunately, after it as refurbished in 2014(?) it became too expensive to stay at, but we did visit it on our 2016 holiday to LA, albeit just once. I'll miss it very much 😥 Dominic ( Huddersfield,England)

We had a wonderful time here. Very clean and awesome atmosphere. We stayed here while we visited Disneyland. Pool was perfect and all the staff was so polite and extremely nice to our kids. We'll be going there again!

The staff is really nice and friendly. Our room is pretty good. The bathroom is beautiful, but it is ruined a little by the paint chipping in the shower and weird, questionable vent directly above your head while showering. I can't tell if there is just rust/ crud built up in there, or if there is mold. The room is spacious, clean, and trendy. If there was a mini-fridge, it would have made it perfect to stay here. The biggest thing for me is that the website said free parking, but I was charged $18 per night. Not too happy about that. Otherwise, it was a nice place to stay. I did like the free shuttle to Universal Studios, even though the last pickup was 8 pm, but the park didn't close until 10 pm.

The outside of the hotel looks a bit dated but don't be fooled. As soon as you walk in everything has been renovated. The staff is friendly and provided us with great service. There is a bar available right next to the pool so you can have a cocktail outside while lounging. The rooms are very minimalistic with a lot of open space and not a whole lot of furniture but everything was very clean and comfortable. I'll definitely come back when I'm in the area

I was here to celebrate a 50 year reunion of the casts of Disney on Parade, a series of arena shows. The rooms were large and clean and relatively well appointed with a relaxed, somewhat modern vibe. The food and service in the cafe was wonderful, though I only had breakfast. I enjoyed my stay and the reunion tented venue was spectacular. The helpful, friendly staff made this very special event as good as it gets! Just a perfect time was had by all and we were all very grateful for the experience. The one downside would be that the hotel has been around a long time and few elements should be updated, particularly the enamel coating in my room's bathtub (324). It was scratched or chipped under the faucet area, and though very clean, it gave the look of something less than clean. In the rooms, though clean and comfortable, there was a vibe of a hotel needing just a little love to bring it back to its glory days. There was also construction going on. Lastly, it is difficult to see the car entrance to the hotel. It is easy to drive past it a few times before seeing the right driveway. Perhaps this is the result of the construction work being done. Though an older property, overall a top ten experience.

Great hotel for universal studios. Checked in no problem, room was perfect! Shower could do with some improvement maybe a cubicle installed instead of a bath + shower curtain. But overall excellent. Balcony was a view of the rear car park, but didn't bother us as we didn't spend much time in the room. Pool view rooms were available, however they may be loud at night, as each time we came in relatively late there were still people swimming and drinking by the pool. Hotel reception staff were very pleasant and more than happy to help! WiFi again very good. Didn't eat in the hotel so can't comment. Would definitely recommend the hotel, especially for universal studios. The area of studio city is great, some good food around the area.

Stayed in room 212. Room was very nice, but the toilet kept talking back after flushing and didn't always remove toilet paper. Overall the hotel is a tad dated with threadbare carpets in the halls, but very soft and comfortable carpeting in room. Room service was quick and extremely tasty, but also paid what one would expect. Front desk was quick, efficient, and friendly. Pool was heated and looked inviting, but forgot my trunks The bed was AMAZING! The blanket was weighted and confirmed to your body. Pillows were soft and made sleeping easy. Looking forward to staying again later this year for a weekend visit.

Take this review with a grain of salt (especially if you're young/don't have kids). The staff was as accommodating as they could be considering the condition of the hotel. They had the staff bring us up a mini fridge (by hand) when we requested one and they switched our room to a less smelly one when we requested it. It's an old place and although they have upgraded fixtures, the place is in serious need of some power washing. The smell of decades of cigarette smoking takes its toll on the hallways. The smell doesn't necessarily go away when you're in your room. The crystal clear pool can be seen from just about all the inward facing rooms and the decor of the lobby area is very nice. I feel like this place is definitely more geared towards singles/young couples ready to experience the way Hollywood used to glam. If this is your cup, this is a great place for it. If you have a family, there are better options.
